When my friends and I are wandering around on South Congress, it is inevitable that we will stop by Doc’s Motorworks for a beer…or two…or three. They always have a sporting game showing on the TVs plus, they are dog friendly! They have a pretty large outdoor seating area where our furry friends can relax with us. The atmosphere is laid back and casual.

Doc’s Motorworks runs some pretty great drink specials throughout the week. They do a good job with tasty bar food, from burgers and tacos to hot wings and my personal favorite,  sweet potato fries.

Their Happy Hour runs Monday – Friday from 4pm – 7pm. Deals include:

Did you know that in France, Happy Hour is called … “Happy Hour”? You don’t have to speak the language to enjoy the experience! Bistrot Mirabelle’s brand new Happy Hour is from 3-6:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. It includes their “Bistrot Mirabelle” Burger for only $6, topped with gruyere and house made pickles then served with pomme frites. Salads and appetizers are $2 off the regular price, so try the traditional Nicoise Salad, the signature Mirabelle “Hacke” Salad, Duck Rillettes or Onion Soup Gratinee.  House wines by the glass are priced at $5. If you want to upgrade your wine from the basic “house” option, take $1 off the glass and $5 off the bottle price. Their full bar menu is expected soon. Brunch is now on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and is highlighted by a signature champagne cocktail, “La Vie En Rose,” made with rosé Champagne and rose water. Je t’aime!

Korean Beef Street Tacos at PF Chang's

At PF Chang’s, Happy Hour is 3-6 p.m. daily and offers drinks, dim sum, and street fare. The “3 to 6″ theme applies not only to the time, but to the specials as well. Choose from a multitude of apps like $3 Spring rolls, $4 Crab Wontons and $6 Spare Ribs. Be sure to try favorites such as Korean Beef or Mahi-Mahi Street Tacos. Drinks are also priced in the $3-$6 range, with $3 import drafts, $4 import bottles and $5 select wines, sake and wells. Specialty cocktails are $6. That’s already a great buy, but on Mondays and Tuesdays, they make the deal even sweeter with bottled wine at 1/3 off all day long.

Wednesday

Roaring Fork's "Big Ass" Burger

Roaring Fork is the smart foodie’s number one pick for happy hour, with discounts on favorites such as fresh Yucatan-Style Shrimp served with diced avocado, lime and tomato or Crab Cakes with green chile butter and remoulade. Other addictive choices are the Hickory Smoked Salmon with sliced baguette and the appropriately named “Big Ass Burger.”  If you’re saving up calories for holiday parties, try the light Ahi Tuna Tartare with mango, avocado and pepita crackers. Is your mouth watering yet? It should be, especially when these amazing apps are $4 off on weekdays from 4-7 p.m. Beer, wine and drinks are $2 off. Hurry, your barstool is waiting!

Thursday

Fabi and Rosi’s Champagne Thursday literally offers champagne taste on a beer budget. It’s half-priced Champagne all night! If the weather’s nice, lounging on the patio with a $5 starter and a glass of bubbly sounds fabulous, dahling. Appetizers include garlicky, buttery Escargot and an Artisian Cheese board, specially priced from 5-6:30 p.m., along with $2 off beer and wine.

Friday

Eleven Plates is the place to mingle for happy hour, which occurs weekdays from 3-6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 3-5 p.m.  This Westlake bistro presents $5 select small plates with a sharp, chef-driven edge. Enjoy visions of Chuck Sliders, Mac & Cheese with Pork Belly, or Truffle Fries dancing in your head. Libations included on the happy hour list are $2 off all beer and $3 off wine by the glass. If you socialize too long and need dinner for the family “on the fly”, pick up their “Full Bird Walking”.  It’s a whole roasted chicken to go with sides for 4 people priced at just $18. That’s chicken feed, pun intended.

Saturday shopping is full of hustle and bustle so if the crowds and the traffic are stressing you out, on your way home stop at Cipollina and “un-wined”. Have one of their small plates such as P.E.I. Mussles, Charcuterie, or Pork Belly with cherry tomatoes, fennel and pickled onion for half price. Sip on an aperitif or glass of sparkling wine, also at half price. Happy Hour at Cipollina is daily from 5-6 p.m.

Sunday

Taverna is the perfect place to bring visiting friends and relatives for a joyful patio brunch.  Their menu offers classic items like Eggs Benedict with choice of ham, bacon or crabmeat, Taverna Frittata, Omelets, French toast and life-altering New Orleans Style Beignets. “Eggs Al Forno all ‘Olio Tartufato” features pan fried eggs and sausage served over garlic bread with a hint of delectable Truffle Oil. Mimosas and Bellinis, offered for just $1 with an entree purchase, are undoubtedly the biggest reasons for merriment.  Brunch is flowing every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with complimentary parking until 5 p.m. at City Hall.

With this beautiful Fall weather, I know many people (me especially!) and their pets are enjoying sitting outside at restaurants and bars in Austin.

I had lunch for the first time at Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse located at 1900 South First. I think I may have finally found my favorite restaurant in Austin! The menu features all vegetarian food, with quite a few vegan options as well. When I arrived there was plenty of outdoor seating, with a nice shade screen overhead. My group and I found a table right next to the Doggie H2O station that also featured a container of dog treats on top. Love this!

Since this was a lunch visit, I did not partake in any fun beverages however, they have a great array of drinks. Their coffee menu is extensive, as well as their tea options (over 25!). They do have a daily happy hour from 3pm-7pm featuring beers (to name a few: Fireman’s Four, Negra Modela, Real Ale, Tecate, Lonestar), sustainable red and white wines, sakes and their well-known hangover cure, “the Leveler” (Guiness, expresso and chocolate). Happy Hour Specials are $2 off most bottles/cans of beer, $3 off draft beers and $1 off wine.

Glass Ceilings. Victoria’s Secret Models. The Urban Myth of “One Size Fits All”. (Whose bright idea WAS that, anyway? The only “one size fits all” I’ve ever had work for me was a scarf.) It’s enough to drive a girl to drink, and THAT is why some genius… somewhere…. somehow, decided to invent…Ladies Night.

Clearly, girls need a place to go and hang out with a bunch of other girls, shrug off the day and let our way too restrictive ponytails down.  You know what I mean, it’s the age old story. Annies Cafe and Bar Here is another that isn’t officially for “Ladies” but we DO love our Tee Martoonies. Martini Thursdays at Annies brings you $6 Martinis from 7pm to 12am. That’s a very good reason to gather the girls!

Cantina Laredo Half priced means you can have twice as much fun! Cantina Laredo’s Thursday Night special is half priced Wine and Margaritas from 4pm-10pm, and it’s only for the ladies. It also coincides with happy hour from 4pm-7pm, so you can also enjoy their specially priced apps if you come early.

Salt Lounge – A DJ Spins, get $7 Specialty Cocktails (mixologist style, so they’re pretty special), and enjoy complimentary passed appetizers. (That’s “FREE FOOD” to the rest of us.) At Salt Lounge in The Domain, it’s ladies night from 4pm-Midnight. You can even enjoy a movie at the iPic in UBER luxury, and push a button to make your chair recline all by itself.

Cool River Be the coolest chick in town. Thursdays from 4-8pm, enjoy $4.50 House Wine $4.50 Cosmos, $1.94 Margaritas and Texas Tangerine Martinis. After that, there’s dancing, so stick around for the music, but do try not to fall off  your stilletos.

Fabi & Rosi This isn’t exactly a ladies night, but it is definitely a girls favorite. WHY? Because on Thursdays, CHAMPAGNE prices start at $3 for glasses and $11 for bottles. In our book, a place that offers Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget always gets the girl!

Lucy’s Retired Surfers This one isn’t for Dudes, no sir. Not even a Dude that LOOKS like a lady. It’s for Ladies Only! Every Thursday at Lucy’s, ALL NIGHT LONG, 7pm-2am. $3 local beer and $3 Local brands of liquor.

Apothecary Cafe and Wine Bar It may not be “just for ladies”, but where there is bubbly, there will be girls. During Brunch on Saturday 11am-3pm, it’s half off all bottles of bubby, be it Proseco, Champagne, or Cava.

If you frequent these Ladies nights instead of paying full price, you just might be able to save up enough cash to buy those Jimmy Choos you’ve been eyeballing, so lead the brigade and tell them Austinontherocks sent you!

Let’s get the important stuff out of the way. What the heck is a Hopdoddy? To get to the root of the meaning, you actually have to split the word “Hopdoddy” into two words – “Hop” and “Doddy”. “Hop” is pretty self explanatory for beer minded intellectuals. In a hopshell, it’s the female flower clusters of the hop species, Humulus Lupulus, that is used to create flavor and stability in beer. The word “Doddy” is an old Scottish nickname for an Aberdeen Angus cow. If you are inclined to learn more about cows (and who isn’t?), click this link because we aren’t talking about cows today, we’re talking about good old beer and burgers, Hop=beer Doddy=beef.

Expanding upon the fast casual boom in restaurants (those of the “walk-up-to-the-counter-and-place-your-order-and-are-a-whole-lot-better-than-McDonald’s” variety), Hopdoddy’s owners had a vision of adding in a full service bar for those who desire to be waited upon and have drink options other than beer and wine. Yes, you know of them, they are Larry Foles and Guy Villavaso of Eddie V’s/Roaring Fork/Wildfish acclaim (they recently sold ZTejas), and Chuck Smith and Larry Perdido of Austin’s pet-friendly brunch favorite, Moonshine . Their brainchild is a restaurant space that funnels you through the line -herdlike, pun intended – and  corrals you into a comfortable seating area to wait for your food. Along the way to your table, you can stop at the condiment bar and get pickles, chipotle ketchup, honey mustard, and other various condiments. There, you can also pick up non-alcoholic beverages. Your cocktail orders are taken at the table and quickly delivered to you by friendly waitstaff. When it’s cooked, runners bring your food on cute little stainless steel trays. It’s a trendy idea, and it works.

What also works, especially in Austin, is the fresh and local flair with which they have garnished the menu and atmosphere. Hopdoddy welcomes you with a large blackboard announcing that they: a) grind their own meat, b) bake their own bread, c) cut their own fries, and d) churn their own ice cream. ( I hope all that cooking isn’t being done by one lone Mom in the kitchen. ) Last but not least, to truly qualify as Austin Hip, they e) support local farms and ranches AND f) recycle and compost like crazy. Put that together in a spot on South Congress, hang a picture of Willie Nelson on the wall bigger than life, and you have AUSTIN BIG LOVE coming your way.

Magic Shroom - Field Mushrooms, Pure Luck Goat Cheese, Basil Pesto

On the Menu are Gourmet Burgers such as the “Llano Poblano” with roasted Poblano Chiles, apple Smoked bacon and pepper Jack cheese, “The Goodnight” with Mesquite BBQ sauce and Tilamook Cheddar,  and “The Buffalo Bill” with Bison, Maytag Blue Cheese, Frank’s Hot Sauce, and the aforementioned bacon.

Ahi Tuna Burger and Kennebec Fries

The “Greek” offers something for lamb lovers and is garnished with Feta, arugula, pickled red onions, cucumber and Tzatziki Sauce.  If you are watching your waistline but can’t resist the occasional burger binge, their “Continental Club” (yes, it’s named for the famous live music venue on SoCo ) is quite possibly the best Turkey Burger I have ever had; it’s nothing like the dried out, tasteless, choked down Turkey Burger of the past. Basil & Sundried Tomato incorporated in to the patty make for an immensely flavorful bite. Arugula and Bacon seal the deal and it’s packaged in a fresh made, seeded, whole grain bun.

The "Continental Club" is a healthy favorite that bursts with flavor.

There’s also vegetarian fare: the “Janis Joplin”, made with a hemp seed patty, avocado, and sprouts. If you are a Pescatarian – or just really like Ahi – you can try the Sushi Grade Ahi Tuna Burger with sprouts, teriyaki, Honey wasabi, Nori chips, and Pickled Ginger. Gluten free? NO PROBLEM! A new GLUTEN FREE BUN was just introduced at Hopdoddy, and a it’s a refreshingly light version of the bowling ball variety normally offered in the genre.  Of course, you can opt to skip the bun entirely and choose an entree salad, with or without meat additions. Hopdoddy’s Kennebec Fries are fresh cut and crispy with an option for “Chili Cheese” which is actually a dipping sauce. They aren’t smothered with chili and melted cheese, and for that,  your arteries will thank you. Unless you are a Fry Burgler like myself, and eat everyone else’s fries along with your own, a large order of fries is big enough for two.

At a recent media event, the perfect taste of Thirsty Goat Amber was presented in a perfectly frosted mug.

In the cocktail department, there’s a good selection of specialty beer, tasty margaritas, a full bar, and wine. For the innner child living inside your grown up body, booze up your milkshakes with shots of liqueur! May we suggest the Berries and Cream Shake with a shot of Frangelico, the Dark Chocolate Shake with Godiva Caramel, or the Mexican Vanilla Shake with Navaan Vanilla.  Or, order one of their  specialty cocktails such as the Black Cherry Hard Limeade. They are made with syrups that are – you guessed it – hand made “in house”, with fresh ingredients and cane sugar. Their Bloody Mary Mix is made in house too. You gotta hand it to them,  Hopdoddy is consistent.

The cool thing is, all this custom cooking isn’t reflected in the $5 -$9 prices of the burgers. Also be aware that if you like your burgers “JUST SO”, they come with lettuce, onion, tomato, mayo and mustard; if you don’t want all of that on your burger, just tell the cashier when you place your order. The Austinontherocks verdict? It’s hopdoggedy good.  So if you like your burgers well spanked, hop on out to Hopdoddy Burger Bar and give their fresh approach a try. They are at 1400 S Congress,  and you can conveniently park in the back garage and get your ticket validated –  which means FREE PARKING! Austin’s gonna love it.

I recently went with a group of friends for happy hour, which is my favorite part! Happy hour is from 4- 7 everyday and all day Sunday and Monday, with drink specials including $10 off all bottles of wine and $2 of select appetizers!! Since there were about seven of us, we decided to choose multiple appetizers at such a great price and two bottles of wine. We started with the roasted red pepper hummus with pita bread, prosciutto wrapped melon, and gorgonzola spinach artichoke dip with tortilla chips. There was also always a steady flow of warm baguettes with olive oil and vinegar on the table. One of our friends decided to get a panino as well, and it was so good that he passed it around for us all to try! He got the brie, pear, and honey panino with truffle oil and arugula. It also came with a small side of pasta. It was fresh, unique, and yummy! For wine, we chose the Crios de Balbo Rose of Malbec ’09 from Argentina and the Ugarte Cosecha Rioja ’08 from Spain. The Malbec was a nice light wine that would be very refreshing in the summer. It was soft, fruity, and sweet. Our friendly waiter recommended the Spanish wine which was more of a medium bodied luscious red wine, which I preferred because it paired nicely with our food and with the cooler weather. We completely devoured everything! It was all so good that we decided to order one more appetizer, which ended up being my favorite one. It was the happy hour cheese plate, which included: brie with olives and a spicy relish, manchego with honey, and gorgonzola with purple grapes and a guava paste. All seven of us greatly enjoyed our meal. Great food, good wine, and wonderful company made for a very fun evening : )

Apothecary is a wonderful place to spend the afternoon, sipping hot tea or coffee, while using their wireless to catch up on some work, have an afternoon panino on your lunch break, or to spend happy hour with friends! The service is always great and you can never go wrong with their diversely unique menu. It is the perfect place to try something new. I love Apothecary and I will definitely keep going back!

My personal experience there was absolutely amazing. I went with my friend Gokhan, we had both heard great things about it and when an occasion for celebration came up, we decided it would be the perfect time to try it out. We both decided to try a glass of wine, and to start with the assiette de fromages, which featured an array of tasty cheeses and fresh fruit. Everything on the menu looked incredibly delicious and since the fixed menu du jour allows you to try different options for a great price, Gokhan decided to go with that. It was a warm evening, so he chose a salad instead of a soup, which was nice and fresh with a light vinaigrette dressing. For the main course, I went with the duck and the menu du jour offered the grilled ribeye steak, so Gokhan had that. Of course, as in any authentic European restaurant, fresh baguettes were always on the table. My duck was absolutely amazing! The meat fell of the bone and paired very nicely with the dried cherry and walnut compote, which I was trying for the first time and also loved. Gokhan said that his steak was perfectly tender and that the special, homemade butter on top made for a nice touch. We both agreed that the meat just melted in our mouths. For dessert he chose the chocolate mousse and I chose one of my favorites, crème brûlée. Now, I must say that this crème brûlée was one of the best I have ever had. I was so full but I wanted more! The mousse was also delicious and so much so that we overheard the table next to us ordering a second round of chocolate mousse!

This is the perfect place to go to for a special occasion, a romantic date, or just to remember that summer you studied abroad in France. If you are on a budget, the menu du jour for $26.50 is an excellent choice and a great way to have a wonderful meal, with dessert included : ). It even changes every day, so you can keep going back for more!  I can honestly say that this was one of the most memorable food experiences I have ever had in Austin. I was pleasantly reminded of my amazing trip to France that night. The food and the service were both just perfect. This has become one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. We both left that night feeling elated after such a wonderful meal. Later, Gokhan made a comment that describes the food there perfectly. He said, “The food there isn’t just filling, it is food for the heart.”

The Ladies Margaritas (sorry guys ladies only!) are $3 and the house margaritas $4 (sigh of relief guys!).  Sushi and pizzas start at $3 so you get a big bang for your buck. This is one of my absolute Favorite places to go for happy hour because of the fantastic food and drinks at a really affordable costs. The atmosphere is fun but as I said, get there early to find your seats!

Kona Grill turned out to be the perfect start to my birthday and with the money I saved I was able to hit town all night! It’s no wonder why Austin is such a gem… you really don’t have to spend half of your salary to eat, drink, and have a great time!

We walked in around 7:00 pm to find the bar area packed (happy hour prices are only honored in this area) but luckily our friends saved us two seats.  We were greeted by friendly bar tenders who stayed attentive to our needs for our entire stay. I opted for a swirl margarita while my honey stuck to his signature Bud Light, and for $2 a pop, it’s all on me tonight .  On Thirsty Thursday’s, happy hour lasts from 5 pm to closing time at 10:00 pm, so we had all night to chat with friends and peruse the menu of half off appetizers.

It was difficult to make a final decision but we choose two great apps from the menu that were well suited to our distinctive tastes. I went with the gourmet sounding Steak Crostinis and was charmed by the delectable mini garlic crisps topped with mesquite-grilled steak medallions, garnished with a horseradish cream and red onions.  A delicious treat for any meat lover, but after garlic and onion I wasn’t going in for any kisses!  My Latin beau played it safe with his Smoked Sirloin Nachos and was not one bit sorry.  If there’s one thing Texas Land & Cattle knows, its steak, and they proved it at half the price for us!

We will now be accompanying the regulars for Thirsty Thursdays at Texas Land & Cattle whenever we can make it. Remember the happy hour prices are only good in the bar area, with the dining areas serving normal priced food and drinks.  Texas Land & Cattle has four Austin locations, one near Lakeline Mall where I visited, one on South 35 & North 35 and another on South Mopac. No matter what side of town you live on you can enjoy these great specials with your favorite people.

Daily happy hours offer $2 12oz Domestic Drafts, $3 12oz Premium Drafts, $4 Margaritas, and half price appetizers Sunday – Wednesday 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm then again from 8:00 pm to 10:00 for the best reverse happy hour in town!
