We all look forward to the comfort of our beds after having a long day. This is the place where you want to relax and have a wonderful rest to get yourself ready for the next day. It’s usually common for us to toss and turn in our beds especially if our beds are really soft and nice to lie down. It is important to have a comfortable, well-built bed to have a real good sleep of at least eight hours every night.

We may not always stick to this rule but we do spend a lot of time in bed. We have seen the same kind of rectangle and sometimes round shaped beds and have not allowed our minds to think further than that. Model #LTE5243DQ6, this laundry center with the washer on the bottom and dryer on top is a favorite of apartment and condo complexes everywhere because they can fit into very small working spaces. The washer on this machine was operational, but when the tenant would use it, the tub would bang against the side of the cabinet and make an awful sound. When the wash was complete, the tub seemed to be leaning to one side, which the maintenance person figured was the problem. Being a busy guy with other things to do around the complex, he gave me a call to get this fixed and clear one more of his repair orders.

The laundry center can pack allot into a small 24 inch space and they really do work well given their size and capacity. They work off the direct drive platform of the larger Whirlpool washers and share many of the same washer parts, while the dryer portion is also quite similar to it's larger relative. There are some significant differences, however that need to be known when looking at these units, or you may find yourself ordering parts that either don't fit, or don't even exist on this model. The most significant of these is the suspension system which is far removed from the larger direct drive models.

A leaning tub on a larger model is usually an indication of a broken centering spring, but the tub can still be centered simply by moving it over with your hand. On the laundry centers, the entire base assembly has be replaced with three rather beefy looking springs that hold the entire tub, and drive system in place. If one of these springs breaks, or breaks loose from the base of the washer, the results will be an off center tub, and lots of noise during operation.

When I first looked at the washer, the tub was leaning to the right rear of the unit which tells me at least one of the springs is no longer working properly. Once the top and front panels were removed, I could get a look at the springs and found one had started to work itself apart causing the obvious tilt of the tub. Further investigation found the bottom half of the spring that threads into the base had stripped the threads from the base screw and was no longer holding on. The condition of the right rear spring wasn't much better so a new spring kit was in order for this washer.

The spring kit consists of three new springs, some screws, a tube of locktite(tm) and instruction to make everything better. The new springs look just like the originals, with the addition of a screw in the side of the upper half to prevent it from coming loose from the bottom half. It doesn't seem very likely, but these washers tend to see a little more abuse than the average laundry appliance, and it's usually in the form of overloading. This little washer doesn't hold much given it's size and when overloaded, is subjected to more wear and tear then it was really designed for. This makes the washer work harder, and puts more force on the drive and suspension components making them start to come apart. With this new screw, the two halves cannot split in two as easily and should help prevent further damages as a result.

With the base removed from the washer section for easier access, I replaced each spring one at a time starting by removing the top nuts, then turning the threaded spring base off the machine base. One was stripped out as I mentioned earlier, but a good fix is to use a 1/2 inch nut under the base to hold it together. Much better than trying to replace the entire thing. With all three springs replaced, I put it all back together and now the tub sits right in the middle again. And after a little information to the tenant about how to prevent this and get better use out of the machine, I was off to another call.

Fireplace Decorating Tips

A great majority of the time I work out of my home and the boundaries between my work and home life have become blurred. They say your home (or a least your bedroom) should be a retreat and while I’ve done my best to make it so, after a certain period of time it just doesn’t always feel that way (at least not for me – my friends love coming to my apartment to hang out and unwind) and I have an incredible urge to do something different and calm them down a bit even though my bank book says otherwise.

Psychologists say that watching a fire sets the human mind at rest. Fire has the power to draw the observer into it and out of ordinary space and time. Meditation and candles are nice but are no longer doing the trick for me.

So what’s one to do when space is limited and logistics need to be simple? As a New York City resident, my abode doesn’t have a chimney but there are ventless gel indoor fireplaces that alternatives even for people like me who are renting or living in a condo.

Here’s what I’m thinking – a contemporary clean gel fuel fireplace I can mount to the wall or have freestanding. Gel fuel fireplaces are generally realistic, a little smaller and have more models with contemporary styling than electric fireplaces. Just the thing to go with my pop art collection. Gel fuel is isopropyl based that is thickly blended with an organic chemicals to provide the essential warmth every homeowner's or apartment dweller’s need. Furthermore, the burning experience created from this magnificent gel fuel is further enhanced by the addition of sea salt in order to produce a sparkling light alongside with a seemingly original crackling sound as if originating from a real wood pro.

The beauty of it all is that I get to sit back and enjoy a cozy ambiance. And if I get a little bored with the décor and need a change of pace, I can just move it to another room. Just the thing for a mildly neurotic, environmentally conscious (or at least I would like to be) woman who needs to r-e-l-a-x and slow down.

For those of you who are curious, I have narrowed my choices down to three:

Making Use of Color Effectively

Following are examples of popular color associations:

Blue is the color of the sky, water and mountains. In the northeast part of the country,
gray-blue shades are associated with weathered wood that's reminiscent of Nantucket.
Blue exteriors are calming, relaxing and fit in with any landscape.
Red on a home's exterior is most commonly associated with nature's flowers and fruits.
Nature uses red in most cases as an accent, especially when seen in bright, clean shades.
Deeper, grayer-toned reds are common in Midwestern farm areas and northern areas of the
country and therefore have a very warm, friendly rural feeling. Reds are also associated
with fall leaves and bark and work well in landscapes that experience all four seasons.
Yellow is strongly associated with sunshine. It also has strong links to flowers,
especially in the spring. Traditional associations, such as energy and intellect,
do not translate well when yellow is used on the exterior of a home.
Yellow homes appear to be clean, fresh and happy houses.
Green in many parts of the country is strongly associated with nature, new growth,
trees and shrubs. Greens that are more yellow-based will be associated with new
growth and springtime. Deeper greens are linked to maturity, such as older plants or trees.
Keep in mind when working in arid areas of the southwest that there are limited associations
to this color in nature, so use it sparingly as an accent color, if at all.
White is generally associated with adjectives such as pure, clean, new and bright.
These are all positive associations, but be careful of using too much white on your
exterior because it can be very boring. If you really want a white house, make sure
you use some other colors to add interest, personality and drama.
Brown is most frequently associated with earth, Mother Nature and warmth.
Since many James Hardie® siding textures resemble wood, shades of brown
authenticate this look and can enhance design.

If you're anything like me, you may be somewhat ambivalent about the holidays. It's great to have some time to catch up and reconnect with friends and family over meals but anyone who hosts Thanksgiving knows it is a boat load of work and can be quite stressful (even if you have the luxury of catering the whole affair).

If you're entertaining at home preparation is the name of the game. With friends and their kids or even with someone who had one drink too many, bank on someone spilling something on the furniture. It's just par for the course (especially when you have any children under the age of eight in the room -- although the over-enthusiastic men over 35 tend to be the worst offenders).

So here are a few suggestions on how to get through entertaining through Thanksgiving without a panic attack, an ulcer or worse yet having to buy new furniture.

1. Slipcover Your Way Through the Holidays

Defy Convention and slipcover your way through Thanksgiving and the holidays. You heard correctly. Today's slipcovers are not the ones your grandmother used to have. Those days are long gone. Think of slipcovers as fashion for your furniture and slipcover your way through the holidays where possible -- particularly in your dining room. Not only will it look like you've redecorated but if anyone spills anything on your dining chair covers, just throw them in the washing machine on a cold water setting with some laundry detergent and you'll be good to go again in almost no time.

Once your dining room is covered (excuse the pun) consider slipcovers for your living or family room. Better to be one step ahead of the guys who are going to destroy your home while watching college football. We recommend the stretch pique slipcovers to provide fitted, more tailored look. A few additional decorating suggestions on slipcovers:

Microsuede is popular, durable and tends to be quite stain resistant. If you like the feel of faux suede and you're looking for some texture you really can't go wrong. Lighter neutrals such as bone have a relaxed, yet elegant feel. If you're looking for more drama and some "pop" go with a hazelnut or better yet a rust color.
Personally, I'm more for the ribbed cotton fabric, at least for my dining area. I like things simple and very clean and this fabric works well in both casual and contemporary settins.
Other people we know tend to like the damask patterns for fall. The colors and leaf pattern do convey a more rustic country look and also work well with formal traditional settings. We're finding that damask is gaining in popularity this year.

2. Pick Up Some Storage Ottomans

Once the party moves out of the dining area, a pair of storage ottomans are quite versatile and can do double duty as a coffee table, side tables, or even foot stools in a pinch. They're great for storing those little odds and ends -- an extra throw or blanket or for storing toys the kids can play with while the adults do their thing. And with anti-slam hinges there's less of a need to worry about an unexpected trips to the emergency room.

If you're looking for something simple that can work with either classic or contemporary decor, the brown faux leather ottoman in espresso is a good choice. How to Deal with Frigidaire Dispenser Light Problems

Model #GLRS234ZAW2, this side by side refrigerator had been doing it's things for several years now, but some time ago it developed an unusual little problem. It seems that when the freezer door was closed, the dispenser light would turn on, requiring the light button to be pressed to turn it off. And along with that, sometimes the cubed and crushed indicator lights would be on at the same time after the door was closed. Not the end of the world, but after a few years, the cover over the light button broke free and now that the house is for sale, it was time to see about getting this one fixed.

When diagnosing dispenser issues, we often don't need to look any further than the dispenser itself. Many have their own logic boards built right into the housing to control the various functions of the dispenser. These boards will take input from the each of the push buttons and actuator arms, then send the appropriate output to such things as the ice auger and water valves. It is important that the units wiring diagram be consulted before doing electrical checks because many are not communicating with another board somewhere else in the appliance. This means we won't always find voltages we would have expected from similar refrigerators just a few years ago.

The dispenser problem on this unit is actually a known issue that dates back to 2002, and has to do with a bug in the programing of the original board. From time to time, little problems like these come to the attention of the manufacturers and new part numbers get substituted for the originals. So the repair on this refrigerator was nothing more than replacing the dispenser control board located directly to the dispenser face panel. Not to be confused with the dispenser power board mounted just above the dispenser levers. That board has 120 volts AC going to it while the board we are changing is all low voltage.

With the dispenser face free, after removing three screws, the board can be freed from the panel once the four small screws are removed. I installed the new board and connected the wiring harness back into the connector, which does not have a keeper by the way so it can come loose easily. This usually keeps the cost down, but unfortunately, this part is no longer available and there was no substitution part listed. And only 8 years old. What are the odds. The good news was I was able to track down a suitable used replacement part that helped bring some curb appeal back to this refrigerator and possibly help with the sale of the house.

What they experience in the showroom will ultimately determine the final decision. While knowledgeable, talented designers, courteous staff and even home-baked cookies all help the process along, it is often the atmosphere and special amenities that the showroom has to offer that push the homeowner to give the final approval.

The six firms featured in this look at innovative showrooms all take a different approach – one that sets them apart from their competition and keeps customers coming back for more.

mile-high amenities

For husband-and-wife design team Ronald Purcio, CKD and Debbie Harte, a change in direction was a boon for business. The couple’s daughter Carrie Harte, who now works with them and a team of designers and support staff in the family-owned company, suggested opening a retail showroom where clients could find everything they were looking for.

While the planning and opening of Styles Kitchen and Bath in Basalt, CO in 2010 coincided with the decline in the economy, the strategy has paid off for the firm, which caters to the affluent Aspen community.

“Shopping in our area is limited, and most people want to enjoy their time here doing other things like skiing or hiking,” notes Harte, CFO and office manager for the company. “So, we created a complete home design center with virtually everything they will need to create their new or remodeled home.”

“We feature everything – from cabinetry, wine rooms, countertops, appliances, tile, lighting, kitchen and bath fixtures, faucets, hardware and much, much more,” she adds. Names such as Bentwood, Ronbow, Sub-Zero, Viking, Silestone, CaesarStone and Grothouse Lumber are found throughout the 6,000-sq.ft. showroom. Plumbing lines include products from Toto, Graff, AquaBrass and MTI Whirlpools.

Almost everything in the showroom is live, from the kitchens to the showerheads and tubs. Two working kitchens – the Modern Kitchen and the French Country – often act as sets for cooking demonstrations and other events.

Designed by Purcio, the showroom features an open mezzanine that “gives it a ‘wow’ effect from the entrance,” says Harte. Special attention was given to every space or display, she adds, citing the 300-year-old beams in the French Country Kitchen.

an artistic touch

At Ispiri, good design is in the details. So believes owner Jason Fabio, CR, and the rest of the showroom staff.

Based in the east metro area of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN, the 2,500-sq.-ft. “inspiration center” invites visitors to touch products before they buy.

“Our showroom is meant to provide our clients a place to create ideas for their homes,” notes Fabio. “They will be allowed to touch and operate the products; the refrigerators work, the dishwasher drawers operate, as does an oven and range.”

The most unique aspect of this space, according to Fabio, is a fully functioning operating kitchen. “Here we can host instructional demos, cooking classes or industry-related seminars,” he reports.

Surrounding the working kitchen are a number of vignettes – complete with attention to detail and artistic touches – featuring a range of products. Ispiri is a Dura Supreme cabinet dealer, and also has 13 different countertop manufacturers on display including Cambria, Eco-stone, Heritage Wood, Paper Stone and Rinato. Plumbing brands include Toto, Kohler, Delta and Rohl. Five different appliances brands are on hand, as well.

In the end, “we want our clients to feel special and appreciated. Remodeling does not have to be stressful and hectic,” says Fabio.

1. Turn on your A/C. Your air conditioning system not only filters the air inside your home, it helps remove excess moisture that can lead to allergy-triggering mold and mildew. Buy a humidity gauge at a home improvement store; if your home's humidity registers above 50% with the air conditioner on, your system may not be sized properly.

2. Change your furnace filter. Inspecting and replacing your furnace filter regularly helps your HVAC system filter out allergens more efficiently.

3. Leave your shoes at the door. And change your clothes after spending time outdoors. Otherwise you're simply tracking in pollen and other outdoor allergens and distributing them throughout your home.

4. Wash sheets and pillowcases weekly in hot water. Encasing pillows, mattresses and box springs in plastic covers will also help control the growth of dust mites.

Martin Luther King III Steps Down From His Position at the Atlanta Center

ATLANTA — The eldest son of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. announced Tuesday he is resigning as president of the Atlanta center that honors his father's civil rights legacy.

Martin Luther King III broke the news in a statement a day after the holiday marking his father's birthday. Last week, his sister, the Rev. Bernice King, took over as chief executive officer — a role previously held by King III. Their brother, Dexter, remains chairman of the board of trustees. King III said he will remain active on the center's board, but plans to launch a new organization dedicated to the principles of nonviolence, social justice and human rights.

"For me, the state of the world and its radically shifting winds in the wrong moral direction, summons the words of my father," the statement reads. "I am responding to my father's words by renewing and expanding."

In 2006, King III started Realizing the Dream, a nonprofit dedicated to carrying on the unfinished work of his parents addressing war, poverty and racism, and promoting nonviolent conflict resolution. He was not immediately available for comment Tuesday on the status of that organization, or to elaborate on his reasons for leaving The King Center.

"While his decision does not reflect the wishes of the Board, we accept his resignation," The King Center said in a statement. "We understand that he will continue in his capacity as a member of the Board of Trustees. We wish him the best in his endeavors."

A call to Bernice King seeking comment was not immediately returned on Tuesday. King, 54, and his siblings are lifetime board members of The King Center, which was founded by his mother shortly after her husband was killed in 1968. The center was built to preserve and promote King's teachings and ideals, and is also the sacred spot where he and his wife are laid to rest. In recent years, family infighting has strained their relationship and put the siblings at odds over the center's future.

King III became president and chief executive officer of The King Center in January 2004, but was removed from the position after Dexter became board chairman. In 2005, King III and Bernice King split with the center's board over a possible sale of the King Center to the National Park Service, which owns and operates an adjacent historic site.

The siblings were embroiled in legal battle for more than a year before settling out of court in 2009. King III and Bernice King sued Dexter King, accusing him of acting improperly as head of their father's estate, which the three of them control as a private corporation. In the lawsuit, they claimed he shut them out of decisions involving King Inc. and refused to hold a shareholders meeting since 2004.

King III resumed his position as head of the center in 2010. This weekend, he announced plans for a major overhaul of the King Center at its annual fundraising gala.

NORTHEAST COBB — Athletes from around the state have gathered in Cobb County this weekend for the annual Special Olympics Georgia indoor winter games.

The games began Friday night with an opening ceremony at the Cobb Civic Center in Marietta. Atlanta Dream basketball player Lindsey Harding was the grand marshal. Today will be the final day of competition, with a unified basketball game scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon at All-Tournament Players Park at 3910 Canton Road, just south of Ebenezer Road, in northeast Cobb.

The games are free and open to the public.

Competitions took place at various locations in the county, including Brunswick Zone, The Cooler, Marietta Middle School and Cobb Civic Center. About 2,800 athletes, coaches and unified partners have participated in basketball, bowling, floor hockey, powerlifting, artistic gymnastics and roller skating.

This year marks the 20th year that the Special Olympics Georgia indoor winter games have been conducted in Cobb. Spokeswoman Wendy Bigham said the many athletic facilities available in the county make it an ideal place to host the annual event.

“Cobb County has always been welcoming and enthusiastic to host all of our athletes and families that come across the state to compete,” said Bigham, a Vinings resident.

Many athletes from outside metro Atlanta stay in the county’s hotels and eat at local restaurants during their weekend stay for the games.

The games cost about $188,000 to conduct each year, according to Special Olympics Georgia. The money, which comes from sponsors and grants, goes toward housing, transportation, facility rentals, medals, meals and the opening ceremony for participants.

On Saturday, Michelle Praiff, 20, of Powder Springs, competed in team basketball with her Cobb Lakers teammates at All-Tournament Players Park. Praiff is a Special Olympics veteran, having participated in the games since she was 14 years old, at the urging of her sister. She also plays softball, swimming, and track and field.

“I enjoy it and seeing everybody happy, when they make (free throw) shots and when they see the trophies,” said Praiff, a Hillgrove Transition Academy student. “I get happy because seeing them makes me happy.”

Special Olympics Georgia provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for more than 23,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. During its 40 years, the organization has grown to include 24 sports.

More than 1,500 athletes and 100 unified partners — participants without disabilities — will compete this weekend, with more than 500 coaches guiding them.

In 2004, Pat Thoreson, head basketball coach of the Cobb Celtics, said he first became involved in the Special Olympics to support his disabled stepson, Sean Concepcion, whom he said is a talented athlete. Since then his participation has grown to a variety of sports.

“In regular life they’re ostracized,” he said of the athletes. “They don’t feel like they’re a part of either school, work or play. Here, it gives them a chance to feel liked and accepted.”

Stacey Tomberlin of Dallas agreed. Her 17-year-old son, Ryan, has been involved with the Special Olympics since he was 8 years old. He competed in basketball on Saturday.

“It’s a place where they belong, where they’re not judged,” she said. “It gives them a chance to build real friendships.”
