Irishtown Nature Park Event & CITO

On July 12th I was contacted by the city of Moncton to help them understand Geocaching and how it was being done in Irishtown Nature Park. I met with Charles Landry and Heather Hawker to see what caches were there and how we could improve the caching experience in the park. The City of Moncton had previously done an environmental study to learn what was in the park, which is part of the Fundy Biosphere, a UNESCO world heritage site. They discovered some plant an animal life that they wanted to protect and preserve therefore they developed a Geocaching Policy for the area. This meant that some of the existing caches should be removed, replaced or moved. They also wanted to have some new caches placed for an event day. That is where I came in. I walked the Park with Charles to determine where they would like to have the new ones placed, they choose areas where they wanted to attract people. I, along with help from cachers in the Moncton area for the wording and translation, came up with 4 caches that would be part of a passport/punch system similar to the National Parks. I also planned for a regular event and a CITO to attract cachers and kick it off. In total, eight different caches were developed for the day; regular, multi, puzzle, letterbox, WherIGo, an Earthcache and the 2 types of Events.

The weather did not cooperate but nine brave geocachers braved the rain to clean up the trails around Bayers Lake on June 6th in Halifax , Nova Scotia.

This event was sponsored by Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association and Environment Canada as a project to celebrate Canadian Environment Week. Gloves and garbage bags were passed out to the CITO participants.

The event weekend started at the Cheticamp visitor centre where 20 geocachers, new & experienced stopped by for a quick introduction to geocaching and hiking in the highlands presentation.

The group, along with 30 other geocachers assembled at the front of the visitor centre and proceeded to hike up the most difficult trail of the day - The Acadian. This was a two hour trek up the mountain for a gorgeous view. At the summit, geocachers found the first of five newly published geocaches within the park borders. Only four more to log before getting their hands on the limited edition geocoin.

Since all the geocaches were along the Cabot Trail, there were many opportunities for group hikes with some familiar faces. Participants included geocachers from Halifax, Annapolis Valley, Pictou County and of course from Cape Breton.

Geocachers hiked anywhere between 17 ad 21 kms and travelled from Cheticamp to Ingonish along the Cabot Trail. Many of the trails were loops and offered many a chance to explore trails within the park and learn more about the various ecosystems.

The conclusion of the event was at the Atlantic Restaurant on the Keltic Lodge grounds. Geocachers enjoyed a buffet where they were treated to a very healthy menu and dessert tray. Prizes were handed out to many in attendance.

Événement Parc National Fundy National Park Event

2009 Event Details

The second geocaching event in Fundy National Park gathered a record 165 (logbook signed) geocachers, making it the largest geocaching event in New Brunswick to date. With triple the expected numbers, the event organizers were partnered with the perfect weather in recent memory for opening weekend in Fundy National Park.

The total distance to complete the 2009 series of geocaches was approximately 10km, taking up to 4 hours to complete. About 10% of the total participants were able to log all 5 during the event. A number of geocachers also took the opportunity to log some of the 2008 geocaches as there were still some 2008 geocoins available. Speaking of geocoins, the new 2009 geocoin was a trackable wood coin, etched locally. The 2009 geocoin was a 100% locally produced product better representing the National Park and the EcoIntegrity project better.

While event organizers only planned on 60 participants, they were able to accommodate the large influx of geocachers. However the event was not 100% perfect as those who completed all 5 geocaches were not able to get their geocoin immediately since they were required to go to the visitor centre to get the geocoin, rather than at the event base. The visitor centre was closed by the time most got back from the trail. This was an unfortunate bit of planning that was not expected, so the event organizers took the completed 2009 passports and contact information where the geocoins would be mailed in order for them in order to resolve the matter.

This along with other feedback is already being considered for next year's event.

Geocaches Related to this partnership between ACGA and Fundy Naitonal Park are (to be published on the 16th):

Leave it to Beaver

Looney Tunes

Under Cover

The Forest

The Eel Deal

Please mark your attendance on Geocaching.com event listing page to assist planners.

About the Event

Saturday May 16th 2009, from 12:00-5pm.

Note that park entry fees are in effect since the event will be inside the park.
