I haven't posted on this blog much since she came mostly due to the uphill battle we have been fighting just to keep her safe and healthy.

We had to hire a lawyer and thankfully, we won the fight to keep her but now we have to pay the lawyer bills before the adoption can be finalized.

Valentine Cards with Kids!

I cannot believe it's been 10 months since I last blogged! I had no idea I would be gone so long. We've had complication after complication with the adoption but thankfully it looks like it's finally moving forward and will be over soon!

I have missed blogging so much but I have LOVED having time with my daughter and learning to be a Mom.

Here is a Valentine's Craft we did this week. I saw the idea somewhere but I have no idea where, I wish I could give them credit! Maybe pinterest?

Here's my girl so proud of the cards we made!

Here are the steps:

1. Trace and cut out your child's hand. Afterwards bend the middle two fingers down to make the "I Love You" sign.

2. Take some scrapbook paper and cut to the size of a premade white card (or make a card from white cardstock, I just happened to have blank ones on hand) and glue it to the front.

3. While I was cutting the paper for the front of our cards, I had my daughter color on the hands to add her touch to it. I wrote "I Love You" on it and stuck it on with a pop dot so it stood out a little.

4. While I was sticking the hands on the cards I had my daughter put conversation heart foam stickers on the inside which was by far her favorite part. She LOVES those foam stickers! I got them at Target in the dollar section.

5. After she was done with her foam stickers, I wrote "Happy Valentine's Day" inside the card where ever I could fit it :)

It was super easy and turned out cute. I know the Grandparents will love seeing her little coloring on the hand as well.

Taken the morning after she came home, I bought this outfit for her 8 months ago and it was so exciting to finally see her in it!!

Yes you read that right, I am a Mother!

Let's all take a minute and just scream with joy okay? EEEEEK!!!

Remember I told you that I was going on a long vacation in March? Well I thought that I was.

3 days before I was going to leave for 2 1/2 weeks I got a call that I had pretty much given up on.

It was asking if we were still interested in taking a little girl named Cheyenne (age 22 months) out of foster care. I had a really bad fever at the time and I thought I was hallucinating. I mean really, I just sat there and went "Uh huh....".

We have been fighting for this child for MONTHS in court to be placed with us. We are distant family members and the birth mother wanted her with us too. We would go to court once a month and nothing would get accomplished and we would get more and more discouraged. Getting this phone call was a miracle, pure and simple. While still internally freaking out (but trying not to act like it)

I learned that she could be placed with us in a week!! I called people screaming and could hardly even tell them that Cheyenne was finally coming home! One person literally thought that my house was on fire or some other horrifying thing had happened. :)

Her first moments home were spent rocking with Mom. She took a little nap on my shoulder and woke up happy! I was in heaven.

So after having one week to get our house together for our insta-toddler, we were as ready as we were ever going to be! She came on a Monday at 3:35 and has been here for one month now. Without a doubt it has been the best month of our lives. We are so happy we walk around with perma-grins on our faces!

A lot of people ask us how she adjusted to coming to live with us, so I thought ya'll might be wondering too. She has adjusted more wonderfully than we could have ever dreamed!! I fully expected her to cry for weeks and just be very sad (totally understandable) but she was not at all! She is the happiest little girl I have ever met! She very very rarely cries and when she does it's for a good reason. She sleeps through the night perfectly, goes down for a nap without a fuss, eats anything you give her and says "Thank You" every.single.time. you give her something. She speaks REALLY well for her age which is great because we can communicate! I could go on and on about her. She is just so much fun!

One of my favorite things to do is buy an ugly picture and then turn it into something cute!

I purchased the frame below for less than a dollar after the 4th of July at Joann's....

With a little help from my eCraft (ok a lot of help!) I turned it into this....

I love the birds for spring and the bright colors! The eCraft cut my scallop circle and birds so cleanly I couldn't believe it!

Guest Post: Handy Helper Tutorial with Lacey!

Hi y’all! I am thrilled to be guest-hosting again for Auntie Lolo’s Crafts today. I am Lacey Camp, a life-long crafter, who has now become a blog and Pinterest addict! I love to do all kinds of needlework. I use this handy helper just about every day. Not only does this keep my embroidery scissors in sight and close by but I use the pouch to catch snippets from the thread that I am constantly cutting. I have also been known to pack my floss and other embroidery aids inside the pouch when going on a trip.

Emily, my daughter, is wearing the finished product here. You can shorten your ribbon; however, I like it this long so that I can easily grab my scissors while sewing.

Supplies:

one sheet of embossed felt (you can make two handy helpers with this!)

some Velcro

38” of ribbon

Scissors

This is a very easy craft. You can glue everything together or you can sew it together. If you will cut the embossed felt in two length-wise, you will have enough left to make another helper! Let’s begin by cutting your felt in two. Now cut 2-1/2” off the end. When you fold the felt piece in half, the folded part will be the bottom of your helper. All you need to do now is sew the sides and attach the ribbon.

I sew the Velcro to the end of the ribbon first. Begin by folding your ribbon back just a tiny bit (to keep it from fraying). You will do this on the unprinted side of the ribbon. Now attach the soft part of Velcro over the folded ribbon (the Velcro should overlap the fold of the ribbon). Position the tacky end of the Velcro 1” down the ribbon from the soft end of the Velcro. You need that inch so that your scissors’ handle will easily hang between these two pieces of Velcro.

Taking the other end of the ribbon, fold your ribbon back again at the very top to keep it from fraying. Attach that end of the ribbon to the back inside of the pouch. Since my ribbon is only printed on one side, it is important here to have the pretty side facing you as you sew it onto the inside of the pouch. If you choose a regular grosgrain ribbon without a print, you won’t have to worry about how it hangs. Emily and I fell in love with this giraffe ribbon once we saw how it matched the giraffe-y pattern on the embossed felt. We found them both at Michael’s. This is how your ribbon should look once it’s attached to the pouch. Note that the ribbon on the pouch has been attached to the back inside of the pouch.

Once your ribbon is attached, you are ready to finish the pouch. Sew both sides together with the felt wrong sides out. Once you are finished with that, turn the felt right side out and iron the pouch so that your pouch is flat. Be sure to put another cloth on top of the felt when ironing. If you have any edges sticking out of the top of the pouch, trim them at an angle and they will lie flat.

Attach some embroidery scissors and you are ready to go! You could embellish the outside of the pouch if desired. I thread my spare needles through the outside front of mine so that I can always find something to sew with.

Guest Post: The Winthrop Chronicles favorite projects!

Hey guys! I'm Sarah from The Winthrop Chronicles and I'm so happy to be guest blogging here while Auntie Lolo is on vacation. She has so many amazing ideas and projects, so I am so glad she asked me to write up a little post about some of my favorite projects.

Here are some of the most viewed projects from my blog I hope you enjoy!

Diy tulip skirt. I wanted a skirt this color, but just couldn't find one, so I braved the sewing machine and decided to make one.

I love making scarves. This is an infinity scarf tutorial, it was pretty easy to make, so easy that I started selling them at my esty shop. Now I just have to get some lighter scarf material for the summer weather.

As I went through my clothes boxes in the attic, I found a lot of t-shirts. Instead of donating them all, I used some to make these little baby hats. It's a really easy way to up cycle some of your old clothing.

While perusing Michael's I found these darling wood frames. I knew I had to have one. Here is a hair bow holder that I made with the frame, some chicken wire and a piece of ribbon.

This is a really easy way to personalize some art work in your home, by using a thrifted picture frame, some left over scrap book paper, scrap material and wooden letters.

I love baking cakes, and wanted some more cake plates. Instead of buying them, I made some. I used {mostly} thrifted items to make them.

When I was making over my daughter's room, I wanted to put up a picture of her on the wall. I printed off a picture of her and glued it to a piece of wood and then sanded it down a little to make this photo on wood wall hanging.

This is one of the first things I made for my baby girl. I needed a shirt to match some black leggings I bought her and so I came up with the pleated peasant shirt. It's so fun seeing her in clothes that I actually made.

I love buying cute clothes for my kids, but sometimes can't get myself to buy expensive things that I know will just end up stained or ripped. I decided to up grade some of their clothing by making simple changes like adding a leather patch on the elbows and new buttons. Now they can look like J Crew clothes at the price of Old Navy.

These flower pins are some of my new favorite things. I make them to attach to a headband, also as a sweater pin and also as a scarf pin. They are such a cute accessory and I seriously can't have enough!

Guest Post: Monogram Pillow Tutorial from The Winthrop Chronicles

Hi, I'm Sarah from The Winthrop Chronicles so happy to be here on Auntie Lolo's. I am in the process of changing my baby's nursery into a little girls room. So I am happy to share one of my projects for that room with all of you!

This is the first of two pillows I made, it is a monogram pillow. It was pretty easy and quick.

To make:

first. I bought a pillow from Jo Ann's they were on sale so I stocked up. I got it for about $4. Also, you need some felt (just enough to cover the pillow) and the pom pom ribbon (enough to go around the outside).

second. Cut the back two panels, I like to make my pillows this way because it's super easy and you can just pull off the pillowcase when ever you want. Make sure that there is about 2 to 3 inches of overlay, meaning that they are 2 to 3 inches wider than you actually need, so that when the pillow is in it, you still don't see the pillow.

{this is what the back will look like done, you leave the middle seam un sewn so that you can take out the pillow if you need to}

third. Cut your front panel and your letter. I just free handed the letter and cut it out.

fourth. Using a top stitch, sew the letter on to the front panel.

fifth. To sew the pillow together and sew the pom pom ribbon on, pin the fabric right side to the right side, with the pom pom ribbon on the inside. You can kind of see in the picture below that the pom pom ribbon is inside the pillow and the pillow is inside out. Just sew it then flip it right side out and you're done!

Guest Post: Easter Button Art with Lacey!

Hi y’all! I am thrilled to be guest-hosting again for Auntie Lolo’s Crafts today. I am Lacey Camp, a life-long crafter, who has now become a blog and Pinterest addict! I have always been inspired by Lois’ button crafts here on Auntie Lolo Crafts! When trying to come up with a new tutorial for a button craft, I looked back at her Easter craft from last year, A Button Egg and Stuffed Bunnies. I can’t improve upon her button egg tutorial or craft and I’m not trying to. I’ve decided to do homage to the Queen of Button Crafts – Lois! When trying to come up with an idea, I was inspired by the felt bunnies she made last year to stand beside her Easter egg. I used the template from those bunnies – originating at Sandy’s Creations, I reduced it on my copier, as seen by the dimensions in the template below.

I found all my supplies at JoAnn’s except for the frames. I always buy my frames at Hobby Lobby. While you can sew your project onto any kind of fabric, I prefer using embossed felt which can be found at all the craft stores right along with regular felt sheets. Most of the buttons for my bunny came from my Grandmother’s old buttons. As a matter of fact, her covered coat button is in the middle of the bottom of the bunny’s body. I remember Grandmother wearing that coat! That memory alone makes this bunny extra special to me! I would really urge you to use all different shades of brown for your bunny in order for it to have a good dimension. You’ll notice that I even have some light tan buttons with dark brown edges on them as well. The chocolate browns to the light tans are what will give your bunny a life of its own.

I wanted my bunny to fit into a 5x7 frame because I had already done a button egg to stand alongside it in another 5x7 frame. Since I had already made my egg, I used it to figure out the scale of the bunny.

I then placed my bunny template onto my embossed felt and, using my disappearing ink marker, I traced the template. Next, I glued down my first row of buttons. I have tried hot glue and about burned my fingers off (plus it left too much on the button and made it hard to sew through the holes later on). After experimenting, I have found that E6000 glue works much better for me. I squirt out a glob onto a paper plate then use a toothpick to glue a TINY bit to the button - just enough on the edge to hold it down so that I can sew through it later. The E6000 is not instant but it’s very fast and I prefer it. I don’t normally put bows onto my button crafts but I decided this chocolate bunny needed to have one around its neck. Since I wanted it to literally tie around its neck, I actually placed the bow before I glued the buttons so that I would wind up with the look that I was going for.

Once you have your primary row of buttons and the shape that you desire, there is no reason to glue anymore. I just start filling in the holes until I am happy with the finished product. I sew my buttons on with a 3-strand ply of embroidery floss. I usually use contrasting colors so that the thread will show. I decided to just stick with a chocolate for this bunny. I also decided that, since I wanted these two 5x7s as a grouping, I needed to “marry” them so I sewed a matching bow to the front of my egg. What do you think?

Here is my St. Patrick’s Day shamrock. I had some trouble with the felt wrinkling so I went back to Lois’ button egg tutorial and used her method to stretch my felt and hold it better. This is the only button craft I have done so far that required that step. I had no problem stretching the others. The embossed felt has a nice weight of its own and, until this shamrock, has been able to bear the weight of the buttons.

I struggled with my shamrock shape until my daughter, Emily, showed me the way she had done hers. She literally shaped three small hearts with her hands then added the stem! Emily and I have done all of our button crafts together and have had a great time experimenting with different shapes and sizes. Even though we do them together, they never look the same. That’s one of the many things I love about crafting!

Finally, here is my Valentine’s Day heart. I used three different colors of embroidery floss to sew on these buttons as I used pink to red buttons and felt I needed the different contrasting threads on them. I also decided to put one silver heart button off-center to the right, just for a nice bit of drama. Emily did her heart in pink, red and white then she framed it in white. Hers had a totally different look. Mine looks a bit Victorian in the glossy black frame. Emily’s looked far sweeter in a modern white frame. Guest Post: A Behind the Scenes Look at Auntie Lolo Crafts

Everybody’s heard the old saying, “Behind every good man, there’s a great woman.” Well there’s also a slightly less well known saying that goes, “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” If you ask me I think the second is more fitting when it comes to Auntie Lolo. Truthfully this woman doesn’t need much support but when my wife called for guest posts I have to admit I secretly wanted to be picked. Part of it is because it’s a creative outlet for me to write. Another part wanted to let you all in on a behind the scenes look at the Auntie Lolo Craft world.

When I met Auntie Lolo all those many years ago she had one hobby that I was made immediately aware of – she was a scrapbook-a-holic. Naturally I did what every guy does when trying to impress a woman . . . I tried scrapbooking. (There I said it and it feels good!!!!) I failed miserably. I found her best friend and enlisted her help to save my futile attempt at a present for my then girlfriend. It was then that I learned the real talent it takes to be crafty and creative and to take an everyday object and turn it into something presentable. I would later make one more attempt at scrapbooking and take some of the honeymoon photos from our trip to Vegas and turn them into a memory. Let’s just leave it at you can tell which pages I did and which ones Auntie Lolo has done.

Occasionally I’m called in as a consultant but let’s be honest . . . . it’s more out of pity than actual necessity. While we were dating she had a class where she had to put a vistor’s guide together for a foreign country. She chose where I served my mission for the LDS Church – Nicaragua. What did I do to help? I got to draw the little girl (Maria) who was to be the reader’s guide. It was cute and crafty, and it got her an “A”. Let’s look at another case in point: Last Christmas our nieces and nephews asked for stuffed owls that my wife sews out of felt. The picture on the left is her rendition; the one on the right is mine!

As you can see hers is much better. Mine was a feeble attempt at snow camouflage for our 12 year old nephew so his didn’t seem so girly. Not my best work. About the only positive thing I contribute to the Auntie Lolo Craft world is paint. That’s right . . . . paint. Since I work for Glidden we have an abundance of paint at our house – in all sheens and shades of every color imaginable. So all the cool colors you see of painted projects – that’s all me!!!!

So for what it’s worth I will say this. When I first met Auntie Lolo she wasn’t a mega-superstar crafter. She wasn’t even a crafter – in fact the only thing she did was scrapbook. But to be her support during this journey and watch her evolve and has been an unique adventure. I’ve seen her transform from a grain of sand into a crafting pearl. She’s the epitome of what it means to develop one’s talents – take nothing and turn it into something. Heck, I’ve even learned some things. Since being married to Auntie Lolo I’ve learned to sew, cut fabric, and even use the Cricut machine – although I still need a guiding hand like a two year old learning to color for the first time. But it’s an adventure nonetheless. So for all the husbands and significant others of theses crafters, I salute you fellow bicycles for fish. Your job is important. Even if all you do is supply the paint.

Guest Post: How to Make an Ironing Board Cover

Hi, I'm Cynthia from Dream Quilt Create.

Today, I will show you how I made a beautiful ironing board cover. I got the idea from "I Have to Say".

This is my lovely ironing board cover. All my covers get these nasty brown stains. I think it is from using spray starch. Does that happen to you?

I went to JoAnn's and bought three pieces of Denyse Schmidt fabric. My ironing board measures 18" wide by 48 l/2" long. I bought 5/8 yard (22.5") of the first fabric (goes on the pointy end), 1/4 yard (9") of the middle fabric and 1 yard of the third fabric (goes on the end). I also bought 4 l/3 yards of 7/32" cording which is found in the upholstery section.

Measure your ironing board and do the calculations. I used a l/2" seam allowance and 4" extra all around the ironing board. It is always better to have a little bit extra than not enough.

Here are my three fabrics sewn together. The selvages are on the sides, I sewed the cut edges together.

I laid the sewn piece of fabric on the floor, right side down. Then I put the ironing board on top of the fabric and traced 4" all the way around with a blue pencil. It doesn't have to be extremely accurate.

Then I cut all the way around on the blue dashed lines that I drew.

Guess what? I have extra fabric for my stash!

Measure l/2" all the way around and press.

Zigzag close to the edge, all the way around. Don't worry that there are crinkles around the curves. This won't matter a bit.

Turn zigzagged seam under 3/4" and press all the way around. There will be a few more crinkles this time, but the seam will be under the ironing board and won't show.

Stitch this seam all the way around with a straight stitch, close to the edge, leaving a 2" opening at the end (the square end) of your ironing board cover.

I pinned a safety pin to the end of the cording. Make sure your pin takes a good bite into the cording, or it might slip out when you are pulling it through the casing. Push the safety pin through the 2" opening of your casing, at the end of the cover. It will take a while, but carefully ease the safety pin with the cording, all the way around the ironing board cover.

Lay your ironing board cover on the floor, right side down. Center the ironing board on top of it.

Pull the cording sideways, easing the fullness around the ironing board. Tie the cord and then tie a bow. You can tuck the cording under the cover so that it doesn't hang down.

Now you have an awesome redesigned ironing board cover. This is the prettiest ironing board cover I have ever had! It was so easy that I could even have a new cover for every season. Not really, that sounds a little bit fussy to me........and with the prints, those nasty stains might not show up as much.

This was a really easy project, easy enough for a beginner sewer :)

Guest Post: Scissor Holder

Hi y’all! I am thrilled to be guest-hosting again for Auntie Lolo’s Crafts today. I am Lacey Camp, a life-long crafter, who has now become a blog and Pinterest addict! Today, we are going to make a scissors holder. This is a great way to use up some of your scraps for embellishments! I used to make these years and years ago when I had a craft booth and they sold very quickly! I hope that you’ll enjoy making them as well.

Supplies:

glue gun

scissors

one potholder, loop MUST be in the corner of the potholder, not the middle

lace, multiply the sides of your potholder by 3 for the length (mine is 28”)

ribbon and/or buttons to embellish - I discovered my buttons at WalMart!

Basically, you can put anything you want on your potholder. It’s totally your preference. I am making this scissors holder for my future craft room (yes, I even have a board set up on Pinterest just for that room!). http://pinterest.com/laceydcamp/ I am hoping to have my craft room done this summer!

For instructions’ sake, please position your potholder as a diamond at all times, with the loop at the very top. This is your hanging loop and will keep you in perspective during this tutorial. Take your left corner and fold it straight across the potholder towards the middle (until the bottom corner is folded as well). This is the inside of your scissors holder and it is the only place we will not embellish. When you fold the right corner back over it, you will see the basic design. It should look like an ice cream cone. You can glue your potholder together now. Please note that I am aware you can see my glue at the tip. I tend to overdo adhesives but at least I don’t sniff them, right? Anyway, it won’t show in just a minute, I promise.

To begin to embellish your scissors holder, turn your potholder over to the back side. You will begin to glue on your lace at the bottom of the cone. I wrap my lace around the bottom just a tad so I know it will stick.

I like the eyelet on my potholder and didn’t mind the binding at the top to show; hence, I glued mine on top. (If I hadn’t liked it, I would have glued it beneath the edge of the potholder.) You should be able to use one length of lace to glue onto the entire front of the scissors holder. You will start at the back and glue from the bottom of the diamond up to the first corner, making a nice turn there. Don’t cut your lace, use it in one long piece. You can easily maneuver it.

Once you have finished attaching your lace to the right front of the cone, you will need to decide how you want to finish your scissors holder. Do you want your lace to cover the top edge of the potholder? I do because I don’t necessarily want everyone to realize it IS a potholder. This also leaves your hanging loop behind your lace so it’s easy to access. If that’s the look you want, you will have to jump your lace at the very edge of the cone then continue it again inside the lip of the cone down to the front left side, jumping it again to cover the last of the front of the cone. You can tell in this photo that I glue on one side before jumping it to the next side. Glue well so it will hold. When you are finishing the front left of the cone, note that you have to fold your lace onto itself to twist it upwards at the front to match the other side.

I felt my scissors holder still looked a little unfinished. I tied a bow with three lengths of white ribbon and glued it on to the front center. I then took my largest daisy button and glued it on top of the knot of the bow. Daisies are my favorite flower so I decided I needed a little bit more! I strung three more buttons onto the end of the bow and knotted right below where I wanted them to hang. What do you think? I didn’t choose the daisy buttons so that the orange matches my good scissors but, hey, it looks like I did, doesn’t it? Just saying……………..

Guest Post: Heirloom Children's Blessing Gown's

Hello, my name is Cynthia from Dream Quilt Create. I am thrilled to be a guest on Auntie Lolo's blog. I have known Lois since she was a little girl. She is my daughter Lindsay's best friend, and like a "fourth" daughter to me. She once saved my youngest child from our burning house and took him to a drug dealer's house for safety :) That is a long, long, exciting story for another time........

I learned how to sew heirloom children's clothing by machine, in 1986. When I learned I would soon be a grandmother, I thought it would be great to sew each of them an heirloom gown for their blessing. The idea was that they could pass it down to their first child and so on. Great care is taken in choosing heirloom materials that will endure the years.

I bought this book for inspiration, and for a glossary of techniques, including a basic pattern.

Bridger was our first grandchild, a boy. That didn't deter me, because there are plenty of patterns available for boys. I decided on this one. The sleeves weren't puffy for a boy, it had a cuff at the bottom of the sleeve. My daughter (Lindsay) chose a champagne colored Swiss Nelona fabric. I smocked the bodice in an antique brown thread, and the lace trim on the collar and sleeve cuff was a little l/4" crochet trim. The romper has so many gathers, that it almost looks like a dress!

Our next grandchild was a girl named Kennedy. Her mom (Lindsay) chose a white Swiss Nelona, with antique beige colored thread for embroidery, champagne lace, and peach embroidered flowers with sage green flowers. White silk satin ribbon was chosen for the bonnet and beading on the dress. Lindsay did some of the embroidery for the dress to help me out, since there was so much on the front and the back. Little seed pearls were added on the decorative yoke and the bonnet as well.

The french lace is all inset. The little dotted lace is called entredeux. That is french for "between two". Entredeux is always placed between two pieces of lace or fabric. The entredeux is attached to the lace or fabric by a zig zag stitch. The needle must go through every hole of the lace, and it takes extreme concentration!

The bottom ruffle of the gown is all pin tucks.

This is the beading along the bottom of the sleeve.

This embroidery is all done on the back of the dress.

There is "puffing" inserted between some of the layers of lace. Puffing is a strip of fabric that is gathered on the top and the bottom and inserted in to the garment that way. The lace in the above photo, is 3 pieces that are attached together using an heirloom method.

Here is a photo of the embroidered initials that is customary to put on all the gowns. Kennedy Grace Nielson, the family name initial is always in the middle.

This is Kennedy in her bonnet and gown. Unfortunately, I don't have a good photo of her, but you can see all the yards of french heirloom lace.

Next, in the year 2010, we had four grandaughters born within seven months!!

Charlotte was born in April, 2010. Her mom, Lindsay, chose an off white Swiss cotton with off white french lace. The method I chose this time, was "shark's teeth". You sew 1/2" pin tucks, and clip them to the seam line at strategic places to form a design. You fold back the pleats at the clips and you have nice, pointy shark's teeth. Then you use a narrow zig zag stitch to encase the folded back tucks so they don't unravel when washed. Each section (between the inset lace) was sewn separately. I used yards and yards of lace and entredeux.

The lace trim ruffle along the front, edge of sleeve and double ruffles on the hem were antique laces. I was fortunate to buy some on ebay.

I forgot to mention that I always make a slip with the gown, the fabric is quite sheer. I sew inset lace or embroidery or pintucks on the yoke.

The finished dress. These gowns are quite long, about 12" to 18" or longer, below their feet.

Here is Charlotte in her gown and bonnet. Her bonnet is tied with antique gold, double sided silk satin ribbon. I love chubby baby hands!

Maisie was born in July, 2010. Her mom Rebecca, wanted an off white Swiss cotton with dusty rose embroidery and ribbon. I sewed two fancy bands. Fancy bands is a band of rows of french lace, painstakingly joined together.

I ran dusty rose silk satin ribbon through the beading (three rows), making sure not to tug too tight, not too loose, but just right. I embroidered the ribbon/flower motif all around the band, front, back and sides! I really enjoy hand work, I just have to make sure to give myself enough time to complete it. I set deadlines for myself which helps a lot. I can't be rushed doing these gowns, so I leave myself plenty of time.

I love embroidering the yoke of these gowns. I always put some little seed pearls in the embroidery.

I made the sleeves to match the skirt, with little verticle pintucks. It was my own design, each gown has something a little different that the previous one doesn't have.

The slip's yoke is pintucks with a swiss cotton insertion sandwiched with entredeux.

Neo was born in October, 2010. Her mother Mabulane, wanted an offwhite dress with antique lace and antique gold ribbon. Mabulane wanted the embroidery to be antique beige. I don't have any photos of the gown hanging up, so Neo is included in all of the photos!!

Neo's slip had 3 vertical rows of inset lace.

Mabulane was quite specific about how she wanted the lace. No ruffles, with a panel going down the center front. She didn't want the dress to be as long as the others, but long enough to cover up Neo's feet.

There is a wide band of antique lace, with an overlay of antique lace, over a long panel of pintucks. It is a replica of an antique dress in "Grandmother's Hope Chest".

Here are the initials embroidered on the back of the dress by the hem. Neo Kimberley Horst.

Here is a close up of the antique beige embroidery with seed pearls.

This is the best view of the whole gown. There is a ruffle of antique less on the hem, attached with a row of entredeux.

Our youngest grandchild Reagan, was born in November, 2010. Reagan's parents, Jordan and Kimalee, wanted a white dress similar to Charlotte's with shark's teeth, but no lace ruffles along the sides. Completely white, with white silk satin ribbon and white embroidery. They wanted alternating shark's teeth and puffing. It took me a couple of tries to get the shark's teeth centered. It is very mathmatical! Who said math skills you learned in high school won't ever be used in life?

The lace along the hem isn't ruffled and I love the look, it matches the tailored look of the gown. The entredeux and netting of the french lace shows up really well in this photo.

The white is so crisp and clean looking. I love it! I didn't get a photo of the embroidered initials on the back.

I always sew little 3/8" mother of pearl buttons on the back enclosure.

The yoke on the slip is pure pintucks.

The lace on the hem of the slip is different, it is a row of beading without ribbon and french lace.

The finished dress, almost looks like a wedding dress, doesn't it?

When I was making the first heirloom gown and my father in law saw how much time (and money!) was involved, he warned me that what I do for the first grandchild I must do for all the grandchildren. I couldn't imagine what he meant. Now after one romper and five gowns, I understand. As each bundle of joy arrives, I do my best to show my love and appreciation for each one. I am leaving a legacy to each of my grandchildren, hopefully making a mark in their lives :)

Bonneville Dialysis Center

This dialysis center took good care of my grandma. She was a patient there where she had to have dialysis treatments. My great-grandpa was a patient there, too. I know that they always were all taken care of and my grandma made some really good friends with some of the other patients. I appreciate the workers and the patients who were so good to my grandma and great-grandpa.

During dialysis, the patient's blood is cleaned from the waste, filling in for the job of healthy kidneys. The blood is cooled during this process, which makes it a kind of cold ordeal. Plus, it's a little boring. I have fleece blankets that I made for a display while working in a fabric shop, so I decided to finish them up and donate them. The blankets maybe look a little juvenile but I wanted to find a way to help and I don't really have the money for something more.

Anyway, if you have a chance and the resources, find the dialysis center nearest to you and donate small lap blankets, handheld games, or some good movies. Even taking them one blanket is one more than they had before you came!

When I got married my husband was so good to me that I have sort of gone downhill in my housekeeping skills. He took care of so much that now that we are both working full-time, I'm struggling to do my part. Furthermore, we have two kids who really think it's a good time when they get to help around the house. As a solution, I came up with the idea to make a magnet chore chart. I didn't have more than a few dollars to spend on this project so I really had to use what was already in the house. I am a big supporter of finding projects and crafts to do with the supplies you've already got. It makes it more unique and interesting. I don't have all of the fancy equipment, cute paper, stickers, etc., that I envy while I peruse blogs and Pinterest, but I still really like to make things once in a while.

~~Supplies I~~ ~~bought at the craft store chain~~ :( $34.01 - turns out I'm taking back $25 worth - I hate that place.

I couldn't help myself as I wandered through Jo-Anns looking for Mod Podge and magnets. The ribbon and stickers I found are so cute! I guess I was doing really bad math in my head because when I had to hand over my only cash to pay for items that didn't even fill ONE bag, I was disappointed. Maybe this was a good lesson because when I came home I was determined to not open anything I didn't have to.

I started with some stickers, scrap paper, and rub-ons.

Sometimes I avoid crafting because I don't have the patience to do a really good job. I take shortcuts wherever I can. I recommend them because guess what, no one can really afford the time or money to make every project look like the epitome of crafting. My feelings sometimes are hurt when I can't get perfect results but guess what .... I live. And furthermore, it's funner to do crafts without my OCD as a companion. Believe me, OCD tries to be my constant companion. While we're on the topic, some of my favorite stories are the ones where I screwed something up. Once while crocheting, what I thought was a dish cloth, I came up with some tube-shaped something with a ruffly bottom that happened to fit my sister's lava lamp PERFECTLY. See ... I can make stuff.

I used my Silhouette to cut the circles. I have no idea how to print and cut with that machine so I went old school and wrote the chores by hand.

I have a Silhouette (which I love) but I really don't know how to do anything but cut stuff out or print something. I'm certain the machine can do 100 times more than that but either way, it cut out these circles in a blink of the eye.

I glued the circles to magnets, and separated the chores into daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. When the chore is done, we can just flip over the magnet. Maybe in the future, I can add a cute check mark or something on the reverse side for when it's flipped. If I had thought about this project more in advance, I would have cut circles in another color for tasks the kids can do.

On the refrigerator.

I may have my husband drill a hole in the top to string a ribbon through. There's the perfect place to hang this right next to my pantry door. Until then, I slabbed on a few magnets and put it on the fridge. Really, whose fridge doesn't need more stuff on it, right? Am I right?

Anyway, there you have it.

easy peasy craft

I have a little story to share that will hopefully do one of two things. One, it helps me in my pursuit of sharing anything about myself (because I like to build big walls around myself). And two, maybe it will help someone get a little bit of a fresh perspective that might last at least five minutes. In the last year, I got married, became a mom of two, worked full time, and had more anxiety, stress, and even depression, than I have had in my whole life. My story is about how I learned to have realistic expectations, which in turn, lowered my anxiety and increased my faith.

I hate the term "instant family" or "instant mom" but in a short amount of time, I went from a single woman who loved to travel, had a modest disposable income, and felt confident at work and in the roles I had to ... a wife and mom of two. I hate the term instant because there was a process my brain had to go through (my neighbor calls it a paradigm shift) to choose to live a different type of life. It's what I wanted but I was scared. And nervous. And excited.

There are a few specific challenges unique to our family. The challenges aren't unique in and of themselves, but the combination, for us, is the challenge. My family of origin was a safe, stable, predictable home. So choosing this new family seemed out of my league. I knew that I KNEW the skills I needed, but I didn't know if I could USE the skills I needed. That was a lot of pressure to feel in addition to the kind folks who would encourage me by saying, "If anyone can do this, it's you." Enter: Anxiety. Welcome.

All of the expectations and ideas I had about being a wife and mother were overwhelming. There is not enough time in a day, or enough cells in my brain, to realistically do what I was imagining. But that didn't remove the pressure I felt to successfully do everything. Maybe I'm not the only one who learned the hard way that there are only 24 hours in one day. Maybe someone else knows, too, that adding one person (let alone three people) to your life, removes your ability to control exactly how your day goes. But, I still felt the pressure. Anxiety has now wiped his feet and stepped inside.

The pressure started building up in my body so much that my hair seriously started to thin out. How do you reduce your anxiety when you think you're going to wake up bald?! Well, my hair mostly stayed put but my emotions were out of control. I have cried more in the last 12 months than my whole life combined. The tears only added to my anxiety because what if my new husband would think I was nuts and this mess was going to taint our entire marriage? You know the most comfy chair in the house? Anxiety has settled right in it for a long visit.

Furthermore, when I felt the worst, my grandpa died. That family issue plus the strain I had already placed on myself did me in for about a week. I removed all of my obligations outside of my home for about ten days so I could regroup and move forward. It was humiliating, that me of all people would not have control of myself .... Anxiety and I are like blood brothers now.

During this time, I knew that I needed some education. I needed to understand what was normally to be expected when kids are involved with a new marriage, I needed to know what brains normally do with a marriage. And I needed to figure out why I couldn't be the boss of my emotions and why my brain was on sabbatical. So, I went to a counselor who was the right fit for me. She helped me use my own brain to figure out what to do because unbeknownst to me, my brain was here the whole time. What worked for me was a little bit of cognitive therapy.

My family physician also recommended that I take a dose of an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant for a short time. He described it well when he said that while I work on getting the skills I want or need, the medication will take care of the biological part of the problem. He gave me a week to think about the medicine because I was hesitant when he first brought it up. The reason I went to see him was because I was sure my thyroid or something was out of whack and that's why I wasn't feeling good and was losing my hair, not because I was depressed. After a week of thinking about it, and after talking to my husband, I decided to take the medicine.

Since then, I have had to make a conscious effort to be realistic. The realistic expectations I have for others, I have to have for myself too. I could give my kids a safe and stable home, even with a routine, and still have fun in the mean time. My favorite way of doing this is teaching the kids about the silly little holidays and making it the theme of our night. For example, Groundhogs Day, Valentine's Day, and Leap Year. When things don't turn out now I "rename it." That's the advice I got from my friend's mom. My favorite piece of advice though is "Good Enough."

So what this all comes down to it ... It's okay to feel pressure. Anxiety will ebb and flow through life. But, I can CHOOSE to be happy all the while. My life overflows with blessings and they are worth the work.

Our first grader loves to read! We have a few leveled books but recently, we signed up on Readinga-z - Your Reading Resource Center, to get addition help. Now we have a pile of books that tip over, if they ever all get back into the same place. So, to add a little style to our stack, I designated a basket for all our leveled reading books.

Here's a disclaimer and a secret ...

The disclaimer is, I'm not a crafting expert.

The secret is, no matter what your skill level is, you can use what you have and make whatever you want. I used to procrastinate or avoid projects because I either didn't have the skill or the supplies to do what I wanted. And sometimes, when I try to recreate ideas I see, I get so disappointed that I can't do it just how I had imagined.

So even though I am a novice crafter, my advice is to not compare your project with the pictures of an experienced crafter. You see, I imagine my projects turning out so beautifully but my disappointment is unnecessary, because my family and friends don't get to see the pictures I based my project from. And, the most frequent comments I get are, "That's so cool that you made something like that." People appreciate effort more than anything else. And kids appreciate anything, really.

This little reading basket was born out of necessity and my brain. I don't like baskets very much, but our first grader loves that she has this all for herself!

Supplies I found in my basement - ribbon, glue, buttons, letters, cupcake holders, paint, a basket a gift came in, and one lonely piece of yellow paper.

Duck Tape comes in all kinds of colors and designs now, so I used this butterfly pattern to cover the staples on the books I printed.

Guest Post: Fabric Wreath with Lacey Camp

Hi y’all! I am thrilled to be guest-hosting for Auntie Lolo’s Crafts today. I am Lacey Camp, a life-long crafter, who has now become a blog and Pinterest addict! I hope you enjoy making this wreath with me. My friend, Margaret Hale, taught me how to do this years and years ago. I have since made these wreaths for every holiday!

Please be aware that my measurements are approximate. I use what I have and adjust as I go. To begin this craft, you will need a yard each of two coordinating fabrics. As you’ll see below, I have made more wreaths with just one fabric. However you make it, you will need about two yards of fabric. I use a rotary cutter to cut my fabric and my raffia; however, you could easily use scissors. If you do, I would suggest making a cardboard guide (as shown here) so that you are not measuring each strip of fabric. Again, no measurements have to be perfect, just close!

Supplies: One 12” metal ring (I find mine at JoAnne’s or Hobby Lobby), 2 yards of fabric (see above) and a lot of raffia. Cut your fabric and raffia into app 1-1/2”x7” strips.

Next, begin tying your fabric pieces and raffia to the wire ring. There is no rhyme or reason to this. Just tie it tight one time. With two fabrics, I tie a strip of each color then I combine about 6 strands of raffia and tie it next and repeat for a long, long time. You might want to be watching something good on tv for this step!

You will need to keep tying until you cannot slide anything on your wire ring anymore. The fuller your wreath, the prettier, so push your fabric together in order to get as much onto your wire ring as possible! Your wreath is going to look “flat” until you are finished. Once you are done, you can start fluffing the entire thing by twisting and turning the fabric and raffia. I have given you an example here (finish your wreath first though as it will flatten out from you working on it again). I just wanted to give you hope as you are working! ;-)

When you are finished, turn your wreath over to create a way to hang it. I use shower curtain rings or old key rings on mine so I just attach them directly to the wire ring; however, you could easily tie something onto the back as well.

Don’t you love the finished product??? These are so light-weight and easy to store. They are also wonderful to ship as gifts.

I have included other wreaths that I have made for other holidays so that you can see what this looks like when using only one material pattern, as in the Valentine and 4^th of July wreaths below. These wreaths are beautiful done in one or many different patterns. I personally prefer using the raffia as it gives another element or dimension to the wreath; however, they are pretty without it. It’s up to you!

Meet my eCraft!

I got something very exciting in the mail a few weeks ago from HSN! Her name is Ellie the pink eCraft :)

I don't know if anyone else does this but when I get something REALLY exciting in the mail, I take pictures of the whole opening process....

I was so excited to start playing with my new machine! Here are some cards I made the first time I used it.

It was so much fun! I love all the images available to use and that you can buy individual images that are very inexpensive instead of a whole cartridge.

The next thing I made with Ellie the eCraft was a home decor project that is also what I submitted as my entry to their design team. I hope I make it! Here is what I made...
