SUMMARY: A new edition of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs’ (now DIAC) annual publication Population Flows: Immigration Aspects shows the Australian Government’s 2005-06 Migration Programme had the highest skill stream intake on record. DIMA migration branch assistant secretary Greg Mills said today immigration had helped Australia expand its economy and raise living standards for all. ‘Last year, employer sponsored and state/territory government sponsored migration increased by 17 and 47 per cent respectively over 2004-05.’.

Record skilled migration expands Australian economy

A new edition of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs’ annual publication Population Flows: Immigration Aspects shows the Australian Government’s 2005-06 Migration Programme had the highest skill stream intake on record.

The 2007 edition of the book released today also shows that the nation’s migration programme last financial year included an increase of almost 9 per cent in the family stream.

Population Flows: Immigration Aspects includes chapters on:

* population growth and international movement
* Australia’s migration and humanitarian programmes
* state-specific and regional migration
* New Zealand movement
* temporary entry
* the economics of immigration
* citizenship settlement and cultural diversity
* migration flows to the states.

DIMA migration branch assistant secretary Greg Mills said today immigration had helped Australia expand its economy and raise living standards for all.

‘In 2005-06, the Migration Programme received 142 930 places, with more than 97 000 places in the skill stream,’ Mr Mills said.

‘The Government also increased the family stream places to 45 290 for 2005-06, an increase of 8.5 per cent over the previous year.’

Mr Mills said improving and fine-tuning immigration policy was an ongoing process.

‘Changes to the programme are designed to serve Australia’s interests and help meet the needs of states, regions and industry,’ he said.

‘Last year, employer sponsored and state/territory government sponsored migration increased by 17 and 47 per cent respectively over 2004-05.’

First-home buyers flee capital cities

FIRST-TIME home buyers are moving to regional areas as housing in capital cities becomes more expensive, a new industry report says.

Population growth in regional areas outstripped, or equalled, capital-city growth in Australia's three largest states in 2005 and 2006, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) said today.

"Record low housing affordability in many state capitals has forced an increasing number of first-time home buyers to relocate into non-metropolitan areas, which in many cases has caused these people to give up their current jobs in the hope of finding a home to start a family," the association's director of housing and economics, Simon Tennent, said.

Trades Recognition Australia
Most applicants find the task of assembling documents for assessment by Trades Recognition Australia to be daunting and frustrating. TRA need detailed technical information which must focus on how you acquired your skills and how you have subsequently applied them in the work place. The assessment pathway will be determined in relation to formal training undertaken with an employer (including vocational training) or alternatively your ability to evidence relevant work experience in your nominated occupation. Many applicants fail to document their case clearly and often training and work statements are too vague and do not address all the requirements outlined by TRA which is why the refusal rate is so high.

Below are the main reasons why cases are refused by TRA:

There was not enough detail in the evidence you provided
You do not have enough training and work experience
Your training and work experience is not equal to any Australian occupation assessed by TRA
The training and work experience claimed in your application was not able to be verified

For skilled migration hopefuls this is the most critical stage of application process.

This category is for applicants who are under 45 years of age with recognised skills and Recent Work Experience and who can be sponsored by a non-dependent child, parent, brother or sister, neice or nephew, aunt or uncle. To be granted a visa applicants must score 110 points.

Skilled Designated Area (Provisional)

Skilled State Territory Nominated Independent

These categories are for skilled applicants who are unable to meet the criteria for a permanent visa and who can be sponsored by a non-dependent child, parent, brother or sister, neice or nephew, aunt or uncle, first cousin or a grandparent. There is no points test for this cateogry.

This category is for applicants who are able to meet the basic requirements under the Skilled Independent category but not the passmark and requires sponsorship from a participating State or Territory who will assess your commitment to reside in the State or Territory and whether your skills are in demand.

Skilled Independent Regional

Skill Matching

This provisional category is for skilled people who are unable to meet the passmark for a permanent visa and who wish to live and work in a regional or low growth metropolitan area in Australia. You must be sponsored by a participating State or Territory government.

This category is not points tested and has been designed to overcome skill shortages by placing an applicant's details on a Skill Matching Database for 2 years. The database is made available to the State and Territory governments and employers who may then nominate an applicant for migration.

Migration Occupations Demand List
Australia is currently experiencing a significant demand for professional and tradepersons.
The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Senator Amanda Vanstone has recently revised the Migration Occupations Demand List (MODL) which now includes the occupations listed below.

These occupations all attract 60 points for skill and are in demand throughout Australia
Therefore, if you are able to evidence employment in your nominated occupation for 3 out of the 4 years before applying (Specific Work Experience) for a visa and you speak fluent English, you will automatically reach the passmark of 120 points under the Skilled Independent category.
This means that you can apply for permanent residence and reside anywhere in Australia.
Points are awarded for Skill (60), age (30-15), English (20), SWE (10) and MODL (15-20)
Both Trades Recognition Australia and the Adelaide Skilled Processing Centre afford priority processing to occupations featured on the MODL.
