Rafael Nadal training again after knee injury layoff

Rafael Nadal is training for the first time since being sidelined by a knee injury.

Nadal has been out of action with tendinitis in his right knee since losing to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the French Open, where the Spaniard had been the four-time defending champion.

Nadal is hoping to resume playing at next month’s Montreal Masters. He was was unable to defend his Wimbledon title, and Roger Federer won his record 15th Grand Slam trophy and retook the No. 1 ranking.

ANZ Signs On As Oz Open Sponsor

Australian bank ANZ has signed a three-year sponsor contract to serve as an Australian Open associate sponsor.
The agreement begins with the 2010 Australian Open, set for January 18-31, 2010.

Soderling defeats Monaco to win Swedish Open

Robin Soderling beat Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-6 (4) to win the Swedish Open on Sunday for his fourth ATP Tour title and first on clay.

The second-seeded Soderling became the first Swedish winner of the tournament since 2000 when his coach, Magnus Norman, won the title.

“I’m so happy, I wouldn’t trade this victory for a Grand Slam,” Soderling said.

This was his third ATP final on home soil. He lost both previous—on indoor hard court to Mardy Fish in the 2003 Stockholm Open and last year to David Nalbandian in the same tournament.

Soderling did not drop a set in his four matches at Bastad.

He broke for a 1-0 lead in the second set and had a break point for 4-1. But he let Monaco back in the match when his serve deserted him in the eighth game. Monaco broke back to 4-4 after Soderling hit a backhand wide.

“He started playing well in the second set,” Soderling said. “I got nervous. I had a break point to 4-1, but the ball hit the top of the net. That was the match I thought. I got tense and he started playing better and better.”

Leading 5-4, the unseeded Argentine reached set point when Soderling fell behind 30-40. But the Swede managed to hold his serve after hitting a forehand winner in the corner.

Soderling took command early in the tiebreaker and never trailed. He moved to 6-2 and won it on his third match point when Monaco netted a return.

Soderling, this year’s surprising French Open finalist, broke Monaco in the second game of the opening set when the Argentine netted a forehand. The Swede was never challenged when serving the rest of the way, closing out the set with a love game.

Monaco eliminated two seeded players—No. 1 Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Tommy Robredo in the semifinals—en route to the title match.

Ranked 61st, Monaco was the first Argentine to reach the Swedish Open final since Mariano Zabaleta, who won back-to back titles in 2003-04.

Ram backs up first title with opening win at Indianapolis Tennis Championships

Rajeev Ram backed up the career-first title he won a week ago at Newport with a 6-3, 7-5 first-round victory over Devin Britton at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.

Ram claimed the Newport crown in a shock ending to an event where he only entered the main draw after Mardy Fish withdrew to make an emergency appearance for the US Davis Cup team in Croatia.

Rajeev began well at his home event, which he has played on six previous occasions, never moving past the third round (2005).

Ram now awaits the winner of the first round match between Sam Querrey and Arnaud Clement.

Ram has found his self-confidence boosted by his showing in Newport and hopes to carry the momentum forward as he begins his summer cement season in the run-up to the US Open.

"I played well but I'm really not surprised. This form only shows the results of my hard work over the past few seasons," said the journeyman who played only one more ATP-level match last year after Indy last July. He started 2009 with a first-round loss to Ivo Karlovic in Chennai, India.

Ram was beaten in the first round at Wimbledon by German Philipp Petzschner, with Chennai, Wimbledon and Newport his only elite-level events so far in this year.

Ram broke the inexperienced Britton three times to take victory in just over an hour and a quarter, under cloudy skies with a threat of rain.

Russian Dmitry Tursunov, the 2007 champion and losing finalist a year ago to Frenchman Gilles Simon, takes the top seeding ahead ahead of Israeli Davis Cup standout from last weekend's upset of Russia, Dudi Sela.

Chardy wins Mercedes Cup Title in Stuttgart

Jeremy Chardy of France won his first career ATP Tour title on Sunday, beating Victor Hanescu of Romania 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Mercedes Cup final.

After clinching the second set following a break of serve, Chardy raced to a 4-0 lead in the third.

But Hanescu, who was seeded fourth, won the next three games and held two break points to even the score. Chardy saved them, held serve and then served out the match at love.

“It was very difficult,” Chardy said. “I was very nervous at the start and felt the pressure in the third.”

Chardy swigged from a bottle of champagne at the victory ceremony and then took a brief spin behind the wheel of a luxury car donated to the winner by the title sponsor.

It was Chardy’s second career final. He finished as runner-up in Johannesburg in February.

“He absolutely deserved to win, he played very well,” Hanescu said.

The 22-year-old Frenchman entered the tournament ranked No. 43, but will move up to somewhere around No. 35 when the new rankings come out Monday.

Hanescu beat Chardy in the quarterfinals of the Gstaad, Switzerland, tournament when he won his only title to date last year, but lost to the Frenchman in the first round of the Indian Wells Masters this year.

Andy Roddick withdraws from Indianapolis with hip injury

Andy Roddick has withdrawn from the Indianapolis Tennis Championships next week, citing a right hip flexor injury.

That’s the same injury that prompted Roddick to pull out of the U.S. Davis Cup team’s quarterfinal at Croatia last week.

Tournament director Kevin Martin says he’s disappointed but he understands Roddick’s decision to put his health first.

Martin says he’s working to secure a commitment from James Blake, who’s ranked No. 17 in the world, to take the final wild card before the draw is released.

Tommy Robredo cruises through to semi-final clash with Monaco

Tommy Robredo moved towards a third Swedish Open title on Friday by disposing of Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-4 6-0 to reach the semi-finals.

The Spaniard, who won his first title on the Swedish clay in 2006, will now face Juan Monaco after Spanish top seed Fernando Verdasco retired against the Argentine at 6-1 3-1 down. The world number nine quit after struggling with a calf injury.

“I pulled (the calf muscle) in the first game of the match and it was really hard to play after that,” said Verdasco who was dominated by Monaco in the baseline rallies.

“The injury affected my serve and in the end I was forced to give up… (But) Monaco handled the situation very well and made it even harder for me. He deserves his semi-final place.”

Robredo took a 3-0 lead, having broken Gabashvili’s opening service game, and never looked back. The Russian fought bravely to get back into the set but failed and then ran out of steam.

The other semi-final will be an all-Swedish affair.

French Open finalist Robin Soderling continued his good run of form by beating claycourter Nicolas Almagro 7-5 6-3 and will now face wild card Andreas Vinciguerra who beat Austrian fourth seed Juergen Melzer 2-6 6-4 6-3.

The 460th ranked Vinciguerra, a finalist here in 1999 and 2000, has struggled for years with injuries and it will be his first semi-final appearance in eight years.

McEnroe’s World TeamTennis coach suspended, fined

World TeamTennis suspended and fined New York Sportimes coach Chuck Adams on Friday after his team—which features John McEnroe—and the Washington Kastles got into heated arguments over players getting hit by shots.

The league barred Adams from leading New York against visiting Kansas City on Friday night for “violating the World TeamTennis Coaches’ Code of Conduct.”

Adams went onto Washington’s side of the court to confront a Kastles player Thursday.

The league called this “the first punishment” for what happened between New York and Washington on Thursday. WTT said it “continues to investigate the incident to determine if there will be any additional punishments issued.”

During the men’s doubles match, a shot by Washington’s Leander Paes hit New York’s Robert Kendrick, prompting Adams and McEnroe to yell at Paes, the WTT said. The Sportimes were issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct by the chair umpire because Adams and McEnroe entered the opponent’s side of the court.

Four points later, Kendrick swatted a serve that hit Paes.

According to the league, that prompted reactions from Kastles players Olga Puchkova and Rennae Stubbs, who were on the bench watching from the sideline. Puchkova was issued a code violation warning for yelling at Kendrick. The WTT said Stubbs then protested that ruling by the chair umpire, drawing a code violation herself for abuse of officials, which cost the Kastles a point in the match-deciding tiebreaker in men’s doubles.

The Sportimes won that match and beat the Kastles overall.

Kiefer eases into Stuttgart semi-final against Chardy

Kiefer eases into Stuttgart semi-final against Chardy

Nicolas Kiefer crushed Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot 6-2 6-1 in Stuttgart on Saturday to set up a semi-final clash with Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who ousted Germany’s Mischa Zverev 7-6 6-1.

Kiefer, who has not won a singles title in nine years, and Chardy are set to play their semi-final later on Saturday after heavy rain forced the postponement of their quarter-finals on Friday.

Kiefer, 32, had little trouble against world number 127 Kubot, who stunned fifth seed Philipp Kohschreiber in the previous round, grabbing the first set after 33 minutes.

Rain interrupted play after the first game in the second set but the 40-minute break did not distract the world number 40.

Kiefer broke the Pole twice to power to a 5-0 lead, serving out the match after 63 minutes to reach his first semi-final of the season.

World number 43 Chardy, 22, was made to work hard against left-hander Zverev only in the first set, clinching two quick breaks in the second to ease past the world number 45.

Victor Hanescu, the only seed left in the draw, is set to play Italian Fabio Fognini in the first semi-final later on Saturday.

Fabio Fognini upsets Davydenko and reaches Mercedes Cup semifinals

Fabio Fognini upset Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 at the Mercedes Cup to reach his first semifinal in a year.

Fognini will next play against Victor Hanescu, who beat Alexandre Sidorenko 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Fognini’s match was interrupted by rain for about 30 minutes at 4-4 in the third set.

Davydenko double-faulted to give two match points to Fognini, who won when the Russian sent a backhand wide on the second.

The rain returned after the match and the organizers were forced to postpone the other two quarterfinals until Saturday.

Robin Soderling reaches Swedish Open semifinals

Robin Soderling beat Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-3 to reach the semifinals at the Swedish Open.

Soderling broke Almagro’s serve twice in the opening set and then broke Almagro to lead 5-3 in the second set.
Soderling then wrapped up the match in the next game when Almagro’s service return sailed long.

It was Soderling’s second win over Almagro in less than a month. He also won a third-round match at Wimbledon.

“I played well today,” Soderling said. “I hit the ball well. Maybe I didn’t move at 100 percent. Almagro is an excellent clay-court player and I beat him in two straight (sets), so that is very good for my confidence.”

Soderling will play either Andreas Vinciguerra or Jurgen Melzer for a place in the final at the Swedish Open.

Roger Federer was honored in his home town of Basel and he talks about it...

Yesterday I was in Basel and was given the award "Ehrespalebärglemer".This award is given to persons (born or living in Basel) who carry the City Basel in a positive sense beyond its borders and makes the city well known. This was a huge honor for me as Basel means so much to me. I had a chance to see so many family, friends and fans. It was very special that so many members of my fan club came to this event.

Michael Stich, Retired Wimbledon champion, to play doubles

It looks like Michael Stich was a bit boring and decided to step into a tennis court as a professional player again after being retired for a long time.

Michael Stich will return to o play doubles at the German Open in Hamburg next week.

Stich, a 40 year-old who reached a career-high singles ranking of world number 2, will team up with Mischa Zverev.

“For the past five years I have been training in Hamburg with Mischa and at some point we had the idea to play doubles in a tournament together,” Stich, who is the tournament director in Hamburg, said.

Zverev said: “It was always my dream to play doubles with someone of his quality. I am certain we can go through a couple of rounds.”

Fernando Verdasco reaches quarterfinals at Swedish Open

Fernando Verdasco has reached the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open, saving a match point late in the third set before beating Daniel Koellerer 6-7 (1), 6-2, 7-5.

Leading 5-4, Koellerer reached match point when the Spaniard hit a forehand wide. But the unseeded Austrian hit a long return next, then made two unforced errors and Verdasco held to 5-5. Verdasco broke to lead 6-5 and then held to love, ending the three-hour match with an ace.

Jurgen Melzer, Nicolas Almagro and Andreas Vinciguerra also reached the last eight.

Melzer defeated Daniel-Gimeno Traver 6-2, 6-2 to line up a match with Vinciguerra, who ousted Guillermo Canas 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.

Almagro rallied past Potito Starace of Italy 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 and will play Robin Soderling of Sweden.

Koellerer was treated during two changeovers late in the third set because of calf cramps. After being broken in the 11th game and falling on the court, a trainer and an official helped him to his chair.

“I was cramping all over my legs, but at 5-5 it was impossible to play any more,” Koellerer said. “I’m really disappointed because I had a lot of chances in the third set. It was a very good match. At the end I think he deserved to win.”

Koellerer also had four break points when leading 4-3 in the third set.

Verdasco will play either Victor Crivoli of Romania or Juan Monaco of Argentina in Friday’s quarterfinals.

“It was really hard,” Verdasco said. “He played really good. My last weekend in the Davis Cup was so hard. I played 11 1/2 hours in three days, two five-set matches and the other one four sets with a lot of pressure. It’s hard for me to be 100 percent all the time. My legs felt a little bit tired.”
