A few weeks ago, my friend Walter Elly approached me about a Star Wars projects called Star Wars Uncut. Here's how it works: Star Wars - A New Hope, was cut up into 1500-ish 14 second chunks. Fans claim the chunks, remake them, and upload. When all the chunks are finished we'll have a full length Star Wars movie, remade 100% by fans.

So this is our contribution. Created by grabbing key frames and edited in Photoshop (note Luke's fancy footwork near the end, and the guard's reaction). Music dramatically provided by Walter and me. I should also note that while we had intended to do something much more elaborate, we had to create this whilst watching our FIVE kids, all 5 and under. Egad. But, it was good fun! Enjoy.

PULSE Mass Market Edition Cover Unveiled

Huzzah! The cover for the mass market edition of PULSE has just been sent to me and it is beautiful. AND its an improvement on the hard cover edition as well. Below are two images of the cover (click on them to see a larger size).

Here's a high resolution copy of the front cover. You'll see that a cool tagline has been added to the top: SOME LEGENDS NEVER DIE...WITHOUT A FIGHT. The full Hydra image is now visible. AND the two soldiers have been removed, which is a good thing.

And here is the full cover, which I scanned in, hence the different coloring. What was wonderful about the printed cover is that 1. The paper is matter (which you can kind of see in the scan) but the text and Hydra are spot glossed and embossed, so they really pop out and look cool. The text and Hydra image on the spine are also spot glossed. Back cover looks great too, but that more thanks to those awesome blurbs from Sigler, Berry and Booklist!

Ninjas! Zombies! Flarg!!

If you should find yourself alone on a leaf littered street, alone, late at night, that sound you hear-like a dry whisper-might not be the wind carrying a leaf across the pavement. It might be zombies! Or ninjas! It all depends on which of the following websites you're checking out AND which of the future books you snag.

This was a very trying year for me and essentially wiped out my sense of humor. As part of my quest to find that sense of humor again, I have dived headlong into two humor projects (both under pen names) and have completed two books that are both disgustingly funny. The first book, THE NINJA'S PATH is an inspirational gift book for ninjas. The second, THE ZOMBIE'S WAY is an inspirational gift book for zombies. To celebrate their completion I have launched two websites. In the future, both sites will feature the published books as well, but right now they're simply full-up with funny zombie and ninja related media.

Today I’m going to talk about being involved in forums as a writer. When you’re an author, you want to be able to make a connection directly with your reader and get them engaged in your work before they read a page of your work.

I think the best way to go about this is to go onto a forum and begin topics about books and write thorough, in-depth posts that people want to read. The key is to make the posts inviting and well-written.

If you introduce a forum community to your book with an unedited post full of extra exclamation and quotation marks and make it look like a giant text message, then people will think, “If he can’t write a good 100-word post, how can I trust him to have a good 30,000-100,000-word book?” You will lose your audience and by default lose sales.

Here are the main things to remember when looking for a forum to talk up your book:

Join a group that talks about your genre. If your book is a romance and you join a fantasy forum, people there won’t buy your book. They’ll tell you that it doesn’t belong there, so if your book is romance, don’t go to book forums of genres other than romance.

Be confident about your book’s quality. If you talk like you’re unsure about your book, people will be wary. Be confident, but not too full of yourself.

Don’t spam. Please. No one likes spam. Don’t make your only posts be posts about your book. Be ACTIVELY INVOLVED in the forum.

Play by their rules. Not all forums have the same unwritten rules, so understand this and play by the rules of the forum. Don’t waste your time writing in a different way that will throw people off.

If you do this successfully, you want to get active in a few discussions before making any posts about your book. Once you have friends on the forum, your book will probably pique their interest.

So what is CLAWS?

CLAWS is a thriller that centers on a wildlife biologist named Angie Rippard who is drawn into a police investigation when two of her students at the University of Arizona are found dead on a golf course early one morning. Rippard suspects the teens were killed by a large mountain lion.

If you’re a fan of Michael Crichton, Steve Alten, Scott Sigler, or Lincoln Child, you’ll find a lot to like in CLAWS. I love those writers, and my book was born out of a love for the kinds of thrillers these great writers create.

I am currently kicking off a 45-day blog tour to promote CLAWS, and have been absolutely astonished by the good will of bestselling writers who have given me a spot to guest blog about my little-engine-that-could novel.

So the topic of today’s guest blog: What are your favorite novels?

What are the books that you return to time and time again over the years? And why?

For me, I have probably read Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park and Sphere more than any other novels. My copy of Jurassic Park is absolutely falling apart because of how many times I’ve read it. What Crichton seemed to do in that book better than anywhere else in the first part of his career was to wed science, plot, and character together into a compelling brew.

By bringing kids into the center of his story, he created a tenderness and vulnerability that was absent from many of his earlier novels. And let’s face it; it’s a hell of a concept. Maybe the most plausible (and timely) concept of any of his novels up to that point in his career.
