GUIDELINES for the Frater Travelling Scholarship

OVERVIEW
Australian Catholic University (ACU National) is pleased to invite applications for the Frater Travelling Scholarship which was established as a result of a generous donation from Dr Bob Frater AO and Mrs Margaret Frater DSG.

Bob and Margaret Frater have sought to recognise and reward eligible teachers within the NSW or ACT Catholic systemic primary school system who display leadership qualities and commitment and whom it is thought will contribute to the continuing development and enhancement of the school system.

The scholarship supports an overseas activity, for example, a suitable conference combined with meeting appropriate colleagues in the educational field. A conference only or a short course/study tour/activity may also be considered.

GUIDELINES
Applicants should print these guidelines for future reference.

Information regarding supporting agencies
In order for the scholarship application to be considered, it should be endorsed by the relevant agency with acknowledgement by the agency that some financial assistance is required. This would mean that the agency would have to meet the recipient’s salary (including the relevant super contribution), as well as that of a relief teacher during the period of the scholarship winner’s absence. The length of absence from duties should be negotiated between the applicant/recipient, especially if it is for an extended period. The applicant must attach a statement from their agency with their application.

* Information for Applicants

1. Eligibility

Applicants must:

* be a graduate of ACU National (or one of its predecessor colleges) working in the teaching profession in a NSW or ACT Catholic systemic primary school;
* show evidence of postgraduate study (either completed or currently being undertaken) – a postgraduate degree from ACU National or current enrolment in a postgraduate course at ACU National would be an advantage but is not essential.
* have demonstrated leadership in schools;
* display a commitment to using their qualifications to work for the betterment of the educational community;
* show evidence of acceptance into a conference/activity/course - this must accompany the application.

2. Benefits

2.1 There is provision for a scholarship to be awarded each year to a total value of approximately $10,000. Depending on the applications, the Selection Committee may decide not to make an award, make one award or to award two scholarships in one year (approximately, $5,000 each).

2.2 The value of each scholarship will be determined by:

The quality and nature of the applications submitted;
*
The anticipated costs of the conference/activity/course.

3. Conditions

Conference/activity to be undertaken some stage during the financial year of July 2008 to June 2009.

After completion of the overseas period, it is required that the recipient/s make a presentation to their cohort outlining the achievements and benefits gained from having had the overseas experience. Bob and Margaret Frater will be invited to attend this function.

4. Required documents

The completed Application Form must be accompanied by:

4.1 A concise report that provides the following information:

*
Details demonstrating your leadership ability including one example of your Best Practice in leadership in your school; (500 words);
*
What you believe to be your strengths as a leader in your school. (up to 200 words).

4.2 A one-page outline showing your commitment to Catholic primary education, and evidence of how you have worked for the betterment of the educational community.

4.3 Evidence that you have been accepted into the conference/ activity/course including a budget estimate for the total cost of the proposed conference/activity/course including airfares, conference/ activity/course fees and accommodation. Your budget should also show funds acquired from all sources, either institutional or private.

4.4 Two references: one academic reference and one professional reference.

A senior academic staff member who is familiar with your most recent academic work and is able to comment on your academic achievements should provide the academic reference.
*
The professional reference should be from the Catholic school community (eg school principal, regional supervisor) including comments on your leadership qualities, any extra-curricular activities within the educational community as well as your personal qualities.
*
Contact details must be provided for referees, i.e. phone, email address and fax.

4.5 Statement of support from relevant agency indicating that the agency, should the application be successful, agrees to meet the recipient’s salary (including the relevant super contribution), as well as that of a relief teacher during the period of the scholarship winner’s absence.

The Elizabeth Ann McCall Scholarship was established in 2006 to celebrate the life of Elizabeth Ann McCall who was tragically killed in April 2006, aged 41. The Scholarship has been established in her honour by her husband Mark and sons Sam and Tom.

Elizabeth McCall (nee O'Connor) graduated with a Diploma of Teaching from McAuley College (a predecessor college of Australian Catholic University) in 1984. Both Elizabeth and Mark believed strongly in the importance of an understanding of social justice and this is reflected in the selection criteria for this scholarship.
Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in first year studies in the School of Education at Australian Catholic University, Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo)

Must be Australian Citizens or have Australian Residency status.

Value

$2,500 payable in first year of study

Selection Criteria
As this Scholarship has been established to encourage and reward involvement in social justice issues, applicants will be judged on the following:

* Academic merit (based on OP score or entry rank)
* A statement of 200 words or less outlining the applicant's involvement with, and commitment to, social justice issues.
* A referee report from the applicant's school Principal or other relevant person testifying to the applicant's involvement in social justice issues and activities. For example involvement with St Vincent de Paul or similar agency, and/or involvement in school-based activities having a social justice focus.
* Maintain satisfactory academic progress, according to the University's policy;
* Remain a full-time enrolled student at the institution unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevent the student from studying full-time, which have been endorsed by the University.

Established through a generous donation from the Sisters of Mercy, Brisbane Congregation, the Catherine McAuley Scholarship honours the founder of the Order.

Only one scholarship will be awarded each year and there will be a maximum of four scholarship holders at any time. The University reserves the right not to award the Scholarship or to vary the amount of the award.
Eligibility

Students entering the first year of their undergraduate course at ACU National Brisbane campus (excluding Bachelor of Theology)

Must be Australian citizens or have Australian Residency status.

Value

Up to $2,500 per annum for the length of the course (up to four years).

Preference will be given to commencing students, those who are socially and economically disadvantaged, indigenous students and those from rural and regional areas

The Australian Catholic University Brisbane Campus

The Gleeson Family Scholarship was established in 2006 by the Family of Mr John (Jack) Gleeson AM. Jack Gleeson's work in industry and telecommunications improved the lives of thousands of people, particularly those from isolated and rural areas. In 2005 he was awarded Australian Catholic University's (ACU National) highest honour, Doctor of the University, honoris causa, for his selfless and tireless commitment to the Church and society. This scholarship for study at ACU National was established to support undergraduate students who might not otherwise be able to access tertiary education.
Eligibility

Students entering the first year of their course in business, education, health, or social welfare related disciplines.

Must be Australian Citizens or those with Permanent Residency status.

Value

The scholarship will be valued at $4,000 per annum for the 3 or 4 years of an eligible undergraduate course and will be awarded subject to annual review of performance and personal circumstances. The benefit amount is to be subject to review and increase with CPI.

Selection Criteria
Preference will be given to students who are socially and economically disadvantaged and those from rural and regional Queensland particularly from the Catholic Diocese of Townsville.

* Australian Catholic University must be given as their QTAC first preference
* Academic merit (based on OP score or entry rank)
* A written statement (200 words or less) demonstrating commitment to the Catholic community
* Two referee reports from applicant's local parish priest and School Principal

On-going criteria – scholarship holders must

* Maintain satisfactory academic progress, according to the University's policy;
* Remain a full-time enrolled student at the institution unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevent the student from studying full-time, which have been endorsed by the University.

The Laurie Daniels Scholarship was established through the ACU National Foundation and commemorates the life of Laurie Daniels, a founding member of the University Senate, an active supporter of ACU National, and a life-long advocate of Catholic education. Since 2006 this scholarship has supported students in the new School of Nursing (NSW & ACT) at Canberra Campus.
Eligibility

Students entering the second year of the Bachelor of Nursing after having successfully completed the Enrolled Nurse Bridging Course at Canberra Institute of Technology.

Must be Australian citizens or have Australian Residency status.

Value

The successful applicant will be awarded $2,000 each year across the second and third years of the Bachelor of Nursing program at Canberra Campus. The continuation of the support in the third year is dependent upon successful completion of studies in the second year of the program.

* Credit Level or above in CIT Bridging Course
* Preference will be given to those in financial need. Applicants must provide a 200-word statement demonstrating financial need and use to which the scholarship may be applied.

The Australian Catholic University Foundation has established these scholarships through a grant from the George Alexander Foundation. George Alexander had a special interest in the areas of Education and Environment & Conservation. These scholarships reflect his interest in helping young people of outstanding academic ability, particularly those from rural and regional communities, to overcome financial disadvantage and achieve their tertiary education goals.
Eligibility

Students from rural or regional areas of Victoria who are entering the first year of their undergraduate course at Ballarat Campus

Must be an Australian citizen or have Australian Residency status

Value

Five scholarships of $10,000 each will be offered each year. Each scholarship will be paid in instalments over three years. An initial payment of $4,000 will be made in first year of study, then $3,000 for the following two years.

Selection Criteria

* Academic merit (based on ENTER score or entry rank). This is a key criterion.
* Evidence of desire to overcome social, economic or geographic disadvantage to their studies.
* Evidence of activities undertaken by applicants that show a measure of initiative and commitment in their academic, professional or personal life (for example, part-time employment, positions of leadership, community involvement or voluntary work).
* Evidence of how the scholarship would enable the applicant to overcome financial disadvantage and achieve academic success or a demonstrable career pathway and employment opportunities.
* At least one academic referee report which must address the selection criteria.

Ongoing criteria – scholarship holders must

* Maintain a Grade Point Average of 5 or more;
* Continue to meet eligibility requirements and provide documentary evidence to support ongoing eligibility when requested;
* Remain a full-time enrolled student at the Ballarat campus unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevent the student from studying full-time, which have been endorsed by the University.

Macquarie University will fund a living allowance for a maximum 3.5 years to E-IPRS PhD awardees under the MQRES scheme category 3.1.

These awards, which are limited in number and for which there is considerable competition, are available for tenure by graduates who wish to undertake postgraduate study and research in Australian institutions of higher education.

The Integration of the European Union

In 2008, the IUEU Centre will be offering two scholarships for PhD research projects focused on the European Union, the integration process in general, or related areas of research. Applicants may be based in Politics, International Relations, History, Law, Economics, Commerce, EU Languages and Cultural Studies, or another discipline appropriate to the particular proposal.

The IUEU Centre is based on a consortium of six universities, with La Trobe and Macquarie as the two principal nodes and Griffith, Newcastle, Flinders and Murdoch as partner universities. The first of this year's scholarships will be based at Macquarie University, but the Centre will facilitate co-supervision using appropriate expertise from another university in the six-member consortium. La Trobe and Macquarie are the two principal nodes of the IUEU Centre. Griffith, Newcastle, Flinders and Murdoch are partner universities.

MQRES scholarships are open to Australian or International applicants. Applicants should have completed an Australian Bachelor degree with high First Class Honours or demonstrate equivalent research qualifications and meet the University’ general admission requirements including English proficiency. The maximum tenure of award is 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory progress, and the scholarship offers a stipend in line with the current Australian Postgraduate Award currently $20,007 (2008) per annum tax exempt.

International Research Studentships in the Philosophy and Politics of Recognition

Expression of interests are sought for a potential collaborative opportunity between the Department of Philosophy, Macquarie University and the School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy, Queen’s University Belfast. Macquarie is administering one of two parallel studentships being offered (the other being administered through Queens) as key components of the on-going international research collaboration between political philosophers at Macquarie and Queen’s. The successful candidate for this award will enrol as a research student at Macquarie and will, under the terms of a co-tutelle agreement between the institutions, spend up to one year in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as a Queen's research student. Off-campus supervision will also be provided electronically.

The successful candidate will undertake research on the philosophy and politics of recognition under the supervision of Associate Professor Nicholas Smith at Macquarie and Professor Shane O’Neill at Queen’s. The research project should use recognition theory, as it has been developed in recent strands of philosophy and critical social theory, to explore some significant aspect of contemporary political life.

This scholarship is available to domestic or international students. Applicants should have equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours, such as a Masters degree with a substantial thesis component in a relevant discipline.

The scholarship pays a living allowance, currently $A20,007 per annum, tax exempt (2008), and the maximum tenure is 3 years full time (with a possible 1 year extension) subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the tenure of the scholarship.

Visual processing in a unique modular system

Two PhD research scholarships in the area of neurethology are available in the Centre for the Integrative Study of Animal Behaviour (CISAB) at Macquarie University. Applicants will participate in a new project funded by the Australian Research Council on the extraordinary visual sense of jumping spiders. This project will be conducted in collaboration with Dr Ximena Nelson and Assoc. Prof. Chris Evans at CISAB, Assoc. Prof. David O’Carroll (University of Adelaide) and Prof. Robert Jackson (University of Canterbury).

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in a relevant discipline. Candidates with experience working with invertebrates or neuroethology are particularly encouraged to apply.

Masked priming in the Bayesian Reader

A Macquarie University Research Excellence (MQRES) scholarship is available in Psychology for a PhD investigating “Masked priming in the Bayesian Reader” in association with an Australian Research Council-funded research project. The successful candidate will join a research team investigating the nature of non-conscious information processing using the masked priming procedure.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic or international students. Applicants should have equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours (such as a Masters degree with a substantial thesis component) in a relevant discipline (such as Cognitive Psychology). Candidates who have experience with RT methodology and visual word recognition are particularly encouraged to apply.

The scholarship pays a living allowance, currently $20,007 per annum, tax exempt (2008), and the tenure is a maximum 3.5 years full time, subject to satisfactory progress. A Macquarie University Research Excellence (MQRES) scholarship is available in the Macquarie University Centre for Cognitive Science (MACCS) for a PhD investigating “Attention, Intention and Automaticity” in association with an Australian Research Council-funded research project. The successful candidate will join a research team investigating the role of “higher-order” cognitive systems (namely spatial and temporal attention) in nonconscious information processing.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic or international students. Applicants should have equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours (such as a Masters degree with a substantial thesis component) in a relevant discipline (such as Cognitive Psychology, Mathematics or Physics). Candidates who have experience working with ERPs and/or kinematics are particularly encouraged to apply.

The scholarship pays a living allowance, currently $20,007 per annum, tax exempt (2008), and the tenure is a maximum 3.5 years full time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure. Additional support for projects and for national and international travel will be available from the Centre.

The project will combine behavioural and brain imaging techniques, and will include neuropsychological studies of patients at Macquarie University Private Hospital (under construction on campus).

A full time Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) is available to undertake a PhD in the Macquarie University Department of Computing. The PhD would be associated with a joint Macquarie University and National Australia Bank Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grant project "Defence against Phishing Attacks". The project investigates the methodologies used by organized criminals who execute phishing attacks against business and individuals who use Internet banking. These attacks cost US$928 million every year. The project will develop an automated, real-time monitoring defence against phishing (and associated credential trading) that will prevent customer loss and assist in gathering evidence that will assist in prosecution and dismantling of criminal networks.

It is expected that the students will be working on the following research topics:

* developing an investigative methodology for characterizing the modus operandi of phishers;
* investigating a technology to gather, store and distribute intelligence on phishing and the multi-lingual marketplace of credentials in real-time;
* using natural language processing methods to characterise and identify the texts used in phishing;
* creating a technology that provides counter-measures to botnet intrusion attacks.

MQRES scholarships are open to both domestic and International citizens. Applicants must demonstrate equivalent research qualifications or experience to an Australian First Class Honours degree in Computer Science or/and Mathematics, as well as evidence of their strong programming skills.

The MQRES stipend is currently A$20,007 p.a. tax exempt (2008), tenured for a maximum 3.5 years subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees and International award holders compulsory overseas health cover costs (where applicable) will also be sponsored for the scholarship tenure.

PhD Scholarship in Experimental Lab-on-a-chip Devices for Cell and Microbial Identification

A full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) is currently available in the Division of Information and Communication Sciences for a project in experimental lab-on-a-chip devices in the department of physics. The successful candidate will undertake PhD research on design and fabrication of novel microfluidic devices for microbiology.

The field of microfluidics concerns itself with a wide variety of interdisciplinary topics including fundamental questions in biology chemistry and physics. This project will involve the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices for concentrating and separating microbes, allowing for faster and earlier detection of dangerous organisms in fluids ranging from drinking water to blood. Fabrication will be done using an in-house semiconductor fabrication facility, and characterization will be done using state of the art facilities in the biology department. The skills gained in this PhD project will be valuable in the growing field of biotechnology.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed equivalent research qualifications to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in a relevant discipline (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Biology) , such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component. A full-time Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) is currently available in the Department of Electronics to undertake a project in collaboration with Agilent Technologies, Wiakato University, and international GaN foundries. Gallium Nitride transistors are emerging as a viable technology for radio communications. However, they exhibit anomalous characteristics that are not well modelled or account for in circuit design. This project aims to develop new design tools and communications circuits for future generation applications. This will involve exploration of the nonlinear behaviour of GaN transistors in collaboration with Agilent Technologies, CA.

MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed equivalent research qualifications in a relevant discipline to an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours , such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component.

Magnetic fields in protoplanetary discs

The development of mid-infrared and sub-mm wave astronomical instrumentation has reached the point where population studies of the discs of gas around stars are now possible, with a view to understanding the development of planetary systems around newly-formed stars. The role of magnetic fields in their formation, evolution and in the development of planets is relatively unexplored. This PhD project aims to develop an understanding of how the dynamical behaviour of discs is controlled by the magnetic field, and to link this to observations through its effects on microphysical processes such as ionization and chemistry.

Protein biomarker discovery in colorectal cancer research

A Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) for PhD research in clinical proteomics is available in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences (CBMS) at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. This project underpins an NHMRC grant investigating protein biomarkers in colorectal cancer for personalised medicine. The awardee will utilise the mass spectrometry infrastructure available at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (www.proteome.org.au) at Macquarie University.

Human blood plasma is an easily obtainable biofluid that contains many thousands of proteins/peptides that may be useful biomarkers for detecting diseases and monitoring disease progression. This project will use mass spectrometry to evaluate plasma collection procedures and establish a baseline of biomarker protein levels that occur naturally in the general population. The information will be applied to identify protein biomarkers in plasma from colorectal cancer patients that may be useful for early identification of patients at risk of treatment-related chemotoxicity and for determining patient prognosis. The successful applicant will receive comprehensive training in sample separation techniques and mass spectrometry for protein identification and quantitation.

Applicants should have completed an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours in a relevant discipline (Analytical chemistry, biochemistry, medicine) or demonstrate equivalent research qualifications from an overseas university, such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component. Hands-on experience in proteomics and/or biological mass spectrometry is highly desirable.

ELS MQRES Molecular Ecology of Cryptosporidium in Rural and Urban NSW

The incidence of cryptosporidiosis is rising in rural and urban NSW. Effective management and prevention of this disease requires knowledge, relevant to the Australian environment, of the contribution of Cryptosporidium species to human disease. A multi-disciplinary approach encompassing epidemiology, molecular biology and climatology will provide comprehensive knowledge of Cryptosporidium transmission cycles in humans in Australia. In partnership with NSW Health we will identify the risk factors associated with on-going transmission of cryptosporidiosis in regional areas, enabling NSW Health to develop effective management strategies for disease prevention in rural Australia. This project would particularly suit a candidate with a strong interest in microbiology, human health and diagnostics.

MQRES scholarships are available to Australian and international students. Applicants should have completed an Australian four-year undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with first class honours, or demonstrate equivalent research qualifications from an Australian or overseas University. Adaptation of marine cyanobacteria to coastal and ocean environments

A Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) for PhD research is available in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. This project is associated with an Australian Research Council grant on using genomic approaches to understand metal ion adaptation in marine cyanobacteria and a National Science Foundation (USA) grant on using metagenomic approaches to investigate cyanobacterial diversity. This project is part of a long-term collaboration with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California.

Unicellular marine cyanobacteria constitute 20-40% of total marine chlorophyll biomass and carbon fixation, and hence significantly impact the global carbon cycle and are very relevant to climate change issues. This project will use a variety of genomic approaches to investigate the mechanisms by which marine cyanobacteria have adapted to coastal and open ocean environments. Genome sequencing and metagenomic analysis of environmental samples will be used to identify novel genomic islands in strains adapted to different marine environmental niches. Microarray expression and molecular biology analyses will be used to determine the regulatory proteins, binding proteins, and transporters involved in the homeostasis of the important micronutrient metals Co, Cu, Zn, and Ni and to put these in the context of cyanobacterial evolutionary adaptation.

MQRES Scholarships are available to Australian and international students. Applicants should have completed either an Australian four-year undergraduate degree in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry or a related discipline with first class honours, or demonstrate equivalent research qualifications (such as a Masters course with substantial research component) from an Australian or overseas University. Experience in bioinformatics or genomics is highly desirable.

Sugar-protein interactions – the first line of defence against pathogens
A Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) for PhD research in Glycoproteomics is available in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences (CBMS) at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. This project addresses the hypothesis that the human innate immune system has evolved to use the infective attachment mechanism of the pathogen to its own advantage. By using the same protein-sugar interactions to bind the microbes to glycoproteins in various secreted human biological fluids, the viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens can be expelled from the body. In particular, the mechanism of this interaction in human milk and how it differs from that of cow’s milk will be compared in order to determine whether this protective effect of mother’s milk can be mimicked in breast milk substitutes. The successful applicant will utilise the infrastructure available at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (www.proteome.org.au) at Macquarie University and will receive comprehensive training in sample separation, protein and carbohydrate analysis and biological mass spectrometry.

MQRES Scholarships are available to Australian and international students.
