Calvert's "New Age"

John H. Calvert has written this entertaining argument regarding the establishment of "Religious Humanism" as the official state religion. The arguments made are spurious and unsupported. There are rampant examples of basic logical fallacies that I learned about in my first college course on logic.

I have no reason to doubt his account of the process that "Religious Humanism" became "Secular Humanism" however I do think that he over reaches when implying that all Atheists are by default "Secular Humanists". I identify as an Atheist but I am not sure I would identify myself as a "Secular Humanist". I know I agree with some of their tenets but I am not sure, being unfamiliar with a detailed description of their tenets, that I would agree with all of them. What he fails to understand is fundamentally simple and shows his complete lack of critical thinking skills.

The reason it may seem that the tenets of "Secular Humanism" are being taught in our schools is because they are based on the findings of Science. Secular Humanists, by definition, trust Science as the best source of knowledge about the universe. As an rationalist and free thinker, I believe that Science is the best way to arrive at the correct answer. I am not saying that it always arrives at the correct answer. Just look at the Drug approval and recall process. In some cases, the science was bad, and those people should be disciplined. In others, the science was good but just not good enough. However, the vast majority of drugs that make it to the market are never found to cause any issues that were not discovered during trials. Sometimes the side-effects are worth it.

His argument also make claims that are unsupported by facts presented in the argument. For instance:

Its adherents have infiltrated mainstream Christian denominations and are causing them to change their tenets and morality to embrace modern evolutionary theory, sexual promiscuity and other concepts antagonistic to individual and family values historically shown to be so important to a strong, healthy and vibrant culture.

I wonder what Secular Humanists are teaching sexual promiscuity? Is sex education supposed to promote sexual promiscuity? My daughter is 12 and had some health classes last school year in 6th grade and I can tell you I see no signs of sexual promiscuity coming on. Also, what evidence is there that Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection or any other Secular Humanist tenet is antagonistic to values that promote "a strong, healthy and vibrant culture?"

I don't know what I expect from the WorldNutDaily but still, this kind of naive argument needs to be pointed out a laughed at. John H. Calvert, you are either a simpleton with no more knowledge then a second grader or you are deliberately lying to people to further your group's political agenda. There can really be no other explanation of the obviously fallacious argument.

I have an update on the egregious violation of its citizens' rights that the Uniontown, OH School Board committed and I reported here.

This December, the school board has, over their own personal objections, voted in a change of the mission statement that removes "Belief in God" as a core value and replaces it with "belief in religious freedom". I, for one, aplaude the new wording. The jack booted fucktards on the Uniontown, OH school board might think that they are thumbing their noses at people like me and the Freedom from Religion Foundation. What they don't realize is that this is all we ask. They are free to believe in whatever fairy tale they wish to but they are not free to push that belief on the captured audience of the students in their government run schools.

I think it is a lack of imagination that makes them so fucking stupid. They cannot imagine what it feels like to be one of the oppressed minority in their pretty Christian fantasy world. I'd like to know what they would think if the core values in a predominantly Muslim community's mission statement were to include "Belief in Allah". Such empathy is obviously not their strong suit.

What is troubling is that this kind of obvious violation seems to be getting more frequent. This is probably a reaction to the steady chipping away of their beliefs by Science and Reason. As more and more of their beliefs are dismantled by simple logic and evidence they fight back as any irrational group might. The fact is, these people have no real understanding of what freedom is.

School's Mission Statement lists "Belief in God" as a "district value"

In Uniontown, OH, the Lake Local School District's mission statement (pdf) states that they believe "the belief in God and religious freedom are important." This is an absurd oxymoron. How can they, in the same sentence proclaim the importance of religious freedom and that "belief in God" is important? Religious freedom MUST include the right not to believe. Otherwise, how can there be said to be religious freedom at all?

However, I am not surprised. My sister works for the Court of a county government here in GA and at one point one of the ladies in the office suggested that they all get together and pray at the beginning of the day. The idea never took off but not because management stepped in and put a stop to it. They would have gladly participated. It was just lack of enthusiasm for the idea from most of the ladies in the office that killed it. My sister is not an atheist but she is questioning the Christian faith we were raised in and is not truly a Christian anymore. The thought of having to try to find excuses for not attending the prayer was worrying her.

This is the sort of thing that goes on in small towns and big cities across our nation. People who have their heads firmly implanted in the assholes just don't understand that not everyone is exactly like them. They walk around with their heads filled with the simpleminded platitudes that their pastor fills them up with on Sunday and then don't even think about how their behavior infringes on other people's freedom.

New Bus Ads in NYC

There are numerous Christian themed advertisements around the Atlanta area on billboards and on the radio. I would live to see some sort of Atheist sponsored campaign.

Disney Accused of Being Too Gay Friendly

In this article EURweb.com is reporting that Disney is being accused by a Christian group of giving preferential treatment to Gays and Lesbians. The premise of these Christians is ridiculous. They are comparing Disney organized/sponsored events with ad-hoc events that Disney has not participation in. If I were a Christian Preacher and I were to say to my flock, "On May 19th 2009 we are going to Disney World would y'all like to join us?" would that put any onus on Disney to accommodate me in any special way? NO. If we are all buying our tickets at gate prices or in normal ways then each person is in individual in Disney's eyes and they would deal with them as such. Suggesting that Disney favors Gays and Lesbians because it allows them to visit the parks is like saying that they should be asking each guest what kind of person they like to sleep with before admitting them to the park so that they can make sure that they don't let too many Gays in at one time.

This is typical of the Christian world view. They are one of the most powerful groups in the country but when they don't get their way they cry like little babies. President Obama, last week, chastised those that call for Democracy when they are out of power and quickly try to limit Democracy when they are in power and this is the same sort of thing. If Disney were to restrict the number of Christians that could come to their parks based on some fear that they were organizing some sort of ad-hoc "Jesus Day" they would be up in arms about being persecuted. However they have no problem with persecuting another group that just wants to go to Disney World.

I applaud Disney for accommodating these guests and treating them to the same "Magic" that all other guests are provided.

Victimlesscriminal, one of my subscribers, and subscriptions, recently posted this video on you tube calling for the reinstatement of Pat Condell's video "Welcome to Saudi Britain". This video was reposted by Bjovolf, and many others, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB9xkbb83gM. It was supposedly taken down due to a "community guidelines" violation. So I guess that, in Britain, it is not OK to ask people to stand up to the fanatics of a backward religion like Islam.

Pat Condell supported the petition against Sharia law in the UK with his video Welcome to Saudi Britain.

As a result of his usual brave and dignified stand in favour of freedom of speech his video has been removed.

He merely criticised the Saudi-based Islamisation of the UK. He did not incite violence nor hatred of Muslims.

We do not live in Saudi Arabia. We do not adhere to Islamic rules about non-criticism of Islam. We are free to criticise Islam. Intelligent Design is Not Science

I have been arguing back and forth with several Christians and Creationists about the so called "Theory of Intelligent Design". For those of you not familiar with it. Intelligent Design is the theory that the complexity of life and the universe can only be explained by a designer. This designer is supposed to be an entity that can manipulate reality in such a way as to create living beings in all their complexity. I hope I have given a fair summary definition as I am not attempting to create a Strawman.

The ID proponents taut the theory as being a refutation or alternative to Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. I do not think this is actually true. It appears to me that most ID proponents think it replaces theories about the origin of life and theories about the origin of the Universe as well. I find that many of the Creationists that I debate do not understand that Evolution and the Big Bang are two unrelated theories from two unrelated fields of science. They also seem to miss the fact that Evolution does not, in any way, posit a solution to the origin of life question. I think this demonstrates the average Creationists ignorance on the science they are attempting to refute. On the other hand, the "scientists" that advocate ID cannot be said to be ignorant of the science that supports the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

These men are actually committing the cardinal sin of science. They are defining the principal that they wish to "prove" and working to prove it. Science does not work that way. In Science you come up with something you think should be true, given current knowledge, and then you test it with experiment or observation. If it is shown to be correct, great, but if it is not, you adjust the hypothesis or the theory that it was drawn from and try again. In some cases, a negative result leads to breakthroughs.

When the Institute for Creation Research was attempting to circumvent the scientific process to "prove" that the Bible is literally true, it was pretty obvious what they were doing. In the case of ID the problem is a little more subtle. They put forward the concept of "Irreducible Complexity" and have done significant work on describing what such a system would be like with mathematics from Chaos Theory. The problem is they still haven't defined how we can tell an "Irreducibly Complex" system from one that is not. They also have not yet discovered an example of an "Irreducibly Complex" system. They point to things like the Mammalian Eye or the Bacterial Flagellum but these have been debunked as examples of "Irreducible Complexity" by scientists.

However, all this talk about "disproving" "Irreducible Complexity" misses the point. ID fails to be science on two counts. One, even if one could find an "Irreducibly Complex" system, by their definition, it really only amounts to an argument from personal incredulity. aka. The Argument from Ignorance. We don't know how this came to be, so "God Did It". Two, the conclusion, "God Did It", does not actually answer the question. It just adds new ones. Let's suppose that the true answer is that "God Did It", the next question is "How?" and, possibly, "Why?". My guess is that the ID proponent would just want to stop with "God Did It" and not ask any further questions.

On the other hand, if a scientist were to encounter an, apparently, "Irreducibly Complex" living system, their first reaction would be to look for errors in the finding. Once satisfied that there are none the next step is to try and develop new principals and techniques for understanding the system. In the process, the "Irreducible Complexity" of the system will probably dissipate since greater understanding allows us to discover the ways in which the system can be reduced and still be useful.

Barak Obama Supports Religious Discrimination?

This article from Jennifer Loven of AP is about how Barak Obama has started pandering to evangelicals. I have not talked about presidential politics much on this Blog or in my Videos for good reason. I am so frustrated with the choices. On the left, we have a person who talks about change but seems to engage in the same political tactics as everyone else. On the right, we have an ancient politician who started out in the center but seems to be running to the right so fast, I can barely make him out.

Perhaps, this latest move by Senator Obama is yet another example of his naivete. He wants to get evangelicals so he talks about how Bush hasn't gone far enough with his faith based initiatives. The problem is, that so much of his base is made up of folks that think Bush went too far with his faith based initiatives and I agree with them. Maybe he really believes that money confiscated from hard working Americans of all different creeds can rightfully be given to religious organizations who, while they wont technically use the money to fund proselytizing, will be doing so along side any federally funded activities.

In either case, he does not possess the qualities that I want in a President.

Maybe I am asking too much but what I want in a President is someone that will stand up for the original intent of the constitution. Someone that will allow all of us to be free of government interference in our lives. Someone that will use his (or her) influence as President to push forward charities that he (or she) deems useful but not by funneling money confiscated from the people but by promoting their activities.

For those Obama fans out there, don't worry, I am going to take on one of McCain's positions next.

Louisiana Takes a Step Back into the Dark Ages

This is really dangerous. The problem with this sort of legislation is that it will allow religious zealots to attempt to inject their religion in to the schools under the guise of critiquing a scientific theory. I have said this before, but these people are not trying to make sure that their own kids are taught about creation, they are trying to make sure that your kids are taught about creation. They will tell you that they are concerned about their own kid's education but that is a bold faced lie.

As the article points out, these idiots are going to open the flood gates to school districts to incur huge legal fees like those incurred by Dover County. A state law cannot circumvent the constitution. If it is unconstitutional to teach creation in science classes it is still illegal in Louisiana despite its state legislature passing laws that say it isn't.

For all my readers and viewers in Louisiana, please contact your state legislators and let them know that this law needs to be repealed. If you live in a school district that attempts to utilize this law to inject religion into the curriculum, stand up. Fight it!

The fact is, I am not sure that the types of people I want to reach are the ones that actually subscribe to my channel. Not that I don't want subscribers. I definitely do. It's just that, what I hope to do with this blog and with this channel is open up some minds to the fallacies of religion.

Here is a posting of the film Fitna on YT. This is a very disturbing film but I think it underscores the brutality that is supported by religion. The reason there seem to be so few "moderate" muslims is because there really aren't any. If they are truly muslim then they know that their Quran tells them to kill or enslave those who do not believe. So even the "moderates" are just lying to get us to look away while they attempt to destroy our way of life.

I use the phrase "Coming Out" because in many ways coming out as an Atheist is very similar to coming out as gay. It really depends on the types of people that make up your family but I am sure there are some people for whom coming out as an atheist would actually be harder then coming out as gay. I seem to remember someone making a joke about telling your parents you are an atheist so that you can say that you were just kidding and that you were just gay.

I mention the "Institute for Creation Research" ( http://www.icr.org/ ). I do not recommend this site for the weak-minded. It contains dangerously flawed "logical" arguments.
