LHS Male & Female Athlete Of The Year Chosen

LHS Male & Female Athlete of the Year

Male: Philip Rainwater – He played football, basketball, and track. He shows good leadership skills and is a hard worker. He was All-Region in Football and qualified for upper state in three events in track (100 m, long jump and triple jump). Philip was also named All-Academic All-Region and was a senior who led by example this year.

Female: Hanan Balawi - She was State AA XC Individual Champ and was All-Region in both 1600m and 3200m in track. She also won the upper state 1600 and 3200. Until state track, when she was injured, she had won all her races this year and holds the school record in the 5K, 1600 and 3200.

"Big Check" Presented To Liberty High School From Booster Club

At the LHS spring sports awards program, the Red Devil Booster Club officers presented a “Big Check” to the athletic department for $28,804 representing money that has gone to LHS athletics this year!

This check represents:

Each sports program was given $700 for travel or equipment needs.

All region championship trophies, All-Region plaques and senior athlete plaques are provided each year by the booster club.

Teams are given $10 per athlete / coach for a meal at state competitions. (This year meals were provided for cheer, boys & girls cross country, wrestling, boys & girls track and boys golf)

Sponsored two tables at the SC Football Coaches Banquet where Coach Stewart was honored as AA Coach of the Year.

Items Red Devil Booster Club has already purchased that we needed at new LHS, but were not provided:

Stadium – Benches for the locker rooms in the field house - cost $2,090 Track Saver Mats $2,079

Gym - Runners for gym (carpets to use in front of benches to protect floor) - $2,400

Track - High Jump Pit Package - $5,245 Starting Block & Cart Package - $700

Softball / Baseball – poles for batting cages - $4,500

Golf Cart - $1,000 (LHS paid $1,500) for use to transport items at athletic events

“The Liberty athletes and coaches are so appreciative of the support of the Red Devil Booster Club. They have stepped up to help us meet the challenge during a very difficult budget time, as they have many times in the past! We thank every member of the booster club and encourage all LHS fans to join in the coming year. Our athletic department would have a hard time keeping our programs going without their support. Our officers, past and present, have worked diligently to provide for our athletes.”

LIBERTY — On April 25, 190 employees of Cornell Dubilier in Liberty celebrated BCBS’s National Walk @ Lunch Day.

Cornell employees were treated to special T-shirts to promote the walk and 48 lucky employees’ names were drawn for prizes.

Funeral services to honor the life of Ms. Howe will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

Sandra Lee “Sandy” Howe, 52, of 129 Ross Road, died Saturday at Greenville Memorial Medical Center. Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late Odis Samuel and Mary Frances Pilgrim Howe. She was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are a son, Shaun Howe of Columbia, SC; and a sister, Shirley Edens of Easley.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by two sisters, Wanda Hannah and Gail Hughes; and a brother, James Donnie Howe.

The family will be at their respective homes.

My 2¢ …

I am against gay marriage, against church tolerance of sin, but also against any amendment that legislates morality.

Take a look ... The Bill of Rights is about ... RIGHTS.

Guns, Speech, private property, religion, voting, politician bounds.

The ONLY amendment to legislate morality, the 18th amendment - was repealed!

The churches have a responsibility to their communities to change lives.

Church people need to disciple rather than discipline.

Liberty, SC

William Thomas "Tommy" Sidell, 81, of Liberty, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens.

Born in Greenville County, he was son of the late James Charles and Sallie Rothel Sidell. Mr. Sidell was US Army Korean War era veteran; he was a Mason; he retired from Woodside Mills after 45 years and he was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Alma King Sidell of the home; two daughters, Sherry Spence and husband Larry and Jane Harrison; two grandchildren, Chad Pressley and wife Morgen and Benji Robinson and wife Nikki; 5 great grandchildren, Chance and Brooks Pressley and Kolby, Anna and Emily Robinson and his special cockatiel friend, "Billy".

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Charles Lowell Sidell.

Funeral services will be held at 12 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Liberty, SC.

The family will receive friends from 11:00AM until 12PM Tuesday at the church prior to the service.

The family will be at the home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tommy Sidell Funeral Fund, c/o The Howze Mortuary, P.O. Box 369, Travelers Rest, SC 29690.

Summary Of May 2012 Liberty City Council Meeting

This is a summary of the Liberty City Council meeting held on May 14, 2012.

Councilman Lavant Padgett absent

Boy Scouts Troop 172 attended the meeting and was recognized for their attendance to fulfill requirements for a merit badge. Mayor Michael Sheriff commented that he was in Troop 172 in Liberty when he was young. The Troop took a photo with council.

Luther Johnson - owner of SC Franks spoke in the public forum.

Johnson stated that he, "had come to say thank you."

He relayed the story that he was proud of the City for protecting the heritage and history of the Rosewood Center and that he went to school there in grades 1-11. He turned to those attending and said, "They only went to 11th grade when I went to school, there was no 12th grade."

Geoff Doolittle for being named LMS 2012 Teacher of the Year. Mr. Doolittle teaches Algebra I Honors, Algebra I, and 8th grade math. He can also be seen driving teams to athletic events and running the clock and scoreboard at football and basketball games.

Liberty High School Freshman Abraham Balawi, ran a 4:31.55 in the 1,600 meters to earn 3rd place at the Class AA meet Saturday @ Spring Valley High School.

In Girls' competition, Hanan Balawi, an 8th grader at Liberty Middle, earned 4th place in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:31.27.
