I haven’t gotten to use iBooks Author yet (due to computer limitations), so I can’t review the functionality. Although I am in the works of helping put together a book on how to yo-yo. I’ll update with my opinion when i’m done.

For now, I thought I would review a little about what iBooks Author is and who should use it.

Reviewing The Good

It’s Free

Probably the best thing about iBooks Author is that it’s free! It’s a compact all-in-one tool that allows for easy publishing to the iPad through Apple’s iBook store, and it’s free!

You can’t beat free. That alone makes it worth trying out (which I will soon do).

Supports Multimedia

Something that sets iBooks Author apart from other e-publishing tools is that it was designed with multimedia and interactivity in mind. That means it is the first e-publishing tool available to make it easy to create and publish interactive storybooks and textbooks.

You can see a short video and learn more about this on Apple’s website.

Built In Templates

If you’ve been a Mac user for any period of time, and have used other Apple software (such as Keynote), you shouldn’t be suprised to learn that iBooks Author comes with a number of built templates to streamline the publishing process and quickly add a professional edge to your books layouts.

Reviewing The Bad

Limited to the iPad

This is probably the biggest complaint so far. Although it’s true you can use iBooks Author to publish e-books for multiple platforms, those books have to be FREE.

If you’re looking to charge for your books, however, then you are limited to selling on the iPad only. Although this may not be such a big deal considering the iPad is one of few devices that support multimedia e-books.

Requires a Mac

Another down sound to Apple’s new book publishing app is that you have to own a Mac. In addition, your Mac needs to be running the latest version of the opertaing system, OSX Lion.

This leaves out all Windows users and any Mac users who, like me, haven’t upgrade to Lion quite yet.

Is iBooks Author Worth It

I hope this review has made you think the iBooks Author app isn’t worth it. It’s got some ups and downs, but over time I am sure the cons will decrease.

I also image that the publishing industry will grab a hold of this powerful tool the more the iPad becomes a standard for students viewing textbooks.

If you would like to read more about how to use iBooks Author, check out this review on Macworld.

You may come across a time when you need to add a fraction to your website or blog post. You could very easily add a / between your numbers, 1/4, or you could use some simple HTML code to make it look more real, 1⁄4.

Adding fractions isn’t all that hard. You just have to remember one HTML entity:

⁄

To use the ⁄ entity you need to edit your text in HTML. To do this simply open up the HTML file or, if you are on a blogging platform such as WordPress, switch the blog editor to the source editor instead of the visual editor. Here is a WordPress screenshot:

Now just add the fraction HTML entity between your two numbers like so:

1 ⁄ 4

If you want, you can make use of a couple more HTML tags to get an even more realistic fraction: 3⁄8

To get your fraction to look this you need to make use of the and tags noted in the Creating Footnotes article. The code looks like this:

3 ⁄ 8

Creating footnotes on your blog or website is very easy. You can do this by utilizing two HTML tags to create sub-text or super-text.

Sub-text is text that is below the normal line of text. For example, this is sub-text.

Super-text is text that is above the normal line of text. For example, this is super-text.

What does this have to do with footnotes?

You can easily utilize sub-text and super-text to create nice looking footnotes1. To do this, open the HTML editor of your blog or website. One WordPress, you can toggle between a visual editor (the default) and an HTML editor using the toggle pane next to the “Publish” section.

One you have the HTML editor open, simply wrap the text you want in the proper sub-text or super-text tag.

For sub-text, wrap your text in the following tag: Your Text Here

For super-text, wrap your text in the following tag: Your Text Here

It’s as easy as that!A

1. Footnotes only look nice if you take time to make them that way.
A Some people would also say, easy as pie!

Let’s get this out there right form the start, no it’s not an iPad replacement…..nothing is. Apple has, both now and for the foreseeable future, taken the market when it comes to tablet devices.

What it is

The new Amazon Kindle Fire is not a step up from the old kindle. It’s really a different device altogether. You’ll find that Amazon now has an entire “Kindle Family”, featuring a Kindle, Kindle with keypad, a Kinle Touch, and (of course) the Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire is really a new Kindle device that fits in the tablet market more than the e-reader market. It still features a lot of the great e-reading capabilities people fell in love with, but now it also features web browsing, games, Facebook, and more.

Pros

The Kindle Fire has a number of pros. The big ones:

Never needs to be connected to a copmuter

8 Hour battery life

Low price point

Runs on Android

Cons

There are, however, a number of cons for the Amazon Kindle Fire:

The device is heavy, weighing in at 14.6 ounces

Only comes with 8GB of storage space

A little on the bulky side

Battery life is a lot shorter than the standard Kindle
