Verona officer involved in accident

A Verona police Officer, 39-year old Jehiel Middleton, who lives at Crane, was involved in a two-vehicle crash this morning when he pulled onto the shoulder of highway 60, near Farm Road 1160, and U-turned directly into the path of a pickup driven by 52-year old William Martin of Aurora.

Middleton suffered minor injuries. A passenger in the Martin pickup, 38-year old Kevin Fulkerson of Aurora suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken to St. John’s Aurora hospital.

The accident happened about 11:50am this morning. The link to the Highway Patrol report is below.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch

Lawrence county is included in the Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 2am.
Barry county is not.
A line of thunderstorms is expected to develop. Currently, there's a
line trying to form. There are some storms now up near Butler in Bates
county, but a line is expected to form from there back SW into Kansas,
and then move our way. We'll keep you informed.

Breaking News- 56-year old male being taken by ambulance to a landing zone at Marionville to be life-flighted to hospital in Springfield. Accident was a pickup vs. tractor trailer. The victim was unbelted, and thrown 25-feet.

This is a reminder about our Board Candidate Forum this coming Wednesday, March 31, in the Aurora High School Commons. We’ll start at 4 p.m. and be finished by 5:30 p.m. Dan Johnson has graciously agreed to be our master of ceremonies. Tentative plans call for each board candidate to introduce himself/herself and then we’ll open up the dialogue for questions.

The committee decided to seek questions from district employees and patrons so that we’ll have some parameters to get the dialogue rolling. If you’d like to email your questions for the board candidates to me or Dan Johnson before the end of the day Tuesday, we would appreciate it a great deal. Please make plans to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The event is being sponsored by the Aurora R-8 District, the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and the Aurora Education Association. Joann Hunter and her students, as well as Pam Pippin and Opaa Food Services will be helping us out with the refreshments.

The election is April 6^th. Candidates for the two positions include: Carolyn Swartz, Dr. Charles Foltz, Melanie Mayberry and Steve Bryan. Please make plans to attend.

Aurora woman hurt in crash

The Missouri Highway Patrol says a Wednesday night crash (Mar. 24) in Lawrence County sent a young woman from Aurora to St. John's in Springfield for treatment.
18-year-old Donna M. Nesbitt was driving a 1999 Oldmobile along County Road 2220, just on the eastern edge of her hometown around 7:50 p.m. when the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and smashed into a tree. Nesbitt sustained only minor injuries in the crash. For more information, click below

Drug raid in Aurora

The Aurora Advertiser reports:
On Monday of this week, members of the Aurora Police Department served a search warrant at 23 West Anderson and subsequently arrested two individuals, according to Interim Police Chief Pat Jenkins.
Officers seized more than a half-pound of marijuana, along with several thousand dollars in cash, a firearm, drug paraphernalia and small amounts of methamphetamine, cocaine and Xanax.

Small plane crash at Mt. Vernon

Rescue and ambulance are being called to the Mt. Vernon airport to a
report of a small plane that has crashed.
Ambulance reports indicate that the small plane did crash, but the two passengers were not injured.

Accident involving an ambulance

About 500pm - St. John's Ambulance "Medic 81" reported that they were
involved in a crash at Highway 39 and PP, about halfway between Aurora &
Mt. Vernon. Aurora rural rescue and also two other ambulances were
called to the scene. Apparently, 81 was in the process of transporting
a patient when the accident occurred. Within just a few minutes, the
rescue units were called off, as apparently no one was injured in the
crash. Still awaiting the highway patrol report for more information....

More fun today

Police and rescue crews have had an interesting day today.

About 11am this morning, a Police chase was underway. Lawrence county deputies were chase a car on county roads in the Verona area. Eventually, the driver drove into a creek bed just north of Verona on highway P.

Ambulance and rescue crews were then called, as the female driver appeared to be unconscious.

An accident was reported on Business 60, near the west Casey’s store in Aurora about 330pm this afternoon. No other information was available.

The Tri-County Sentinel has an additional report on the accident Monday
involving an Aurora School Bus.

A 16-year-old student was taken to a local hospital following a crash
involving a bus from the Aurora school district this morning. (Monday,
Mar. 15)
The Missouri Highway Patrol says 16-year-old Scott R. Crumm, of Aurora
sustained minor injuries in the 7:03 a.m. collision and was transported
to St. John's Community Hospital in Aurora.

Accident & Fire on Olive St.

About 7:30pm tonight, Aurora Fire and Rescue were called to a two-car
crash near the old MFA Mill on Olive street in Aurora. It was reported
that one of the vehicles was on fire. At the same time, police reported
that the drivers of both cars ran from the scene. Reports from the
scene indicated that a small car rear-ended a pickup truck, and the car
caught fire. Fire crews put the fire out quickly. Police, however,
were still searching for the two drivers. Both vehicles were reportedly
owned by people from Verona.

Car Vs Bus

I turned the scanner on this morning, just in time to hear an accident
between a car and school bus
at 1200 and ZZ highway.
Scanner reports indicated at least 18 on the bus. Apparently, a car
turned in front of the bus.
The driver of the car was taken to the hospital.
At first, no one was on the bus was reported injured, but a few minutes
later, some of the kids on the
bus were being transported to St. Johns, Aurora.
Ambulance, rescue, Lawrence county sheriff and others reported to the scene.

Missing man found Dead

The body of Ernest Jensen, the missing Newton County man whom Monett and Pierce City firefighters searched for over the weekend, was found last evening.

According to Captain Richard Leavens with the Newton County Sheriff's Department, Jensen was found under brush in a pasture around 5:30 p.m. by a neighbor checking livestock. The body was located about one mile west of the Jensen home near the Smackout access off Highway 60, between Pierce City and Granby in Newton County.

A young man from Cassville, one of several people busted in connection with a string of burglaries has been sentenced in Lawrence County, which leaves just one more suspect in this group to close out the matter.
18-year-old Joseph W. Grant was sentenced by Judge Scott Sifferman Tuesday (Mar. 9) to three years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of felony second-degree burglary and one count of felony stealing. The sentences will run concurrent with each other. The charges were filed on Dec. 25, 2009

Storm warning to the west

A warning was just issued along the Missouri/Kansas border. This storm produced dime sized hail as it went through Baxter Springs, KS.

This storm is moving almost due north, and won’t affect our immediate area. However, other storms are developing to the west. We are watching them.
