Last Word, a new cocktail and shared-plate dining experience, is now open in the Old Fourth Ward

We recently got our first taste of Last Word, which occupies the former P’cheen space in Highland Walk.

Atmosphere

Warm, modern, comfortable, simple, classy. All of these words come to mind when you enter Last Word. Almost everything in the restaurant is crafted by hand – tables, bar, light fixtures, and booths. Seating includes a communal table and a handful of individual tables for parties of 2, 4, and 6.

Team

Last Word is a social dining and drinking experience with a decidedly Middle Eastern flare. Owner Bernard Moussa’s Lebanese influence combines with the creativity of chefs Edward Russell and Matthew Palmerlee and beverage director Cole Younger Just to deliver an ambitious but simple menu. Add to that input from co-owner Matt Booth of Videodrome and you’ve got a team who knows how to deliver.

Food and Drink

Both the food and drink menu are subject to change depending on the season or availability of local ingredients.

Our visit to Last Word started with sharing the Swedish Punch, an off-menu hot beverage that set the tone for the evening. Available this winter only, the drink made from distilled cane sugar, red rice, and ginger, is served in beautiful Lebanese vessels.

We then enjoyed curry spiced Georgia pecans and sampled the house labneh while awaiting the rest of our party.

Our server walked us through the menu and let us know that the dishes increase in portion size as you go down the list. We placed orders for the Georgia shrimp, Armenian sausage flat bread, and lamb shawarma. All delivered unique and interesting flavors.

We couldn’t resist finishing the evening with dessert and settled on sharing the roasted dates and figs. This was an excellent decision. The atypical dessert was the perfect sweet finish for the evening.

Valentine’s Day

In addition to providing the ideal setting for after-work drinks with friends, Last Word makes for a great date spot. In fact, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to try it out.

The restaurant will offer multicourse meals with optional wine pairings:

4 courses for $65

Wine and cocktail pairings starting at $35

Call Jackie at (404) 343-1274 to reserve your spot.

Running, the #1 exercise of choice, has become increasingly popular these past several years. The therapeutic nature of running has turned “couch potatoes” into marathoners and avid long distance runners. It provides a certain freedom and liberation that other forms of exercise do not provide. With the increased popularity of running, 5Ks, 10Ks, and marathons have never been more prominent; it seems like everyone is not only running for a cause. This trend has brought increased awareness to various illnesses, charitable foundations and political movements in both highly populated cities and small eclectic neighborhoods. Whether you are a running guru or just a light stroller, if you share a passion for fitness, these upcoming running events may “tickle your fancy”. Perennial Properties is a proud participant sponsor of the 2014 Atlanta Beltline Eastside 10K and the Monday Night Brewing Westside 10. This local company has great communities directly on the Beltline and they are opening The Brady in 2015 on the Westside

When you think of “streetcars” what is the first thing that comes to mind? That’s right… Those iconic red San Francisco Streetcars! The ones that you visualize passengers easily hoping on and off from due to their exposed exterior as they travel through the city with the picturesque San Francisco Bridge and Bay in the background. Seems like fun, huh? Well aside from the fun appearance of streetcars, they actually provide some major benefits to the infrastructure and environment of any city. What are those benefits, you ask? Well here’s a handful…

A more comfortable, cleaner, quieter and attractive way to travel within the inner city

An attraction for businesses therefore better economic development for the neighborhood

A more environmentally friendly transportation alternative

A greater passenger capacity than traditional buses

Long term operational savings for the city in comparison to buses

Given all of these benefits, isn’t it wonderful to hear that the City of Atlanta has decided to implement their own version of the iconic street cars, traveling to all of the major points downtown? The City of Atlanta is in their final testing phases of the Atlanta Streetcar initiative. So what exactly does that mean to you?

Well within a few short months, that annoying and completely infuriating downtown traffic congestion can be easily avoided by hoping on a street car and getting where you need to go. Unfortunately, you cannot hop on and off as we imagine our San Francisco streetcar patrons are doing but, you can hit all of the major points of downtown Atlanta. The Streetcars will be operating along a 2.7 mile loop, on Auburn Avenue, through Woodruff Park, on Peachtree Street, Ellis Street, Carnegie Way, Andrew Young International Boulevard, Luckie Street, Park Place, Edgewood Avenue, and Jackson Street.

Despite this initiative and all of its awesome-ness, this will be a big change for the residents and commuters of downtown Atlanta. One that will take some getting used to; therefore, the city has put a major emphasis on streetcar safety during this testing period. While the city is enthused by the excitement of this new development, it is imperative that motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are aware of their surroundings when in a streetcar area and know to stop, look and listen when crossing any streets. We want everyone to enjoy the new Atlanta streetcars but as the cliché goes, “safety first”. Therefore, we ask that you review the safety tips and information that can be found on the Atlanta Streetcar website: http://streetcar.atlantaga.gov/how-to-ride-the-streetcar/.

Passenger service is set to begin soon and the anticipation of expanded lines is already all the “buzz” within the city. In order to get there, we ask that you be safe, cautious and aware. Maybe one day, Atlanta will be known for the iconic blue street cars! Until next time…

Downtown Atlanta just got more delicious.

Bento Hut, a Pan Asian, sushi, and fresh juice bar is now open in the Pencil Factory Flats & Shops at 349 Decatur St.

Head Chef Budi Hardadi (of Sushi Avenue in Decatur and R. Rice in Sandy Springs) brings his unique Dutch-Indonesian background to every dish he creates. We recently spoke with Budi, known by his customers as Chef Buddy, who told us what diners can expect to find at the Bento Hut while we tried some of the dishes he recommended.

First up, was the Chicken Rice Bowl – unlike any rice bowl we have ever had before. This dish provided the perfect example of the Dutch-Indonesian flavor combo. Think coconut butter cilantro lime rice, black beans, sautéed onion and peppers, sweet corn, Asian slaw, and, wait for it, creme fraiche and smoked gouda cheese. We were skeptical at first, but polished off the very generous bowl in no time. The huge portion costs just $6.

Next up we ordered two sushi rolls. $12 and $10 respectfully.

The LOL roll included shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and eel. The Nashville roll grouped smoked salmon, lemon, scallion, cream cheese, and spicy tuna. Beautifully presented, healthy portions, and very tasty. Again, my colleagues and I joined the clean plate club.

Chef Buddy’s friendly staff proceeded to bring us two more dishes to sample:

The Bento Hut Four, a classic bento box with beef yakiniku and chicken katsu provides a complete and varied meal – all for $11.

Finally, (food-wise at least – we haven’t even begun to mention the juices), we sampled the delicious Panang Beef topped with creamy coconut curry and fresh veggies. One word: yum. Another: $8.

As if the flavorful and affordable food options were not enough, Bento Hut houses a full fresh juice bar complete with made-to-order smoothies, cold-pressed juice, and bubble tea. We sampled the Tropical Paradise smoothie, the Mango Mojito smoothie, the Honeydew Bubble tea, and the Crazy of Beauty melon and mango cold-pressed juice. All juice bar offerings are available in 12oz or 16oz sizes and cost $3.50 to $6.50. Get one to go or enjoy it with a friend on one of the restaurant’s couches in the Juice Lounge.

Housed in the space formerly occupied by Chow Bing, Bento Hut’s atmosphere is friendly and comfortable. The restaurant offers delivery within three miles and is available for private parties. The prices and menu offerings (which include gluten-free options) are the same for lunch and dinner.

There is something about the crisp autumn air of fall that invokes an extraordinary nostalgia, pumpkin spice, auburn leaves and crazy costumes. It’s these few weeks of Indian Summer that magically make us all want to go outside, enjoy the crisp fresh air and admire nature changing before us. Maybe because it’s that perfect balance between summer and winter, cool and cozy, sweet and spice; whatever it is there is no reason to be indoors before winter while there are still so many fun things to enjoy outside!

Here are our top 3 reasons to Fall into Autumn:

1) Barcelona Wine Bar Atlanta

For those who have already visited this unhidden gem of a restaurant on N. Highland Avenue, located at N. Highland Steel Apartments, then you already know that Barcelona Atlanta is the epitome of cozy. With their rustic yet, contemporary architecture and wood grain accents throughout the entire restaurant, their outdoor cobblestone patio with a real wood burning fireplace invites all pedestrians that walk by to stop in, curl up and enjoy one of their specialty bourbons. If that’s not enough reason to dine at Barcelona, for fall, they are featuring a bourbon spice rack complimented by 4 different bourbons, lavender bitter, maple syrup and lemon juice to give that perfect blend of sweet and savory. Additionally, their Ensalada Entrevinos is the perfect kale salad (for all you kale nuts out there!) mixed with hazelnut, squash, and drizzled with a house-made vinaigrette. Visit http://www.barcelonawinebar.com/atlanta.htm. Stroll on down to Barcelona. Located at: 240 North Highland Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30307

2) Howl-O-ween Festival & Pet Parade

Ok…so who loves animals? We do!!! This will be more than enough reason for you to dress up your furry friend in a painfully cute costume they’ll resent you for later, and let them strut their stuff down N. Highland Avenue. Help raise funds for the new Old Fourth Ward Freedom Barkway dog park by donating $10.00 towards 2 tickets for the pet parade. This not only includes entry into the pet parade but includes 2 FREE drinks and entry into the festival which will be featuring 5 bands from 1:00PM to 6:00PM. Visit http://www.o4whowloween.com/. So bring out your Franken-weenie or your Jester Jack Russell and come down to N. Highland Ave on Saturday, October 25th at noon.

3) Atlanta’s 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer

If each month had its own color, pink would be the official color for October. Everywhere you turn people, retail shops and cars are donned in the infamous bubblegum pink that is signature for Breast Cancer Awareness. Whether you have been affected by it personally or if there are some degrees of separation, we all have been touch by this epidemic. On October 11 and 12, we encourage you to enjoy this beautiful fall season and participate in Atlanta’s 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. So take a stroll and participate in this 30-mile walk and be a part of the fight against Breast Cancer. Visit http://itsthejourney.org/ to find out more details. Don’t forget to wear your pink!

We hope you are able to participate in one, if not all three, of these spectacular reasons to Fall in Autumn in Atlanta! Until next time.

On Tuesday, August 5, long-time Inman Park favorite, Parish Foods & Goods, announced a new name to suit its new menu and look – all three reworked to better serve its neighborhood patrons and visitors from around Atlanta.

Now known as The Brasserie & Neighborhood Café at Parish, to stay true to its name, the restaurant will serve simple, hearty, food and drink in an unpretentious atmosphere. More specifically, dishes like grilled trout, pistachio sausage, pressed pork shoulder, and porcini-scented bread pudding will appear as small plates or main dishes. The new menu also includes an oyster, shrimp, salmon belly, and crudo raw bar. Unique desserts like the black mission fig crostata round out the menu. All items were selected to support Chef Zeb Stephenson’s goal to “provide inspired familiar food, inventive beverage, and warm hospitality.”

Parish Market, the lively downstairs breakfast and lunch nook frequented by Beltline strollers, will continue to offer breakfast, lunch, and wine events 7 days a week under its new name, The Neighborhood Café at Parish.

In addition to name and menu changes, visitors to the brasserie will notice a new look complete with white marble tables, bentwood chairs, and luxe leather banquettes.
