The National Diabetes Research Strategy (2026–2035) presents a unified national vision to transform Australia’s response to diabetes through a comprehensive forward-looking research and innovation agenda. It is grounded in the urgent need to reduce the growing burden of diabetes on individuals, families, communities, healthcare systems and the national economy. With an alarming decline in diabetes research funding and our next generation research workforce at a critical tipping point, immediate action is vital, otherwise Australia risks forfeiting its global leadership in diabetes health innovation. Guided by the priorities of the Australian National Diabetes Strategy (2021-2030) and informed by the 2024 Parliamentary Inquiry into Diabetes, this strategy sets bold, long-term goals to address the complexity of diabetes in Australia.

This strategy has been developed by the Australian Diabetes Society, Australian Diabetes Educators Association, Breakthrough T1D, Australia and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, Diabetes Australia, Diabetes Victoria, Endocrine Society of Australia, Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society, Research Australia and Diabetes Feet Australia.

Please note that the document is currently in draft form. If you would like to provide feedback on the strategy, please send an email to the ADS CEO, A/Prof Sof Andrikopoulos, at: ceo@diabetessociety.com.au

The Australian Diabetes Society and Diabetes Feet Australia are committed to improving the foot health outcomes for people living with diabetes and in turn help reduce the large health burdens caused by diabetes-related foot disease on the nation, and we’re excited to launch the new Australian strategy for foot health and disease in diabetes 2030!

This strategy is a new plan to help people with diabetes take better care of their feet and prevent serious foot problems and targets how to improve the foot health of all people with diabetes in three main ways.

And to officially launch the Australian strategy for foot health and disease in diabetes 2030, we’ve developed an insightful webinar where we chat with some of the authors about why we need a new DFD strategy and discuss how and why the nine key national priority goals can help improve the foot health of people living with diabetes. So, head to the Diabetes Feet Australia website to learn all about the new national strategy and how we can work collaboratively to reduce the burden of diabetes-related foot disease, improve patient outcomes, and advocate for equitable access to care across Australia.

Based on new evidence from clinical studies and to make recommendations clearer, clinical practice recommendations for patients taking GLP-1 RA and dual GLP-1/GIP RAs prior to anaesthesia or sedation have been updated.

Representatives from the Australian Diabetes Society, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, Gastroenterological Society of Australia, National Association of Clinical Obesity Services, and Australian & New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society have developed the revised recommendations, which now include a decision-aid flowchart linked to explanatory statements.

They now also include a clear statement regarding the recommendation not to withhold these drugs prior to a procedure.

The revised document is available here.
In response to recent case reports of retained gastric contents and pulmonary aspiration during sedation for endoscopic procedures or general anaesthesia in people with diabetes and/or obesity treated with GLP-1 receptors agonists (GLP-1RAs), a clinical practice recommendation regarding the periprocedural use of GLP-1RAs/GIP Receptor Agonists (GIPRAs) has been co-authored by representatives from the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS), National Association of Clinical Obesity Services (NACOS), Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) and Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). The below represents a consensus based on review of currently available evidence and consensus expert opinion. Although the current level of evidence is weak to inform a guideline, this document was written to mitigate the risk of pulmonary aspiration with the periprocedural use of GLP-1RAs/GIPRAs which, although rare, is potentially fatal.
