Music business executive Londyn McGrew answers the question what is pure Hip Hop. The original post appeared on Facebook and is used with permission. To maintain the authenticity and integrity of Londyn's response, very little editing was done. With that being said you may find a few spelling or grammatical errors. Remember to focus on the content of what Londyn has presented as that's the essence and what is most significant.

It’s all hip hop in a sense because it all derived from the same place…It has just evolved into different forms, sounds and styles from its original origin. I look at hip hop music like humans.

Humans do not look the same as they used to 20, 30, 50, 70, 100 or 200 years ago. Human’s features have changed, language has changed, fashion has changed and the subject matters we talk about have changed. But what has not changed about humans is that we are flesh and blood humans that bleed the same blood. That’s how I look at it when it comes to the hip hop music. Underneath all the different styles of hip hop and rap music (if you want to separate the two), it all birthed from the same place.

Some people talk about conscious stuff, some talk about the streets, some talk about girls, some talk about political and social issues and some talk about partying. Those kats back in our day like Eric B & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS 1, Special Ed, African Bambada, UTFO, Sugar Hill Gang, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Cool Mo Dee, Heavy D and the countless other talked about the same stuff. It’s just a little more extreme now and the music has crossed over, in which the most of the old school hip hop artist did not have the opportunity to do except for Run DMC. Run DMC was hip hop that crossed over but just because it crossed over did not make it less hip hop. That took hip hop/rap music into the pop world thus changing the whole hip hop industry.

That’s just my opinion.

Cappriccieo Scates, Senior Director of Writer and Publisher Relations at SESAC has been a staple in the Atlanta Music Industry for several years. He started Tempo Tuesday, had an open door policy and was always welcoming songwriters and music producers to ask questions about the music business in general and the publishing industry in particular.

He was a great contributor to the Atlanta Music Scene and inadvertently made other music industry executives step their business up. Join Georgia's best choirs, the Metro Atlanta American Heart Association, UnitedHealthcare, Federal Home Loan Bank, and the Gospel Music Workshop in fighting heart disease and stroke at the inaugural Atlanta Most Powerful Voices Choir Competition. Participating choirs throughout the state will compete for the title of Most Powerful Voices Champion, while raising awareness about heart disease and stroke in their congregations and communities.

To enter the competition, choirs must fill out an entry application and submit a video of a performance. A selection committee will choose 15 choirs to compete on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 during the live competition at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church in front of a live audience, and a panel of local celebrity and expert judges. Atlanta's first place winner will receive $1500. Second place will receive $1000 and third place will receive $700.

JAWAR: DJ Crazy, what are some of the best
ways for indie artist to professionally approach
you about listening and possibly playing their
song?

DJ Crazy Dave McMillan: Making post, asking
people who read any of the stream to send me
stuff they are proud of. If want me to listen to your
music ask me personally. If you send mass promo
it goes into the pile of 1000's vs the other music
I want to get to.

If you're asking me some of the best ways to get
out there in general...

Get as many free accounts on music sites as you
can. If have the money pay for SoundCloud. Make
sure you read the terms of [service] and use; you
don't want those sites owning rights to your music.

Once you have content [music] online, use Google+
and FaceBook with one's own friends to share your
music. Stuff people like will get shared without you
doing a thing (viral) for it.

Personally, I've made two Google+ accounts, one
for personal and one for public use. I still act like
a human on both. I still make a point to listen and
share other peoples work when it's good on my
public accounts. I hope others will do the same.

One thing I mean about being human on your public
feed is to use it in the same way you do with your
private feed. You'll want to censor what you say a bit
and no drama. :-)

Youtube is your friend; personally I find a lot of music
through it. Most of the tracks I find don't have a good
music video and without a video I have less reason to
share it with friends. If your song has a video I give it all
my attention rather than being in the background while
I'm doing other stuff.

This summer I walked pass some young men handing
out their CD by donation. In the few minutes I talked
with them, they got 10 CD's out for a profit. (50cents a
press, they took in $2-$10 each).

You can take this one step farther, get some hot chicks
to go in to the clubs and hand the DJ's a CD and kiss.

Have you seen how many companies claim ownership to one music release... it seems like it's at least 7 companies. How can they make a profit when selling a single download for .99cents. Don't forget iTunes and Uncle Sam are their partners too.

In many cases now you're talking about 9 or so entities attempting to eat off of a .99cent download... no, wonder the record business continues to be an outdated business model whose time is over.

Publishing vs. Publicity: What's The Difference?

Atlanta, GA - Learn the differences between publishing and publicity at the music workshop series on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Wooeb from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The "Publishing vs. Publicity" workshop will provide insider knowledge on the most significant aspects of the music business. Individuals will learn about song pitching, copyright registrations and collecting royalties on their musical works. Attendees will also have the opportunity to direct their questions face-to-face with music professional and the workshop's creator, Peniece Le Gall, who has worked for all three PRO's over the last decade.

"I created this workshop to enlighten individuals who are interested in pursuing a professional career in music that there is a business side that comes along with making music and publishing is the vital aspect of longevity in the industry," says Le Gall. "It's all about being in the room with the movers and shakers that can make things happen and this workshop offers that opportunity," adds Cappriccieo Scates, Associate Director of SESAC's Writer/Publisher Relations department.
