Topic: Arup – a (very) spatial approach to executing a differentiation strategy

Arup’s Sydney Office recently launched a pilot project to try out new ways of working ahead of relocating to a new office in 2018. A quarter of the office has been refurbished as part of the experiment. The new space includes design studios, a workshop, a new activity based working “neighbourhood” and a 3D printer amongst other features. The spaces aim to foster creativity and collaboration, with Arup University symbolically and literally at the heart of the new approach. Kim will share the journey from strategy to execution, as well as exploring the value that Arup place on knowledge through Arup University.

Topic: Activity Based Working (ABW) Demystified

You may have heard of activity based working (ABW), a trend that has become popular in many Australian organisations? ABW is often musrepresented as a fancy name for open plan or as a way to introduce unpopular hot desking arrangements.

In fact the originators of ABW in the Netherlands, architects Veldhoen + Company, believe it is a platform for innovation. So what exactly is it? And how does it relate to Knowledge Management?
James Dellow will:

Provide an introduction to Activity Based Working (ABW)

Explain its relationship to Knowledge Management and related ideas such as the “Digital Workplace” and Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs)

Talk about his experience of being part of an integrated workplace strategy team

The challenges and opportunities for KM practice and practitioners in organisations that adopt ABW

**********************

Topic: The Social Enterprise – or not. What’s really going on out there?

The media is filled with article after article about a new breed of so-called Social Enterprises. Organisations that have adopted social media platforms, internally and externally, as a new mode of operation in order to be agile, responsive and ultimately more competitive in a business environment that seems to be speeding up by the day.

For the March monthly meeting we will be hearing first-hand from a practitioner who has worked with many such organisations in different parts of the world, organisations who have hitched their future to this new way of working.

Simon Scullion is a social strategist with US-based Jive* consultancy Social Edge Consulting. Based in Spain, his work takes him daily to organisations across Europe and other locations, working with them to reshape their future using social platforms, creating both employee and customer communities. Simon will give us his insights into whether the media buzz is actually being reflected out there in the real world, and what typical obstacles he has had to face.

He will also give us an insight into the way Social Edge Consulting run a global organisation of 30+ people using an ecosystem consisting primarily of a social platform and a culture of ‘working out loud’.

In a first for the NSW KM Forum, Simon will be joining us via a video link from his home base in Spain. For NSW KM’ers, you will need to be in the meeting room to hear and interact with Simon.

Look forward to seeing you there!

* Jive is one of a number of social enterprise products. The presentation will not be platform specific.

Topic: International Case Study: The Other Knowledge Management – Moving to a single collaboration platform

While the KM tools and practices continue to mature, the actual day-to-day experience of employees is that they still struggle to find the basic information they need to do their job. Estimates are still as high as 20%. In this talk, we will hear how a global investment bank’s employees use their enterprise social network to capture, find, and build on knowledge that people use every day, throughout the day.

Jacqui will also share with us lessons learned during their very interesting journey of moving from multiple collaboration tools throughout the organisation to a single collaboration platform.

*********************************************************
About the Speaker: Jacqui Chan
Jacqui Chan, Vice President at a global investment bank, is the APAC Lead of their Collaboration Centre, helping people change work behaviour to embrace a more collaborative culture. Jacqui has worked in Singapore and Australia where she is now based. Over the 23+ years that Jacqui has been with the bank, she has held various IT management roles and is the internal community manager in the APAC region.

actkm July meeting is at GovCamp

Innovation Month: GovCamp comes to Canberra

On Saturday 19 July around Australia, people from federal, state/territory and local government together with civic changemakers, digital innovators and policy designers are gathering for the first nationally-networked GovCamp to talk about innovation for public purpose.

This GovCamp is a pilot of the revitalised GovCamp Australia program and is aligned with this year’s Public Sector Innovation Month in July.

With a new coordinating team - together with organising teams around the country - GovCamp Australia is taking the popular format of open, participatory conversation to the next level as a genuinely national initiative to encourage ongoing and open discussion about public-purpose challenges and innovative responses.
Building on GovCamps from previous years, we're involved in the 'unconference’ style Innovation GovCamp - revitalising the GovCamp format with participatory sessions and 'social knowledge' sharing on a range of innovation themes: public sector, social, digital, open, collaborative... and more.

So far, events are being organised in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. GovCamp is free so join us for a reinvigorating day of discussion and interaction that will expose you to like-minded people... and the occasional surprise.
Register here for Innovation GovCamp in your city

Topic: “Innovation with Legs”

How to use Innovation for day to day success…..no matter what your role may be.

Rethinking how we operate day to day is a crucial step in maintaining our success at our respective organisations. Innovative thinking not only allows us to rethink our day to day operations but it also provides us with practical solutions to our knowledge management challenges and offers fresh improvements that can increase our impact and effectiveness.

Whilst many people may believe that innovation may not be applicable to their individual roles, the reality is innovation is becoming an essential business skill in hundreds of industries and professions around the world, including the world of knowledge management. In this keynote you’ll come away with some practical, replicable and effective innovation tools and processes that you can apply immediately to improve your outputs.

Anyone can become a world class innovator and this workshop will help to show you how.

*********************************************************

About the Speaker: Nils Vesk

Nils Vesk is a professional designer but you won’t find him designing your office or company website. Nils Vesk is a designer turned Innovation Architect. Nils is the lead Innovation Architect and founder of the consultancy – Innovation Blueprint. Nils is an entrepreneurial design thinker who loves nothing more than taking a great idea from conception to completion.

A self confessed innovation junkie, Nils spots innovation successes from around the globe, deconstructs them and then couples them with his latest innovation strategies to accelerate the growth of organisations and increase their success. He’s strategic but stops at number crunching, he’s mentored some of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs yet stopped at becoming a venture capitalist and his fast thinking is in higher demand than instant noodles.

For the last 18 years Nils has been applying design thinking to the business of generating and realising ideas. His clients include the worlds fastest growing companies who use Nils as an ‘Innovation Architect’ for accelerating business growth through innovation.

Nils’ innovation and thought leadership programs have seen him deliver programs for some of the most prestigious organisations in the world and Australia. Some of his clients have included Caltex, CBA, Microsoft, IBM, the Queensland Government, Nokia, Vic Roads, Bluescope Steel and Optus to name just a few.

Nils is the author of ‘Ideas with Legs: how to generate and realise ideas’ (2011), Life’s little toolbox: tips for a happier healthier you (2003) and co-author of ‘Ideas: original perspectives on life and business from leading thinkers’ (2006)

When not travelling the world delivering keynotes, workshops, researching or creating innovation plans for organisations, Nils is usually found in his hang-glider soaring in the air.

*********************************************************

ActKM June meeting - Innovation ACT & why the Nigerian bank scam succeeds

A busy session this evening with Vicki Lau, the Marketing Communications Administrator
from Innovation ANU telling us about the Innovation ACT activity this year and how you could get involved.

Why does the Nigerian banking scam continues to succeed? We take a brief foray into why this obvious scam is still raking in money and pulling the wool over people's eyes, and why an English economist advised terrorists in Britain how to avoid being detected by business analytics.

We will also get a briefing from David Williams following up on the formation of the Knowledge Management Global Network.

Tuesday, 17 June 2014 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM (AEST)
National Archives Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

A gold coin donation is welcome for nibbles.

You can register at our eventbrite site
KM IM CM RM: What’s in YOUR Toolkit?

ACTkm seminar, presented by Langtree IM
If you have ever built a house or managed a build project, you know the importance of planning and getting things right from the ground up. If the foundations aren’t solid, the whole thing can easily topple. And having the right trades at that right times so they work in together is pretty important too. Everyone working from the same plan and adding their specialist expertise using appropriate tools for the job means a better end result. It’s the same thing when it comes to managing information and records.

Using the Toolkit as the metaphor, this presentation looks at how we as KM IM CM and RM specialists can help our organisations best manage their corporate information and records. Event details: Tuesday 13 May 2014, 5.00pm-6.30pm, National Archives of Australia

To register, visit http://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/km-im-cm-rm-whats-in-your-toolkit-tickets-11491398081

Taxonomy Development and Knowledge Audit workshops with Patrick Lambe

ACTKM is proud to bring Patrick Lambe to Canberra to present 2 outstanding workshops. Numbers are capped at 20 to ensure optimal benefit to the particiapnts. Building taxonomies and conducting knowledge audits are two of the most important - and difficult - activities that a knowledge management (KM) team may be responsible for. From one of the most experienced KM consulting teams in the world, we bring two workshops to share step by step methodologies and a set of tools for both activities - based on over a decade of practice and solid research.

Taxonomy development workshop 17 - 18 October 2013
Knowledge audit workshop 21 - 22 October 2013
Location: The Brassey, Macquarie Street Barton, ACT 2600

Registrations

Using interactive techniques and practical exercises, you will learn how to plan and conduct taxonomy and knowledge audit initiatives. We use case examples to illustrate the methodologies taught, and you will have an opportunity - both during and after the workshops - to think about how to apply them to your own organisation.

Each workshop stands alone, but you can also take them together, at a discounted package price. For example, one of the most reliable ways to collect evidence for a corporate taxonomy is to conduct a knowledge audit.

Taxonomy development workshop 17 - 18 October 2013
Taxonomies are powerful instruments for breaking down siloes and fostering collaboration and learning - not just for information accessibility and navigation. This unique two day programme is focused on helping participants to develop and implement a taxonomy to support the knowledge management objectives and programmes in their organisation. It exposes participants to the range of different ways that taxonomies can be used to support organisation effectiveness, and imparts key design principles for a usable, maintainable and effective taxonomy. We teach an approach to taxonomy development that takes into account different stakeholder needs to ensure maximum adoption and it stresses the importance of a taxonomy as a living system with an active governance and evaluation process around it.

The workshop approach combines presentation of frameworks and proven methods with interactive exercises and opportunities to relate the content back to participants' own organisations. A secure online blog is available for up to three months after the workshop to share queries and follow up questions. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop and deploy taxonomies effectively in your organisation.

Knowledge audit workshop 21 - 22 October 2013
Performing a knowledge audit is probably the most important foundational piece of work you can do in Knowledge Management. It forms the basis for identifying what knowledge assets exist and where they are, identifies knowledge flows, knowledge gaps, and improvement opportunities to support the business. This one and a half day workshop is based on ten years of knowledge audit practice around the world, and gives a robust methodology and toolset to help knowledge and information management practitioners focus on practical interventions that will get buy-in and support across the organisation.

The workshop approach introduces the methodology through practical exercises with feedback and analysis, and is accompanied by a set of diagnostic tools. A secure online blog is available for up to three months after the workshop to share queries and follow up questions. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to conduct a knowledge audit in your organisation, and work with the results to design helpful interventions.

Network Numerology : Demystifying Numbers in Social Network Analysis

Information Awareness Month - actKM event - presentation by Graham Durant-Law of HyperEdge at the Canberra Museum and Art Gallery on the 15th of May 2012 - 4pm to 6 pm

“Numerology is the study of the purported divine, mystical or other special relationship between a count or measurement and life. The term is most often used in a derogatory sense. Network science is replete with numbers, algorithms and formulas. Often, to the uninitiated, these numbers are akin to numerology and represent a “black art” understood only by a few. In this presentation some of the more common measures used in Social Network Analysis will be demystified. However some numerological numbers will also be discussed. These include Dunbar’s Number and the lesser know Wellman’s Number, along with the Bernard-Kilworth Number and Wu’s Heuristic. It will be up to you to decide whether these numbers are real or a divine measure!”

Connected - the film

Have you ever faked a bathroom trip to check your email? Slept with your laptop? Or become so overwhelmed that you just unplugged from it all? In this funny, eye-opening, and inspiring film, director Tiffany Shlain takes audiences on an exhilarating rollercoaster ride to discover what it means to be connected in the 21st century. From founding The Webby Awards to being a passionate advocate for The National Day of Unplugging, Shlain’s love/hate relationship with technology serves as the springboard for a thrilling exploration of modern life…and our interconnected future. Equal parts documentary and memoir, the film unfolds during a year in which technology and science literally become a matter of life and death for the director. As Shlain’s father battles brain cancer and she confronts a high-risk pregnancy, her very understanding of connection is challenged. Using a brilliant mix of animation, archival footage, and home movies, Shlain reveals the surprising ties that link us not only to the people we love but also to the world at large. A personal film with universal relevance, Connected explores how, after centuries of declaring our independence, it may be time for us to declare our interdependence instead.

The event will be held in the National Library of Australia Theatrette on the 9th of February from 1 - 2.30 pm. Entry is by gold coin donation to cover the costs of the AudioVisual. The Theatrette has been kindly provided by the National Library of Australia.

This film was recently shown at the State Library of Victoria and is being provided by Michelle Lambert of the KM Roundtable.

We will be starting right on 1 pm so it is recommended you arrive at 12.45 pm at the latest to get your seats.

Using social network analysis for organisation and personal improvement

By guest blogger Sarah Jansen

A Defence man from way back, Graham Durant-Law now works at Hyperedge and talked about the idea that each organisation is made up of a formal organisation and an informal organisation. He says that the formal organisation has its place but 90% of the work gets done inside the informal organisation.

Theory

Although Graham has worked in knowledge management since 2001 and built KM systems for Defence, he has some issues with the term and the industry. His main criticism is that KM professionals don’t know what exactly they’re talking about; it’s all a bit trial and error because we haven’t played with KM theory enough. His view is that more discussion of KM theory would get the industry to a shared understanding and common meaning.

Graham believes that KM has some vocabulary issues. He went through some network science terms that he believes KM would benefit from sticking to and gave us some examples, some of which are listed below and the rest are on the actKM11 Slideshare.

Structural terms

•	A node is the smallest unit in the network. Also known as a vertex or entity. They can be people, teams, whole organisations.
•	A tie is a line between two nodes indicated a relationship also called an edge or link.
•	A graph is a set of nodes and ties.
•	A network consists of graph and additional info about nodes/ties. Also known as map.

Typical measurements of interconnectivity

•	Density is the number of possible connections between nodes.
•	Distance is the degrees of separation or the diameter of a network.
•	Reciprocity is the number of bi-directional links expressed as a percentage.
•	Centrality is the extent to which a network is organised around one or more central nodes

Organisational dynamics

Graham emphasised that there are many different roles that people fulfil in flowing information through an organisation. Some of these roles he terms brokers, providers, gatekeepers, seekers.

He emphasised the importance of quality over size of the network, and the extreme value of having a person who is a super connector. If you are lucky enough to have a super connector, one of the best things you can do is leverage them to help get the right information to the right people.

By juxtaposing a traditional organisational chart (which executives love) with a chart showing the structure of communication connections within an organisation, Graham demonstrated how these super connectors are unofficially at the centre of an organisation’s communication network. Therefore, it is hugely important to make them official as well by putting them on your knowledge and/or change management team.
