Vi ricordate dove la sottoscritta vorrebbe abitare, se avesse la fortuna di vivere a Parigi? Forza, l’ho ripetuto almeno un milione di volte: in un sottotetto. Quindi non è difficile capire perché sia rimasta subito colpita da questo appartamento nella Ville Lumière, no?

Ma se la romantica vista cielo ha fatto scattare la scintilla, il fuoco è rimasto acceso anche per altri motivi. Quali? Beh, innanzitutto amo l’idea di aver tinteggiato le travi in quella rilassante tonalità di grigio. E poi che dire dei mattoni a vista e del caldo pavimento in legno che delimita il soggiorno? Amore assoluto.

Insomma, uno splendido mix di materiali e texture che non poteva proprio lasciarmi indifferente. E voi che ne pensate? Ce lo fareste un pensierino?

Addormentarsi guardando le stelle? Oh sì!

Un loft sous les toits de Paris

Transformer l’ancien hôtel particulier où vécut la meneuse de revue Joséphine Baker en un duplex-loft bioclimatique, c’est le challenge que se sont lancé l’architecte François Pélegrin et son épouse Evelyne quand ils ont découvert ce lieu de rêve. Ils ont maintenant eux aussi deux amours, leur loft et Paris.

Dans cet élégant duplex en noir et blanc, l’espace du bas accueille les pièces à vivre : le salon circulaire invite à la convivialité ; le coin salle à manger met en valeur une table dessinée par François Pélegrin et réalisée sur mesure par un artisan ; et la cuisine Mobili tout en rondeurs joue l’accord parfait. Enfin, planté au centre de la pièce, l’escalier en colimaçon tient le haut de l’affiche et capte toutes les attentions.

François Pélegrin a troqué l’ancien garde-corps de la mezzanine pour une verrière fabriquée sur mesure, permettant une meilleure isolation acoustique, thermique et olfactive.

Déjà très utilisée au rez-de-chaussée, l’idée d’un espace en libre circulation se poursuit sur la mezzanine, avec cette enfilade de pièces non cloisonnées.

Les meubles en bois blond confèrent à la chambre une ambiance plus nature. Dans le fond de la pièce, le dressing habillé de rideaux évoquant Paris, d’une psyché dorée et d’un valet évoque l’ancienne habitante des lieux : la meneuse de revue Joséphine Baker.

Entre la chambre et le dressing, se cache un cabinet de douche très fonctionnel.

Du haut de l’escalier, la vue sur le salon circulaire est tout simplement imprenable.

L’aménagement décloisonné offre une vue panoramique sur cette pièce en forme de dôme. Ici, la géométrie se dessine en noir et blanc et confère au lieu un esprit très graphique.

Mur de brique et toit d’ardoise se dressent face à la terrasse aménagée de 50 m². Un espace idéal pour convier des amis à un apéritif pour admirer la vue sur Paris.

C’est en septembre 2010 que François Pélegrin, l’architecte aux principes bioclimatiques, et sa femme Évelyne achètent cet ancien hôtel particulier du 20^e arrondissement de Paris, où vécut Josephine Baker. Leur intention ? En faire un bâtiment basse consommation (BBC). Mais l’isolation ne peut se faire que de l’intérieur, la façade étant classée par la Ville de Paris. Les travaux de rénovation vont durer six mois et coûteront environ 1 000 € du m².
Un projet ambitieux et parsemé de contraintes. François Pélegrin y installe son bureau d’études et aménage avec sa famille au-dessus. Le système d’isolation choisi est performant et permet de conserver la belle hauteur sous combles ainsi qu’un grand volume. L’architecte intègre une VMC double flux, une pompe à chaleur, un plafond rayonnant et un plancher chauffant. La pureté des lignes et l’élégance des matériaux, comme le sol en chêne, soulignent la structure du lieu.
Le choix d’un intérieur en noir et blanc s’impose. Formalisé par cette charte graphique, le lieu en a été sublimé : « Nous ne voulions pas mettre en valeur une chose plus qu’une autre, l’architecture se suffisant à elle-même. Seul l’escalier repeint en noir trônant au milieu du salon se détache du reste. »

They added spray-foam insulation, a stairwell from the kitchen and some extra electrical. Thew cut 4×8 plywood sheets into panels and white washed them with one light coat of paint. They washed the floors and sealed the floors, but didn’t sand or stain them. The front end of the attic became the bedroom with a small closet and the back became a living room and office, with the stairs located behind the sofa.

While scouring Pinterest the other day for some creative and inspiring use of space for our plan to turn our room over the garage into another bedroom, full bath and walk-in closet, I about died when I saw this cramped attic-turned-chic kids room by Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl of LA-based design firm LIFE.STYLE. Not only did they nail every single detail, from the Osborne and Little Coronata Star wallpaper, satin brass hardware and neutral color palette, but they made brilliant use of every single inch of space (the bookshelves on either side of the windows adds surface space and the trundel beds are great for hosting lots of friends for sleepovers!) Attics are tricky in the first place, thanks to usually low, sloped ceilings, but this room feels open and airy. I love the simple white and gold color palette with subtle, patterned pillows and coordinating Roman shade and a beautiful herringbone jute rug for a little texture, leaving the pops of color to come from the books and toys on the shelves. This is about as perfect as a kids space gets! This layout could work for an adult space, too, or needed extra space to house guests! czech republic-based architectural firm idhea has completed the renovation of a house, originally built in the 1930’s in bubeneč prague district.
a combination of the original brick chimney wall, the wood planks and soft gray plaster create a contemporary textural pallet.
the popular zone was an important factor in the programming and placement of the interior spaces. the more public areas,
such as the living and dining area are facing the stromovka park and the zoo in troja, while the windows of the bedroom
have high-gown lime-trees outside, proving privacy.

having minimal floorspace, the challenge of the project was finding a balance between the desired openness while still integrating
all the necessary areas. this was achieved with a gallery space atop the stairs, giving the view of the sloped volume.
combining storage space with structural elements create focal points in the within the apartment.

After Leanne Ford Shaffer and her husband, Brad Shaffer—the brains behind Acre Goods + Services, a creative agency focused on interior design, styling, and branding—got married in 2010, the couple began looking for a new home. A Craigslist search for a rental unexpectedly led to a mortgage: The Shaffers scoped out a 1907 schoolhouse—anchoring two wooded acres in the village of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, 13 miles northwest of Pittsburgh—on a Saturday and made an offer the next Monday.

An Architect’s Attic Apartment with Custom Furniture

If you spend your life ensuring that other people have beautiful places to live and timeless building where they can thrive, it can be difficult to find the time to make your own space what you really want it to be. For architect Dimitar Karanikolov from firm Meshroom and interior designer Ven Niklova, it was a two-year labor of love that finally found them with a space they could call their own. After returning to Sofia, Bulgaria after many years abroad in London, the pair was searching for a home where they could put down roots when they found a unique attic apartment in a new development. The space was small but it had character and they knew they could turn it into something they loved. With their own expertise and ingenuity, they combined many creative spaces and custom pieces that resulted in the inspiring home you see here.

The upper level apartment grabs hold of the old-fashioned aesthetic that is currently in style and uses it to innovative ends. Though modern technology is central to both the architect and designer professions, the pair has gone to great lengths to conceal the most garish of modern comforts. For instance, an air conditioning unit is hidden inside a custom wooden drawer while bar edison bulbs dangle from magnets over the dining table.

The largest custom creation in the small space is the large black box that stands at the center of the room. Though you would never guess it, this room is perched atop the building’s elevator shaft and actually contains the apartment’s bathroom. The exterior material is dark concrete paneling which looks worn as though it has always been a part of this building.

Artist Builds Amazing 200 Sq. Ft. Tiny Home in Hawaii - Ideas for building an attic

I had to share this story with you on an artist named Jay Nelson who built an amazing 200 sq. ft. tiny home in Hawaii.

He’s already known for building artistic and functional micro homes before. This includes mobile structures, too.

But just the other day he shared his latest little house with Lloyd Kahn over at Shelter Publications and I wanted to let you know about it here.

I absolutely LOVE this design. It’s simple yet very functional. Just what a tiny house is supposed to be. And I personally love the fact that it’s NOT on wheels and is built on a ‘normal’ foundation with outdoor deck space. This is totally how I’d like to do it on my own land someday. How about you?

A house that has manu ideas that can relate to an attic conversion

Over the summer and into the fall, Phloem Studio and Earthbound Industries got a chance to collaborate on another job with PATH Architecture. (You can see photos of an earlier job we did together here.) This time out, we worked with Jeff Vincent on the interior of an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) for a family not far from Laurelhurst Park here in Portland. The structure is very simple, with a garage below and a studio/guesthouse space above, accessible by an exterior staircase in the back of the building. The ADU has floor to ceiling windows on the south and east walls, overlooking the tree canopy of the backyard. Jeff used the pitch of the roof along the west wall to maximum effect, designing a sofa that transforms into a bed and a dining table that slides underneath a desk surface. The whole room feels like a magical, modern treehouse.

It was a pleasure to work on such a unique project

This is what it looked like inside when we took field measurements before building anything. If you look closely, you’ll see black steel brackets coming out of that wall that will eventually carry the weight of some pretty long floating shelves

This is after the drywall, while the ceiling is going in. The entire ceiling is rift sawn white oak flooring, to mirror the floor and match the cabinets and furniture

It took a very large pile of rift sawn white oak to make all the counters, cabinets and furniture in the space

Very large oak glue ups were a common sight in the shop for a while. They were not light.

Here is our pile on the first day of install. That low wall with exposed studs will soon transform

Piece by piece we added cabinets, panels and counters.

After we finished installing the majority of the cabinets and the counters, it was back to the shop to finish the stools, table, sofa and some other odds and ends.

We were all really into these solid wood cubbies that stored above the flat file cabinet. Here they are, right before they had finish sprayed on them. Notice the grain match on the front faces.

And we’re back to the ADU.

It was really cool how Jeff took advantage of the roof pitch — it was a very smart design. The whole west wall has cabinets running along it that are deeper than average. The desk has room for a full size dining room table and stools to slide under.

A very unique custom piece was this built-in sofa. Leland Duck of Revive Upholstery (another business in the Beam & Anchor building) did the upholstery. It also takes advantage of the depth allowed from the pitch of the roof.

As you can see Bren (from Earthbound) demonstrate — the back cushions come off, and an upholstered door opens up to store away those cushions. It’s also where bedding can be kept when the sofa bed is just a sofa.

The sofa pulls out, revealing itself to actually be a full size bed.

The roof pitch also allows for the very deep drawers of this flat file cabinet. Notice those solid wood cubbies up top that pull out to

house art and office supplies. I wish I had this cabinet!

All the cabinets have these really nice custom made bead-blasted

steel handles.

Here is the kitchenette with those two floating shelves and the east

wall full of floor to ceiling windows.

The bathroom is on the other side of the kitchenette wall with this

small vanity and floating shelf.

In the backyard there is a custom hot tub and small fire pit on the

patio.

Here is the exterior of the building. It’s stucco with cedar and douglas fir accents.

15 Tips for An Attic Renovation

If you're need of some extra space — a new bedroom, office or playroom — look first to the square footage already in your house. Renovating an attic is a common and smart way to renovate your home without the expense and energy of an addition. But before you do, make sure to read these great tips from This Old House to ensure your renovation is safe, efficient and a pleasing place to live.

Account for Codes and Safety: Enforcement varies, but codes typically say that at least half of a finished attic must be at least 7 feet high, and that this area must be a minimum of 7 feet wide and 70 square feet. Also, hire an engineer to inspect your house's foundation and framing to ensure they can carry the extra load.
Put in a Ceiling Fan for Better Climate Control: If you've got headroom, a fan will make a finished attic more comfortable in warmer months by giving you a cool breeze indoors. Flip the reverse switch in wintertime and it will push warmer air down to keep you cozy.
Hush Up the Floors: Attic activity can cause a racket in the rooms below. Beefier floor joists will quiet things down, as will filling the bays with blown-in dense-pack insulation. And don't forget the low-tech fix: carpet or area rugs.
Splurge on Spray-Foam Roof Insulation: It costs two to three times more than fiberglass batt insulation. But the roof is a major pathway to heat loss—and gain—so it's worth shelling out the extra bucks for spray foam. It forms a much tighter air barrier, and you'll get the same R-value with fewer inches of the stuff, so you'll have extra room overhead.
If You're Installing a New Bathroom, Site it Above a Bath or Kitchen Below: Minimize the distance between new and existing plumbing to reduce costs and limit wall damage as pipes are installed. You can sometimes tie new pipes to old ones, but it's often preferable to run the attic's supply and drain lines all the way to the basement, for optimal water pressure and proper venting of sewer gases.
Use Every Nook and Cranny For Storage: Perimeter drawers, cabinets, and cubbies save space when recessed into knee walls. Even awkward niches—alongside chimneys and pipe chases, or near low walls—offer an opportunity for installing DIY open shelving.
Put It on Its Own Thermostat: For maximum comfort, create a separate zone within your HVAC system for the finished space. There's a chance you'll need to enlarge the system if your attic wasn't heated or cooled previously, so call in a pro to make sure it's up to snuff.

Attic Apartment With Generous Skylights And Nice Views

I have to say that attic apartments aren’t my favorite type. They just seem like they could have had much more space inside but they don’t because of the roof. But there are also good things that can be said about attic apartments and about this one in particular. The shape of the roof gives you the opportunity to include many skylights into its design, as you can see in this case.

The skylights let in natural light but they also connect you with the exterior at a very special level. Also, even though the roof means lack of space which could be used for storage or for something else, its presence also makes the apartment feel a little cozier and very inviting.

It usually also makes it look smaller so the décor has to be carefully chosen. In the case of this particular attic apartment, the interior design is simple so the shape of the roof and the presence of the beams don’t interfere with its spaciousness very much.

The walls and ceiling are white and the floor has a dark shade of brown which I personally love. It contrasts with the walls and it also gives elegance to the space. Smart storage solutions were found for everything in the apartment. You can see lots of shelves and cabinets placed in strategic areas and in all the corners of the apartment, in spaces which would otherwise remain empty.{found on alexanderwhite}.

Slanted Wall Built-in's With Hidden Storage

A couple of months ago my sister and her husband hit me up with a challenge. To help makeover a room off of their bedroom/bathroom. They wanted this slanted wall, A-frame, type room to be a closet/laundry room with built-in's. I was totally up for the challenge, but we only had 6 days to do it....eeek!
With a lot of hard work, and craziness (we each have six kids :) we were able to pull it off! I designed and constructed built-in's to cover each slanted wall complete with a roll out middle section for access to a hidden storage area! It is perfect solution to making an awkward space beautiful and useful too!

Before, of one side, of the room, you can see we had a long way to go in 6 days...My sister had taped and mudded once before I arrived. We sanded, mudded, and sanded again so we could paint the walls.

After cutting and painting the plywood I began building the shelves using pocket holes.

I built six sections, four that would be built-in (above). Each had a hanging section and shelves. The two middle sections were just for hanging clothes.

I added castors to the bottom of the middle sections.

These are the 2x4 bases that the four built-in sections would sit on. I secured them to the floor and wall with screws. Then I added the shelves and attached them to the bases and walls.

Here is what they look like all secured and without the trim. The trim is the magical touch, and makes all the difference in the world to finish off the project

A true fairytale - a beautiful historic building rising from the ruins. You'll find me on this Monday morning taking coffee on the terrace sleepily drinking in the spectacular view of the Lago Trasinemo below. Might take a dip later. What a place to take an imaginary break on the first work day of the week!

A Cosy Attic Room

Oliver and Else are both the creators of the brand Olivelse (a lot of you have probably seen their ukuleles cushions) and the parents of three little kids.
They have remodeled their daughters’ room and the result has been a sweet shared room full of unique objects and poetry. Wood and colourful accessories are the protagonists of the room jointly with vintage items and beautiful prints.
A cosy place to sleep, play and feel comfortable.

Day Five: Dream Home Tour

I'm so sad this tour is coming to an end! A million thank you's to Cristi and Jeff for welcoming us all into their amazing home! I hope you thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I did, and that our final day today left you with a ton of inspiration. I'm totally smitten with the master bedroom in their home. Doesn't it exude such a calming retreat-like vibe?? I love that they went with the grasscloth wallcovering from Thibaut...the texture and color is perfection. The sliding barn door is super cute too! And HELLO, dream bath alert! Did you see all that glorious tile?! We can thank the talented guys over at Greg's Tile Creations for that eye candy. It looks fantastic with the wallpaper (Coral Gables from Thibaut). I really love the layout of this space, the corner vanity is so cool, and the open shower like that. I'd never manage to get ready in the mornings with all this beauty to stare off at!

Next we have their upstairs hallway. I've never seen a more lovelier window seat! I love Cristi's display cabinet here...almost everything you see was passed down from her mom. Love the wallpaper in this area too...Thibaut of course (Roma in White on Pearl). She has even more sentimental stuff displayed in that gorgeous laundry room, in addition to more beautiful cabinetry work done by Benjamin Blackwelder (painted BM Palladian Blue...so pretty). I love that the flower panels are doors that are covering the circuit switches. Cute touch!

Lastly in this week-long tour is the breezy family room. This looks like the place the family kicks back and relaxes. Did you see that fan?! Coolest thing ever! I've been crazy about that Tiffany Peacock rug forever! Seriously this home has some brilliant, colorful rugs, doesn't it?! (Walls are painted Restoration Hardware's Silver Sage.)

With the help of my friends George Oliphant, Stephen Fanuka, Rhonda Scharf and Marc Spector we rescued the DiMarcos and created a master bedroom suite on the 2nd floor of their home. I was responsible for designing the new Walk-in Closet and organizing and styling it for the reveal.
What a difference 2 weeks make! Hard work, attention to detail and lots of folks hustling got the job done.

Amazing Apartment - Attic

This 19th century Victorian style house San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighborhood was "remodelled" with the best of hippie intentions. Jump forward to the 21st century and architects Mork Ulnes have respected the building's past and added their own slightly scandi touches to this renovation of the top 2 floors . Beautiful light floods into the attic bedroom while the butcher-block stairway and bridge provide drama and a sense of transition from public to private space.

Raise your hand if you have space to sleep all your houseguests. Thought not.
Basically, no one has enough guest rooms. But as I learned from living in New York (where for two years I operated a de facto hotel to accommodate the sleep needs of anyone I'd ever met who was averse to spending $350 a night on a room), nearly every home has space you can transform into emergency guest quarters.
"Extra bedroom" is, after all, a loose term. It can be a synonym for "basement." Or "fold-out sofa." Or even "closet," in the case of those space-deprived urban parents desperate to put the baby's crib somewhere. In my Upper West Side apartment, the extra bedroom was an inflatable mattress that traveled from room to room, as needed. In Northern California, where I live now, the gimlet eye of the beleagured host often fixes on the garage.
Even the tiniest one-car garage, it turns out, can become an instant cottage (with help from Ikea). We recently spent the night in this 186-square-foot guest grottage to prove the point:

Above: Two pairs of vintage French doors, unearthed at Ohmega Salvage in Berkeley, CA, run the length of one wall to let in plenty of natural light.
In the amount of space it takes to keep a car, the guest grottage has a tiny living room, library, bathroom, and kitchenette.

Above: As a backdrop to a vintage captain's bed, a wall of closets and cubbies is covered in Wainscot Panels ($19.75 for an 8-by-4-foot panel at Home Depot) in an homage to shiplap siding.

Above: Narrow closets with shelves and hanging space flank the bed. Above is more hidden storage, three cubbies big enough to store suitcases (and an extra inflatable mattress). The reading light is a Reed swing-arm lamp in oil-rubbed bronze ($335) from Rejuvenation.

Above: The view from the captain's bed. On the opposite wall, behind the miniature library, lurks a bathroom offering guests full toothbrushing capabilities. The floor is cork; glue-down Black Ripple Cork Tiles are $1.79 per square foot at iCorkfloor.

Above: Kitchenette by Ikea. The backsplash is made of stainless Perfekt Plinth, cut to fit ($15 per 88-inch length). A stainless steel Fyndig sink ($26.98) and Edsvik chrome faucet ($49.99) are set in a beechwood Numerär countertop ($195 for a 73-inch-long slab).

Amazing Danish Home

This Copenhagen home. Just over the bridge in Denmark, this family home has been decorated with bright pops of colour and pastels against a black and white background. I love how the children's toys blend in to every room in the house to make a fun, relaxed and vibrant family home. Inspiration indeed?!
