Patriots Park is a resource of the Columbia County Recreation Department located in Grovetown, GA on Columbia Road at the intersection with William Few Parkway. The park is home to a gymnasium (including 2 basketball courts, 4 racquetball courts, exercise room and restrooms with showers), 18 hole disc golf course, 9 tennis courts, 11 baseball fields of various sizes, 5 soccer fields and 2 playgrounds.

Patriots Park is also home to the biggest fireworks show in the county during the 4th of July Celebration. In addition to fireworks, there are usually arts and crafts vendors, games and rides for the kids, live music and plenty of food!

Who besides me loves watching “American Pickers” on the History Channel? Did you know that we have our own pickers here in Augusta?

Mema Had One will be opening in their new location (the old AWOL building on Washington Rd. at Calhoun Expressway) on May 1, 2012. It promises to be bigger and better as they’ll be bringing in additional vendors at the new location. One of my favorites will be Sweet Ludie’s Vintage Clothing.

So exactly what is Mema Had One?

From attic finds to one-of-a-kind treasures, Mema Had One strives to offer antiques, collectibles, furniture and decor at bargain prices. Originally established in 2003 as a casual, eclectic decor supply and installation business (primarily servicing bars/restaurants), Mema branched out into the retail world in May 2011 by opening a 1500 sq/ft shop on BJX. After only a year, they soon realized they needed more space. Now, Mema has secured the lease on an over 4200 sq/ft facility with a quaint cottage feel and plenty of parking. Mema Had One will re-open on May 1 at 2328 Washington Rd. @ Calhoun Expy (the former AWOL store).

The owners, Pam Hayes and Candice Lee, say they have a vision for the main entrance area. “We hope to create true nostalgia and transform it into a country store or mercantile. We want MHO to be an experience. And we are extending open invitations to any dealers who may want/need space. We are coming back bigger and better,” said Pam.

“The most often asked question we get is, ‘what’s up with that?’,” said Candice, referring to the business name and logo. The answer, in short is:
1. Mema was the term of endearment for Pam’s maternal grandmother, Ruby Walden.
2. Yes, that is Mema’s image
3. No, they have NOT been in business since 1922, that is just the year Mema was born.
4. The next time you’re strolling around that little antique shop and spot an interesting old object, chances are…your Mema had one too!

I had the pleasure today of meeting the owner of an exciting new restaurant coming to town. I also got a quick tour of the kitchen and tasted a divine treat fresh out of the oven. Trust me when I say that you won’t want to miss out!

We like to think of TASTE as a simple, quaint, un-pretentious tapas and wine bar that we trust will impart a warm, elegant, metropolitan setting and feel for our friends. Heggies Rock, located near Appling, GA off of Louisville Road, is truly a nature lover’s paradise. Under the direction of the Nature Conservancy, it is only open to the public during guided tours and you’d be well-advised to bring your camera. The preserve spans about 100 acres and rises 70 feet above the surrounding trees. You’ll find several endangered plant species at Heggies Rock, including the little pool sprite and mat-forming quillwort which grows only in one of the “dish gardens” – a shallow rock pool. The granite stonecrop and glade windflower are beautiful when in full bloom, so see if you can get a reservation during one of the spring tours. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Things to Do in Augusta GA

If Crums on Central isn’t one of your favorite Augusta GA restaurants, give it a try and it soon will be.

We decided to take advantage of a special child care event at church tonight and celebrate Valentine’s Day early. The kids were excited because they got pizza, snacks, crafts and a movie. I was excited because I was planning on surprising my husband with a trip to a restaurant he’s been wanting to try. Then I realized…the restaurant isn’t open on Sunday nights, and neither were the next 4 suggestions that he had

Crums on Central to the rescue! This was our first visit and we will definitely be back. We loved the atmosphere and everything on the menu sounded wonderful. We saw several comments on Foursquare about the crab cakes, so we started with those and the clam chowder. The clam chowder was truly the best we’ve had since our trip to the Oregon coast. Curiosity got the best of me and I had to try the Sunshine Pie – pizza with caramelized onions, bacon, feta and squash casserole. As amazing as it was, it wasn’t quite as great as the perfectly torched creme brûlée.

Bottom line? I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu.
