flexible positioning

Nope not talking yoga here. Been thinking about why webpages in particular aren’t flexible or intelligent enough to change layout depending on how the user configures their browser.
For example say I view a site on an iPhone in vertical mode, horizontal navigation might be better than vertical (in a column) but what if I switch to landscape mode and thus have a widescreen viewport wouldn’t a vertical column containing my navigation be better? (unless theres so much that it would be chopped off then it needs to be the other way round).
Which would be better…

heres a normal site viewed on a 4:3 ratio monitor, or the browser has been sized to 4:3

the layout has been designed for this kind of ratio and the proportions are fine.

Here’s how the layout looks when the user changes the ratio

as you can see it is now out of proportion

ideally a better layout could look like this

Anyway I thought I’d have a play to see what inherant problems there might be with a layout that changes on the fly when you change your viewport

UPDATE : found some weirdy stuff going and the viewport wasn’t right so now theres a new version, and it working on an iPhone

In Singapore with our banking client operating on 2×2 day conferences for 7 days.

Kalle got the easy job, 2 day show, 20 slides in total, 1 video, no pressure, 10am get in… WTF! Yet he still made life hard for himself by not sleeping at all before the last show (think he’s jetting around the planet is catching up with him)

So Kalle got the nice days, me I get 6AM start – 2AM finish, loads of presentations, loads of video! grrrrr damn short straw
I also apparently don’t need real air did the maths: 10080 minutes of non-un-conditioned air.

You should see what happened to Eaun when he stepped out of the hotel we think he might have a broken nose.

Well Jo and I saw Lost And Found at a special preview last night at the Renoir Cinema in London. In a word, Fantastic!

Studio AKA is (the studio behind the Lloyds TV commercials) animated creation works on every level. The Direction by Phillip Hunt is excellent, the music is really good (Max Richter). There were even a few tears :D you know who!
As far as I know it will be screened on Channel Four, Christmas Eve at 2:30 and again on Boxing Day at 12:30 so no reason to miss it
