<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Translation errors in fashion and cosmetics are not just awkward, they&#8217;re downright expensive. A product description that reads flat, or worse, says something unintended, can quietly erode the trust a brand has spent years building.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The scenarios play out more often than you might think. A luxury brand expands into a new market with <a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/sector/materials-and-packaging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">packaging copy</a> that is technically correct but <em>sounds</em> off. Before you know it, the warmth and aspiration that made the product desirable at home simply do not come across. A cosmetics company relies on machine translation for its e-commerce listings and ends up with product names that sound clinical rather than enticing. A fashion retailer&#8217;s campaign tagline gets translated word-for-word and loses all its wit in the process.</p>

They don&#8217;t know that a phrase that works beautifully in English might land awkwardly, or even offensively, in another language. And they certainly can&#8217;t replicate the voice and personality your organisation has worked hard to build.</p>

The content is largely accurate, but the tone is off. Where the English original sounds urgent and compelling, the translated versions read as flat and overly literal. Reviewers reading in French or German don&#8217;t get the same sense of momentum. The application doesn&#8217;t make the shortlist.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a scenario that plays out more often than organisations realise, and the frustrating part is that it&#8217;s entirely avoidable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At its core, terminology management relies on two tools working together.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first is a <strong><a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/client-checklists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glossary</a></strong> (also called a <em>termbase</em> or <em>project dictionary</em>): a client-approved list of preferred terms and their translations across target languages. This covers product names, dosage forms, regulatory language, and much more. It&#8217;s a tool to help an organisation use industry-specific terminology consistently across all documents.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second is <strong>translation memory (TM)</strong>: a database that stores previously translated segments and surfaces them when similar content appears again. If a sentence has already been translated and approved, the TM makes sure it&#8217;s rendered the same way the next time it appears, regardless of which translator is working on the project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are assets that belong to the client and grow more valuable with every project.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-mislabelled-dosage"><strong>The Mislabelled Dosage</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A manufacturer has a new paediatric formulation translated into three European languages ahead of launch. The translator, working without a client-approved glossary, uses the term &#8220;daily dose&#8221; for the instruction. In one of the target languages, that phrase is more commonly understood as &#8220;per administration.&#8221; The packaging clears internal review and goes to print.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The error isn&#8217;t discovered until a pharmacist raises a query.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two things were missing here:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>A <a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/blog/pharma-translations-regulatory-submissions/#:~:text=Best%20Practices%20for%20Streamlining%20Multilingual%20Regulatory%20Submissions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">project-specific glossary</a> &#8211; a document that captures approved terminology so the same translation decisions are made consistently, regardless of who&#8217;s doing the work or when.</li>



<li>A <a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/services/back-translation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">back-translation</a> step &#8211; having the completed translation rendered back into the source language by an independent linguist. This is done specifically to catch ambiguities that look fine on the surface but carry a different meaning in context.</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For any information on a physical product (especially anything dosage-related), these steps are an expected baseline.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-rejected-regulatory-submission"><strong>The Rejected Regulatory Submission</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A contract research organisation (CRO) submits translated patient-facing documents to a national authority referencing a Phase III trial application. The authority flags inconsistencies in the rendering of <em>adverse event terminology</em> across the informed consent form and the patient diary. The submission is returned for revision, pushing the trial start date back by six weeks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this instance, two different translators worked on the documents, using different reference materials, with no shared translation memory.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Translation <a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/blog/translation-project-timelines/#:~:text=Quality%20Level%20Requirements" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory tools</a> solve this problem directly. Once a term or phrase has been approved, it&#8217;s stored and applied consistently across every document in the project. It&#8217;s also stored for every future project for that client. The result is a body of work that reads as though it came from a single, well-briefed source, because in effect, it did.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is one of the reasons that partnering with an ISO 17100 certified translation agency matters in practice, rather than just on paper. The standard requires these processes to be in place and audited, and not just a “to-do” item on a whiteboard.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-localisation-blunder"><strong>The Localisation Blunder</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next, we see a pharmaceutical company launching a patient support campaign across four global markets. The central message reassures patients that the treatment &#8220;works quietly in the background.&#8221; In one target language, that phrase carried a connotation of <em>secretive or undisclosed</em>, almost the opposite of the intended reassurance. The local marketing team flags it after launch.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The translation was linguistically accurate. The problem was that it was <em>only</em> linguistically accurate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/blog/modern-pharma-localisation-solutions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Localisation</a> goes further than translation. For patient communications and marketing materials, in-country review by a native-speaking translator with genuine cultural fluency is priceless. It’s what fills the gap between what something technically means and what it actually communicates to a reader in that market.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Language proficiency and cultural insight are related, but they&#8217;re not the same thing. It’s this kind of scenario that shows exactly where that distinction shows up.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The three scenarios above look different on the surface, but they share a common underlying thread: no standardised reference materials, quality checkpoints, or localisation. Every project was either winging it, starting from scratch, or poorly considered, with no shared materials or managed processes in place.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You recognise the ISO logos and you know they’re what you’re looking for. A quiet sense of reassurance settles in because you also know they stand for something good.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But what if someone asked you right now what those certifications <em>actually</em> guarantee about the translation work you&#8217;ll receive? Would you know what to tell them? If your answer is &#8220;hmmm, not entirely,&#8221; you&#8217;re in the right place.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those logos aren’t just decorative. They’ll tell you a great deal about how an agency operates and how its translators are vetted. Arguably more important, they explain what happens when something goes wrong.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iso-17100-the-standard-built-specifically-for-translation">ISO 17100: The Standard Built Specifically for Translation</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unlike most <a href="https://www.atlas-translations.co.uk/quality-standards/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quality standards</a>, which apply broadly across different business types, ISO 17100 was designed from the ground up for translation services. That makes it rather important if you’re procuring professional translation for anything that actually matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So what does it cover? In short, everything that shapes the quality of the translated output. Translator qualifications are a key part of it because agencies certified to ISO 17100 must demonstrate that their linguists meet defined competency requirements. This could be through formal qualifications, documented experience, or both. It’s not enough to simply claim your translators are good; you have to be able to prove it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The standard also governs the revision process. Every translation completed under ISO 17100 must be reviewed by a second linguist, a qualified reviser, who checks the work against the source document. It’s a built-in quality control step that prevents errors from slipping through unchecked. Project management and client communication workflows are covered, too, so you can expect clear processes rather than crossed wires.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Crucially, ISO 17100 certification isn’t self-awarded. It requires an external audit, conducted annually, by an accredited body. That independent verification is what gives the standard its credibility. When a professional translation agency is certified to ISO 17100, you’re not just taking their word for it.</p>

Organisations like the <a href="https://pifonline.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Patient Information Forum (PIF)</a> are raising concerns about the quality of content available from sources that patients and healthcare professionals have long trusted. At the same time, AI-generated search overviews are presenting health summaries with an enviable air of authority. Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t always reflect the accuracy of the referenced information. Experts, including patient information specialists, have called for clearer disclaimers and greater transparency around how this content is generated and verified.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-reliable-sources-disappear-the-language-gap-widens">When Reliable Sources Disappear, the Language Gap Widens</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People who access health information in languages other than English already have fewer resources. Multilingual health information, when it exists at all, is often produced in smaller quantities, updated less frequently, and distributed through fewer channels. When authoritative English-language content is reduced in quality or availability, translated versions are rarely prioritised for correction or replacement.</p>
