My Word(s) of the Year

Have you chosen your 'Word of the Year'? Choosing one word to focus on all year long, helps inspire you and create intention in your life. So they say, anyway. :)

I thought and thought about what word would really suit me for this year and stage in my life. I kept coming back to one simple word: CAN

CAN?! I know it sounds quite odd when it's by itself. LOL Not the tin can that your food comes in.

CAN: be able to: to have the ability, knowledge, or opportunity to do something

a : know how to

b : be physically or mentally able to

c : used to indicate possibility

d : be permitted by conscience or feeling to

e : be made possible or probable by circumstances to

f : be inherently able or designed to

g : be logically

You see, I use "CAN'T" in my vocabulary a lot. It's my immediate go to word when something is hard...in life, simple little tasks, work and relationships. And if I'm not saying it out loud, then I'm definitely thinking it my head. Sorry to be negative Nelly, but I really do look at the negative before the positive. It drives my hubby crazy. I'm a huge worry wart!! But it's never too late to change!

So as 2014 was approaching I was thinking about my little word, CAN, and the possible dreams and goals I have for the year. And the amazing thing, when I thought about my sweet little word, things seemed to clear up that were foggy and my attitude changed. Even doing simple tasks around the house that I went immediately to my husband for help, I put my big girl pants on and figured it out myself! I felt great! Even if it was simple as opening a jar by myself. LOL

My Main Focus this year:

I CAN be the best mom I CAN be for my boys. Be more involved. Be more present.

I CAN be the best girlfriend to my hubby. Even when times get tough, we are in this together. I CAN have more date nights with hubby even if they are at home. :)

I CAN be more organized and clean. Just a few minutes a day makes a huge difference!

I CAN take time for myself each day. Even if I only have time to work out for 10 minutes.

I CAN be positive. And Say goodbye to Nelly!!!! ;)

I CAN dream. I CAN make plans... it might be a little scary but I CAN do it!

Making handmade items has always been a passion of mine. There is such a wonderful feeling I get sharing my art and creations with others. I can't wait to see where my business takes me this year! It has been quite a fun ride last year and 2014 is going to be even better!

I CAN! I CAN! I CAN! I'm throwing my can'ts in the trash!

Here's to a wonderful 2014!

DIY File Cabinet

Happy New Year! Yes, that's right...there is nothing wrong with your computer! I'm back! If you have been nice (or should I say patient?) enough to keep up, I've been active over at Facebook and Instagram. Come on by and follow me if you are new! With a much longer break than I intended, I found the new year was a great time to start up on the blog again!

So I'm starting off with a bang with my first DIY project of the year! This is an easy DIY project with a big impact. Don't you love those kind?!

I have a small craft room...like the size of a walk in closet. So I need to make the most of my space! My craft room also doubles as an office space so I need room for papers, my boys' art and files. I found this file cabinet on craigslist for $30! I never have good luck on craigslist, most items are overpriced or already sold. So in the middle of all the $100-$200 file cabinet listings, I found this bargain! The guy who sold it to me was very helpful loading it in my van and probably rolling his eyes after I left, knowing I was going to make it "pretty" for my room.

My hubby was sick so I had my 10 year old help me lug it out of our van. I was not going to wait for a few days and wait on hubby. I was a girl on a DIY mission!

I finally got it on a drop cloth in the garage and gave it a good cleaning with soap and water. It wasn't too dirty, but just gave it a nice scrub to make the surface ready for paint. I removed the drawers before I painted. I chose Rustoleum in Lagoon with a Satin finish. I did not sand the piece before I painted, but if you have areas that are rusty or pealing paint, you need to sand to make sure the new paint sticks. My cabinet was in pretty good shape. I sprayed several coats of paint allowing to dry in between each time. I only ended up using 1 can, I cheated and didn't spray the back. No one is going to see it. But I would recommend buying 2 cans just in case.

I decided to make the drawers pop! So I added contact paper that I bought from Target for $5+. You could also get contact paper at the Dollar Store for much less!

First you need to remove the hardware for the drawers. It makes it much easier to apply the contact paper! So this extra step is worth it!

My file cabinet might be a little different from yours but probably with the same concept of removing hardware.

I did a lot of jiggling around to figure out how to remove everything. I even got impatient and googled "how to remove hardware from a file cabinet" and couldn't find anything... LOL So I went back and did some investigating and finally figured it out. The little knob I turned counterclock wise and was able to pull it out.

This is the view from the back of the drawer. See only one nut? I was confused at first since there is more than one piece of hardware on the front.

So with my hubby's socket driver I removed the screw.

I was able to remove the back side of the drawer to reveal access to the rest of the hardware.

I removed the other screw from the handle. And then I able to bend the tabs off the label holder with the tip of a wire cutters.

I then pryed the label holder off gently with a screwdriver.

I washed up the hardware in the sink with soap and water. There was a lot of grime and dust on them. After they dried it was time for paint. I could of left them as is but I love dark hardware. For the paint, I used what I had on hand: Rustoleum Textured in black. I love this paint for anything hardware. I have used it for knobs and door handles in our old house and it holds up very well! I recommend using a metal spray primer beforehand.

I sprayed several thin coats to give maximum coverage.

Now it's time to add the contact paper. I cut the paper the size of the front of the drawer with a little over hang on all 4 sides. Follow the directions on the back side of the paper on how to apply. The drawers are not a big space so it was easy to directly apply it on the drawer and then work out the air bubbles with a flat piece of plastic. I used a dish scraper. :) I then wrapped the overhang on the sides. Kind of like wrapping a present. I did this because I didn't want to see the paper edge and wanted a nice clean look.

I then put on the hardware after they dried. All done! Super easy!

The hardest part out of the whole thing is moving it. :) Thankfully hubby was feeling a little better in the evening and he helped me move it to the basement. Moving it without the drawers is much easier.

Fits and looks great in the space. BTW, I'll be sharing more of my craft room as I finish it up!

Now let's see the before and after again! Not too shabby with a little paint and contact paper. :)

Now I'm ready to organize this space a little bit better! Who wants to come over and do that for me?! Overwhelmed with papers....Aaaahhh

Summer Decor

School is out and summer is here! This is one of my favorite times of the year! I love having my boys home with me all day.

I added a few accent pieces to my everyday decor to summerize our home. I love how everything came together.

I moved my gameboard to the living area and just love the pop of color it brings along our neutral stone wall. I made the gameboard all by hand, no stencils. It took a lot of patients, time and love making it. But it was well worth it. :)

I love my Americana bowl. It's big and heavy!

I just love filling my home with old treasures. The molding is from one of my favorite local stores, Simply Bungalow. I got a box of blue mason jars for $5. So I have them scattered throughout the house.

More old and handmade treasures.

The first and only time I saw the ocean was about 10 years ago at Monterey Bay, CA. What a beautiful place! I picked up this small lighthouse. It brings back memories and I hope to see the ocean again soon. I remind my hubby almost daily that I want to go on a beachy vacation... :)

More blue jars...my mom made the old beadboard box with dried lavendar.

I love a great bargain! I got the black basket for $1 and old picnic basket for $1 at past garage sales. And the watermelon I made from a piece of a tree trunk I got from the neighbor.

Gluten & Dairy Free Cheesecake

I have been craving cheesecake for quite sometime lately...it's been over a year since I had a piece of cheesecake since our family went Gluten and Casein Free. Cheesecake is my absolute favorite dessert!

So last week, I broke down and made a gluten and dairy free version. Not knowing how this would taste, it exceeded my expectations! Yum! Yum!

The secret ingredient is tofu. I know...don't diss it til you try it. I have never tried tofu before until now. My recommendation is to get Organic tofu. It is made from soy and always get organic when eating soy. Soy is full of pesticides. I got my organic tofu from Trader Joe's for $1.99 (16 oz). So it is very affordable. Also Tofu is a great source of protein!

The ingredients you will need for the filling is:

1 (16-ounce) package silken tofu, drained
1 cup sugar
2 (8-ounce) packages dairy-free cream cheese (I love Tofutti!)
1 egg

2 teaspoons vanilla

I only had 1 package of cream cheese so I cut my recipe in half.

You mix it all together with a mixer or food processor.

For the crust, I cheated. :) I used store bought Gluten and Dairy free Snickerdoodles. I could of easily made some but I was hungry and wanted cheesecake NOW! :) These are a soft cookie so I mushed them to the bottom of a greased pie pan to form the crust.

Then I poured in the cheesecake batter.

Bake in preheated 325 degree oven for 45 minutes.

Turn the oven off and leave the cheesecake in the oven with the door slightly ajar for 1 hour.

Remove from oven and cool completely before refrigerating.

I completely skipped the refrigerating part and dove right in. I didn't even allow time for a picture, but I did manage to take one of it half eaten. :)

Finish cheesecake with toppings of your choice.

I used some fresh strawberries since they were in season.

For a sweet berry topping, I mixed together some strawberries, a little sugar and a dash of vinegar. Then bring to boil in a saucepan. Very easy and yummy!

I definitely give this recipe 2 thumbs up! A simple, yummy and great alternative if you have gluten and/or dairy sensitivities. Or if you just want to try something different to your everyday diet! You will be pleasantly surprised!

Easy Cedar Box Makeover

I have an easy makeover to share that I did recently.

I didn't take a before picture...I know shame on me. But here is the inside. It was just a basic cedar box that my hubby picked up from a garage sale. It's a great little storage box.

But I wanted to pretty it up a bit. I had picked out some scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby. I cut out the paper to cover all the sides of the box. I glued on the paper with Mod Podge. I painted the exposed edges with white craft paint.

I then took my electric sander and sanded the edges of the paper and paint to give a worn look. I then lightly applied some furniture scratch cover up all over the paper and paint to make it look just a little more worn.

I love how it turned out. It's a great piece to hide a few odds and ends in my office space.

Garage Sale Season

Garage sale season is finally here! Even though I am more pickier than I once was, I love to find great thrift finds for our home!

Here are just a few blast from the past thrift finds and makeovers:

I found this box at a small flea market for $1. It had great bones, but gross bird stickers and a felt bottom.

I cleaned it up, removed the stickers and felt. Then I painted it 'country tan', sanded it down and applied MinWax Dark Walnut Stain. It makes a great little box for decorating small gatherings.

I got this great end table at a garage sale for $3. It had great bones and super sturdy. Even has a big drawer on the bottom for storage. It just needed an update.

After cleaning it up, I painted it black, gave it some sanding and applied stain. It's still one of my favorite items in the house.

I got this mini spice cupboard at a garage sale for $5. A little high for me, but spice cupboards can be quite expensive even 'newer ones' like the one I found here. So $5 was a bargain. The first thing to go was the horrible knobs on this thing. It looks like 3 sets of eyes looking at you! With a mouth!

I replaced the knobs with new mini wood ones and also removed the little trim at the bottom. Then I gave it a good cleaning. It was very stinky!! I had to soak it for a couple days even. Once all dry, I painted it black then red on top. I gave it a sanding and then applied stain on top. Still another favorite in our home.

And even though my style of decorating has changed a little bit since taking these pictures, these items still fit in well in our home.

If you came by yesterday and didn't see the Terrific Under Ten Tuesday posted, that was not a mistake. Linky Tools, the site which enables you to link up your projects, was down and has been for a few days now. So I decided to postpone TUTT until next week.

I came across some more craft fair pictures while archiving my personal blog. This craft fair is from October 2008. Time flies! It feels like yesterday.

So much fun looking at these past pics. Gets me in the mood to craft!

Veggies In Disguise Muffins

I love any opportunity to make the traditional dish or treat a little bit healthier if I can. And if I have to sneak it in, then so be it. :) I recently made some yummy muffins that 2 little boys have given me the 2 thumbs up on the results!

Ingredients:

1 cup carrots, finely chopped

1 cup zucchini, finely chopped

1 cup chocolate chips (fresh fruit can be an excellent alternative option)

1 cup walnuts or pecans

1 package of cake mix, prepared according to package directions, but not baked

I didn't have a cake mix on hand, so I used this WONDERFUL GLUTEN FREE CAKE RECIPE!

Add carrots, zucchini, chocolate chips, and nuts to prepared cake batter, stir to combine.

Transfer the mixture to a muffin pan, filling each cup about 2/3 of the way. Bake at 375 degrees F for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean. Do not overcook, as this will result in dry muffins. Once cooled, these muffins can be frozen to be eaten later.

**We used cupcake liners since my youngest son is sensitive to metals**

With the cake recipe I used, this made about 48 muffins. I used leftover frozen organic zucchini and carrots and pantry items I already had. So you get a bang out of your buck and taste buds with this winning recipe!

Really, I am alive. LOL I have been busy at home trying to get organized and on a set schedule. Summer break is just around the corner for my boys. So I want to make sure I'm pretty well set so I can enjoy my time with them while they are home all day.

One of my organizing tasks is updating my private blog for my sons. I came across some old craft fair photos. If you are new here, my mom and I used to do craft fairs together for 5 years. It was a lot of work but we had fun doing it together! I miss it sometimes...

My New Thrift Treasures

Awhile back a friend and I went to a huge garage sale event called the Mother of All Garage Sales. It was a great morning to thrift and hang out with my good friend. The weather was awesome for garage sales and so we hit a few here and there on the way home. I am very selective on what I bring home these days because I have things at home that I need to get rid of. LOL But I found some great deals for my boys and then brought home 2 super cheap thrift finds! I was giddy when I found them!!

One of the items was a great old ladder for $2!! Yes, only $2!! It was at a super nice house so I was expecting a expensive price tag to go with it...yeah you know those kind of garage sales. But they must of thought it was 'junk' and wanted to get rid of it. I quickly snagged it up and threw it in my van! :)

I'm still debating if I should have it inside or outside.

For now it looks great out by our shed.

At a different garage sale and another nice house with expensive prices, I found this galvanized funnel with no price tag. I asked the home owner and he offered $2 for it! SOLD! He had 2 of them and another customer heard that price and he immediately grabbed the other one. He was doing the same thing and putting it in his yard for decoration.

It looks great on my front porch area next to my old watering can.

I got a few requests to see my front porch area. Here ya go. We have a long house but a small porch area.

Recengly, My grandma moved to a smaller place and had a garage sale to help with downsizing. I was VERY selective and left a lot of goodies for other people to buy at the garage sale. I got this wooden box with dividers for 50 cents.

It was raining outside when I was taking pictures...

Inside the box was a lot of 'junk' including some great vintage knobs and hangers. I also grabbed some zinc lids for my old jars. You can never have too many zinc lids. :)

I just love these awesome knobs! I need to figure out a project to do with them.

My grandma had this watering can outside so I grabbed this as well.

It looks great on my white bench.

While I was outside I took a few more pictures of my vintage displays in our landscapes...it was freezing cold and spitting rain, but I'll do anything for my blog readers!

This barn door is one of my favorites. I found it at a vintage shop for $5!

My mom made the birdhouse.

I got this table at an auction for $1. I had my hubby cut down the legs to made it lower to sit outside. It has a few layers of paint...Other items here were either made, $1 or free!

That blue thing is actually a seat off a wagon. I got it for $5 at a flea market and just love the blue color.

We have the worst luck with trees on our property. 2 have been destroyed in past storms and we think on is dying now...So I had my hubby cut this one high so I can make it into a birdhouse perch.

I just love to add vintage finds to my displays! Do you love to decorate your yard with vintage finds?

I am making over our hallway closet that I recently created into my office space...or cloffice as some would say. :) I thought this was a perfect space to add a punch of pattern to really define the space and not look so much like a boring closet.

Following the instructions provided by Cutting Edge Stencils, I rolled on my paint that I had placed on a paper plate, after removing the excess on a paper towel. I used 2 different colors for my stencil design, so I was careful to avoid the areas I had designated for my coordinating color. It's important to apply nice even pressure when rolling on your paint.

I rolled on the white color first then I went back with a clean roller and filled in the remaining flowers and pedals with brown.

After I was done, I used the top stencil that was provided that makes it easier to stencil along the edges and corners.

I am thrilled on how my custom wall came out! It was an inexpensive way to add color and punch to my 'office space'! I love how it looks girly in my boy filled home. :)

Springing up the front Step

I haven't had much time to really decorate for spring. We have been busy with family stuff, I'm so tired from working nights and I've been busy organizing/purging the house. Time is slipping away from me! But I did manage to get a few spring stuff up here and there.

Recently I spiffed up the entrance area of our home. I really don't know what to call it. It's not a porch...it's more of a cement slab. :)

I just love my old watering can. I got it for a steel at a flea market a couple years ago. The old chippy door was $5 at a run down antique place.

A wood flower greets you at the door. I just drew the flower free hand on a piece of plywood and hubby cut it out for me. I painted it, distressed it and added stain to it. A simple and easy project to do. Especially when your hubby will do the hard work for you. :)

I rummaged through my 'junk' and found an old window pane that I painted a long time ago. The basket I got at a garage sale for a $1.

I love my 50 cent chippy white chair! The wreath was also 50 cents. The sign was made from yours truly. And the fence, which is one of my all time favorite buys was $10 at a craft fair. Can you tell that I like a good deal?! LOL

I got my rocking chair out of the basement and moved it back outside for the warmer weather. I got this chair for free from my good friend. You can see the makeover here if you're new here.

Well you will have to excuse me, I have some more purging/projects/playing to do. Until next time!

DIY Subway Art for My Son

This week I created some easy DIY Subway Art! You don't need an expensive cricut or silhouette...but it would sure be nice to have. LOL Come on and I'll show you how to make one yourself!

After I found a quote I wanted, I created the layout I wanted on Picnik.

I recently learned about blockposters.com, thanks to Because (I Think) I Can! This is a site where you can create posters from any size image. You then print it out on our printer. I printed mine at the approximate size of the canvas I had.

I watched Celebrity Apprentice on my computer and I started cutting away each letter with an exacto knife. It was easy, just time consuming. It took the whole episode. :)

I then taped the sheets together for easy stenciling.

I got a 20''x 20'' canvas at Michael's for 40% off. I painted it a shamrock green color as the base. I placed my make-do stencil on top and stenciled away with white craft paint.

This sign was created for my youngest son's new room. I wanted something to best describe how mommy and daddy feel about him and inspire him as he grows. I took weeks looking for the perfect quote. Well at least it took me that long to decide on the perfect one.

This special boy has overcome many obstacles in the past year. We are so proud of him.

And he's super happy because his room is finally done! :) The reveal coming soon!

Resurrection Eggs

This is an old project I shared last year but thought I would repost for any newbies here at At Home With K!

Do you have any traditions to celebrate Easter with your family?

I have a fun and easy project to do with your family as you count down the days.

All you need is an empty egg carton, some recycled eggs from last year (or new) and some trinkets for each egg.

Label each egg from 1-12 with a permanent marker.

The trinkets can be found throughout your house. If you google Resurrection eggs then there are many examples on what you can use for trinkets.

Here is the list that I used for my family's set.

#1 The Palm branch/leaf--represents the triumphal entry. Matthew 21:8

# 2 The 3 Dimes--represent the money that was paid to Judas for his betrayal of Jesus. Matthew 26:14-15

#3 The cloth--represents the scarlet robe that was placed on Jesus during the trial. It was making fun of the fact that He was the "King of the Jews." Matthew 27:28

#4 The thorn--represents the crown that was placed on Jesus' head. John 19:2

#5 The knotted rope--represents how Jesus was bound and led away by the soldiers. Matthew 27:2

#6 The cross--represents the cross that Jesus was made to carry Himself. Along the way, Simon was ordered to carry it the rest of the way. John 19:17

#7 The nail(s)--represent the scars that were in Jesus' hands when He showed them to the disciples to prove it was really Him. John 20:25-27

#8 The dice--represent when the soldiers cast lots (gambled) to see who would get what was left of Jesus' clothes. John 19:24

#9 The sponge--represents the vinegar water that was offered to Jesus while He was on the cross. Matthew 27:34

#10 The Linen fabric--represents when Peter came to the tomb and found the burial cloths that had been around Jesus, but no body! John 20:6-7

#11 The rock--represents the rock that was in front of the tomb. It was rolled away by an angel of the Lord. Matthew 28:2

#12 The empty egg--represents the empty tomb when Jesus had risen from the dead. Matthew 28:5-6

I printed out the list and cut each egg description out into strips and slipped them into each egg.

A simple way to teach my kids the real reason for the season. It's also fun for mom and dad. :)
