I am so glad I get to photograph families growing up. You don’t realize how fast time flies until you look at your own family. It’s easy to forget the little details and I love documenting it.

Kansas City summers are hot! We beat the heat by spending a lot of time in our pool over the summer. Fortunately now that I have an underwater camera I can use it to my hearts desire. Before with the big camera I’d get it out poolside for a few pictures and then quickly put it back before anything could happen to my monster camera. That would also mean I’d lose documenting a lot of those fun times we have. Now I can document that time without any worries.

We go to the library at least once and usually twice a week. I love that my kiddos already love reading and the library. I would often get grounded from the library as a child.

The first thing we have to do is return all of our old books. We love that there’s a machine that does it all automatically now at our library!

We will watch and watch as the book gets scanned and then goes down the conveyor belt.

Then ofcourse we have to head over to the toy section and check everything out. Toys that aren’t your own are always the best.

Were we here for something other than toys? Oh yeah books!

Now we just have to find the perfect ones!

There’s always lots of choices to choose from but Curious George and Amelia Bedelia are almost always in our piles. I think our bag is heavy enough – that’s how we determine if we have enough books, gotta still be able to pick that sucker up!

Oh wait mom we NEED this one too, can’t we get just one more?

See it’s really cool and we HAVE to get it this time. Repeat this last process at least twice until the bag gives a nice shoulder/arms workout for the one carrying it.

Then we have to check out and we have another cool machine for that. The kids are really good about taking turns as we swap out each book to be checked out.

Gabby had a field trip day a few weeks ago. This time we went to Deanna Rose Farmstead. It’s a great hands on farm that has tons of fun things to do. If you haven’t been there, live in Overland Park and have kids well then you’re missing out. The best part is it’s free most days to go. Gabby has been there countless times since it’s right around the block from the grandparents house. However, she’d never been there before with her friends from pre-school.

Ofcourse every great field trip involves a bus ride!

We loved the peacocks!

But the goats might have been our favorite. The goats loved us too!

Next up on the agenda – a hayride, but we had to wait for our turn first. Doesn’t Emily have the most gorgeous eyes!?

We saw lots of fun stuff on our hayride!

They even have a mining area that you can get a bag of sand and find some gemstones! So sand + water + rocks – it was a big hit with the entire class. We had to practically drag the kids out of that section so we could do everything else!

More cowbell? Please notice my child is the only one with water all over her from the “mining”.

Then we went fishing with corn! Who knew fish loved corn? Not I, especially since this was my very first time fishing ever. The things you do for your children.

But then a terrible, terrible thing happened. We actually caught a fish! We didn’t realize we’d have to deal with fish when you’re fishing! Thankfully it wasn’t my child who caught it so I successfully pawned that job off on one of the teachers. They’re trained for that kind of thing anyway right?

This is Gabby’s class.

I think it can be easy to lose your identity of who you are as a person once you become a mom. I’m intent on making sure who I am doesn’t get lost in the day to day of wiping noses, pouring glasses of milk and demands for more cut apples. It’s one reason you’ll always see my facebook profile has me in it (ok maybe joined with a smaller cutie) but I’m always in the shot because it’s my profile, not theirs. Please don’t mistake me – I love, love, LOVE, my children but they aren’t my whole world. Gasp did I just say that? Yep I did and I’m ok with it. I know in order to be an excellent mom I have to take time away from them to recharge.

That’s what this month’s post focuses on. This last weekend I took a trip with some girlfriends to Vail. No we didn’t ski. Instead, we shopped, we ate really good food, we got pedicures, and then we shopped some more. Basically we did whatever we wanted because we didn’t have a small child demanding all of our attention.

What happened when I got back? My kids didn’t die, they actually missed me a bit. I have an amazing husband that I never doubt can hold the fort down. I might suspect they eat a lot more junk food than when mom’s at home but whatever. I cut up apples (thank goodness for that apple cutter I never thought I’d use) and I wiped more noses. But more importantly I’m a better mom because I took some time away from my kids.

My daughter is definitely a girlie girl. We paint our nails all the time.

Picking the right color is the toughest part, I just wish we had more of a selection to choose from. We clearly don’t have enough options….

Then we have to remove the old color. We’ve been wearing KU blue to support our Jayhawks during the NCAA tournament. Don’t worry people the blue will be back in time for game time. We’ve got to do our part after all!

We’re ready for our toe color!

Then it’s time for our fingers, it’s tough work to decide between all the different princess colors.

So we decide to do one on every finger. Blowing on your painted fingers is essential to the process.

Can I tell you how much I just love this picture? She’s grown up so much lately. I just want to freeze her age right now so I can fully soak up my four year old. Until the magic anti-growing up solution is created I’ll have to settle with photography.

For Christmas both kids got books with a reader that reads to them. As a child I loved to read and I want them to love it as much as I do. I was the kid that would get grounded from going to the library – I loved reading that much. A common saying for the Frantz household is “books are our friends”. Since they aren’t reading solo yet, these leapster toys really encourage them to turn the pages, and discover the stories for themselves. I was fortunate to find the books when Target was having a heck of a deal and the only drawback is we have more than the devices will hold!

I love how engaged they get. They will pour over the books until I’m tired of hearing the songs and stories. Did I mention they have songs too? Oh yes wonderful catchy tunes that invariably will be played over and over. I’ve had one stuck in my head for awhile. Unfortunately that one was taken off the device when we switched books Little guy LOVES that one a little too much.

Please note that Mater is right there – he loves reading too!

OK sometimes Mater needs a slight break from the reading to rev his engine.

We’d never been to Wonderscope Children’s Museum but wanted to give it a try. The weather has been so cold that it really limits our play options. This is a family friendly museum where everything is hand’s on. The museum was originally a school and was renovated into being a children’s museum after it was closed down. Each room has a different theme, water, air, movement, building, pet and baby care, etc. The great thing is everything is supposed to be touched by little hands! We didn’t even have a chance to see all the rooms before we had to leave, I’m sure we’ll be back soon.

My children love any art projects but probably all preschoolers do. I could call something a ‘project’ and it’s instantly entertaining for them. We spend a lot of time in front of this table but in the winter this is our second home. Foam stickers are always lots of fun. Fortunately I had picked some up on a day after Christmas sale.

Since purple is one of Gabby’s favorite colors it’s no surprise she loved the purple penguin!

I love family traditions. I feel that having traditions make memories ‘stickier’ and easier for children to remember. All of our ornaments have a story. Every year each kiddo (and the hubs) get a new one in their stocking. Usually the ornament is related to something that’s important to them that year. Whenever we take a vacation we will usually get an ornament as well. This is the first year my kiddos understand that each one belongs to someone and has a story behind it. I pulled each ornament one by one and they’d want to hear the story behind that particular ornament.

When they grow up I want them each to take their own ornaments to their home to start off their own trees. The first year I had my own tree in my tiny little apartment (with my sister as my room mate) we had ZERO ornaments. So we ended up taking the few stuffed animals we still had and putting them all over the tree. I don’t want that for my children.

This is the one momma gave daddy the year he worked with ESPN a lot.

Mimi and Papa gave this one to brother when he was a baby.

Please note how all the snowmen are on the same branch. They must like to hang out together.

Ofcourse the gingerbread ornaments have to hang out together as well on the same branch.

We did something a little different this year for our pumpkins. In the past the children will pick out a pattern and then watch as sharp objects are used to carve them. Since the eldest is only 3 this results in a lot of “I can do it myself”. This is of course followed by the obligatory “No you will poke your eye out let momma poke her eye out instead”. It’s guaranteed that the cheap pumpkin carving kit tools will break five minutes into the process. We will then be left using a carving knife from the butcher block. Usually it takes so long that the kids have to go to bed and daddy is left to slave over some intricate Elmo carving. Where is the family love in that? No offense Elmo, we love you – especially in this house. However, I love my sanity more.

This year I decided our pumpkins were going to be something the children could do from start to finish themselves. My only goal was for us to enjoy the activity as a family. A side bonus was I able to document the entire process since I wasn’t actually doing the work

Now if you happen to see similar pumpkins in Olathe, KS somewhere then you will know where we live because I’m sure these are umm one of a kind! No seriously this project was definitely a winner. The kids had fun, were allowed to make a mess and mom didn’t yell when they tried to grab a butcher knife. Maybe one day we will go back to carving pumpkins but for now this is ok in our books.
