Sophomore Aleks Golde led the Pace girls, finishing sixth in the state in the individual competition; the team was 12th. For the boys, senior Alex Ross closed out a memorable Pace career with a fourth-place finish, while junior Marc Mitchell was eighth. The boys team placed fifth in the state. Way to go, Pace Knights!

Both teams ended outstanding seasons as state runners-up.
 
Meanwhile, seven members of the varsity track and field team competed in the state meet May 11-13. Junior Ibum Obu finished fifth in the state in the shot put, while junior Jack Douglass was fifth in the 1600 and sixth in the 3200. The girls 4x400 relay team—seniors Julia Ross and Sophie Blasberg, junior Cameron Perchick, and sophomores Justice Jackson and Leah Jones—came in sixth with a new school record.

Coaches throughout Georgia selected freshman midfielder Claire Wierman to the All-State Honorable Mention Team, placing her among the top 50 players in the state, while sophomores Madeline Arenth and Merritt Ann Glass were named to the AAAAA-A All-Area 2 Girls Lacrosse Team. Way to go, Knights!

He will play football and basketball for the Vikings next year.
 
Sommerville has been a key player in the Knights’ recent athletic successes. A three-year member of the varsity football team, he contributed to the Knights’ 2015 state championship, received the Bill Lellyett Award and served as a 2016 captain. He led the varsity basketball team to historic state championships in 2016 and 2017, captained this year’s squad and was named Defensive Player of the Year.
 
A percussionist in the Upper School band for four years, Sommerville was the only player to start on both 2015-2016 state-championship football and basketball teams. He joins 12 other members of the Class of 2017 in pursuing college athletics.

The Knights' journey to the finals began on April 19, when the team swept Lumpkin County High School in the first round of the state tournament. The Knights then traveled to Savannah to compete in the Sweet Sixteen, where they faced the Region 3-AAA champions from Islands High School and defeated the Sharks 3-0.
 
The team then triumphed over Calhoun High School in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four. The Knights hosted Lovett on May 1 and, despite injury and bad weather, defeated the Lions 3-2.

The Knights, 2016's Class AA state runner-up, fell to Westminster in the state finals.

Coach Moreno adjusted the formation, bringing Sammy Lettes into the midfield. From the ensuing restart, Lettes picked up a loose ball and was fouled 35 yards from goal. Phillips stood over the free kick with the season on the line. It was a moment for senior leadership: senior Phillips dropped the ball perfectly on the 6, directly in front of charging seniors Lettes, Brian Sloan and Christopher Howard. For the girls, junior Ibum Obu claimed the championship title in the shot put, while the 4x100 (sophomore Justice Jackson and seniors Sophie Blasberg, Tonyia Johnson and Samantha Moreland) and 4x400 relays (Jackson, Blasberg, senior Julia Ross and junior Cameron Perchik) qualified for sectionals as well. Jackson, Ross and Blasberg also advanced in individual events.
 
For the boys, junior Jack Douglass qualified in the 1600- and 3200-meter races. Sectionals will take place April 29 at 9 a.m. at our Riverview Sports Complex.
