Maleny Botanical Gardens and Bird World

A world of beautiful views, gardens and birds included is an aviary tour ,oriental gardens, fairy gardens, rose gardens and plenty of little waterfalls. Awesome views across to the Glasshouse Mountains from all locations throughout the gardens. Take a seat and relax with so many water features located throughout the gardens. Golf buggies are available for further enjoyment and easy transportation around the gardens.

Sunrise Shelly Beach Queensland
Shelly Beach is snuggled in between Kings Beach and Moffat Beach. Its a lovely quiet spot and is the eastern most point of the Southern Sunshine Coast.

Egret with his Breakfast
This Great Egret is always out on the passage and I was able to catch him with his breakfast.

Galah at the Top of a Pine Tree
Galah's are the most prolific group of parrots in Australia and they usually hangout in noisy flocks. You often see them nestled amongst the Pine trees around the coast.

Royal Spoonbill and White Faced Heron
You always see the White Faced Heron feeding with a variety of birds. Today it was with this Royal Spoonbill in the shallows at low tide.

Australian Sword Grass Brown Butterfly

This butterfly is dark brown with a blue eyespot to the forewing and a red ringed eyespot to the hindwing. It is slow flying and breeds on large sword edges of grasses where its name comes from.

Eastern Blue Tongue Lizard

I discovered this guy in our backyard so thought i would grab a photo of him to share. Blue tongue lizards are a member of the skink family known as Tiliqua and come in a variety of sizes and colours with distinctive blue tongues. They are harmless but when the lizard is threatened it sticks out its large blue tongue and hisses loudly to scare off predators. They eat a variety of foods such as insects , worms, snails and slugs.

Soldier Crabs

They live on the east coast of Australia eat small particles of dead plants and animals. They scoop up sand and mud with their front claws. If you check out sandy flats,estuaries, and beaches at low tide you are likely to find an army on the march.

Basset Hound -- Bassets originated in France in the 1500's. Basset comes from the French word 'bas', meaning 'low'. From their physical appearance they appear to be a mix of three breeds, the Bloodhound, the colouring of a Foxhound and the legs of a Dachshund. They started to become popular in America after Elvis Presley sang to one on the Steve Allen Show in 1956 . Then as a shoe company sales manager sat with a friend for a dinner of catfish and deep fried corn fritters called “hush puppys" in a Tennessee restaurant.He was so Intrigued by the name, the shoe brand was born. The company then began using the Basset Hound as its logo when first introduced at the National Shoe Fair in Chicago in October 1957 and by mid 1959 the company had produced its first million pairs of the brand for men, women and children.

Breakfast with the Kingfishers

Two little Kingfishers sitting on a branch gave me a super photo opportunity and i could'nt believe one was having his meal. I also was taken by the length of their tail feather. Their colours seem to glow in the morning light.

The trawler with birds above and around the vessel i could make out many more Seagulls and Terns in the distance but the camera was'nt able to capture them.

This was the third member of the family on the right but as the other Kingfisher arrived with his meal he decided to take flight across the water and leave the couple in peace.

Looking across to the entrance of the Maroochydore River with the trawler anchored trying to haul in a possible feast of prawns to offer up at the Mooloolaba Wharf. Two friendly dogs take a dip in the blue waters.

Morning at Point Cartwright

This setting is a little later after sunrise around 8am as the sun creeps behind some fluffy white clouds leaving a reflecting light on the waters.I look back and snap some pictures of the lighthouse and the point.

Loved that i was able to capture the reflection of the Heron flying across the lake and thought it interesting how the wind was leaving its mark but just left enough stillness to leave a reflecting sky. Thanks Mariah!

I thought it was a nice look with the waves crawling over the rocks as the sun rises from the horizon for the new day. I'm afraid the white horses were a bit on the small side today.

Flying Kingfishers

The two of them took off to join their mate across the water after having digested their meal. One has his setting on descent while the other is still in flight mode.

Kayaking on Lake Currimundi

The silhouetting kayakers on Lake Currimundi and as you can see a slight breeze so not a perfect reflection on the lake.They are heading up stream where i came across first the White Heron then the White Faced Heron and then the Kingfishers. There were other birds on the way including Pee Wees, Honeyeaters, Minors,Wrens and little Finches.

Bird sightings along Golden Beach on the Fifth of June 2018. Last night i was laying in bed thinking of how many common birds are around the Caloundra area and came up with forty one. Yesterday i set out on a three hour walk along Golden Beach to just see how many photo opportunities and just how many i could capture in one morning. This is part one of that journey.
