Coast Guard Auxiliary to conduct free vessel safety checks

Traffic pattern change at Big Ditch Creek bridge

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP – The state Department of Transportation has changed the traffic pattern on Route 322 (Black Horse Pike) as bridge reconstruction operations enter the next stage over the Big Ditch Creek in Hamilton Township.

DOT’s contractor, Agate Construction, set up the new construction zone on the westbound side of the bridge on Thursday, May 24. To accommodate that work, DOT will shift two-way traffic onto the newly rebuilt eastbound portion of the bridge and restore a second westbound lane.

As a result, Mazetis, who is known as the township’s unofficial historian, was recently named the Cologne Grange Volunteer of the Year in praise of her tireless volunteering efforts.

Snowflakes bring flag to students

MARGATE - Sometimes snowflakes are a welcome sight, especially in Afghanistan.

A snowstorm arrived there thanks to the artistic efforts of first grade students at the WilliamH.RossElementary School.

First grade students, Lily and T.J. Finkenauer have an uncle they are very proud of: Capt. Peter Roberts. They came up with the idea of “Snowflakes for Solders” after seeing a picture of their Uncle Peter, smiling during an unusual snow shower while he was stationed in Afghanistan.

PLEASANTVILLE – More than 75 people showed up to help clean up the trash during the Pleasantville Clean up Day, sponsored by Sponsored by the STEP UP program. The day was also made possible by partnering with the Atlantic County Utility Authority, Shoprite, YouthBuild, Covenant House and the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City. Mayor Jesse Tweedle stopped by to thank the volunteers for their time. One volunteer, Kayel Cotto, 19, of Somers Point said he felt it was important to take action. “That’s what YouthBuild is all about. We need to walk the talk. If some of these young guys see an older guy picking up trash, they may think, ‘it’s cool if I do it too,’” he said.

EMTs aid police AED program

GALLOWAY – A campaign to raise $12,500 for 10 new automated external defibrillators for the Police Department was kicked off at the Tuesday, May 22 Township Council meeting.

Chipping in $1,250 to buy the first AED was the Galloway Township Ambulance Squad.

Chestnut Neck observance

The Daughters of the American Revolution General Lafayette Chapter will hold a Memorial Day observance 10:30-11:15 a.m. Saturday, May 26 at the ChestnutNeckBattleMonument on Route 9 in GallowayTownship. There will be a presentation of a wreath by the family of the late Edythe Aldridge. Aldridge who died in March at age 89 was a longtime DAR member who annually presented the Memorial Day wreath. Boy Scout Troop 254 will present a flag folding ceremony. Public, family-appropriate event.
