Former NBA Player Charged With Murder

2011-08-26T23:51:00.001-05:00

ATLANTA -- Police said late Friday that former NBA player Javaris Crittenton, who was once suspended by the league over guns in the locker room, has been charged with murder after a woman was shot on an Atlanta street.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said police have secured a murder warrant for the arrest of Crittenton, who played at Georgia Tech, in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Jullian Jones on Aug. 19. Campos said Crittenton is not in custody and is wanted.
Atlanta police Maj. Keith Meadows told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday night that Crittenton is believed to be in the Los Angeles area. He said the FBI is involved in the investigation.
Jones, a mother of four, was walking with a group of people on the city's southwest side when a dark-colored SUV drove by and she was shot by someone inside the vehicle, police said.
Investigators say they don't believe the woman was the intended target. Campos said the motive appears to be retaliation for a robbery in April, in which Crittenton was a victim, Campos said in a statement.
Messages left for an agent who has represented Crittenton were not immediately returned Friday night. Culled from Forbes.

Wayne Firing Shots At Jay-Z And Beyoncé

2011-08-26T23:43:00.000-05:00

Although megastar rappers Lil Wayne and Jay-Z share the same surname, there have been rumblings over the years that the Carters have been in direct competition with each other. One of the latest flare-ups in the alleged feud happened with Watch The Throne’s first leak “H.A.M.” in where Jay-Z’s line “Really you got baby money” got the attention of both Wayne and YMCMB boss Birdman who responded to the verse via Twitter. Although Wayne initially brushed off the assumed jab, it appears that on a new song from Tha Carter IV may be reigniting a clash between the two rap titans.

On the track “It’s Good,” Wayne is assisted by Jadakiss and YM soldier Drake before launching a not so subtle shot in the direction of Jay-Z with the lines “talk about Baby money, I got your baby money/Kidnap your bi--h, get that how much you love your lady money” – with the lines appearing to be in direct response to Jigga’s verse. In the battle of rap superiority, both men have claimed their greatness and can certainly boast a litany of accomplishments between them. But even with their respective paths to fame, is this current dustup imagined or is the Lil Wayne and Jay-Z beef headed towards an epic head to head showdown?

Fans have been chiming in on the song shortly after it leaked to the Web with fans, especially on social networking site Twitter. User @bigfella1906 said, “Lil wayne knows exactly wat he doin. Jay z know it too. #publicity” while fan @FerrariBacardi added, “Jay-Z vs. Lil Wayne is gonna be awesome. Even if its only sub dissing... We gotta catch all that.”

Fans have been going back and forth over the supposed dis; with some openly wondering what Jay will say in return while others are thinking the move is calculated. Whatever the case, this makes Lil Wayne’s upcoming August 29 release of Tha Carter IV even more intriguing as he continues to climb his way back to the top of the Hip Hop mountain. Stay tuned as this story will certainly develop. Culled from MTV

Motown Hitmaker Nick Ashford Dies

2011-08-22T23:42:00.000-05:00

Nick Ashford wrote the songs that made a whole lot of the world sing.
The Motown hitmaker, who along with wife Valerie Simpson was responsible for tunes like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "I'm Every Woman," died Monday at a New York City hospital after a bout with throat cancer. He was 70.

Ashford & Simpson—as they are referred to in the Songwriting Hall of Fame—met in 1963 at a church in Harlem and started writing songs together for a none-too-shabby list of up-and-comers such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.
The couple joined Berry Gordy's Motown Records in 1966 and wrote a series of hits for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrelle, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing."
Over the years, Ashford and Simpson—who also recorded and performed together—also wrote for Gladys Knight & the Pips, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Chaka Khan, the Supremes and Diana Ross on her own.
A decade into their highly successful collaboration, Ashford and Simpson tied the knot in 1974 and cut the album Gimme Somethin' Real, as well as a succession of popular singles. Their biggest hit together, "Solid," was released in 1984.
Among their pile of hits, Ashford and Simpson have a songwriting credit on Amy Winehouse's Back to Black for "Tears Dry on Their Own," which is styled after "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."
Ashford is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years and their two daughters, Nicole and Asia. Culled from E Online

Lil Wayne Needs 9 Stitches for 'Gnarly Gash' From Skateboarding Accident

2011-08-22T11:27:00.002-05:00

ST. LOUIS -- Lil Wayne said Monday he is recovering after gashing his head at a St. Louis-area skateboard park.

The 28-year-old rapper whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. was in suburban St. Louis Sunday for a performance at the outdoor Verizon Amphitheatre. KTVI-TV reported that Lil Wayne, accompanied by a large entourage, showed up Sunday at DePaul Health Center's emergency room.

Hospital spokeswoman Jamie Newell said she could not confirm Lil Wayne was at the hospital, citing privacy laws. But Lil Wayne wrote about it on his Twitter account.

"The Lou was good but I busted my ... head at the sk8park! 9stitches! Gnarly gash over my left eye! Luv the people," he wrote.

Messages left with Lil Wayne's management on Monday were not returned. Details about how he was hurt, and where, were not immediately available.

Lil Wayne is about to release his new album, "The Carter IV." A previous album, "The Carter III," was the best-selling album of 2008 and the Grammy Award winner for best rap album of that year. In 2010, he served time in a New York jail after pleading guilty to a weapons charge.

"The Carter IV" will be released digitally after Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards, at which Lil Wayne will perform. The album, which features collaborations with Drake, Cory Gunz, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes and others, will be in stores on Aug 29. Culled from Huffingtonpost

Daniel Radcliffe says he wants to marry girlfriend

2011-08-21T11:29:00.001-05:00

Daniel Radcliffe reportedly wants to marry his girlfriend, Rosanne Coker.
The 'Harry Potter' star's secret love was only revealed on Friday - although they have been dating for a year - and Daniel, 22, is already said to have his sights set on marriage.
A friend told The Sun newspaper: "They're crazy about each other. Dan wants to marry her."
While Daniel met Rosanne on the set of 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince', where she was working as a runner, in 2007 she is said to have made him wait until the end of shooting the final film in the series, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2', last year before she would date him.

Another source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Dan really fell for Rosie in a big way. He was doing all the chasing and Rosie made him sweat. She was always attracted to him but wanted to keep their on-set relationship as strictly business – much to Dan's dismay.
"But he agreed and realised that Rosie was worth holding out for."
Daniel has already proved a hit with 22-year-old Rosanne's parents, and her father, Malcolm – a painter and decorator – has praised him as a "lovely" guy.
He said: "I don't want to say too much really as they would really prefer to keep things quiet.
"I have met Daniel and he is a lovely guy. I'm just really happy for Rosanne and as long as she is happy that is all that matters to me."
Before Roseanne, Daniel had dated Irish actress Laura O'Toole and was recently linked to Olive Uniacke. Culled from CTV News

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries Are Married!

2011-08-21T10:42:00.001-05:00

"We are officially married!" beautiful bride Kim Kardashian – now happily wed to Kris Humphries – posted on her Celebuzz site after Saturday night's ceremony before some 450 guests at a lavish estate in Montecito, Calif.
Called for 6 p.m., the ceremony actually got underway at 6:37, and lasted about 30 minutes, reports E! News.

"I so wish my dad could be here today to walk me down the aisle, But I know in a way he is here, and I feel his loving presence all around me. I love and miss you, dad," read Kim's message in a printed program handed to guests. The words paid tribute to her late father, attorney Robert Kardashian. Also remembered were Kris's grandparents.
The Humphries family's pastor, Joel Johnson, officiated the traditional Christian service.
Humphries, as he waited for Kim at the altar, was overheard saying, "I'm nervous," though a few deep breaths seemed to restore his confidence.
Finally, stepfather Bruce Jenner walked Kim down the aisle. Culled from People

Lady Gaga Goes Surfing in Mexico

2011-08-20T08:04:00.000-05:00

Lady Gaga got herself a real Mexican Wave during a visit to the North American nation.

The superstar singer, 25, was pictured learning to surf with some friends this week and she appeared to take to it like a duck to water in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, managed to maintain her footing while riding a medium sized wave gliding through the water and keeping her balance in elegant style.

The Bad Romance star wore a small wetsuit while out on the water, but soon decided to sack it off and switch to a miniscule two piece black bikini.
She then returned to the water in her tiny swimwear, which appeared to give her more room for maneuver and would have pleased her large army of admirers.
It certainly sexed up an otherwise run of the mill day of surfing at the Mexican beach.

Eli Manning saying he's as good as Tom Brady was factually wrong, but the right thing to say

2011-08-18T21:46:00.000-05:00

New York Giants' Quarterback Eli Manning was a trending topic on Twitter yesterday after it was revealed that he considers himself to be a Top Five Quarterback and in the same class as three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. Unfortunately for Manning, his sudden rise to the top of Twitter's ranks was not due to an outpour of support for his statement. Rather, football fans and Brady enthusiasts alike attacked Manning for being delusional.

A lot of sports writers have come to Manning's defense asking readers what they think Manning should have said when asked by New York radio station ESPN 1050 who else he would put in Tom Brady's class. If he omits himself, what does that say about his confidence? As a 49ers fan, I'd laugh my butt of if Alex Smith (ugh) compared himself to an elite quarterback, but part of me would at least be relieved he had some conviction in his ability to play. (At least someone would!) And honestly, it's not even fair to bring a third-rate QB like Alex Smith up in this conversation, since the only thing Smith and Manning have in common is that they were both first round draft picks.

But that's the thing. Eli Manning was a first round draft pick. He did help the Giants make it to the playoffs in four of his seven seasons as a full-time starter. He was fourth in touchdown passes last season (31). And, OH RIGHT: With the help of his team, he did take Tom Brady and the unbeatable Patriots down in Super Bowl XLII.

When Eli Manning was asked which other quarterbacks he would put in Tom Brady's class, he was being set up to fail. Personally, I commend him for saying what he did. For the sake of NY Giants' fans, I hope he actually believes it, and not just that he misunderstood the question, like this tweet implies. Culled from CBS News

Redbox Tests Price Increases in Some Markets By 20 Percent

2011-08-18T03:16:00.007-05:00

Movie rental kiosk company Redbox has raised DVD rental rates in Austin, Texas and Portland, Oregon by as much as 20% per night.

In these markets, DVD movie rentals are now $1.15 or $1.20 per night, versus the standard $1 per night in most regions. This increase comes a month after Netflix separated its streaming and rental subscriptions, raising prices by 60% in the process.

As Variety notes, Redbox has already been testing price increases in other markets, including Miami, San Diego and Modesto, California. Still, increasing prices in more areas seems to imply that these sorts of moves will soon be permanent. Updated to add: Redbox reached out and told us that they have no plans to make the price increases permanent.

Blu-ray and video games prices have not changed, though its unclear if those disc types will be immune from future price increases. Even at $1.20 per night, Redbox is still significantly cheaper than video-on-demand, iTunes rentals or Blockbuster.

A January study from the NPD Group estimated that Redbox accounted for 31% of the movie rental market.

Redbox is continuing to grow, with revenue up 34% in its most recent quarter. The company has also expanded its video game rental business, offering PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii games at 27,000 out of its 33,000 rental kiosks.

In spite of testing price hikes in some markets, Redbox is still offering customers discounts via Foursquare checkins until August 24.

Will an extra $0.20 put you off Redbox, or is it still cheap enough to keep using? Let us know in the comments. Culled from Mashable

'Flash Mob' Robs Maryland 7- 11 in less than 60 Seconds

2011-08-17T01:08:00.007-05:00

A flash mob invaded a 7-11 convenience store in Germantown, Md., early Saturday morning, stole all the snacks and candy they could get their hands on, then left the store as quickly as they came.

"It was anarchy for 60 seconds," said Montgomery County Police spokesman Paul Starks. "We've counted at least 28 individuals we can see on the surveillance tape." Starks said police suspect the mob was organized using social media like Facebook or Twitter.

The term flash mob was first used to describe impromptu gatherings of people to sing or dance in a public space, alerted by text, email or Twitter, but the Germantown incident is just the latest in a summer when flash mobs have turned from spontaneous, fun events to outright felony.

On July 4 in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, a group of 1,000 youths organized through social networking sites to fight and disrupt an event. In Washington, D.C., a flash mob robbed a high-end clothing store earlier this summer.

On August 5, a flash mob stormed the fairgrounds at the Wisconsin state fair in Milwaukee. "My mom just got attacked by a flash mob," said a caller to 911. "Punched in the face for no reason. We need emergency help right away."

According to Brad Garrett, a former FBI special agent and now an ABC News consultant, "crowd mentality" takes over once a group has been gathered by cell phone. "People who would not otherwise rob or steal end up doing just that."

"These incidents can turn violent, they can injure customers, they can damage the store and then there's the financial losses the retailers suffer," said Joe La Rocca, spokesperson for the National Retail Federation. The NRF estimates that about one in ten stores has been the victim of a of a flash mob invastion and robbery. In most cases, by the time the police arrive, the mob is long gone, making for a long arduous process to identify and prosecute the culprits.

In Germantown, Md., police spokesman Starks says the store clerk pressed the silent alarm when he belatedly realized there was a robbery in progress, and a police cruiser responded in under a minute. But by then, the mob was gone.

Local school officials and merchants are working with the police to identify the suspect caught on tape, Starks said. "The surveillance video is very clear, and we already have a good idea of who some of these people are," he said.

"We are going after them all, and if we can identify the ringleaders, they are going to face some serious charges," Starks said. Culled from ABCNews

Lady GaGa Reveals Her Many Faces in Official 'You and I' Music Video

2011-08-16T22:40:00.001-05:00

Lady GaGa fights off the leak of her "You and I" music video. Initially set to make its way out this coming Thursday, August 18, the clip came out earlier by Tuesday afternoon, much to her dismay. "F*** THURSDAY," she tweeted a few hours later before rushing to release the official one.

Filmed in a corn field and a barn somewhere in Nebraska, the video shows the many faces of the Mother Monster including her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, and her mermaid self, Yuyi. "You must love all + every part of me, as must I, for this complex + incomprehensible force to be true," she wrote on Twitter.

"The [video is about the] idea that when you're away from someone you love, it's torture," she once said. "I knew I wanted the video to be about me sprinting back and walking hundreds of thousands of miles [ from New York City to Nebraska] to get him back."

"I'm walking with no luggage and no nothing and it's just me and my ankles are bleeding a little bit and there's grass stuck in my shoes and I've got this outfit on and it's real sort of New York clothing and I'm sprinting." Culled from AceShowBiz
