Many people see lifecoaching as some sort fraudulent business where supposed experts at “life” help people to improve their own situations. This raises the question of how legitimate is life coaching as a home based business.

Life coaching jobs are not easy to come by if you do not know what you are doing.

Anyone planning on being a life coach needs to be aware of this. If you think you are going to earn a full time income just selling your time for money then you must be very sure of your business model to charge the correct rates.

Just think about it for a moment, life coaching books do not tell you this bit.

If you wanted to earn thirty thousand dollars from life coaching in a year and you do it all in hour long appointments, do you know how many appointments that actually is?

Let me tell you…

If you were comfortable charging one hundred dollars as session, you would have to do three hundred sessions over a year to make that type of money.

That’s three hundred people you need to find that want to pay you that sort of money for lifecoaching.

That’s three hundred hours of work you need to do on top of all your sales and marketing efforts as well as the general administration of running a business.

Life coaching courses do not teach you about the realism of what it takes to run a life coaching business.

It is near on impossible to find three hundred coaching clients consistently year on year unless you are a celebratory so you need to find another way of earning money.

You need to understand how to use products as well as your services so your time is leveraged in a better way.

You need to be able to sell coaching programmes, introductions seminars and workshops along with group sessions.

This is how lifecoaching can pay you a full time income whilst working part time hours. The secret is to find a market where people really need your help and experience in their own.

Being a life coach is a very rewarding and legitimate business if you know what you doing. If you don’t, then you are going to be climbing a steep learning curve.

Anyone, including you can improve their selling skills and to hit your targets.

If you have been searching the internet for something, you will usually end up with a life coach site popping up in your results at some point. Life Coaching has evolved over the years and continues to change and grow – but what is life coaching, how do you choose a life coach, and what should you be aware of?

Life Coaching Past:
Life Coaching really emerged, noticeably, about 10 years ago. Most life coaching was advertised as Executive Coaching or Leadership Coaching and they were usually hired by corporations for staff or individual training. With the onset of in-house corporate training teams, the need for Executive Coaches diminished and many sought other areas to continue coaching in. Since then, there are now life coaches that coach in every area of life you can think of and then some. Many life coaches specialize in one or two main life areas but many still coach in multiple life areas. Originally, life coaches were people who had some kind of previous work experience before going into coaching. Most Executive Coaches came out of the corporate business world and as an Executive Coach or Leadership Coach, were able to make great incomes. Many of these past Executive Coaches also have become Client Attraction or Marketing Coaches in today’s climate and their services are provided to corporations still but mostly to small or solo businesses or individuals.

Life Coaching Now:
Now life coaching is common, easy to find and is for businesses and individuals and can be called just about anything. Today, there are many life coach training schools but there are huge disparities between the qualities of education students receive from school to school. In fact, there are no required educational standards that a life coach school must follow/provide and there is no regulation of the life coach industry. Anyone can call themselves a Life Coach and open a practice – buyer beware becomes a very serious phrase to remember. There are now a couple of professional organizations, such as the International Coaching Federation, which as a professional membership organization, is working diligently to establish coaching standards, life coach school standards and looking at types of regulations that could benefit the industry and consumers.

There are now between 10,000 and 20,000 life coaches that are providing services to customers. There are an increasing number of people pursuing becoming a life coach. Many people want to help others but many think they can earn a tremendous amount of money while being able to work at home in their pjs, part-time. If only it was that easy. Today’s world of having a web based business and all it entails has become very complicated and it isn’t as cheap in start-up costs either. Most life coaches are earning much less than $20,000 a year because they don’t have enough clients. Many coaches fail because you have to be a person who can structure their own time while working from home. When you work in a business, it provides structure that you work within. At home, there is no structure except what a person creates and it is all too easy to not be structured. Marketing has become a huge part of daily life for life coaches, much more than ever before and many have taken marketing to an incredible level of hard selling. Those ‘coaches’ providing marketing or small business start-up coaching have created a huge income based industry but it has also gained tremendous competition over the last few years.

Niche Is In:
Niche in life coaching is the current theme – this means that a life coach ‘specializes’ in one or a few areas only. There are many life coaches though who still would be considered general life coaches and offer a much broader range of coaching services. The market is pushing life coaches to have specific niche’s quite hard and explain that the public prefers ‘specialists’ and are willing to pay more for them. It is rather like the medical profession, you have generalists, generalists with a smaller focus, specialists with a broad focus and specialists with very specific focus topics. So, everyone entering coaching is told to have a niche; it could be life coaching, client attraction, marketing, public relations, Christian, organization, health, financial and many, many more areas that ‘coaching’ is being offered in.

Buyer Beware:
Throughout my research, I was totally amazed at how few life coaches will post their prices but also, and perhaps even more importantly, they do not post their educational or work experience! I don’t know about you, but I’m not really interested in sharing my dreams and goals with someone unless they are qualified and that means having work, life and educational experience in their ‘niche’ or coaching areas. I’ve asked many other coaches, and some of them are very well known and successful, and been told that education and experience are not important! So, I guess from that, if someone worked at the local animal shelter and didn’t graduate from high school, they are just as well qualified to provide life coaching services as everyone else. NOT in my book. We check out loads of information before we buy a car, before we choose a doctor, and even before we purchase a mattress. Why wouldn’t it mean something about what education and work/life experiences a life coach has? So, buyer beware!

Marketing and using psychology to sell whether on the web or in ‘real’ life, is something every business uses. Unfortunately, the web is unregulated and you cannot check things out and be secure that the information you get is honest and truthful. There is no Consumer Reports or Better Business Bureau for the Internet. The science of selling is intense and is geared at: getting visitors to give e-mail address for a ‘free’ gift so they have you in the mailing data base; use words and colors to attract you and make you ‘trust’ them, offer free material to read and low priced items and then you’ll receive e-mails about tele-seminars, videos, guest speakers, and high cost products/memberships/mentorships and mastermind groups. Many coaches are genuine but how do you tell the difference without making many painful, expensive and time consuming mistakes. Also read the fine print, many web businesses do not have guarantees or refunds available. Look for coaches who belong to national organizations, who post their credentials (experience and education), and did they graduate from a life coaching or coaching program or school? You can’t trust testimonials often, due to a business may have provided services to hundreds but you will only see the few who wrote glowing testimonials, a site that has ratings on it is great but can be doctored, asking to speak to a former client is the best method of checking out a particular coach business, even many former clients is better. I hope there will be some type of review system devised someday, as in your community word gets around quickly about a company, but on the internet you don’t have that check and balance system available. So, buyer beware!

Why people should try Life Coaching:
Life Coaching is an awesome way for people to stay motivated, keep their focus, gain self-insights and strive to achieve their goals. Life Coaching deals with the here and now and goes forward from there, it is an action based co-active coaching style that is not like therapy which deals with past life events and more psychological issues. A life coach should have the educational/work/life experiences and tools necessary to meet the needs of their customers and if not, then say so and refer the customer to a life coach that does. I recently tried to get a referral network started at the life coach school I attended, so that I and others would know where to refer a customer if I felt their needs could be better met by another. Only two other coaches felt secure enough to put their strengths out there – no one else!

In today’s busy, fast-paced world, it is often filled with stress, little personal support and difficult to achieve your goals or solve problems. Life Coaching is a great means to help a person with achieving their goals, solving problems, getting the support they need so that life is less difficult and overall, improved.

What to look for in a Coach:
Tips for you, as a customer in choosing a life coach include: know ahead of time what you want to achieve with a life coach and be able to answer how a coach can best work with you and you with them. It is also helpful to have an idea on how long you are willing to be in coaching before you expect to achieve your results and how much you can afford; research different life coach websites and read their articles, newsletters and check out their education/work/life experience and training; interview 3 different coaches – include in the interview all your questions on experience, prices, examples of accomplishments related to your goal, how long do they think it would take to achieve your goal, explain how you prefer to work with a coach and ask what their style of coaching is; ask for two references that had goals similar to yours; and most importantly, make sure the life coach you choose is one that you ‘connect’ with or that ‘feels right’ to you. Other possible questions can be asking what the life coach feels are their strengths and weaknesses. Also be cautious if you get the impression that the life coach may end up ‘telling you what to do’ or pressuring you into goals or avenues that you do not want and they seem more the agenda of the coach than yours.

Life Coaching is supposed to be about the customer and what they want to achieve and their style of learning/growing/achieving through the process of reaching their goals. It is not about the life coach. In fact, every life coach’s goal should be to put themselves out of business. If coaching were done well, then eventually, fewer people would need it. As the saying goes, ‘teach them to fish rather than feeding them fish and they will never go hungry’. Costs for life coaching services can typically run $300-$600 a month and some will go to $300 or more an hour. Some coaches actually earn $18,000 hour. If the life coaches you check-out don’t publish their costs, ask.

What is the future of Life Coaching?
Where is Life Coaching going in the future? While the economy and the increasing stress of everyday life is severely hurting the quality of people’s lives, life coaching will continue to grow in the number of people it serves as well as the number of life coaches entering the field. The number of people utilizing the web and becoming web based businesses will continue to increase the number of coaches who provide marketing, client attraction and who start business types of services.

One of the newer life coaching waves coming is ‘Wellness Coaching’ which is similar to health coaching. Of concern to me is that many, who are entering this ‘niche’, receive only 20 hrs of training. Many life coaches practicing health or wellness coaching have not checked their state’s laws on what they can and cannot coach on in this ‘niche’. A life coach cannot treat, diagnose, cure, prescribe or provide counseling. As a Holistic Practitioner, Certified Life Coach and Licensed Social Worker, I fear for people receiving life coaching services on health related subjects from life coaches with so little background in health and thus the potential for harm of the customer may occur. This is my concern and opinion which is shared by some and not by others. The pressure for more specific specialization, ‘niching’, will likely increase as well.

Will social media change the face of coaching? That’s unknown at this time. There are many blogs and forums now that people can access for support for their specific needs, meet and get to know other people interested in the same things. The world has gotten smaller and it is much easier to find people to talk to on the web, yet we are more isolated in our ‘real’ lives than ever before.

I envision the complexities of marketing, which include free give aways, membership groups, increased administrative time (which means less time for coaching), hard selling and heavy marketing will continue to increase, as well. I envision there will be expanded Coaching Schools that provide coaching education that gives core basics for all types of coaching and then gives additional education in specific areas of specialty types of coaching. These will greatly lead to better qualified service providers. I found it amazing, how many coaches actually came out of the computer field from computer programming, IT support, web design and such. I do hope that something can be done to make sure the competency, skill, education, and experience of life coaches becomes more uniform and is not as much a ‘shooting in a barrel’ experience for customers to find truly skilled and dedicated coaches.

In conclusion, life coaching has gone from corporate America to mainstream. The benefits of life coaching are becoming better known and there are many gifted life coaches available – but you will have to do some weeding first. Life Coaching can improve the quality of your life and even your physical and mental health and thus, it is hoped, it may be covered by health insurance as pro-active services someday. In the mean time, life coaching is affordable and easy to find. If you are in search of life coaching for a very specific area of your life or goal, there is likely a life coach that covers it. But the bottom line is that it is up to the consumer to pick the ‘right’ life coach for them and if it doesn’t work for you, then stop and switch to a life coach that will ‘fit’ you better. Life coaching has evolved considerably and will continue to do so and in 6 years, we’ll write another article updating you on how things have, yet again, changed.

This is #12 in a series of 20 articles. Each one builds upon the one before it. My purpose in presenting these articles is to take you step by step in the process of creating your life from the inside out moving you from where you are to where you want to be-in addition, I include some words of wisdom that will help you along the way.

In the last coaching article, I wrote about the conscious and the subconscious mind. They both are key in learning to reprogram your mind to think in ways that are positive and promote greater success in your life. The conscious mind is the gatekeeper of the subconscious mind. When it is off duty, anything can be impressed on the subconscious mind, good or bad. We want only positive, good impressions to pass through to the subconscious so being in a happy, positive frame of mind-feeling good is key. It is hard work to try to keep the negative out, but with repetition and practice we can get good at it. It will change your life for the better and that is what we are here for.

Today, I am writing about affirmations and how they are very powerful.
When you change your negative self talk statements from negative to positive, you are in essence creating a positive affirmation. What is an affirmation? It is a statement of a positive action that is already completed. For example, going back to the weight loss example of 20 lbs. It is a statement that describes what you look like after having lost the 20 lbs.: “I am confidently wearing my new, designer black suit and it is moving with me instead of me moving with it.”
You really just visualize yourself in the suit and describing the feeling it gives you.

Here are the steps to creating a good affirmation:
Always start with the words “I AM”.
Use the present tense which mean right in the present here and now. Of course it is stated in the positive.
Don’t make it too wordy and focus on specifics.
Include descriptive and emotional or feeling words.
Another example would be. I am excitedly and enthusiastically reading this article and motivated to change my life right now today!

Here are some weight loss affirmations I’d like to share since we used that example:
I made these up for a workshop that I presented and had the people attending keep these affirmations take them with them wherever they go. I made them on 2 by 1 inch cards so they could go in a pocket or wallet. Whenever they would feel down or feeling about to revert back to an old unproductive habit, they would whip them out and start repeating them:
I am optimistically and excitedly rewarding myself for small positive steps.
I am releasing negative, discouraging thoughts.
I am systematically losing weight and keeping it off permanently.
I am forgiving myself when I make a mistake.
I am disciplining myself to exercise at least three times a week.
I am easily creating wonderful, delicious healthy foods to eat.
I am inspired to achieve my weight loss goals.
I am feeling strong and flexible from exercising.
I am loving and smiling at the body I see in the mirror.
I am deserving of bliss, joy, and love.

Remember in tip #2 I had you write out what an area of your life would look like if it were ideal? Take that area and write as many affirmations about it as you can.

There are 3 main types of services given by life coaches. These are as follows:

One on one coaching sessions. These types of sessions are usually held via telephone and followed by worksheets sent via email or facsimile. These coaching sessions can be incredibly powerful tools to making big changes in your life. People participate in life coaching sessions to make career transitions, family relationship transitions, to find balance in their lives, to find fulfillment in their careers, to improve their health and wellness, to find peace and tranquility in their daily grind, and for many other reasons. The fees vary across the board. However, the general estimate for life coaching fees is from $100 to $400 per hour.

Webinars. Webinars are incredibly convenient. They are basically workshops done online. You can attend them live or watch and listen to pre-recorded ones. They are usually done via telephone and internet and are interactive. If you attend a live webinar, you will usually be joined by several other people who will also ask questions. Webinars are a great way to get a taste of life coaching, get to know the life coach’s guiding style, and find out what you can gain from a one on one life coaching session. Usually people call the life coach after the webinar to discuss more about themselves and see if they are a good match for one on one telephone life coaching sessions. The price of webinars is usually substantially lower than one on one coaching fees.

Live workshops. These workshops are usually in person or via internet. The life coach usually inspires you and motivates you to make changes during these workshops. The workshops usually focus on specific topics or goals and several people attend at the same time. While some workshops are very interactive, others are not. This will all vary depending on the style of the life coach who is presenting the workshop. They are a good choice for people who need a little push once in a while or who need a little bit of motivation to get things started and continue doing the work themselves. The life coaching fees for the workshops are usually somewhere between the coaching fees of one on one live sessions and webinars.

Life coaching fees can also vary greatly depending on the amount of hours you sign up for at the beginning of your relationship with the life coach. While some coaches are more flexible with their session packages, others do not bend the rules whatsoever.

Life coaching fees are a consideration you should discuss during your very first encounter with the coach to ascertain that 1. You have confidence and rapport with the life coach, and 2. Your goals are important enough to you to pay the life coaching fees to help you find it in yourself to obtain them.

People are desperate to drop those extra pounds and most are willing to spend lots of money and try just about any diet that pops up.

The problem is that the weight loss for most people is temporary at best.

Why is it that we can’t invent the ‘magic pill’ that will cure us of excess weight once and for all?

The answer lies with the reason that you gained the weight in the first place.

Oh, I know, we all have a list of ‘reasons’ that we gained weight. Your personal list may include one or more of the following:

I inherited it from my family.

Age

Pregnancy

Metabolism

I don’t work out.

I love junk food, and so I can’t lose weight.

The above list can be miles long for some, but are these really the reason why a person gains weight?

For instance, lets take the junk food excuse. I know lots of very thin people that have a horrible diet and I also know over weight people that eat very healthy diets with no fast food and lots of green leafy raw vegetables in their diet.

I also know thin people who have never exercised a day in their life and over weight people who spend hours in the gym each week.

Siblings and other family members can ruin the heredity excuse. Often, not everyone is fat in the fat family, and thin families also have a few heavies in them too. People start out thin and gain weight over time and vice versa.

So what’s up?

The real key lies deep inside the human mind. The human mind is an amazing thing. Our thoughts control our breathing, digestion and blood circulation, just to name a few vital functions. Our unconscious thought can also register information about a person that we have just met and help us decide whether or not they are trustworthy in a matter of a few seconds.

Our thoughts and emotions are also linked to our bodies and how we feel.

For example, nervousness can cause stomach aches and cramps in one person and diarrhea in another person. Nerves can cause some people to eat and others not to eat at all.

So what are the most common emotions that are related to weight gain?

Here are the top 7 emotions that we have found linked to weight gain.

Feelings of insecurity

Feelings of self-rejection

Wanting to protect the body

Seeking love and fulfillment

Attempting to fulfill the self

Feelings are being stuffed inside

Unexpressed, mis-perceived & inappropriate feelings

You may relate to one or more of the above feelings and never realized that it was causing you to gain and hold onto weight. Don’t worry, you are not alone. Many never realized until they hired a coach that these hidden emotions cause some very obvious problems.

That also explains why most diet gimmicks don’t work. Its like cutting off the top of a weed and leaving the root intact. As long as the root problem, or emotion is still in your head, you can’t achieve true success in weight loss. The thoughts and feelings that got you where you are today will bring you back here again and again just like they have, don’t they?

So how can life coaching help you to lose weight?

Well, first of all, your coach will help you uncover any and all limiting beliefs that you may have related to weight. All of us are programmed from infancy with thoughts and ideas about weigh and many of them end up sabotaging us through out life. This one step alone of releasing limiting beliefs that you have been carrying with you can by itself cause weight loss after the first session.

The next step that your coach will cover will include releasing any of the above negative emotions that you may be carrying and also giving you permission to be thin.

This last point may seem strange to many. So, what do I mean by permission to be thin?

Well, you may actually not feel like others will approve of you if you lose weight. For example, what might other obese family members think if you suddenly lose weight and aren’t a victim of heredity like they are anymore? You see how this may be an issue for some, and a competent coach will make sure that you have permission to lose weight on all levels.

How fast can you expect to see results?

Well, obviously, results vary, but typically you will start to lose weight after the first session.

So what are you weighting for?!? (ha ha, just kidding!)

After all, isn’t it about time that you really take care of yourself? Don’t you deserve to be healthy? And isn’t now as good a time as any to hire a coach and lose weight once and for all and truly show the world who you really are?

Maybe you are like others and want to improve your life. Many, perhaps you too, are longing to change the bad for the good in their life. If you want more out of your life, then take action to get what you deserve. Nobody is going to give you the life of your dreams, YOU need to make your dreams come true.

Often, we don’t know how to make our dreams come true. A guide is the best way to lead you to your dreams.

If you want to know if life coaching can help you make your dreams a reality, then you can find out more information at http://sandiegolifecoach.org/. If you are serious about achieving your true potential, remember that life coaching is the map that can get you where you want to be. We look forward to being a part of your journey!

Its’ easy to do. Struggle that is. It is such a vague, ethereal concept… Life Coaching. If you want to be successful, it is best to think of how you can actually productize your coaching. If someone is going to buy coaching they need to know what they are buying.

What are the features, benefits, and solutions to problems that your coaching provides? If you don’t know the answer to these questions you have some work to do. A lot of coaches have a resistance to doing to this. I think it is the reason why so many don’t have a profitable business that actually makes them a living. You don’t want to be a part of that crowd do you?

So, here is a simple step by step outline of what you can do to overcome the challenge of marketing. This process won’t happen overnight but you can do this.

Step 1: Get clear about who you are meant to serve.
Step 2: Identify a target market
Step 3: Create a niche
Step 4: Identify the problems your target market is experiencing
Step 5: Identify how your coaching can be the solution to the problems that your target market is experiencing.
Step 6: Create programs and services that meet their needs
Step 7: Invite people in your target market to register in these programs and services.

Marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the more likely you are to actually do it. Take the time to work through these steps in your business.

Let me know your results!

By the way, if you are you a Life Coach, Business Coach, or Executive Coach Who Wants to get more clients, make more money, AND make a difference…

People are often unconscious of how often they use this skill. Every morning when you choose what clothes to wear, you are making decisions based on color schemes. Finding your preference may tell you more about yourself and how you can thrive in your life.

Purple is the highest vibration. It is often associated with healing and creativity. Ultra violet rays evoke thought’s of royalty and says ” I’m not wearing conservative red, or liberal blue, but rather a combination of the two.”

Yellow is like the sun and makes me think of joy and positive vibes. It’s loud and energetic. Red is powerful and in Some native cultures is considered the path of truth. The classic read tie is considered the “power” tie. Blue is considered ” blue collar” and true blue. Blue is a trusted color that evokes casual with professional. Balance is the key. The other key is to find your groove.

Grey style that is lacking in color makes a bland statement. Too much color just seems too abrasive and loud. Vary it up and learn what your favorite two colors are today. Turquoise is seen as a shaman color and is hard to look away from. Choose a tea mug that shows your favorite colors too. Mix up your t-shirt collection so you can mix and match your style. Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb and get a little adventurous.

I’m not saying you have to change your wardrobe or dye your hair, just have fun and observe your key colors. If you think you could benefit more from life coaching, you’re probably right. Many of the top producers in the business world are constantly working on improving their knowledge and efficiency!

Whether by article marketing, blogging or teleseminars, it doesn’t matter whether you are promoting life coaching or advertising Reiki: the methods are the same.

Here are some of the methods used and the secrets of getting clients for any of the above disciplines.

Article Marketing

Article marketing is a very popular online promotional technique at the moment, and is used to promote just about anything on the internet. It involves writing articles on your niche, adding a resource that includes a link to your website and then publishing the articles on article directories. People using the directories will use the directory search facility to find an article on their topic and they either read it or copy it to use as content on their own websites.

In each of these cases, the readers are liable to click on the link on the resource and visit the writer’s website. If you are the author then you have to try to persuade the reader that it is to their advantage to make that click and visit your site. For example if you are attracting Reiki clients, you should explain the benefits of Reiki, and then offer a link to get to your Reiki site or web page.

You will also improve your Google PageRank, because you get a link back to your web page from every article directory on which your article is published, and if you do it right that could amount to several hundred one-way backlinks. One of the secrets of getting life coaching clients is to choose the right landing page for these links. If your article is on coaching, then your link should lead the reader to a page that also refers to life coaching.

Used correctly, article marketing is one of the most effective and least expensive online advertising techniques you can use for attracting Reiki clients or getting life coach clients. However, there are more methods that can be used, including:

Teleseminars

Teleseminars are not as widely used as they should be, but are an excellent means of attracting Reiki clients. All you need is a topic and to book time with a conference calling service. You can generally get a conference call facility free for up to 99 callers which should be enough for you to start with. You should advertise the seminar online, generally by email if you have an emailing list, or on your website.

However, if you are using your teleseminar for getting such clients then they are unlikely to be already visiting your website, so you should find some other means of advertising. One method is to use article marketing as above: write articles about life coaching or Reiki, and then advertise your free Reiki teleseminar in your resource. They will have to visit your website to register, and also give you their names and email addresses – the beginnings of your email list!

Use the seminar both to educate people in your discipline, and also to help them understand how you can help them to solve the problems that they have. Teleseminars work for anything, such as hypnotherapy, spiritual counseling, energy healing and any other form of alternative healing you are involved in. Once you have started, you will wonder why it took you so long to discover teleseminars.

Public Speaking

Most people never think of using public speaking as a means of attracting Reiki clients, or any forms of client for that matter! Yet if you can get involved with your local community and offer your speaking services free for church groups, local women’s institutes and any number of groups that meet regularly, you can become a mini-celebrity and people will flock to your website as you become better known.

This would naturally depend upon your own character, but if you are gregarious and get along well with people then you can easily set about getting life coaching clients, for example, by talking about the topic and educating people in what life coaching can do for them. There are plenty of groups of people that meet regularly that would love you to come and talk to them free of charge. Ask around, or check the local press for groups advertising their meeting dates and times. Go along and introduce yourself, and simply ask if they would like a free talk about life coaching one evening. Before you know it you will be inundated with phone calls for your services!

These are just some secrets of getting life coaching clients, or of attracting Reiki clients that will work for just about any service you are trying to sell or promote. Bite the bullet and give them a try, and you will never look back because not only do they work, but all three are free.

British Columbia’s West Coast is a hot-bed for life and business coaching and although the community is quite diverse in geography there are organizations like the Vancouver ICF that help bring the community together. Lets dive into an overview of the local community and how you can get involved!

Vancouver Chapter of the International Coaching Federation

The Vancouver branch of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) encourages both members and non-members to attend monthly meetings where they discuss wide-ranging issues related to life coaching. These meetings are both networking and speaking events about coaching topics including executive coaching, business coaching and leadership coaching. Meetings are scheduled monthly from September to June. ICF Vancouver also hosts socials, workshops and promotes coaching success through the Prism Awards and Coaching Awareness Week.

The ICF of Vancouver has over 200 active members in such specialties as life coaching, executive coaching, business coaching and career coaching. Trained and certified coaches may specialize in one niche, however you will find that a professional coach can help your with most of your personal and professional goals regardless of their specialization. All ICF Vancouver coaches have diverse training and backgrounds and professional designations.

So how can you get involved?
Getting involved with the Vancouver ICF is actually pretty straightforward. Just call them up! Although you will probably have a better response if you are an ICF certified coach (more on that in a moment) anyone can go to the monthly meetings, suggest topics of discussion and help guide the direction of the chapter. Chapter officials are elected annually by the membership. Currently the Vancouver chapter has over 200 members. Do any of those members stand out from the others?

Top Vancouver Coaches

Two local coaches stand out for being amongst the cream of the crop. First, 2007 Coach of the year Steve Mitten. Steve is a force in the local coaching community having served as the ICF President in 2005 and is always at the top of people’s minds when it comes to top coaches in the area. His background is in entrepreneurship have brought two separate companies to the IPO stage and as such is widely regarded as a top business coach in addition to his established skill set as a life coach. Steve has achieved the highest possible level of ICF coaching certification and is a Master Certified Business and Life Coach.

One of his top counter parts in Vancouver is the widely regarded Julia James. Julia was a nominee for the 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year Award and in 2008 was awarded the BNI Master Networked Award. In addition, Julia has the rare credentials of being both an ICF certified coach in addition to her Coaches Training Institute (CTI) certification. Still not enough for you? Julia and her coaching team conduct coaching in English, German, French and Spanish!

Vancouver Coaching Schools

Now that you know a little more about Steve and Julia perhaps its time to head out there and get the training to join them in the local coaching ranks! There are several options in the Lower Mainland Area and although not all of these schools have the same reputation (some are just newer than others) all have proven to be quite popular amongst coaches starting out. Here is a quick overview of the programs available at Coaches Training Institute, Erickson College and Royal Roads University.

Coaches Training Institute (CTI)
Its no wonder that CTI is a very popular training option amongst prospective Vancouver coaches. Doubling as the world’s largest coaching school, CTI is a power-house in the industry and its no different in Vancouver. Every year, CTI runs at least two programs to train local coaches in its Co-Active coach training module. The sessions are usually held at a Downtown Hotel. For all the details, contact CTI direct at 1-800-691-6008.

Erickson College
With a campus near Downtown Vancouver, Erickson is the most notable training facility in the city. Classes are also offered online to people not able to make it to the actual campus. The focus with Erickson is on leadership training and they have received high praise in this regard. To find out more about Erickson call 1-800-665-6949.

Royal Roads University
Although Royal Roads is located near Victoria BC, on Vancouver Island, it has proven to be another decent option of Lower Mainland individuals looking to successfully complete their life coach training. At Royal Roads, the focus is on executive training and most people who take this program have at least several years of real-world business experience. Its a good option if you are looking to complete a more formal training program by an accredited university. For all the information please contact Royal Roads at 1-800-788-8028.

Vancouver: An Active Coaching Community
As you have probably noted, with many training options, successful coaches and an active ICF branch Vancouver is a hotbed of life coaching. There are also many opportunities for newcomers and established community veterans to increase their involvement in the community. It is up to you, the coach, to get as involved as you choose!
