The DarkSide ROM is another great ROM featuring 1.3Ghz overclocked kernel, WebTop hack (for HDMI), and Ext4 filesystem for a super-fast Atrix 4G experience with a custom UI (red and grey).

This is probably one of the best ROMs for the Atrix 4G right now, give it a go and let me know how it works out for you.

Looking for a fast ROM for your Atrix 4G?  If so, you might want to try out the Auora ROM, which comes with Ext4 filesystem (makes your file i/o read and writes much faster) plus 1.3Ghz overclocking.  I was getting over 3500 on Quadrant benchmarking, which is a vast improvement over stock.

For those of you with rooted Atrix 4G who want to install one of the newer ROMs that support Ext4 filesystem (which makes your Atrix 4G super fast), you will need to update to the latest ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.3, here’s how:

Step 1. Download this zip file and copy the whole zip file over to the root folder of your Atrix 4G internal storage or SD card:

Step 2. Next, turn off your Atrix 4G then boot into Fastboot mode by holding down Volume Down and Power button together.

Step 3. Hit Volume Down button until you see “Android Recovery” then hit the Power button.

Step 4. Select “install zip from sdcard” using Volume buttons then press Power button.

Step 5. Choose “choose zip from sdcard” and hit the Power button.

Step 6. Choose “Internal SD Card” or “External SD Card” depending on where you copied over the zip file earlier and hit the Power button.

Step 7. Choose “CWM-recovery-atrix4.1.zip” and hit the Power button.

Step 8. Choose “Yes” and hit the Power button.

Step 9. Go back to main menu then Advanced->Reboot Recovery.

Step 10. Verify your recovery has changed to v.5.0.2.3 and you are good to go.

If you are on stock Froyo or Gingerbread ROM, you are not enjoying the best of a “rooted” Gingerbread ROM as there’s one floating all over the interwebs.

What can rooted Gingerbread ROM give you? Everything that a stock one does plus free wifi tethering (without having to pay AT&T AGAIN for the internet you’ve already paid for), ability to install other rooted apps, overclock your Atrix 4G, and a whole lot more.

So, where do you begin?

First, you need to root your Atrix 4G using our guide on How to Root your Atrix 4G.

Then, you need to unlock your bootloader and install permanent recovery on your Atrix 4G.

Next, make sure you make a backup of your rooted ROM just in case something goes wrong or you want to go back to Froyo.

Once all those are done (and it doesn’t take long believe me), you can copy over the rooted Gingerbread ROM file to your internal storage or SD card of your Atrix 4G.

And simply flash it in Clockwork Recovery.

When you are done, don’t forget to show off to your friends who have stock Gingerbread ROMs.

Why?

If you are going to install new ROMs or overclocking kernels, you will want to make sure you have a restore point, sorta like Windows 7 system restoration feature. This can be done easily using ClockworkMod Recovery, which allows you to completely backup/restore your current ROM, whatever it’s on.

This backup method will backup all your settings, contacts, apps, ROM, and the kernel. It won’t back up contents of your internal storage of SD card. For that, we suggest you to simply copy over the contents to your hard disk.

First, you will need a rooted Atrix 4G and have ClockworkMod recovery installed.

Once you get those out of the way, simply get into ClockworkMod Recovery by rebooting while holding down both Power button and Volume Down button until you see “fastboot” on the screen.

Simply hit the Volume Down button until you see “Android Recovery” then hit the Volume Up button.

Once ClockworkMod Recovery menus show up, choose “Backup and Restore”.

Here, you can choose “Internal SD Card” or “External SD Card”.  If you have a microSD card inserted into your Atrix 4G, you can back up your ROM in it or on Internal storage.

You can either choose “Backup” or “Restore” to backup your current ROM or restore your backed-up ROMs.

Once backup starts, it should take about 5 minutes.  When it’s done, you are good to go, reboot your phone or install new ROMs and enjoy.

This method is for Windows computers, if you don’t have one, I suggest to borrow your friend’s for couple hours.

Make sure you’ve rooted your Atrix 4g first!!!

To do this, you will need to download the atrix4gcwm2.zip file:

Unzip the downloaded folder into the root directory of your hard disk, such as c:\atrix4gcwm2.

Next, open up a command prompt by typing “cmd” under Start->Search.

Browse to the atri4gcwm2 directory by typing:

cd \atrix4gcwm2

Then type:

fastboot oem unlock

This will give you the unlocking code, which we will use.

Type:

fastboot oem unlock UNLOCKINGCODE

Replace UNLOCKINGCODE with the unlocking code you got earlier.

Next, flash the permanent ClockworkMod Recovery by typing:

fastboot flash recovery recovery-en-goapk-0630-1029.img

If everything went well, your bootloader is unlocked (meaning you can boot other ROMs) and you have permanent ClockworkMod Recovery.

You can check you have permanent ClockworkMod Recovery by rebooting your phone holding down both Power Button and Volume Down Button.

When you see fastboot, use the Volume Down button until you see “Android Recovery” then press Volume Up button.

For those of you who’ve rooted your Atrix 4G, you will want to install a custom version of ClockworkMod Recovery, which is a recovery software that will let you backup, restore, and install ROMs on your Atrix 4G.

So, let’s begin, first make sure you have a rooted Atrix 4G first.

Next, download the atrix4gcwm.zip and unzip to the root folder of your hard drive.

Download atrix4gcwm.zip

Make sure your Atrix 4G is in USB Debugging Mode by checking it on under Settings->Applications->Development and connect via USB cable to your computer.

Open up a command prompt and go into the atrix4gcwm directory:

cd \atrix4gcwm

Then type:

adb install MOTOA4_Bootstrap_0408_1720-signed.apk

to install the System Recovery app.

Open up the System Recovery app in your Atrix 4G.

Then hit “Install Recovery” and this will install ClockworkMod Recovery on your Atrix 4G.

Once that’s installed, you can always get into ClockworkMod Recovery by opening up the System Recovery app, then connecting your USB AC charger to your Atrix 4G (not USB to your computer!!!), then hitting the “Recovery Mode” button.

This will work on any version of Atrix 4G on AT&T. (not tested with other carriers)

First, put your Atrix 4G into RSD mode by turning off your phone then holding down the Power Button WHILE HOLDING DOWN Volume Up button and you can let go of both buttons when you see a screen like this:

Next, connect your Atrix 4G phone to your Windows computer via USB cable then download the Atrix4groot.zip here:

Unzip the file and install the RSD drivers.

For Windows 32-bit systems, run Handset_USB_Driver_32_v4.9.0.msi and Windows 64-bit systems, run Handset_USB_Driver_64_v4.9.0.msi.

Once the drivers have been installed, you can verify in Device Manager and see “Motorola Flash Interface”.

Next run RSDLite5.3.1.msi to install RSDLite software.

When that’s completed, you can run the RSDLite program, then choose preinstall.sbf as Filename and hit Start to begin.

When that’s all completed, your Atrix 4G will reboot by itself, now goto Settings->Applications->Development and make sure USB Debugging is checked on.

Download the adb.zip file here and unzip to the root folder of your hard disk.

Open up a command prompt then browse to your adb directory by typing:

cd \adb

Then type the following:

/preinstall/dosu
/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
PATH=/system/bin:$PATH pm install /preinstall/Superuser.apk

Go back to your phone and you can now see that you have Superuser app installed and have root.  That’s it!

For those of you who don’t want to pay extra $20/month to AT&T on the same internet you paid already on your Atrix 4G, here’s how to get free wifi tether on your Atrix 4G by installing the free Android Wifi Tether app.

Requirements: You need a rooted Atrix 4G phone.

I tried to make it simple for you so go download this zip file: (or if you have adb already just go download the latest version of Android Wifi Tether app here.)

Unzip it, put it under your root directory such as c:\atrix4g-wifitether

Then open up a command prompt and type:

cd \atrix4g-wifitether

apk install wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk

Go to your phone now and you should find the Wireless Tether app installed.

Run it and start tethering!

No, AT&T can’t do anything about it, Congress has recently passed a law saying users of Android smartphones can do whatever modifications they want on their phone.  Of course, AT&T is also free to block those users but this isn’t illegal by any means.
