Ariz. company gets funding, names CEO

Austin Business Journal - July 16, 2007

A technology startup from Arizona has gotten a fresh infusion of cash, named a new senior management team and moved its headquarters to Austin.

RF Code Inc. -- which makes radio-frequency identification, or RFID, devices that are used to track everything from equipment and people moving through government laboratories to polar bears on the prowl in the Arctic -- has raised $13 million in a second round of funding and moved into a 12,000-square-foot office in Northwest Austin.

Commuters riding Express buses can now log onto the Web on the way to their destination.

The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (http://www.bizjournals.com/search/bin/search?q=%22Capital%20Metropolitan%20Transportation%20Authority%22&t=austin) is launching mobile WiFi service on its Express buses in a pilot program that begins this month.

The service will be available on nine coach buses. Decals show whether the bus is WiFi capable. The program ends in January 2007, at which time Cap Metro will consider expanding the service to other routes and services.

Cap Metro, in conjunction with Austin Wireless City project, also recently launched WiFi service at the Pavilion and Tech Ridge Park and Ride. WiFi will also be available at the Leander Park and Ride when it opens in early 2007.

The Leander Park and Ride will be located at U.S. Highway 183 north of FM 2243, which is also the site of the 2,200 acre Leander transit oriented development and the commuter rail station. Commuter rail service is scheduled to begin in 2008.

In other news, Cap Metro awarded a $919,000 contract to Austin Bridge and Road to begin improvements on U.S. 183 outside the future Leander Park and Ride.

Austin Bridge and Road will begin construction of the improvements, which will include adding two turn lanes each to the north and southbound lanes of U.S. 183. A separate project will include adding traffic signals to the intersection.
