SOPA and PIPA are laws that would lead to a censored internet, in the name of copyright protection.
You may not have heard about them yet as the big medias are hardly covering the subject because they are all in favor of SOPA. This new set of laws was about to pass silently (less internet = more TV).
It would allow copyright holders to shut down any site with user generated content (even just a little as it could be seen facilitating infringements), without due process, and create an american internet blacklist.
The law is supposedly aimed at rogue foreign sites without describing them in detail. We are a Domestic US site that complies with US DMCA laws, and even goes beyond them. It is unclear if we would become a rogue site under the proposed law, as it would replace the DMCA.
ISP’s, search engines, ad networks would have to cut off such sites quickly, or face penalties, however they would be exempted from penalties if they cut non-infringing sites. That is not exaclty the definition of a fair law. If copyright holders were to gain such powerful censorship tools, they would certainly abuse it, as they have shown before.
Last December all amendments to make SOPA more reasonable were rejected.
It is important to realize that the United States would send a poor message to the rest of the world, as many foreign leaders tend to copy US laws, it must try not to censor internet or chill innovation.
Fortunately President Obama moved on this week-end to announce opposition to this bill.
The future? let’s hope that PIPA gets thrown down too. In any case, President Obama asked for a new law to be passed this year.
With the US elections approaching, we are pleased to hear that personal liberty is becoming more of a subject, and without taking side we are hoping that all the candidates will talk more about freedom and free speech, and having a government that doesn’t think for its citizen.

Here we are at the Holiday time of the year once again. It’s a time for reflection, for gratitude, for family and friends. And for many of us … it is also a time of depression. We call it “the Holiday Blues.” It comes in many forms, for me .. it’s the passing of my mother six years ago. For others, it’s the feeling of loneliness and loss that make the holidays a bit less cheery. Soooo I put together a little guide to make these times a bit easier to handle and maybe even … fun. Take a few minutes to read and digest this guide. It may allow you to have the best holiday ever.

Step One: Be easy on yourself.

Whatever is weighing heavy on your heart, be easy on yourself. It’s a time to forgive yourself. We all do the best we can with the tools we have at the moment. My parents weren’t perfect parents, and neither was I. We all made mistakes. Let that old junk go. It doesn’t serve anything positive and contributes to depression.

Step Two: Love yourself.

It is said, by those people who say such things, that the way to real love is starting with self love, for one cannot love anyone until one loves themselves. If you want more love in your life, start with yourself. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be healthy, You deserve to be prosperous. You deserve the greatest joys that this human experience has to offer. The only question is, when are you going to accept it.

Step Three: Feel your feelings.

If something is really bothering you about the holidays, let those feeling be acknowledged. If you grieve for someone and have never let yourself cry and get through the grieving process, you will continue to be trapped by those feeling of grief. A good technique for letting go of these feeling is to write them down. Write a letter to this person and put down your feelings on paper. Take this paper and burn it letting those feeling escape with the flames. Feel the feeling and then let them go.

Step Four: Make a choice to be happy.

Our moods and attitudes can change in an instant. You can be in a good mod and hit your elbow and suddenly be really upset. At the same time, you can be really upset and have something ridiculous happen that just changes your mood in an instant. I’ll bet you can think of many examples. Were you ever mad at your child or pet and then they just did something soooo cute that you had to laugh out loud? This changed your mood in a split second. We have that power. The power of choice. We choose to be happy. Just as we choose to remember the bad times, we can choose to remember only the good times.

Step Five: Live in the moment.

Right now is all the time we ever have. The past is gone, the future may never arrive. All we have is the present. This moment right now. Waste it, and you waste your life. Grasp it, and you have captured the secret of life. There is an old saying that is wise beyond measure on this subject that says “The past is History, the future is a Mystery, and right now is a Gift ……. that is why it is called … The Present.”

Step Six: Be grateful.

We all have something that we are grateful for. In this time of the holidays, we forget just how lucky we are. We live in a free country where we can live where we want, work at the job we want, marry who we want, raise children how we want, and make as much money as we want. We have a fantastic education system where anyone can get an education. Every city has public libraries where we can access the internet, read books, listen to music, learn a new language and more all for free. Focus on the things that you have and you will find that you have more than you ever thought. Focus on what you don’t have and your life will be filled with lack. The choice is yours.

The holidays is a great time to purge clutter from your life. If you have old stuff hanging around, it is taking up the space that new and more exciting things should be. How can you have a new car if your garage is filled with junk? There is no place to put it. Chances are that if you cleaned up the space, sold the junk and gave away the rest, You will have a space that is ready to accept new and different blessings into your life and you may get a few bucks to pay for that car in the process.

Step Seven: Expect to have fun with the holidays.

Often times our expectations determine our outcome. If we expect to be disappointed, we will find a way to make that happen. Contrastingly, if we expect to be happy and have fun, this will also manifest in your life. You have made the choice to have fun, now let it show up in your life and in your hilidays.

Make this holiday season the best ever. Use this guide and be prepared to have the best season ever, filled with love, laughter and happiness. It is your choice. YOU DESERVE IT.

It’s November and a time for reflection and holidays … mustache and beards. Yes ,, face hair for men’s health. This is a movement started by a NY fireman for November renamed now Mo-vember, and I’m growing some whiskers to support it.

Mo-vember, when I first heard the movement, it made me laugh. The point was to grow mustache and beards to keep men’s health on men’s lips for the month of November. Fireman have a proud history of mustaches and beards. The traditional “handlebar” mustache has been a staple of the fireman fraternity and a true sign of a dedicated mustache man. I’ve never grown one. I tried, but it takes a really special type of guy to pull off the handlebar mustache. I have to be satisfied with the dirt do. That means that although my stash grows in well, it’s still blond colored and fine. If you look closely, you can see my mighty whiskers, but from a distance, it just looks like dirt on my face. So I’m sporting a little dirt stash for men’s health. Hope you like it.

It’s not too late to sport one of your own. I issue a challenge to all the men within blogging distance. Sport a stash for Mo-vember and If yours looks worse than mine, we can shave them off together come December.

Put men’s Health on your lips. A stash for Mo-vember ….. looks good on you … and will tickle someone’s lips ….

The art of not knowing you don’t know

Hello fans I’ve been working on healing from the motorcycle accident and I just haven’t been able to write so I’m really trying to make this a coherent post … if it’s not as fine tuned .. well I’m OK with that and I hope you are to. Today I find myself really contemplating the four states of learning and mastery.

1. Unconscious Incompetence – You don’t even know you don’t know
2. Conscious Incompetence – You know you don’t know
3. Conscious Competence – You know
4. Unconscious Competence – You know it so well you don’t have to think about it

Each of these states are necessary for transformation. If you didn’t know that … well …. you are in the state of Unconscious Incompetence …. you didn’t even know you didn’t know. And this is a great state to be in because as soon as you realize you didn’t even know you didn’t know … you immediately jump to state two .. You now know you don’t know.

Here is a great example. I sell products over the internet. I was talking to a person about a new CD and DVD project I was working on and they looked at me like I was talking another language. “A CD they said??? Dave … they told me … I don’t even have a place to play a CD. Who is your target audience ??? because people 8-40 don’t buy CD’s. I don’t have a CD player, my computer doesn’t have a player .. I get my movies from net-flicks and I have a mac and an I pod and download everything as an iTunes or an app. So if you are planning on selling those to me … you better make it a download.”

Wow … that was a revelation to me .. I was totally Unconsciously Incompetent in my marketing to this group. I am now unconsciously competent in this area and added new titles in digital distribution channels for instant download .. some are right on my site for free and I’m adding more all the time. I still have an on demand service for my physical products so I don’t tie up any money in inventory and they are available for direct shipment to the customer from the manufacturer. I don’t even handle the product and it gets to the customer quicker and cheaper.

So let me ask you today … in what area’s do you find you are not prospering. Chances are very good … that you have some area that you are unconsciously incompetent in and don’t even know your not embracing the thing that can turn your situation around. Be open to new ideas. As technology changes so rapidly, so do your opportunities. The boundaries of the maps are blurred with the digital and online age. We are connected in ways we never even thought of in the past.

So take so time and look at your own competency. We all have areas that we are not so naturally gifted and have to work at. This is the process of transformation. And it is a process. No one person can know everything, but together … and working together we can transform our planet, our lives and ourselves into the people, place and world that we want it to be. It starts with your own journey. If you didn’t know that … you have now become consciously incompetent … thanks for moving one rung up the ladder ….. take a few more steps and see how far you can go … I’ll bet you make it all the way to the top ….

Buskapalooza is an event in Charlotte N.C. where street performers are encouraged to ply their street performing arts and rekindle this grassroots form of entertainment. The history of “Busking” or “the performance of entertainment on the street for tips” is an ancient art and has origins as early as man traded goods. Many times the entertainer would ply at taverns and market places. Anywhere a crowd could gather, the street entertainer could be found. Often the person was more of a sales person who did some form of crowd gathering entertainment and then sell some kind of product … some snake oil or elixir, probably hemp or opium based that was a cure all for anything that ailed you. The performance was only the means to gather the crowd before entering into “The Pitch.”
Modern day performers don’t have any snake oil to sell and must rely on unique and short entertainment that can gather a crowd and pitch a hat call for tips. Some musicians can just leave their case open and have some bait cash and do Ok. Bait cash is money you put in the case first to give people the idea to tip. If you don’t have any money in the case … you must not be very good cause no one is tipping you. That’s the mindset of the street patron. You see …. someone with a crowd of people having fun, makes it easy to draw a bigger crowd. A crowd draws a crowd. You gotta draw the crowd … give them a reason to stick around and watch your show and give them a payoff to tip you or buy your stuff at the end of the act. I’ve worked Underground Atlanta doing street hypnosis and magic with “Lilly the Mind Reading parrot,” my amazon parrot, for years. For Buskapalooza … I stepped up my game … and went in doing just street hypnosis. They already had two or three magicians so I needed to be different and unique. Plus I love hypnotizing people and telling them what it’s all about. I give them some positive suggestions and send them away smiling.

I set out for Charlotte a day later than I’d hoped. I planned to get into town on Thursday for the Friday event but the bike needed a new tire and Thursday was “tire day” so I ended up riding the whole way up and doing the event 10 minutes after I arrived in Charlotte. I brought along my favorite suitcase table and some leather signage that said

It’s not my normal set up. But I was experimenting. I had a fold out chair with a hypno spiral on it that I use with a pendulum to get people to sit in the hypno chair. If they did well with the pendulum … they could sit in the hypno chair and get hypnotized.
My biggest crowds were over 50 people and it was easy . In a word “Fire Eating” … Ok two words …unless I bunched them together .. anyway .. put something on fire and a crowd just comes out of nowhere. I’ve been a fire eater for a long time … and my act travels small and plays really big. If I wanted to do just a fire eating act … I teach someone from the audience to eat fire … It’s totally cool …
For Buskapalooza, I just used the fire eating to attract the crowd and then launched right into the street hypnosis. I’d talk a bit about hypnosis and describe it as I do at all my shows and then start to hypnotize the entire crowd. Those that respond the best I do some instant conversions to deep hypnosis and give them a few cool suggestions that will make the crowd have fun. I have a ping pong ball that has a small red led light and sound gizmo inside and one of my favorite suggestions is that when the ball flashes and makes it’s sound … it’s just the funniest thing ever .. but when it’s not flashing it’s not really that funny at all. Now I have several people all hypnotized to laugh at this red ball at the same time. It’s like an instant laugh track. I can then go into some stand up comedy and have any joke laughed at by my hypnotized friends … the crowd loved it … then I end with some positive suggestions for good sleep and a fun weekend and ….. to join me on facebook and follow me on twitter … hey .. it gets a laugh … and then make my hat call.

I didn’t make a whole lot of tips but had a god time working the crowd. I usually sell some stuff and hadn’t worked out a really good tip line so that part of my presentation was weak and thus the poor hat. But the crowds were big and interested, the shows went well and I hypnotized hundreds of people … and gave them some positive suggestions. Plus … they got some good footage of me doing the show and fire eating for the Documentary “Busk.”

I’d like to say thanks to April Denée who organized the event Buskapalooza and also the Documentary “Busk” and the kind folks of Charlotte who were a great audience. Thanks also to Chris Hannibal for posing the question … “well Dave .. why do you think they didn’t tip well.” and making the trip well worth the experience when I was forced to go within and answer that question. (Did I suck … cause something sucked … I think it was my pitch) Street entertainment is hard work .. and you really find out what people will watch and what people will pay to watch because they are well entertained and found some value in your presentation. It’s like working new material out at the comedy clubs.
Being creative is a way of life and having an outlet to be funny is a blessing. I’ll be doing more spots along the adventure of life and I hope you enjoyed this brief look into “Busking.” BTW I may not have gotten a lot of tips .. but I did get a whole list of emails and names for my mailing list for free products from my website. You see … 21st century busking gathers not just tips but contact info as well. And that’s how you build a following in today’s social network driven marketing. By the way .. I also gave those hypnotized folks on the streets of Charlotte the suggestion that they “like” this blog … and I hope you do too …

Hi all my fans … an interesting topic surfaced this week …
I was at lunch talking with some friends about some of the new TV programs and some how the topic got on Talk Radio. I was amazed at the people … my friends .. who are smart people .. thought that talk radio was some sort of public service and that the hosts are doing good deeds by letting the Americas public know about all these goings on in the world. I was gobsmacked!! These intelligent friends of mine actually thought the hosts had their best interest at heart.
Folks …. I worked for 8 years as a professional broadcaster and I know the talk radio secret formula. So let me lay it down for you … get ready to run for the hills, have your dreams shattered and jaw drop so low you can step over it with flip flops on ….

All Talk Radio is …… ENTERTAINMENT!!! It is not journalism. It is not balanced. It is biased. It is designed that way. And ….. the whole purpose of the host is to get you emotional enough that you call in and challenge them ….. that’s how they have content for the show.

Take a breath … I know that just kicked you in the teeth. You mean (fill in the blank with your favorite talk show host here) isn’t telling us about the war in where ever and how this politician is acting because he /she wants to inform us of “The Truth”

Yes … that’s exactly what I’m saying … they are only working with the topics that have some kind of emotional hook to get the listener involved enough to call the station. It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree, all that matters is than you get emotionally involved to act or react to the topic. In fact … the more controversial the topic … the higher the ratio of callers. The best callers are the one who oppose the host. Remember the host has all the power in the world. They control “THE MUTE BUTTON” That’s right … they have a special button and you are usually on a 10 second delay from the time you speak till the voice is actually broadcast (the bleep button.) They can cut you off mid sentence and drop your call … call you an idiot and instill a riot over the air … “
I didn’t like the way he handled that caller … I’m gonna call in and tell him off …

And so the cycle begins. It’s like the Jerry Springer show …

Here is the secret formula revealed …..
1. Be controversial
2. State Wild conclusions
3. Be Rude to some callers
4. Incite people to call by stating something so controversial and so general that the person must internalize the statement and identify with either agreeing with the statement or Disagreeing with the statement.
5. Call people names on the air.
6. Get people to agree with you about a complaint.

Let me Explain a KEY concept. Here is my ploy. I make some wild controversial and general statement like this. “Everybody wants to kill their parents.” the syntax looks like this : Absolute word (Anybody, Everybody, Always, Never,Whenever, Where ever, etc …) followed by emotional tie (wants, needs, has to, must, etc …) then wild statement .. (kills their parents, believes in aliens, cheats on their spouse, etc …)

By following this formula I have a successful talk show what ever I choose to talk about. A Talkshow that will generate callers and ratings and make anyone money. Now think …. think about a well known talk radio host. What do they say and what do they do …. wait for it … Poof That was the sound of all the mystery disappearing.

This is how is sounds on the air:
“Hi this is —– for —– broadcast network …. I’ve just got to tell you folks .. Everyone who believes in Aliens and that whole global warming thing is just an idiot. What do you think … Lets take Caller number 4 From Roswell .. Hello sir you are on with —-. I think Your an Idiot … how can you say such —– Oh we seemed to have lost that connection .. are you there .. OK I guess he hung up Ha Ha .. Like I said folks those guys are just idiots, don’t even know how to work a phone.”

Now what goes through your head is either yes I agree with him or no I don’t. The person who agrees wants to keep listening because they agree. The person who disagrees listens because they want someone to tell him off and make a different point. Either way, you listen. Either way .. they sell advertising and they win and make money.

No way .. you say … What about —– the consumer advocate. Hello …. McFly ….. This is just a variation on a theme. That guy is a multimillionaire and so is the girl who fills in. How do you think they made that money ….. DOING TALK RADIO. He’s just a bit nicer with his personality but, he uses controversial topics (home foreclosure, credit cards, money scams .. etc…) Same show, different host.

We call it Show-Business. Show and Business. Without the business, there would be no show. The only possible exception to this rule is the shows that are totally on the internet … but wait ….. the popular ones have …. sponsors. Yes even those shows are traffic driven and depend on money to continue producing content for the show. So what do these shows do?? They put electronics in a blender and see if it will “Blend.” And now … all the videos on YouTube have an ad that runs below them.

So enjoy these shows for what they are and don’t get all hung up on whatever they say. It’s entertainment. I believe … I believe … I believe …. That’s all… folks!!!

I’m just going to start this blog post out with a disclaimer. I feel that whatever your spiritual path, if it helps you get through the day, be a better person and help spread love and joy in the world, then who am I to argue whether one spiritual practice is better or more right than another. Having said that, I went to a lecture and workshop given by author and speaker Caroline Myss this weekend. I didn’t stay for the entire weekend just the Saturday session. Let me just say that many people really enjoyed the event and walked away with a better attitude. I was not one of those people. Let me explain …..

I work a lot of these events and have for many years. I am always looking for good speakers to listen to and analyze their success model. Caroline Myss has written several books and quoted extensively from her book on St Teresa of Avia. Caroline is from the north and has that northern kind of personality that can be abrasive to those of us from the south. She immediately set the tone of the event when our hostess politely told everyone that Caroline does not want people getting up and getting coffee and eating snacks so to please be respectful of her request during the workshop. Some of the first words out of her mouth were .. Now that she has told you so politely let me just tell you how it is. She then proceed to scold the group and claimed that she was an intense teacher and could not deal with those kinds of distraction .. looking over her glasses like a 2cd grade teacher to a bunch of children. Now I can see her wanting to keep the distractions to a minimum, I just found her method and condescending attitude a bit abrasive. That was just the start of the day.

As a hypnotist, I am an expert in the methodology of subconscious programming and the power of suggestion. The day was filled with wild claims that Caroline “matter o factly” claimed were truths and universal laws. One thing she said that really took me back was her saying that words like “Spirit, the divine, the energy and other words that describe the power of the God of our understanding were all weak words with no power, that will never have power and that we should only use the more personal name of just “God.” Then … she used the words “The Divine” all through the day. The divine this and the divine that … ??? I was perplexed.

She also spoke the next day at our Sunday Service. Some of the first words out of her mouth were “I wrote the book ‘Defying Gravity’ for this reason … now this is not a plug for the book .. it is not a plug for the book.” Now as a hypnotist … I know that the words “not and but” have specific purposes. Our minds tend to skip over these words so the line … “this is not a plug for my book” in our minds becomes “This is a plug for my book.” I found these little linguistic tricks littered through out her entire talk. She told us about her work as a medical intuitive and that she had no interest in that.. none .. no interest … and yet she did that work, claims she was really good at it, and made money with it for many years while all the time claiming “I had no interest in it what so ever.” Perhaps I’m a bit naive, but how do you continue to do work, healing work, for many years, excel at it and claim that you really have no interest in it at all???

I think my biggest issue with her was the fact that she claimed to have this knowledge about what she wrote about and that the knowledge was”The Way It Is.” My question was, “How does she know that” … in my opinion .. anyone, including me, who tells another human that they have this secret knowledge that is “the way it is” .. is really just saying .. that is the way I see this area from my perspective and the knowledge I have at this time. Especially with all the advances in technology and the understanding of our world, things are changing and revelations are abounding. I wrote an earlier post about how in the 1400′s everyone knew that the earth was flat, there was no such thing as gravity and the earth was the center of the universe. All of these were false assumptions.

The “New Age” community is filled with prophets and teachers who claim absolute knowledge. I think that this is dangerous. No one has true knowledge of the workings of our universe. We each have our ideas. Those ideas become beliefs and then we act on those beliefs to create our reality of the world. If your ideas help you in this world, then who am I to say they are right or wrong. The big three religions would also make this same claim, that they are the true holders of the secret knowledge that will give us everlasting life. Really..??? I mean come on folks … all three can’t be right can they??

The one thing that really stood out for me about Caroline Myss and her attitude was that she revealed, even though she gave advice on relationships and children, she has never been married, has no children and is not in a relationship right now and hasn’t been for many years … hinting that it could be as many as 20 years or more since she has been in a real physical loving relationship with another human being. I think this goes a long way to resolving in my mind why she seems so “I’m Right and I don’t care what you think about it” attitude. It also explains why she is so fascinated with St. Teresa and her monastic life. If fact, it seems to me that she relates so well that she has orchestrated her life to model that life in the monastery and has put such a shell of resentment toward physical contact that she is out of touch with the humans of this planet.

As I said in the beginning of this post, I’m sure some people got a lot out of the weekend and that they are changing their lives for the better. At least that is my hope. I know that what I got was that I certainly think a bit differently. I want to be a person of love, who embraces the human condition and keeps my love in the world not locked away in some monastery.

In closing I’d like to say “Blessings to you Caroline – I hope you find everything you are looking for. Thanks for sharing your message with us and I wish you safe journeys. May the love enfold you, the power protect you and the presence watch over you.” And maybe .. just maybe … you should find a Cabana boy and lighten up a little bit.

I’d also like to thank the people who brought Caroline to our campus. It’s tough finding soul-filled events for people to share. I think these folks are doing the best they can and I salute their efforts. A heartfelt and simple – thank you.
