At one time I was an avid collector of comics. I even clipped my favourites from the newspaper, scotch taped them on to construction paper and stored them in binders (which I still have). At some point I stopped reading the comics page. I think Dilbert “jumped the shark” when Scott Adams quit his day job, although every once in a while one of his strips still makes me chuckle.

I have a small collection of more obscure stuff. A crowd favourite is a little book of one panel cartoons called “Unpleasant Ways to Die” that might amuse you. Sadly, most of my books are packed away in boxes while I wait for the contractor to finish the built-ins in my apartment. It’s been a fourteen month project so far. I’ve grown accustomed to being perpetually annoyed.

Merry Christmas and it’s the end of season 3. (and my 3rd Xmas podcasting)

It’s not a regular episode this week. As a treat I have pieced together the Christmas audio letters my family and friends have sent me. Also, because Mr. Pants mooned a bus load of Nuns I have to do some community service. (Note, you’re apparently responsible for your clowns behavior.) I have included some messages home from our troops battling the robots.

Podcasting is pretty simple. You create a audio or video file, host it on the internet and use a piece of code call an RSS feed to point to it so that a Podcatcher like itunes can find it and automatically download it.

On November 3 you can find out just how easy it is and why you should be Podcasting. Chinook Learning Service is offering a “Spectacular Saturday” class called “Podcasting Made Easy“. The class will cover everything you need to know to start feeding your creative works to the world. From recording to hosting to blogging and RSS as well as dealing with aggregators like itunes and directories like Canada Podcasts and podCALGARY.

The two best things about this are, 1) it’s taught by me, Daryl Cognito and 2) it’s only 69 bucks.

Finding Canada

Not surprising, my Canada is made up of the pop culture of CBC and CTV from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. I grew up without cable TV. Not because I am too old, or that my parents we poor, but because they had different priorities. They are now enjoying a comfortable and exciting retirement, while all I have is memories of a cold and empty childhood.

So, observations, what did I discover on my first trip to central canada. Well Central Canadians are not that much different than Calgarians, now that could be because most Calgarians are from Toronto. Ottawa is a beautiful place, so is kingston. However, it is really different in Central Canada. Most notable is the amount of history. Central Canada is a hell of a lot older that Alberta. Not the people, the buildings. This is because just like Cleveland is the birthplace of civilization, Central Canada is the birthplace of Canada. It was explained to me that the amazing Canal system in and around Ottawa was a result of the English deciding that we needed a safer route for transporting goods. Not only is Calgary younger than pretty much anywhere in Ontario, but we are also developmentally delayed. What I mean is that, and I have touched on this before, Calgary is the junior high students of Canada, we haven’t even hit puberty. The city did not even start to grow until the 50s. We were a small city on a river until after the 2and world war. There were a few buildings hotels and such, but no row house or really much to preserve. Note, I am not trying to devalue that pre 50s history, because it is there and what is left is worth preserving, but it is not on the same level, I mean an old RCMP fort, is cool, but it doesn’t hold a candle to a canal system built for national security.

As I said my pop culture memories are from the mid 70s through the mid 80s, and they are also from the CBC and CTV which came from Central Canada. My friends have memories of Saturday night live and school house rock. I have memories of Peter puck and Terry David Muligan. Something were a bit different out west. For example, do you remember that clown, that hobo clown that would show up on children’s daytime programing. I finally had that mystery solved. I could never figure out his point. Turns out, he was teaching french. You see, in alberta the just dubbed in english. Remember, Alberta was the province with a picture of Rene Levesque with a big X on it at the border in the 70s.

Hey, yea, yea it’s coming hold your horses. I have a quick note about the band that provides the theme and bumper music for Atomic Suburbia. Lejeune is having a CD release party on May the 12th.

I write today to share exciting news of a musical nature. My pop/rock outfit Lejeune has just put out a new record called For Club and Country , and in celebration of such we are hosting a CD Release show tomorrow (Sat 5/12) evening at Arlington, VA’s intimate and excellent Iota Club and Cafe. The show—which kicks off at 9pm with one of our favorite DC acts The Antiques—affords us the opportunity to share our life’s work for the past year and a half. While this is an 11th hour notice, if you’re able and inclined, it would be great to see you there.

However, should distance and/or prior engagements preclude you from attending, I invite you to listen to the digital fruits of our collective labor at the following web outlets:
