What is Aarogya Setu App?

India has been at the forefront

of efficient management of COVID-

19 pandemic with timely lockdown

since the last week of March

2020.The Ministry of Electronics

and IT of the Government of India

released India’s COVID-19 tracker

tool called the Aarogya Setu app

online. The Arogya Setu is

an application that tracks COVID-

19 cases around an individual to

keep him / her informed if they

have come across or are in close

contact with someone who has

tested positive while Covid -19

testing.

The Aarogya Setu application that

tracks COVID-19 cases around you

uses Bluetooth technology and

location of your phone, so you

need to keep both these switched

on at all times. The Arogya Setu

app online will alert you if you

unknowingly come in close contact

or proximity with someone who has

tested positive, even before you

develop any symptoms.

How to Download Aarogya Setu App

When the world’s second-most

populous country decided to shut

down its borders to contain and

manage the virus, rolling out the

app was an additional tool to

help in efficient contact

tracing.It is now the world’s

highest downloaded app. Within a

few days of its launch, there

have been over 10 million

downloads.

The app is available on Google

Play Store for Android

smartphones and the App Store for

iPhones for download. It is a

free app, which once downloaded

needs setting up. Select the

language of your choice as the

app is available in 11 languages

English and 10 Indian languages.

Remember to keep your Bluetooth

and location sharing ‘on’ at all

times.

How to Use Aarogya Setu App?

Here are the steps required to use the app:

After installing the app, you

will be asked to switch on

Bluetooth and location of your

mobile device.

You need to register with your

phone number to receive an OTP.

Enter the OTP and other details

such as gender, name, age and

profession.

You will then be asked about

any history of foreign travel in

the past 30 days. Remember to

fill in all details correctly and

honestly.

If you have a travel history,

your details will be matched with

the database of foreign

travellers who have tested

positive.

The app also asks you if you

are willing to volunteer in these

testing times. If you select

‘yes’, you will be asked to fill

a 20-question assessment form.

After installing the app and

completing the setup, your phone

is now ready to determine your

risk of infection. You will be

alerted if someone you came in

close proximity with unknowingly

tests positive later.

How to find if you

have coronavirus symptoms?

The Aarogya Setu App

benefits are plenty; the major

one being it helps in contact

tracing if an infected person

comes in contact with other

people. The app is a tool that

can help in fighting the

Coronavirus on an individual

level. It helps to determine if

you have been within six feet

from an infected person and sends

you a warning message.

There are some classic symptoms

of coronavirus the disease caused

by COVID-19 virus. These symptoms

appear 2-14 days after exposure

to the virus, and most patients

show :

Cough

Shortness of breath

And at least two or more of these

symptoms given below:

Fever

Chills

Muscle pain

Sore throat

Sudden loss of taste or smell

(Anosmia)

By entering these symptoms (if

you are suffering from any),

the Aarogya Setu app benefits not

just you and your family members

by signalling you to visit a

healthcare centre, but also those

who came in close proximity with

you.

What are the concerns around the

Aarogya Setu app?

The Arogya Setu COVID-19 app, no

doubt, is an effective pandemic

tracking tool that has been

developed in India. There are

many such tools being used by

other nations in the war against

this virus. However, there are a

few concerns and apprehensions

around it.

One of the main concerns is – the

app is people-dependent, and this

means it will work only if

everyone uses it the way it’s

meant to be. This primarily

involves people keeping their

Bluetooth and location sharing on

at all times and filling the

assessment form honestly and

truthfully.

Another concern of the Aarogya

setu COVID-19 app is privacy.

User data privacy is a grey area

under Indian law. According to

the privacy policy of the app, it

gives the user a colour coding of

green and yellow based on their

self-assessment.

Aarogya Setu app information of

those who fall in the yellow

category is uploaded to the

server while the details of those

in the green category are saved

on the app.

Apart from Aarogya setu app

collecting information, there are

switched-on as there is not much

pandemic may change the way

healthcare monitoring is done in

Across the country, many states have started the early phases of reopening but most corporations haven’t asked remote workers to return to the office just yet.

In fact, several tech companies such as Google and Facebook recently announced that they would continue to allow employees to work from home until 2021. Twitter is offering employees the additional option to work from home permanently, if their job allows for it. Virtual working appears to be a better and easier solution than reconfiguring office spaces to adhere to social distancing guidelines and managing the myriad of challenges that come with trying to ensure employees aren’t exposed to unnecessary risks.

While the timeline to return to the office for other industries and locations remains unclear, many people are slowly realizing that they’ll be working from home a lot longer than they had originally planned. If you are in this position, here are tips to help you assess and tweak your current routine to create a sustainable plan for working from home going forward.

Learn how to leave the office

Beyond social distancing, remote working has several benefits. Many people are more productive and efficient when working from home and it also provides the much-needed flexibility right now to manage increased household and caretaking tasks.

But there are downsides as well, such as an inability to set boundaries and check out of work at the end of the day. While it may have been common for you to leave the office and still engage in a few work-related tasks from home, having to leave a physical office space gave you a clear indication that the most demanding part of your workday was complete; leaving the office forced you to take a substantial break while you transitioned into your personal life.

Without the action of leaving the office, you may find yourself harboring the feeling that you are constantly available to your boss and teammates and you may end up working longer than you should.

One way to avoid this is by having a specific trigger that lets you know that it is time to leave the office. If you have a dedicated office space, you can try to limit work to that space only and not bring your work smartphone or laptop outside of that room in the evening.

Another option is to put on an article of clothing that clearly marks your time in the office, such as a hat, scarf or vest that you can remove and put on daily to remind yourself that your work day has begun or ended.

Either of these options helps you train your brain to know that you are off and helps you reclaim your downtime at the end of the day.

Address your unmet needs

Simply plopping down to work from any free space in your house can meet your needs for a few weeks, but if the place you choose to work lacks the functional and esthetic requirements of an office you may already be struggling with environmental fatigue.

Take the time now to consider if you might be more effective working in another room, facing a different direction, or using other office products. Yes, it’s a hassle to reconfigure your space and it may feel strange to pick up a new routine, but don’t simply accept that what you have been doing is the only way. Pause and reconsider the space you are using and invest the time in trying out new arrangements.

Consider going further with your adjustments, because you shouldn’t downplay the importance of beautifying a space. It is taken for granted that physical office locations tend to be tidy, have greenery and may even have been professionally designed for functionality and beauty. At home, you are on your own to recreate the best work setting for you. So if you’ve been putting off moving clutter out of your workspace or making other visual improvements, now may be the best time to get to them.

3. Use your vacation days to reset

I understand why you don’t want to take vacation days right now. Sitting at home like you do every day seems like a waste of your limited vacation time. There’s also a fair amount of pressure to keep adding value at your company in a period when many people fear layoffs.

But there are also several reasons why you should take a vacation in the near future. Everyone needs a break from the continuous demands of work. Keep in mind that even if you must stay at home, one of the best things about going on vacation is simply being off work. Turning on your out of office reply and knowing that you are not available to others is a thrill all by itself.

Taking vacation days also helps your mind and body reset. You are sure to lose stamina in your job if you try to handle both the stress of living through a pandemic and your full workload indefinitely. You need to build in time to take a step back from at least some part of this experience. You probably can’t make the newly created burdens of homeschooling or needing to provide remote care to family and friends disappear, so checking out of work for a few days or a week is the easiest way to reduce your cognitive and emotional load. Don’t underestimate the power of giving yourself the space to rest even if it can’t be as much of a vacation as you would like.

No matter what you decide about changing your current routine, make sure you are thoughtfully considering what you have already been through and what you will need going forward to make this new arrangement work best for you.

If you wear contacts, you know where this is going. After a long day of working and having a bit of downtime in the evening, it’s time to remove your contact lenses and either place it back into the appropriate storage container or dispose of it accordingly. You might think throwing the used contact lenses away in the garbage is the most practical thing to do, however, some people tend to flush contact lenses away in the toilet or wash it down the sink. If you’re in either category, it’s time to stop.

What Are Contact Lenses Made Of ?

Not all contact lenses are made equal. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), contact lenses can fall into two categories: soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP). Soft contact lenses are made out of a specific kind of plastic called hydrophilic plastics that are better at absorbing water. You’ve probably experienced the discomfort of wearing a contact lens that has dried out. If the hydrophilic plastics remain wet, then the contact lenses will continue to be soft. If you wear your contact lenses for a longer, extended period of time, then the soft contact lenses contain hydrophilic plastics as well as silicone hydrogel which helps your eyes receive more oxygen and can be more comfortable to wear. Due to the hardy and durable nature of rigid gas permeable lenses, they tend to last longer than soft contact lenses. However, this kind of lens is made out of acrylate, silicone, and fluorine, so it’s a bit more hard or rigid, hence the name.

What do contact lenses have to do with the environment?

If you think it’s not a big deal to throw away a pair of contact lenses down the drain, think again. In research presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society, a study by Rolf Halden, a professor and director of the Center for Environmental Health Engineering at Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute, found that in the United States alone, about 15 to 20 percent of people who wear contact lenses choose to discard the lenses in the sink or toilet.

While it may seem like a low number percentage-wise, it’s actually a lot larger than you may think since in the United States about 45 million people wear contact lenses. Those lenses that are flushed down the toilet and washed down the sink end up in wastewater treatment plants, resulting in about six to ten metric tons of plastic lenses each year in the United States.

“When the plastic loses some of its structural strength, it will break down physically. This leads to smaller plastic particles which would ultimately lead to the formation of microplastics,” Varun Kelkar, a member of the team, said in a press release from the American Chemical Society. “Aquatic organisms can mistake microplastics for food and since plastics are indigestible, this dramatically affects the marine animals’ digestive system. These animals are part of a long food chain. Some eventually find their way to the human food supply, which could lead to unwanted human exposures to plastic contaminants and pollutants that stick to the surfaces of the plastics.”

What are microplastics and how bad is it for the environment?

Plastic can come in all shapes and sizes, but according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, microplastics are about the same size as a sesame seed or less than five millimeters in length. Microplastics have already been found in numerous marine mammalsand in the skies due to flying insects, so it was only a matter of time until microplastics wound up in the human body and subsequently in human stool.You may know that plastic is bad for the environment, but you should also know that it’s easier than you think to give up using plastic in everyday life.

How you can help the environment

If you shouldn’t flush contact lenses away in your toilet or sink, and you shouldn’t throw it away in the garbage, then how do you properly dispose of contact lenses? Fortunately, you’re able to recycle your contact lenses and most packages. If you’re tired of wearing contacts, it’s not such a bad thing to switch over to glasses.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT, long and hard about what your lucky number is, but can't risk revealing it? I've been wondering whether my prayer beads falling apart had something to do with bad energy directed at me. Of course, you might say the breaking of two sets of my beloved beads had more to do with the wear and tear on the thread than a bad omen, but I'm hardly alone in worrying about the evil eye. From young mothers to CEOs, truck drivers to entrepreneurs, film-makers to doctors, we are enveloped in superstitious beliefs in varying degrees. We barely notice touching wood or our heads, with relief and hope when a situation is simply out of our control. Only, if the grim consequences of superstition did not stare us in the face.

A study by the University of Kerala found that 48 per cent of post-graduate students responded positively to superstition-this in a state that claims 94 per cent literacy. There was no difference in students from the social science stream and those studying science. Also, students from rural societies had shown lower superstition rates than urban, so education and exposure seem to have little to do with rationalism. Superstition is, in fact, a cross-community preoccupation in India.

What is It Anyway?

According to Dr Kamala Ganesh, a leading sociologist in Mumbai, "Superstition encompasses different practices, some cultural or cosmetic habits with no harmful consequences, some that are downright harmful to health and well-being, and others that discriminate against certain categories of people." Many of these, she explains, have evolved from times when the uncertainties and dangers of life and threats to survival actually made people create symbolic and metaphoric ways of dealing with them psychologically.

Adds Dr Sumant Khanna, a Gurgaon-based senior consultant in psychiatry, who specializes in treating obsessive behaviours, "The more primitive a society, the more prone we are to superstition. To some extent, superstition is a part of the process of evolution, as it has prevented us from being reckless."

Ganesh goes on to explain that not everything constituting superstition is irrational though, and neither is rationality the only logic available to humans. "It is just one dimension of our thinking," she says. However, according to her, many such customs and practices are born out of ignorance, fear or are a ploy for some to make money from the gullible.

The Lure of Superstition

It seems we continue to be drawn to it for multiple reasons-social indoctrination, and to find some control over the unpredictability of life, being key factors. Experts say that the lack of definitive knowledge has driven society to develop alternate models such as superstition. Says Shujoy Dutta, whose debut novel Like a Pinprick to the Heart deals with a family of psychics: "We're always telling ourselves stories either to explain phenomena, or to deal with life, and of course because we don't have the answers, we prefer the better story to the more rational one."

Take, for instance, the case of a lady doctor from Rajasthan who told her daughter, a young mother and former TV journalist, to burn dried red chillies "to remove the evil eye," when she had a minor viral infection. Not quite a believer, the journalist did it, just to be sure. No harm in covering all bases, right? The lady did get better, but possibly because of the medicines that were going in.

Also, turns out it's not just us Indians. A 2007 Gallup poll of Americans found that 13 per cent would be uncomfortable staying on the thirteenth floor of a hotel, and 9 per cent would actually ask for a change! Clearly then, this isn't some Eastern-world preoccupation.

There are common beliefs about walking under a ladder and black cats being bad luck. Plus, India has picked up England's superstitions with sighting a single magpie (replacing magpies with mynahs that are common here) and there are also cross-cultural obsessions with fingernails and hair! Some believe they are of particular use to those practising the tantric arts, while in the olden days in Europe, they were also believed to be crucial for 'witches' to use in their potions and brews.

Writers have lucky pens and notebooks, athletes have specific pre-game rituals and practices and actors are also prone to irrational beliefs. Most famously, theatre actors in England don't say the name of the play Macbeth on stage, only referring to it as The Scottish Play, or any of a wide variety of phrases.

How it Works

We may be drawn to certain habits and behaviours, through conditioning, but it is repeated coincidences that ensure we become believers. It's like me going from, I wore this shirt twice and got good news! to It's my lucky shirt, I absolutely must wear it to that job interview tomorrow.

Of course, sometimes, it works! Goa-based psychologist Arpita Anand weighs in: "The way we think affects the way we feel and behave. So if you think you have something that is lucky, it probably impacts your mood and that in turn enhances motivation and affects behaviour positively." She has a caveat, though: "If one is anxious about a situation, then a belief like this helps lower the anxiety by allowing a sense of control." This explains studies that have found that nearly 70 per cent of students show superstitious behaviour before or during an exam. This is really, what psychologist and Harvard professor Dr Ellen Langer calls, the "illusion of control."

It may backfire, though. Just as you can work yourself into a confident frame of mind if you carry your lucky pen, you can get a little panicky when you let yourself be led by that entirely. How will I land that job if I've just gone and lost my lucky earrings?

You feel shaken, your confidence plummets and you might just blow the interview, which could seem to justify that ultimately self-fulfilling belief. Conversely, Langer studied how you may get a false sense of confidence because of that lucky mascot, and overestimate your chances of making a killing on the stock market, for instance. Who Who doesn't want a little extra boost, though, whatever might trigger it. You'd think it's harmless enough when it comes to navigating luck and protecting yourself and your family, but superstitions and folklore can quickly turn into tricky territory especially when in involves life.

When It Is Dangerous

Sanal Edmaruku, president of Rationalist International, warns of a much darker side to the story: "The dangerous influence of superstitions keeps a large section of people under permanent fear. This leads to human rights violations, exploitation and crime. We have hundreds of mob murders of so-called witches in India where people think that illness or death is caused by them."

In fact, data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2014 states that Jharkhand rates highest in murders in this category, followed by Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat. "Practi-tioners of black magic and tantric rituals are active in villages and urban areas. Many tantric rituals involve violation of human rights, sanctioning crime; some even promote rituals with organs of children. Thousands of missing children every year in India are connected with these rituals," says Edmaruku .There are also the horrific consequences of superstitious beliefs or blind faith being substituted for medical practice: An eight-month-old baby suffering from malnutrition, pneumonia and asthma died in Odisha in February. He was brought to a hospital only after the family tried a traditional cure, a "wild fruit healing". He weighed just 4 kilos.

Instead of seeking medical help,a large number of Indians still rely on tantrics, faith healing and miracle cures that have been practised down the ages in the belief that these are acceptable. Delhi-based gynaecologist Dr Puneet Bedi notes it is alarming how the so-called educated elite insist on an 'auspicious' date and time of a baby's birth, guided by astrologers and their forecasts by the stars. People persuade doctors to perform Caesarean sections accordingly, sometimes putting the lives of both mother and child in danger. "Of course, there are doctors who are catering to this 'market'. There are cases of premature births at seven and a half months as a result of this," he adds.

Some superstitious practices during pregnancy seriously compromise the diet and nutrition of the mother, Bedi points out. "Women are told to become vegetarian or satvik, or to avoid particular foods," he says. The fact is, early nutrition during gestation and in the months following the baby's birth, is critical. Women, with their families, should only check with their doctors, on their pregnancy and in the months after. The same goes for child nutrition.

The Fight Against Superstition

Edmaruku and other rationalists have fought to highlight that many dangerous superstitions are taken too lightly in India, protected under the garb of faith and belief. "No civilized society can protect fraudulent practices, miracle-mongering, violence, human rights violations and crimes even if it is presented under the cover of tradition or religion," he says.He and his colleagues are facing a chilling backlash for those statements, with the counter-argument descending into violence. Edmaruku's friend, Dr Narendra Dabholkar-known for his campaigns against black magic and superstitions-was allegedly murdered in broad daylight in Pune in August 2013. Eminent Kannada writer and scholar M. M. Kalburgi was allegedly killed in August 2015 for his fight against superstition and blind faith. Edmaruku himself is in self-imposed exile in Helsinki, Finland, for nearly four years now, fearing for his life if he were to return to India.The rationalist has spent decades busting myths around supposed "miracles" in India. His work has triggered a series of events and multiple complaints under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code [that punishes deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs]. Edmaruku recounts that there have been many attempts at intimidation and threats of bodily harm.The final trigger for his departure from the country was the lack of protection, despite a warning that assassins had been paid to kill him. He left for a lecture tour to Europe in 2012, and never returned to India. "When I was planning to return to India one year later, my friend in Maharashtra, Narendra Dabholkar, put together a protection plan for me. Some days later he was murdered by an unknown killer."

Laws to the Rescue

In fact, it was shortly after Dabholkar's murder, that his home state passed the Maha-rashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013, with other states like Karnataka looking to follow suit. Following the murder of Kalburgi last year, there was a renewed call for the state to bring in legislation, the draft Karnataka Prevention of Superstitious Practices Bill (2013), which has seen prolonged debate and rather vociferous opposition from various groups. Rajasthan though, has passed the Rajasthan Prevention of Witch-Hunting Act, 2015. It provides for life imprisonment for murderers and an imposition of a collective fine on the residents of the area where witch-hunting has taken place.

If it weren't for these cases, which have become a lightning rod for conversations on rising intolerance, we could perhaps laugh off irrational thinking as our personal foibles and beliefs.

The obsession with purity has resulted in women being barred from temples during menstruation. But there are voices challenging this and other supposedly preordained gender bias, including that of Trupti Desai, fighting for the right to enter a temple in Maharashtra, which she won recently. There are others fighting the ban against the entry of women into the Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai, with the backing of the Maharashtra government now.

Can We Change?

Arrayed against them are the forces resistant to change, forces speaking on behalf of patriarchal systems, speaking for "tradition", at times gaining dangerous ground, as they justify violence to win the argument. That is the scary truth of modern-day India, once home to so many different traditions through the ages: the materialistic, atheistic, sceptical philosophy of Carvakas back in the 7th Century BC.

The flip side: if you're not a believer in superstition, do take into account people who "hear voices" or "see ghosts".There may be a larger psychiatric problem at hand. Or those who are compulsively superstitious may be prone to anxiety disorders, depression or stress, finds research by B. J. Zebb and M. C. Moore.

Experts say those with the anxious aversion personality type are more prone to superstition and obsession. Turns out, often superstition can turn into an obsessive compulsive disorder. Khanna mentions a patient who believed that he had to wash every part of his body with extreme care (due to an obsession with purity). "So much so, it took him four hours each day to do this. He had developed the belief that he was unclean and used chemicals like toilet cleaners to wash himself," says Khanna.

Khanna warns that some people may start with a superstition, but when they feel their beliefs are not working, they may even feel persecuted and anxious, leading to clinical depression in the long term.

But for those of us who touch wood and hope to steer away from our dependence on the 'lucky mascot', know that it's never too late to change our behaviour and beliefs. Psychologist Irving Lorge found that only the speed of learning, rather than the power to learn, decreased with age. So while there's nothing wrong with having your personal set of rituals to set your mind at ease, it's not a bad idea to rethink some of your behavioural patterns.

It comes on suddenly, at random or as the result of days of stress. You feel your heart pounding, your pulse racing, your hands shaking, your head throbbing. You try to think of anything else but your thoughts are caught in a spiral of anxiety and fear. And you just can’t catch your breath. You’re having a panic attack. While they’re not at all pleasant, panic attacks are very common and there are things you can do to stop them, says James Marrugo, PhD, a psychotherapist in Broomfield, Colorado, who specializes in anxiety and panic disorder.

The first step to stopping a panic attack is to recognize what it is, as opposed to thinking you’re having a heart attack or an aneurysm. When you’re in the midst of a panic attack, getting out of it can seem impossible. It’s not. One simple way to regain control is through regulated breathing, Marrugo says.

“When anxiety levels are high, breathing becomes shallow which can cause or worsen a panic attack,” he explains. Teaching your body to quit hyperventilating and to breathe deeply can calm you, he says. To do this, you need to use your diaphragm, the muscle located between your thoracic and abdominal cavities. While there are many styles of diaphragmatic breathing, one type that has proven to be so effective that the U.S. military teaches to its members is called combat or tactical breathing.(Civilians sometimes call it box breathing.)

This makes sense as military personnel are often placed in very high-stress, panic-inducing situations and they need to be able to calm down quickly. Tactical breathing helps them focus, get in control of their emotions and thoughts, and manage stress—all in a matter of seconds.

How tactical breathing works

Tactical breathing is easy to try. Here’s the step-by-step process:

Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four.

Hold your breath for a count of four.

Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of four.

Hold for a count of four.

Repeat 3-5 times, visualizing each number as you count.

The cause of your anxiety doesn’t need to be firing guns or dodging bullets for this breathing method to be effective. Anyone suffering from a panic attack or any sort of stress can use tactical breathing to ease anxiety, stop panic, and regain focus quickly, Marrugo says.

Breathing is a proven way to help you focus,

But pay attention to how often you experience these moments of extreme fear and worry.

More isn't always better—and that's even true when it comes to your workouts. According to science, squeezing in 20 minutes of vigorous exercise can not only give you cardio benefits but boost your immunity, too.

Building a case for the 20-minute exercise

A 20-minute exercise may sound more like a warm-up than a workout, but a 2017 study published in Brain, Behaviour, and Immunity suggests otherwise. Researchers found that as little as 20 minutes of exercise can have anti-inflammatory effects that boost your immune system. They specifically monitored the effects of one 20-minute session of moderate treadmill exercise, but senior author Suzi Hong, PhD, in the department of psychiatry and the department of family medicine and public health at UC San Diego School of Medicine, says, that fast walking appears to have similar effects.

In the study, 47 participants first gave a blood sample before exercising. Then, they walked on a treadmill for about 20 minutes—with the intensity adjusted for each person’s fitness level—then provided another blood sample immediately after. The blood samples showed that the exercise caused a five per cent decrease in the number of immune cells producing a cytokine, or protein, called tumour necrosis factor—TNF. (More on TNF later.)

Here’s why that’s important

Exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system, a pathway that increases heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. When this happens, the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine are released into the bloodstream and activate a cellular reaction that suppresses cytokines, including TNF.

TNF has some admirable qualities, like boosting immune responses and killing cancer cells, but it also has pro-inflammatory properties. Though inflammation is a necessary part of our immune systems, too much of it can lead to autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, as well as fibromyalgia.

Why and how exercise can reduce inflammation

Previous research has already demonstrated that exercise can reduce inflammation, but the significance of this study is in the physiological explanations about why and how this happens, says Carmen Terzic, MD, PhD, chair of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Moderate exercise also has an abundance of other health benefits, like controlling hypertension and diabetes, preventing Alzheimer’s, reducing anxiety and stress, and slowing the aging process. Dr. Terzic says that people who engage in moderate exercise regularly can increase their lifespan by up to 10 years. “Exercise is our best medicine for almost every single disease you can think of,” she says.The best part? Light to moderate exercise is as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Or, it can even be spending a few more minutes walking your dog. That’s right—no gym membership required.

For a frail man, who undertook days of fasting on several occasions during India’s struggle to become independent – the longest one continuing for 21 days – Mahatma Gandhi lived a healthy and active life for most of the years. A number of books that he wrote in a lifetime, including ‘Key to Health’, ‘Diet and Diet Reforms’, and ‘The Moral Basis of Vegetarianism’ talk about the importance of eating a healthy diet.

Gandhi was known as many things – an activist, a peacemaker, a national hero, and a spiritual leader. The man helped India gain independence in 1947. To keep his energy levels high and yet follow a simple lifestyle, Gandhi experimented with different diets before narrowing down his preferences. His dietary approach and preferences have inspired many in the past, and continue to do so even today.

Embraced a Vegetarian Diet

Born in a Vaishnav family, Gandhi spent all his life eating complete vegetarian food. He abstained from non-vegetarian food items, like meat, poultry and fish. However, that did not stop him from obtaining the daily required amount of nutrients. A vegetarian diet is typically low in saturated fats and animal proteins and rich in fibre, vitamins, and complex carbohydrates. Today, several research studies state that people who follow vegetarian diet have a lower risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and hypertension.

Consumed Raw Food Instead of Cooked Food

Gandhi believed strongly in pure, ‘sattvic’ food. He condemned the idea of consuming cooked food – food items that caused the temper to rise. Instead, he preferred eating raw food. Gandhi liked his vegetables boiled and avoided adding oil or salt. A raw diet mostly consists of plant-based, unprocessed food that is either heated at very low temperature or is completely raw. The diet is essentially rich in vegetables and fruits, seeds and nuts, legumes and sprouted grains. Minimally heated and raw food items are more nutritious than cooked food items. Boiled beetroot and radish were among Gandhi’s favourite vegetables.

Ate in Small Portions

Gandhi measured his meal and ate in small portions twice a day. His daily diet included 80gms each of germinated wheat, sweet almonds, and leafy greens, 2 ounces of naturally sweetened honey, and 6 pieces of lemon. Apart from this, an integral part of Gandhi’s staple diet was dal and rice, which are high in protein and carbohydrates. Gandhi would divide his meal into two parts – he took his first meal at 11 in the morning and consumed the second meal at 6.15 in the evening. He would also consume a small bowl of curd following a meal, as it helped in digestion and soothed the stomach. A health freak, Gandhi would start his day by drinking a glass of warm, boiled water with honey and lemon.

Consumed Low-Fat Milk

Fitness experts recommend drinking low fat, skimmed milk to avoid consuming extra calories – but Gandhi had been doing it from his early days. Instead of consuming cow or sheep’s milk, he preferred drinking goat’s milk. Creamy and equally delicious, goat’s milk is a natural, nutritious alternative to cow’s milk with the same levels of vitamins, minerals, and calcium but relatively fewer calories – per serving of goat’s milk contains only a hundred calories. Besides, it aids digestion and makes for a healthier option when trying to reduce cholesterol levels and saturated fat intake.

Much like his views on justice, truth, non-violence, and freedom struggle, the food on Mahatma Gandhi’s plate was opinionated and never without a cause. Looking back at his daily eating habits, one can certainly state, Gandhi indeed was the first ‘Diet Guru’ that people from his generation and the ones thereafter has ever seen. One can draw inspiration from him and take a step closer to living a healthier, happier life.

While cell phone addiction is a valid disorder, the designation of nomophobia is loosely attributed to the anxiety disorders connected to not being able to use cell phones. It’s less of a phobia and more of an addiction as you cannot be without it. These can be better enumerated by the typical symptoms when not being able to use a mobile phone.

Symptoms of mobile phone addiction

The ability to spend hours and hours on the cell phone without realizing how much time has passed by.

Forced attempts to separate from the cell phone result in more time being spent with it (akin to a drug addiction).

Incremental usages in a number of hours as you end up spending more and more hours on the phone.

Personal and professional lives being hampered due to excessive mobile phone usage.

Surfacing of withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, restlessness,anger and depression.

How mobile phone addiction affects people?

Different age groups are affected differently by mobile phone addiction; although some of the symptoms are fairly common. The effect tends to be far more severe on children and teenagers.

Let’s look at how different age groups are affected by mobile phone addiction

Children

Increasingly, younger children are carrying cellphones, especially smartphones. This tends to disrupt their lives as they get easily distracted and thus addicted to chatting with friends and connecting on social media. With children, appetite as well as mental development, is also hindered. In a study in the U.K., it was found that young children with mobile phones had less nutritional intake and thus had lesser and slower physical development than normal. It also affects their eyes. Direct exposure to blue light – like the one that comes from cellphone screens – can cause damage to the retina of the eye.

Teenagers

Development

Apart from the similar problems mentioned with children, the performance in school tends to suffer the most along with other developmental disabilities in the brain. The human brain is still forming till the age of 25 and many of the finer faculties that develop during the teenage years get badly affected. Holistic development like hobbies, sports, communication skills are greatly hindered.

Information overload

Teenagers also tend to be very impressionable and thus are at a risk of predation from sources all-round the internet. While aggressively watching porn, the adolescent brain is being shaped around a sexual experience that is isolating, visceral, and completely void of any love or compassion. This has the potential to lead to great problems in sexual compulsivity and sex addiction throughout the adolescent boy's life because his brain gets shaped to expect the "heroin-like" porn dopamine rush from all of his real-life sexual experiences.

Peer pressure

Teenagers seek more and more expensive phones in order to compete or to fit in with the crowd. this not only puts more financial strain on the parents but also leads to disharmony at home.

Very often parents complain that their teenager can do nothing else but sit by their mobile phone waiting for calls or text messages. They no longer communicate with family members and its not uncommon! Catching teenagers staying up till early hours of the morning texting or talking with friends. Their studies greatly suffer, hobbies no longer take priority and problems like irritability, poor concentration, bunking classes and other health issues are on alarming rise due to lack of sleep.

Emotional issues

In the era where assignments, notes, outing plans, party invites and important messages are passed on in Whatsapp groups. Getting a phone call or a text message implies an importance, ‘Somebody wants Me’!! It boosts the receivers self-esteem and self-worth. The phone also feeds the desire for attention, acceptability and satisfies a teenager’s emotional drive.

Strained relation with parents

A great number of teens do not let anyone touch their phones. Most teenagers turn rebellious and aggressive when parents try to limit their mobile usage. Adults

Adults, in general, tend to suffer more from disruptions at work as well as problems in their personal lives. Some easy tips that you can follow to start your de–addiction process are as follows:

Ensure that the first 30 minutes of the day after waking up are only for you. Don’t be tempted to look at the phone immediately after you wake up.

Create specific no phone time zones in a day where no matter how big the urge is, you don’t check your phone. These could be during any time of the day and try incrementally stretching the amount of time that you can be without your phone each time.

Use driving as an excuse to turn off your phone. This not only helps in fighting addiction but also lowers the chances of automobile accidents caused due to distracted driving.

Keep a cutoff time for phone usage and switch your phone off at least an hour before your hit the sack. This will stop you from playing late night games and help you sleep better as well. When you feel the urge to check your phone, close your eyes and take a deep breath.

Being alone isn't our most comfortable state. In fact, a 2011 study from Harvard University and the University of Virginia found that subjects were so averse to loneliness that they would rather receive a series of electrical shocks than be alone with their own thoughts for 15 minutes.

Further research suggests we'd be wise to overcome the anxiety that seems to accompany loneliness. While nobody's advocating becoming a hermit, there are benefits of being alone—at least some of the time.

We miss out on less

For many, the idea of going to a concert or out to dinner alone sparks dread—what if other patrons think we're social pariahs? But University of Maryland professor Rebecca Ratner believes that fear is causing us to forgo fun. "People have activities that they want to do—see a movie, or a show that's coming to town for one night only—but they lack friends to go with them, and so they miss out," she says.What's more, her research has shown that doing an activity alone isn't any less enjoyable than taking a friend. In a study published this year, Ratner's team recruited participants from a student union and asked them to spend at least five minutes in a nearby art gallery. Some were sent in solo, others in pairs. Participants were surveyed beforehand and asked how much they anticipated enjoying the activity. Unsurprisingly, those attending alone believed they'd have less fun. Upon leaving the gallery, however, the two groups reported enjoying themselves equally.

We're kinder to strangers

In a 2012 study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, researchers completed a series of experiments to determine how being socially connected affects the way we relate to those outside of our close social groups.

In one experiment, researchers split participants into two groups. Members of the first were asked to arrive at the lab with a friend; those in the second were instructed to show up alone. Participants were divided into pairs (those who came alone were matched with strangers; the others were teamed with their friends), shown pictures and told that the images were of people responsible for a terrorist attack. Subjects then answered a number of questions, some of which were intended to measure their willingness to mistreat others, e.g., "How important is it to treat these people humanely?" Participants who'd been accompanied by a pal were significantly more likely to endorse harm than those who'd shown up alone.

Researchers hypothesized that those who spend a lot of time with close friends may be less motivated to associate with others. It's counterintuitive, but more time spent with acquaintances might lead us to be less empathetic toward strangers.

We become better people

According to Eric Klinenberg, a sociology professor at New York University, having smartphones and social media accounts at our fingertips heightens our aversion to being by ourselves. Our fears of missing out are stoked by endless photos of friends doing exciting things. We constantly need to be entertained, Klinenberg says, and as a result we've become alienated from what he calls "productive solitude."

Reflecting on our actions and thinking about future personal improvements are the cornerstones of productive solitude. Carving out time to do these things can help make us happier, stronger and more accountable. The process allows us to step back, then return to the world with more insight and energy.

"The only way we have a chance to make sense of our choices is [through] solo reflection," Klinenberg says. "Unless you're completely content with who you are and the way you live, productive solitude is necessary."

How to disconnect

Michael Harris, the Toronto-based author of The End of Absence: Reclaiming What We've Lost in a World of Constant Connection, says you can trick yourself into taking breaks from socializing. Harris suggests going for a walk and leaving your cellphone at home or taking a book to a restaurant and having dinner for one. While you might feel frustrated 20 minutes in, there's no reneging: you've committed to time by yourself.

Harris believes we should balance solitude and socializing the same way we go about maintaining a healthy diet. "Social connection is not an evil thing any more than sugars and fats are," Harris says. "It's not about abstinence. It's about giving yourself multiple modes of being."

Coffee: Miracle Remedy

More than three cups a day lowers women's risk of developing the most common skin cancer by 20 percent.

Drinking at least one cup of coffee a day lowers women's risk of stroke by up to 25 percent.

Consuming at least two cups daily reduces women's chances of becoming depressed by up to 20 percent.

Drink it Black!

"Drink it black, or at most put a little skim milk in it" to minimize calories, Dr. Chopra recommends. The benefits from decaf may not be as prodigious, so stick with regular if you can tolerate the buzz. If you've got a bandana, a coffee filter and hair ties, you've got everything you need to create your own non-medical face mask.

According to the latest recommendations from government medical agencies, it’s a good idea to wear a face mask that covers your nose and mouth whenever you’re in public. This includes going to the grocery store or pharmacy, riding public transit or any other time you’re not able to maintain the recommended social distancing of at least two metres. Doing so should help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

That said, the government is also asking you to leave medical masks like N95 respirators and surgical masks for front-line health care workers. Luckily, creating your own DIY face mask out of a few ordinary household items couldn’t be easier.

All you need is a 20-by-20-inch cotton bandana or a tightly woven piece of cotton (a t-shirt, pillow case or tea towel can also be cut to size), two hair ties (or rubber bands), and a coffee filter. Simply follow the instructions in the video below to make your own

What you’ll need to make a face mask

Bandana or cotton fabric, approximately 20-by-20 inches

Coffee filter (or piece of HEPA vacuum filter)

2 hair ties (or rubber bands or pieces of elastic)

Step-by-step instructions to make a face mask

Fold the bandana in half.

Fold the coffee filter in half and place in the centre of the folded bandana.

Fold the bottom third of the bandana up, then fold the top third of the bandana down.

Loop one hair tie around each end of the folded fabric. They should sit about 6 inches apart.

Fold each end of the fabric in towards the centre and tuck them into each other.

To put on the mask, loop the hair ties over your ears. Adjust the mask to make sure it covers your nose and mouth completely.

Helpful hints:

To remove your face mask, lift from the hair ties (or rubber bands). Avoid touching the fabric at the front of the mask. Discard the coffee filter after each use.

Wash the bandana (or cotton fabric) with hot water and detergent. Allow to dry thoroughly.

It might taste sweet going down, but it can be extremely damaging to your health.From depression to heart disease, the sugar in your diet can wreak havoc on your health.

It hurts your heart

Harvard University researchers studied thousands of American adults over 15 years and found that those who consumed 25 percent or more of their daily calories from added sugar were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease as those whose diets included less than 10 percent of added sugar a day. The biggest sugar sources? Sweetened beverages, fruit drinks, grain-based treats such as muffins, and dairy desserts such as ice cream.

“No sugar added” doesn’t mean “healthy”

Even if a label says 100 percent juice, don’t chug with abandon. The drink may have no added sweeteners,  but its naturally occurring sugars are far more concentrated  than what you’d find in a piece of fruit. And  unlike oranges and  apples, which are high  in fiber, juice offers  empty calories and is of  minimal nutritional value.

Excess sugar is linked  to dementia

In 2017, researchers at the University of Bath found a molecular link  between sugary diets and early Alzheimer’s. The scientists discovered that glycation—a reaction through which glucose affects  cells—causes damage to an enzyme that’s involved in reducing abnormal protein buildup in the brain, which is characteristic of the disease.

Sugar won’t make  kids hyper. It’s worse than that.

A meta-analysis in the Journal  of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that sugar doesn’t  affect children’s behavior. “It may simply be the environment where certain food is being served (for  example, parties) that causes  children to be more excitable,” says Andrea D’Ambrosio, a registered  dietitian in Kitchener-Waterloo,  Ontario. But it does spike their blood pressure and cholesterol. One 2016 study in Obesity showed that reducing young  subjects’ sugar  consumption for just nine days  led to improvements in those areas, as well as in overall blood sugar levels.

Snacks that sneak in the sugar

Smoothies

A medium (16-ounce) store-bought smoothie has 30 to 80 grams of sugar.(A 1.6-ounce Hershey bar has has 24 grams.)

Trail mix

Conventional wisdom suggests stashing trail mix in your car for a healthy snack on the go, but a quarter cup  of a commercial  variety can contain 16 grams of sugar.

Yogurt

A 5-ounce serving of fruit-flavored yogurt can contain 22 grams of sugar. If you top it with  a quarter cup of store-bought granola,you’re downing another  6 grams.

Salad dressing

Grabbing a salad for lunch  is smart, but not if you pick  the wrong bottled dressing.

Some brands of French and raspberry vinaigrette have 5 or more grams of sugar per  

2-tablespoon serving.

Oatmeal

Flavored oatmeal packets may seem like a healthy plan for busy mornings, but they can contain as much as 12 grams of sugar per serving.( Heaping on a tablespoon of brown sugar adds  an extra 12 grams.)

13 five-pound bags

This is the amount of added sugar the average American eats in a year— without noticing most of it. The American Heart Association recommends  that men consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams) of added sugar per day (about the amount in a Three Musketeers bar) and women no more than 6 (24 grams). On average, we each ingest 19.5 teaspoons (78 grams) a day.

An expert says you should cut down—now

Laura A. Schmidt, a professor at  the University of California, San  Francisco, worries about all the  damage sugar is doing to our bodies. That’s why she became lead investigator for UCSF’s SugarScience, a site  developed as an “authoritative source for the scientific evidence about sugar and its impact on health.” Here is her strongest advice

With all the negative news  about sugar, should we switch  to something else?

The evidence is mounting against sucralose, saccharin, and aspartame.  Some research shows that these sweeteners damage the microbiome in the gut. They’re also associated with weight gain and glucose intolerance—the things people use them to prevent. Based on what we know, I wouldn’t consume those products or give them to my kids.

How do you keep added sugar from seeping into your own diet?

I just don’t have it around the  house. Take all that stuff out of your environment. Once you start cutting back, you’ll lose your sweet tooth.  It’s a palate phenomenon,  and it doesn’t take long. You’ll notice that you  can suddenly taste  the natural sweetness  in unprocessed food,  and you’ll start to  find processed  products cloying  and unpleasant.

Sugar is as bad for your  liver as alcohol

Unlike other forms of sugar, fructose  is processed in the liver. Though it  occurs naturally in fruit, we’re still  consuming too much of it thanks to our penchant for foods with added fructose sweeteners, and it’s leading to a rise  in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). One visible red flag: a sugar belly (yes, like a beer belly). Why?  The liver breaks down excess fructose into fat globules that travel through  the bloodstream and lodge around your midsection and internal organs. And, like the liver damage produced by alcohol, NAFLD causes inflammation and scarring. “It is one of the leading causes of liver transplants,” Schmidt says

“Healthier” sweeteners  are no better for you

Those trying to cut down on sugar may be drawn to studies that tout maple  syrup’s antioxidant benefits or honey’s healing power.  Ignore them,  says D’Ambrosio.  “Sugar doesn’t  add a significant amount of other nutrients,” she says. “Sugar is sugar, so it’s best used in moderation no matter what form it takes.”

Cancer cells can be sugar fiends

Research from the University of Texas at Dallas shows  a link between sugar and squamous cell carcinoma, which is hard to treat and accounts for about a quarter of all lung cancers. All told, the study found, four types of squamous cell cancer consume a lot of sugar.

Sugar may keep you  up at night

A 2016 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine shows eating more  sugar (along with less fiber and more saturated fat) is associated with lighter, more disrupted, and less restorative sleep.

We’re still drinking too much liquid sugar

Good news: We are drinking less soda. Sales of carbonated soft drinks are at their lowest level in 30 years. Bad news: We’ve replaced it with options that may be just as unhealthy. Sales of flavored waters, ready-to-drink coffees and teas, energy drinks, and sports beverages  are all growing. Energy drinks contain about 30 grams of sugar, sports drinks contain about 40 grams, and your average flavored latte comes  in at around 45 grams.

Sugar messes with  your cholesterol

A 2010 study of 8,495 Americans  over 18 published in JAMA found that  as subjects’ added-sugar intake  went up, their levels of HDL (good cholesterol) dropped, increasing  their risk for cardiovascular disease.  The study also found that women in particular who ate or drank more added sugar had higher levels of LDL (bad  cholesterol) density.

Sugar can make you sad

Ending a bad day with a bowl of Ben & Jerry's may make you feel worse in the long run. In 2015, Columbia University Medical Center researchers found that postmenopausal women with diets high in added sugar and refined grains were at an increased risk of new-onset depression, while the risk decreased in subjects who ate more dietary fiber, whole grains, vegetables, and unprocessed fruits.

Some food labels can hide sugar content

For the first time in 20 years, the  FDA is revising nutrition labels for packaged foods to better highlight the links between diet and chronic diseases. A particularly welcome change is the way the new label lists sugar.

Sugar takes your breath away

Scientists have long suspected  a link between sugar-sweetened beverages and asthma. After  analyzing data from 146,990 adults in the United States, they found that, sure enough, adults who downed at least two of these drinks a day were more likely to have respiratory issues.

Sweets could be  worse than salt for hypertension

According to a study in the Journal  of the American Society of Nephrology in 2010, a high-fructose diet can push your blood pressure over  the threshold of 120/80, which is considered the upper end of normal. In a 2014 research review published  in the journal BMJ Open Heart, medical experts argued that added sugar  intake may have the most dramatic  effect on blood pressure—and, in fact, could be more detrimental to heart health than sodium.

It’s bad for your body mass index

Researchers from the University of Reading, the University of Cambridge, and Arizona State University studied the sugar intake of 1,700 men and women ages 39 to 77 in Norfolk,  United Kingdom. According to a  study published in 2015, they found that those who ate the most sugar were 54 percent more likely to  be overweight (that is, have a body mass index over 25)—and were also more likely to have underreported  how much sugar they consumed.

It has been observed that roughly 3 out of 4 antibacterial bars and soaps contain triclosan which is a certain type of drug previously used in hospital premises. The usage of triclosan in other products like hand wash and gels is yet to be verified and proven safe. Due to the lack of proper evaluation, there have been a number of instances where antibacterial soap has done more harm than good.

Here are a few reasons why you must reconsider using antibacterial soap:

It creates bacterial resistance.

Triclosan is closely associated with a number of health issues, bacterial resistance being the chief among them. Repeated usage of antibacterial soap can promote the growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria. It might effectively terminate regular bacteria but it is basically useless against the resistant bacteria. The bacteria resistant formula present in these hand washes might cause complications in the long run.

It can potentially disrupt endocrine functions.

Triclosan has a close resemblance to the thyroid hormone and hence can tip off its receptor sites. This occurrence can lead to major complications like artificially induced early puberty, fertility issues, obesity and sometimes even cancer. Hence it can be said that antibacterial soaps should be avoided in order to prevent such far-reaching side effects.

It can cause serious health problems in children.

Triclosan present in hand wash can adversely affect the development of the immune system in children. At a growing age, children develop natural resistance to certain diseases. Prolonged use of antibacterial hand wash and soap can diminish their exposure to bacteria and obstruct the proper development of their immune system. Therefore, it is safer to use normal soaps instead which are as effective and do not contain triclosan.

It is extremely harmful to the environment.

Prolonged and regular usage of hand wash containing triclosan would, in turn, increase the amount of this drug that gets flushed through the drainage. Triclosan is generally left untreated in the sewage treatment plants which later enters the water bodies and disrupts the food chain since it primarily affects the growth of algae.

When something on your fruit or vegetable looks odd, it isn’t unusual to instinctively toss it to the side. But some “weird” parts of fruits and veggies actually contain copious amounts of health benefits , or they may offer other little-known uses. Those “strings” on your banana are no different.

Often peeled off and thrown away with its skin, banana “strings,” which are scientifically called “phloem bundles,” are just as nutritious as the rest of the fruit. They are packed full of potassium, fibre, vitamin A, and vitamin B6.

Phloem is a tissue found in all plants, which is responsible for the transport of nutrients. “Phloem bundles are made up of living cells and allows for food products and sugar to get to all the different parts of the plant,” says Rebecca Lee, a registered nurse and the founder of remediesforme.com, a health resource for natural remedies.

And that is exactly what those “strings” do in the banana; they act as “veins” or “arteries,” transporting necessary nutrients throughout the delectable fruit so it’s grown properly.

“It’s not gross or disgusting it just helps the banana grow and become delicious,” Dr. Elizabeth Trattner A.P. DOM, Doctor of Chinese and Integrative Medicine, told " It is fine to eat and although its structure is a little different than the inside it can be consumed.”

Those phloem bundles can also be used to determine if your banana is ready to eat. If all of the nutrients haven’t been evenly distributed throughout the fruit yet, then the phloem bundles stay on more tightly; meaning the banana is underripe. The opposite occurs with ripe and overripe bananas, as the “strings” can be removed more easily.

In medical terms, acne is better known as Acne Vulgaris.

If we know the causes of acne, then it is mainly a disorder of the oil glands. These oil glands are located under our skin. In adolescence, the body undergoes many changes. These hormonal changes can also result from the activities of the oil glands. Acne is basically a disorder related to oil glands. These oil glands are present under the skin. The activity of the oil gland increases during adolescence due to hormonal changes due to which acne is produced. The pores or pores of the skin are attached to the oil gland cells from inside, due to which sebum oil is produced in the pores of the skin. Sebum helps in getting the bad cells out of the pores and keeps creating new cells. But when more sebum oil starts to form due to hormone imbalance, then this oil closes these pores, causing acne or rash.

Due to changes in hormones in adolescence- changes in hormones

occur during teenage and pregnancy. During this time, the activity of oil glands increases and sometimes excessive sebum is produced which prevents the follicle of the skin and causes acne.

Lack of sleep is also the

One thing is for certain, the ways

Case the room

In the attack on the Bataclan concert hall, a security guard led a group of people to safety through a fire exit left of the stage. But there won't always be a guard to help. Make a point of identifying emergency exits for yourself.

Make yourself smaller

'Where there's cover from sight, there's cover from gunfire,' advises Ian Reed, a British military instructor and chief executive of the Formative Group security firm. Hard cover, such as a concrete wall, is the best option. Stay quiet and put your phone on silent.

'Run, hide, tell'

In its report on 'dynamic lockdowns', the UK government's advice is to run if there is a safe route out. If you can't run, hide. If you escape, immediately tell an official what's happening. Separate from gathering crowds; always assume there's going to be a secondary action.

Be a team player

It's the most efficient way for a group to evacuate and avoid jams. Social psychologist Chris Cocking says, most people are likely to try to help one another even in extreme situations-like the group of people who cooperated to escape the Bataclan via skylight.

Stay vigilant.

You can do your bit by ensuring that all your verification processes (particularly tenant verification) are complete and in order. Be watchful and report anything remotely suspicious.

An Earworm

Remember Anu Malik's 'Dekho Baarish Ho Rahi Hai'? It was the second line, the bone-crunching 'It's raining, it's raining' that always got stuck in one's head. It would take a whole teeth-gnashing day to get it out. There is a better way, though, to cure what scientists call 'involuntary musical imagery' (aka, the common earworm). In fact, there are two ways.

Option one

Embrace it. Listen to the song all the way through, at full volume, ideally singing along. The idea is that by confronting your brain with the full version, your earworm will end when the song does.

Option two

Replace it. Play a different song all the way through, at full volume, in an attempt to chase away your earworm with something more forgettable. In one UK study, the most popular 'cure' song was the national anthem, 'God Save the Queen'. On this side of the world, try humming 'Jana Gana Mana'to clear your head before twilight's last gleaming.

Being Stranded In the Wilderness

Find water

As the subjects of my stories know, you last only about four days without water. To ward off dehydration, search for animals, birds (especially songbirds), insects (especially honeybees) and green vegetation, all of which can indicate that water is nearby. Rock crevices may hold small caches of rainwater.

Find food

You can survive up to three weeks without food, but a growling stomach will set in much sooner. Reach for fruits that monkeys eat. Nearly all wild bird eggs are edible, but they could be protected by the law. Eat them only if you have no option. If you are close to a stream, try freshwater fish. Avoid mushrooms, if you don't know which ones are safe.

Brave an animal ambush

We've read about bear and shark attacks. But what about an aggressive wolf or deer? Regardless of species, stand your ground. Running triggers the animal's chase mentality, and unless you're trying to avoid a snake, you won't be able to run fast enough.

Signal a rescuer

The subjects of many of my stories are able to attract the attention of rescuers using a reflection, a signal fire or by making a lot of noise. To increase your chances of being discovered, go to an open area on a hilltop, then use a mirror, CD, belt buckle or water bottle to reflect light towards the pilot of an airplane or a helicopter overhead. To create white smoke, which is easy for rescuers to see, add green vegetation to your fire.

Splint a broken bone

The people in the stories I read climb backcountry cliffs, survive plane crashes, fall thousands of feet without a parachute-and often break bones. One key to these folks' survival? A splint, which can help reduce pain, prevent further damage and allow you to move to a safer place. Basic rule of splinting: If you break a bone, immobilize the joints above and below it; if your joint is injured, immobilize the bones above and below it. Either way, first pad the injury with something soft, like a shirt or socks; next, lay out something hard, like a tent pole or a sturdy stick, that extends past either side of the injury; finally, tie it all in place with duct tape, strips of clothing or a padded rope from your camping gear. Don't tie it so tightly that you lose circulation. One injury is enough.

Ice the finger for five minutes

to reduce swelling.

Slather a lubricant such as soap

grease or lotion all over the finger to help the ring slide.

Tear off a foot or two of dental floss

or another strong string.

Poke one end

of the floss under the ring,towards your palm, and pull it a couple of inches out.

Wrap the longer piece firmly

around your finger, starting next to the ring and continuing towards the end of the finger until it's wrapped well past the joint you're trying to get the ring past. The goal is to compress the swelling and push some of it towards the skinnier part of your finger

Grab the two-inch end

of the floss that you've poked under your ring and pull on it as you push the ring past the joint until it's free. Voilà! You get to keep the finger-and the ring.

In June last year, 12 year old T.J. Guerrero's lemonade stand turned Doug Wilkey into a sourpuss again. The 61 year old resident of Duneddin, USA complained to city authorities, at least his third time in two years, saying T.J.'s little business which was set up next to Wilkey's home was illegal and brought about traffic and noise, which reduced his property's value. Police and town officials saw no reason to interfere, and neither did a local radio host who took up the cause. Following an on- air shout out , customers beelined to T.J.'s stand, and he racked up $1000 in one day ( $300 of which he donated to charity.

This April When a Pune man saw his neighbour, a poor widow, come to his son's birthday party to pack some food to take away for her own child, he could'nt stomach the freeloading. An argument with the woman turned into a fistfight, with the man's guests joining him. They soon reached the local police station, where the woman also claimed she was attacked with a sharp weapon. The cops booked the man and his accomplices. It turns out that the man was no ordinary miscreant- he runs a human rights organisation.

NIGHT TERROR

After an evening on the town, 22 year old Tyler Sullivan got a little too czy with the wrong person. On 25th October 2014, Sullivan's, neighbour in Clinton USA, woke up exciting to find his wife but instead discovered the young man snoring under the covers. Turns out Sullivans mother lived in the next apartment over and the drunken lad had walked through the wrong door. Now charged with criminal tresspass and disorderly conduct, Sullivan will most certainly make sure he's home before making himself at home.

TRANSLATE FOREIGN TEXT

With a typical translation app, you have to tap out text in a foreign language and then convert it to your native tongue, or vice versa. This can be a tedious process—especially if a server is hovering over you waiting to take your food order. Here's a better idea: Scan the menu (or any other document) with your phone's camera and instantly view the English translation.

You can work this trick on any phone with the free Google Translate app (for Android and iOS). Once you download the program, open it and choose the languages you'll require—the one to be translating from and the one to be translated to—from the drop-down menus at the top of the screen. Then tap the Instant translate button, which looks like a camera with a little plus sign inside. Now point your phone's camera at foreign text, from road signs to paper documents, and the screen will display the translated words as if by magic.

If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone, version S8 or later, you can pull off the same feat with the native camera app. Just open it and tap the Bixby Vision button, which looks like an eye symbol, on the lower left-hand side of the screen. Then point your camera at a document, and the phone will automatically detect the language and translate the foreign words into your phone's default tongue.

ADD AUGMENTED REALITY

Want to see digital graphics overlaid on your phone camera's view of the world? You have more options than ever before: Both Android and iOS are adding augmented reality tweaks to their respective platforms, and third-party app developers are also jumping on the AR bandwagon.

To dip a toe into the AR waters, start with Snapchat (for Android and iOS). Install the photo and video messaging app, open the camera screen, and tap anywhere on the scene. Snapchat will immediately display a variety of AR stickers, which you can preview with a tap. Then adjust your angle, place the sticker where it fits best, and take a photo or video as normal.

If Snapchat isn't for you, you can still enjoy AR on your phone. A few examples: PGA Tour AR (for iOS only) places golf holes on top of nearby surfaces like your kitchen counter, Inkhunter (for Android and iOS) lets you preview tattoos on your skin before you apply any needles, and the Ikea Catalog app (for Android and iOS) will drop AR versions of furniture into your real rooms so you can check out how they look.

LOOK UP INFORMATION

With a little help from the Google Lens technology built into Google Photos for Android (it's not yet available in the version of the app for iOS, although Google says it's coming soon), you can snap an image of anything and then receive information about that object.

To employ this trick, use Google Photos to open any image, then tap the Google Lens button, which looks like a simplified camera shape, at the bottom of the screen. The software will recognize an object in the photo, whether it's a historical landmark or a type of flower, and provide information about it. Think of it like a visual search tool, recognizing everything from celebrities to famous works of art.

If you own a Google Pixel phone, you can also access Lens through Google Assistant. Press and hold the Home button to bring up the Assistant, then tap the Google Lens button on the lower right and point your camera at a target. Tap the screen to confirm that the pictured item is the one you want to learn about, and information will pop up on the display.

I was one of the lucky ones—and trust me, you don’t want to get this.

Battling coronavirus is an experience that will forever be etched in my mind. I had what’s considered a mild case, but even in its weakest form, this virus is brutal. Now that I’ve recovered, I’m sharing my story because I want people to take this situation seriously. Others won’t be so lucky to face coronavirus head-on and come out the other side alive. To turn things around, we have to stay home. We have to fight this battle together—and we have to win.

Where it all began

My boyfriend and I have been trying to trace our steps back to where we first came into contact with coronavirus, and we think it was the night we went out to celebrate his sister-in-law’s 40th birthday in early March. We went to a Mexican restaurant on Long Island that Friday night, and we shared lots of laughs and food. We took turns placing our straws into this mega margarita, passing it around the table.

We didn’t think anything of it at the time, of course. The news was just beginning to report the spread of COVID-19 in America, so it wasn’t exactly at the forefront of my mind. I was still living my life just as I always had—riding the train to work each day, working long hours, going out with friends and family, and, yes, sharing margaritas. Sharing food and drinks is one of the everyday habits that could (and should) change forever after coronavirus.

Looking back now, I think that must have been the start of it all. My boyfriend, Luis, began showing symptoms on Monday, but we assumed it was a typical cold. He works from home, so we figured it would just blow over. He had body aches and a minor fever for five days, but it didn’t seem a cause for concern. Then it took me down.

Working in the midst of chaos

I worked for a home-textile company at the time, and even though news about coronavirus was all around us, we continued to work as usual. In fact, we received twice as many deliveries from China that week, as its factories were back up and finally running again. People in the office began to get something that seemed like a cold virus, but most of them still kept coming to work.

My symptoms began on Monday, March 16. It had been a week since Luis had been sick. It all began with a low fever, about 99 to 100 degrees. I felt really weak, but I still went to work. By the day’s end, I told my boss I had to leave. At this point, coronavirus had begun to take over New York, so I was told to work from home. On Tuesday, the headache started. It was so intense that I had to lie down—it was too difficult to keep my head up. The pain was mainly behind my eyes, like a very heavy sinus headache.

From bad to worse

By the end of the week, I knew something was off. This wasn’t what a typical illness felt like. Everything hurt. I felt a bit disoriented, and the headache became debilitating. Luis and I decided it was time I seek medical help. My fever was only 100.6 degrees, but it felt like my skin was being pulled in opposite directions. That’s when I got really scared. My knees, hands, and even my earlobes hurt. My entire body tingled like it had fallen asleep.

We went to nearby urgent care, where I filled out paperwork and waited for the doctor. After examining me, the doctor said he was certain I would test positive for coronavirus, but gave me the option to test if I wanted to know for sure. He was confident that I’d contracted it from Luis. I opted to be tested, but I didn’t receive my results until a week later.

After the fact, I learned that quick results are only given at the hospital. The test consisted of the doctor putting a very long cotton swab as far up my nose as possible—it felt like it went to my forehead. He sent me home with advice to take Tylenol but said there was nothing more he could do for me. He also stressed the importance of staying hydrated. On the way home, we bought whatever Tylenol we could find at the store.

Finding medication, along with many other essentials, is difficult right now—which makes things extra hard for the people who really need it.

The peak

That Saturday evening was the absolute worst. My fever spiked to 101.8 degrees, and I couldn’t sleep. I was sweating profusely, and my knees, hips, and back were in excruciating pain. It was as though I had run a marathon that I never trained for. I couldn’t shake it. I lost my sense of taste and smell, which led me to over-seasoning my food in the hopes that I could taste something. It didn’t work. Then I developed stomach pain and diarrhea. Oddly enough, the dry cough I developed only arrived at the very end. My symptoms were reversed, according to most of the anecdotes I’ve heard about the novel coronavirus.

As I lay there, just trying to survive each day, my fear of having to go to an already overwhelmed hospital was palpable. I was terrified that I’d be forced to seek help and that there wouldn’t be enough doctors, nurses, ventilators, or beds to help me. I was scared that there was no cure and no vaccine. The thought of being alone, and possibly dying alone, in the hospital, weighed heavily on my thoughts. I didn’t know how much worse I was going to get, and I feared the uncertainty of it all.

My fever finally broke the following Wednesday. I went to bed that night, and the next morning I awoke to a perfect 98.6-degree temperature that remained consistent. It was such a relief. Two days later, the health department called me with the news that I’d tested positive for COVID-19. By then, I was feeling mostly back to myself again, except for a lingering dry cough.

What I wish I’d known earlier

Looking back, I really wish that people had taken this virus more seriously earlier. In New York City, we all live on top of one another, and even just taking the train to work is exposing us. I wish people understood how severe this is, even when you get a “mild” case, like mine. I know a lot of doctors are talking about possibly having immunity after contracting the virus, but I’m still wearing a mask in public from now on. While we don’t know if it’s at all possible, I don’t want to catch this again. I’m not taking chances. I know they say the media blows things out of proportion, but that’s not true with this. This was really painful, and we got lucky.
