A lady was simply not dressed properly without these items. One met their friends downtown, had lunch and attending the world of fantasy at the Fox Theatre. Somewhere during the 1960's, style was thrown out of the window and the crowds looked like "bums" or "street people". Sorry, that is just a fact. It is much more fun to dress up and look nice. You feel better about yourself.
Rich's in downtown Atlanta became a historical landmark. It was first known as M. Rich Dry Goods Store and was built in 1867 at 36 Whitehall Street. Three brothers owned the store, Morris Rich, Emanuel Rich and Daniel Rich.
In 1872 the store was moved to the corner with Hunter Street and later in 1881 to 54-56 Whitehall Street. The vastly high ceilings, crystal chandeliers and an upward ride up steep escalators to other floors gave one the feeling of eloquence while glancing down the well of the store's interior. A popular pastime during the Christmas was to take children to Rich's to ride in the Pink Pig, a contraption which ran on a track near the ceiling of the store. Also, Rich's featured the "Great Christmas Tree" which was lit at Thanksgiving evening and attended by large crowds as a spectacular event.
Jacob's Pharmacy was located across the street from Pemberton's Pharmacy near the corner of Broad and Peachtree Streets. I remember those days well. A trip downtown on the local bus always included a paper glass of coca-cola inside an aluminum cup holder. Price: 5 cents.
Initially, it was used to cure headaches until a customer requested soda to be added and that did it! During the 1940s and 50s we did not have McDonalds, so Jacob's drug store became a teenager's first job. My sister, Marianne Holland, worked there. Naturally, she had to arise early and catch a bus to downtown since few persons had automobiles.
Later on, the site was torn down and it was replaced by the First National Bank of Atlanta. The location of Jacobs was remembered by all as a well-known pharmacy. The soda fountain was a long angular structure with stools and throughout the drugstore were tall cherry counters with glass encasements.

The Atlanta Crackers paid here for almost six decades. In 1907 the team was in the Southern Association, which ended in 1959. I recall attending games in this park walking through wooden corridors and sitting in wooden stands. The bleachers were always full of excitement and drama. The location was 650 Ponce de Leon Avenue at North Avenue. During these years there was also a popularly attended skating rink.
In 1872 he debuted in Chicago with Texas Jack Omohundro in The Scouts of the Prairie. The troupe travelled for ten years. One of his shows included the story of Warbonnet Creek where he claimed to have scalped a Cheyenne warrior for the death of George Armstrong Custer. In past days, it was well-known that Cody brought his troupe to Atlanta and performed in Piedmont Park. There was a railroad track going through the park and he staged his performance at the end of a spur.
is what coal looks like! During the 1940's coal was still delivered to Atlanta homes to heat the furnace. We had an old coal furnace in the basement of 951 Edgewood Avenue. A truck came to the house and opened a window-shute which sent the coal to the basement . In those days, us children went downstairs with our coal buckets and shovered it up. It was a necessary chore but the coal fired up the furnace heating the house. I do not recall anything being dirty about the heat circulating throughtout the house. It was a way of life that that time in history.
Pretty hefty for genealogists who dig through records searching for relatives. However, this is the surest method of discovery. Here are the options. You can make a trip to one of the court houses in the county where your people resided and examine the records there. This always has pitfalls. For one thing, many court houses have placed the old clerk's record books into storage and many of the originals which were kept in file cabinets have simply been lost. No matter, because the clerk copied in his own handwriting each and every document. That is what you need: the clerk's books of inventories, estates, annual returns, vouchers, receipts and wills (last wills and testaments). If a person died intestate (without making a will), you should still find some record of that estate in the probate office in the form of returns, inventories, receipts, etc. Do not expect the employees to have any expertize whatsoever in the knowledge of where the records are lodged. Sometimes there is a big hassle, as in Chatham County, where you have to make specific requests and then wait 2 or 3 days for the records to arrive from storage. The next option is to go to the Georgia State Archives and examine the records on microfilm. Another problem. Due to budget cuts the archives is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. Watch out for Friday holidays, because they get the following day off. This month, there will be two Saturdays when they are closed. So that draws it down to 6 days for the month. Also, please phone before making the trip as there is discussion as to whether to close the archives to the public.

Luckily, Georgia Pioneers has been digitizing the county records to that website for the past several years. This is the largest genealogy website or Georgia records.
