Unless, of course, it involves a delicious three-course meal prepared over the course of one frantic hour.

“Top Chef” — the Bravo reality show that puts chefs through amusing paces and tests of culinary prowess — announced Wednesday that the upcoming season will take place in Las Vegas. Not only that, but the Atlanta culinary world is well represented in the cast.

Of the 17 ” ‘chef’testants,” three helm the kitchens at well-regarded Atlanta restaurants. Kevin Gillespie, 26, is chef and partner at Woodfire Grill on Cheshire Bridge Road. Eli Kirshtein, 25, runs Eno Restaurant and Wine Bar in Midtown. Hector Santiago, 40, is the chef-owner of Pura Vida Tapas and Bar in Poncey-Highland.

Santiago is the most established. Atlanta Journal-Constitution dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman chose Pura Vida as restaurant of the year in 2005. Santiago describes his cooking as “cocina de autor,” a term the Spanish use for a style that emphasizes personality and creativity.

Gillespie took over the kitchen at Woodfire Grill last year from its founder, Michael Touhy. Gillespie calls his cooking “simple and ingredient- driven, but also a little surprising.”

Kirshtein might have the best chance. Before taking over the kitchen at Eno, he was an aide to Richard Blais, the Atlanta chef who made it to the finals in Season 4. He calls his cooking “techno-organic.” Hardy Wallace, publisher of the Dirty South Wine blog, says Kirshtein “produces some of the best food I’ve had in Atlanta.”

“Top Chef: Las Vegas” will premiere at 9 p.m. Aug. 26.

Leading Economic Index up in May for second consecutive month

A closely watched economic index in May
showed the largest jump in more than five years,
a promising sign that the worst of the recession may be over.

The Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index
for the U.S. increased by 1.2 percent in May, following
a 1.1 percent increase in April and a 0.3 percent decline in March.

The LEI projects economic activity for the next three to six months.

Ken Goldstein, an economist at the New York-based research group,
said confidence in the economy is beginning to improve.

“Confidence is rebuilding, and financial market volatility is abating,” he said.

“Even the housing market appears to be stabilizing.
If these trends continue, expect a slow recovery
beginning before the end of the year. However,
employment will take longer to turn around.”

In addition to gains in the LEI for the second consecutive month,
the strengths among its components continued to exceed the weaknesses this month.

Vendor performance, interest rate spread, real money supply,
stock prices, consumer expectations and building permits
contributed positively to the index, more than offsetting
the negative figures in weekly hours and initial unemployment claims.

The index rose by 1.2 percent (a 2.4 percent annual rate)
between November 2008 and May 2009, the first time
the index has been positive for a six-month period since April 2007.

The strengths among the leading indicators
became balanced with the weaknesses during this period.

If you have beeen watching and thinking about buying a restaurant,
