UFC 150 Preview

UFC 150 is upon us featuring the rematch of former champion Frankie Edgar against the man that took his Lightweight Title, Benson Henderson. The card also features the following fights, previewed to help your UFC betting

Frankie Edgar vs Benson Henderson
Frankie Edgar enters his 3rd rematch in 6 fights as he tries to take his belt back. Edgar did well in the first fight against Henderson and while very close I personally thought he did enough to win. Hendersons upkick was no doubt a turning point in that fight and should Edgar be able to avoid something like that in the rematch, I expect him to push a faster pace and land more shots and takedowns on his way to a decision. Henderson though is very tough and did very well in the last fight. He’s also always dangerous with his dynamic strikes that can come out of nowhere as well as his guillotine so while I’m giving a slight edge to Edgar, don’t blink. Overall I expect the fight to play out much like the first but with Edgar having a bigger lead in strikes and landing key takedowns to seal the rounds.

Donald Cerrone vs. Melvin Guillard
Former teammates will collide in a matchup that will give the main event a run for its money in contending for Fight of the Night. Both are excellent strikers but with diverging styles. Cerrone is a solid Muay Thai fighter with hard kicks that go high and low and long straight punches. Guillard on the other hand is incredibly explosive with extremely fast and powerful hands. Range will be key here and if Cerrone can use his kicks and keep his punches long, he should be able to control the action on the feet. While Cerrone has vastly improved his wrestling over the past few years, Guillard is the more experienced wrestler and the stronger fighter. Once the fight hits the mat however, Cerrones Jiu Jitsu will cause problems for Guillard as Cerrone has 13 submission wins to his name while Guillard has 9 out of his 10 losses coming by submission. Look for Cerrone to control the action on the feet before the fight hits the mat one way or another and locks in a choke in the second round.

Jake Shields vs. Ed Herman
Jake Shields returns to Middleweight where he owned the Strikeforce Championship as well as defeated current Lightheavyweight #1 contender Dan Henderson. While looking a bit flat at welterweight, Shields has said that the weight cut is hard on him and he feels much better at middleweight. That will be tested against the resurgent Ed Herman on Saturday. After suffering a knee injury in 2009, Herman has come back and rattled off 3 wins in a row and all by either TKO or submission. Both considered wrestlers, Shields definitely has the more developer Jiu Jitsu game though Herman has come a long way in his submissions lately. On the feet, neither would be called a striker but Herman has the smoother stand up of the two and has shown power in the past. Assuming Shields conditioning is where it should be, I’d look for Shields to hit single leg takedowns and dominate position on the ground for 3 rounds. If Shields tires however and comes up short on those takedown attempts, Herman will make him pay with punches and get the TKO in the third.

Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway
TUF Veteran Justin Lawrence makes his first Pay Per View appearance at just 4-0. While his first 3 opponents were only a combined 5-5, Lawrence looked impressive on The Ultimate Fighter knocking out the then 12-3 Cristiano Marcello. While he lost to eventual winner Michael Chiesa, he rebounded on the finale show with a KO of then 7-1 John Cofer. He faces a fair match-up against 5-1 Max Holloway. Both good strikers, this fight will be played out with kicks and punches. Holloway has better combinations and works the body more and I am always appreciative when a striker works the body. Lawrence is hungry though and with him training at Black House I’m expecting us to see technical improvements to compliment his natural power and get the KO within 3.
