Dr Robert Atkins passed away in 2003, and since then the super-fad of Atkins has slowly ebbed away. This hasn't stopped numerous versions of the Atkins diet appearing on the shelves.&lt;br /&gt;

However, it seems that (like many restrictive diets) the fall-off rate is high. It's hard to stick to, and long-term results are varied.&lt;br /&gt;

Hannah Waterman has struck back at her estranged hubby Ricky Groves after he criticised her &lt;a href="http://536e7n4b-gsbm-e61ctehjbn24.hop.clickbank.net/"&gt;"obsessive dieting"&lt;/a&gt; in an tv interview.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The 34-year-old corrie star, who lost over 3 stone last year and dropped from a size 16 to size six, has denied that the diets took over her life - and explained why she had 4 sets of scales in her home.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Speaking to Closer magazine, she said: "I did the DVD &lt;a href="http://536e7n4b-gsbm-e61ctehjbn24.hop.clickbank.net/"&gt;exercise routine&lt;/a&gt; 3 times a week with a trainer and some weeks it was only once or twice a week. Obsessive is the last thing it was.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"As for having 4 sets of weighing scales - that's because 3 of them were broken!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"I lost the weight at a healthy rate of 2lbs a week or less, directly in line with Government Health Department guidelines. This was no crash diet regime."&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Hannah dumped Ricky, 41, on New Year's Day - leaving him angry and wondering if that another man was involved.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He told a newspaper: "I don't know who the other man in her life is. I have no idea and I don't want to know.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"I feel distraught enough without having a name. I won't play guessing games and I won't ask her who he is because that would destroy me."&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But Hannah has strongly denied there is anybody else in her life.&lt;br /&gt;

CAN you actually lose weight during the holiday &lt;a class="zem_slink freebase/en/winter_holiday_season" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_and_holiday_season" rel="wikipedia" title="Christmas and holiday season"&gt;season&lt;/a&gt; instead of gaining it? Yes, you can, believe it or not.&lt;br /&gt;
If that sounds like the biggest put-me-on of the century to you, let me assure you that it isn’t. I should know. It happened to me.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Back in the ’90s, I pulled off the seemingly impossible. A glorious day it was when I went back to work in early January and people couldn’t believe that there was actually less of me after the holidays than there was when we all took the holiday break.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You know how it is: Christmas ham, stuffed turkey, fruit cake, bibingka, puto bumbong, lechon, embutido, pasta, paella, spirits, ice cream and sweets, sweets, sweets. Hard to resist, by any measure. Plus, what Scrooge is this that refuses to partake of the bounty of the plentiful season?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So did I do a Lenten fast in the middle of the Yule celebrations? Nope. Did I have to give up lechon? Nah. The stuffed turkey? Noo-oh. The Christmas ham? Nyet. But I did lie low on the carbs, tread a might too softly on the sweets, and hardly ever touched any of the good spirits except to toast the coming new year. After all, just a few teeny drops of good-natured alcohol can change me into a fast-talking, crazy sounding other person. So I lay off the stuff the rest of the year.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So here’s the key. My secret solution to the weight loss that year was basically an &lt;a class="zem_slink freebase/en/atkins_nutritional_approach" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atkins_diet" rel="wikipedia" title="Atkins diet"&gt;Atkins diet&lt;/a&gt; approach, tweaked here and there to accommodate Filipino eating habits and food fare. I filled my plate with meat dishes and all the good stuff, but went easy on stuff like lechon sauce and other things that had “invisible” starch and sugar in it. Took in just a tad of sweets at the end of a meal just to get “the taste” out instead of finishing a whole box of fruit cake, as I was wont to do. Went for water or no-sugar soft drinks, and watched what fruits to gorge on, as some of them are very high in sugar. Mangoes and grapes, for example.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now, some people have other preferred diets, but for me the Atkins diet worked. More than the kind of diet you choose, however, it’s your sense of determination and willingness to work toward your goals that will make you succeed at defying the odds during a season of tremendous temptation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This Christmas, I’m hoping many of us can still swim against the current, do the highly improbable and greet the New Year feeling good about our willpower and the great feeling of not having any excess flesh hanging out over our waistlines. As a holiday treat, I’ve compiled some very specific holiday tips on how to actually lose weight during these two or three weeks of outright indulgence. Here goes:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1. Eat small, snack often. Ever heard of the six-meals-a-day diet? It’s principle is, you’ll rev up your metabolism better if you stimulate it more often, but not overwhelm it with copious amounts of food. You can graze and snack on a little here and there all day, so you don’t get overly hungry and eat a super mega meal to make up for the deprivation. Snacks are important, and main meals must be small and tasteful. Skipping breakfast and overly ornate suppers are no-nos.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2. Go easy on the gravy, dressings and high-calorie condiments.&lt;br /&gt;
All of these can be loaded with carbs, sugar and/or fat. When you can, go for vinaigrette or fruit dressings on your salad—but make sure they’re not too sweet. There are hidden calories and spoilers in stuff like ketchup, pickle relish and other yummy condiments. If you enjoy food without too much sarsa or chorva, well and good!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3. Don’t stuff yourself with too much &lt;a class="zem_slink freebase/en/carbohydrate" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbohydrate" rel="wikipedia" title="Carbohydrate"&gt;carbohydrates&lt;/a&gt;; go for the veggies. Nix the all-you-can-eat pasta. Limit your bread intake, and go without rice, especially in the evening, if you can. Veggies are good carbohydrate sources, without too much of the starch. So, if you’re worried you’re not getting enough carbohydrates to balance your &lt;a class="zem_slink freebase/en/eating" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating" rel="wikipedia" title="Eating"&gt;food intake&lt;/a&gt;, just prefer &lt;a class="zem_slink freebase/en/vegetable" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetable" rel="wikipedia" title="Vegetable"&gt;vegetables&lt;/a&gt; over the starchy carbs like potatoes, rice, bread and kakanin.&lt;br /&gt;
4. Drink a lot of water. Water is a great appetite suppressant and it does a lot to rid yourself of toxins. Believe it or not, drinking lots of water will not give you water retention. On the contrary, it will help flush out the excess water in your system that you got from eating lots of salty food. Which is what gave you water retention in the first place.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
5. Get active even if you don’t feel like it. Don’t sit around watching TV or DVDs all day during the Christmas break. Get out and jog, play with the dog, join a family game or just go hit the gym. Being active will not only burn off your fat, it will also keep you from thinking of food too much. It’s Christmas! Celebrate life!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
6. Don’t skip dessert, but have just a little. Have a sliver instead of a big slice of cake or apple pie. Don’t have ice cream or &lt;a class="zem_slink freebase/en/whipped_cream" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whipped_cream" rel="wikipedia" title="Whipped cream"&gt;whipped cream&lt;/a&gt; with whatever it is that makes you sweeter. Just get enough to stop your craving and to “put closure” on your meal for that day. Exercise your willpower. Christmas is when it often gets tested. You will survive.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
7. Don’t worry, be happy. Don’t deprive yourself, actually. Just be sensible. The holidays are happy times and you should go with the flow. In short, be on “diet mode,” but it doesn’t have to show. Just use your head and your all-important “mental brakes” before embarking on a feast to remind yourself about what and just how much you are supposed to have. Abide by the rules of that mental contract and you’ll find you’ll be one happy person come January 2. Guaranteed.&lt;br /&gt;

But does a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, commonly known as the Atkins diet, really work? It is essential in the process of repairing and building new muscle cells vital for growth and is found naturally in milk, cheese, nuts, eggs, meat and fish. High protein foods derived from animal fats are naturally high in cholesterol and saturated fats, and as part of a balanced diet this is no problem as the body receives adequate energy levels and has the ability to break down and utilize its components accordingly. However when the carbohydrates, with its complex starches and fibers, are lost from the diet and replaced with significantly higher than normal levels of protein, and with it the fats from the animal products, the body is more at risk. Effectively, the Atkins diet works, perhaps disturbingly so, because an entire food group is removed from the diet. Furthermore, on a low-carb diet the body does not receive enough calories and so is forced to burn fat. It produces keytones as a by-product which can cause nausea, stomach cramps, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and bad breath amongst other complaints. Balance is key. We must learn to listen to our bodies, and feed them according to our individual physical needs. For centuries food was part of the survival mechanism and yet now we live in a nation obsessed with getting thin regardless of the cost to our health.
