Kingdoms of Desire: Erotic Tales of Fantasy is a place where lust and legend abound, and adventure, passion and danger entwine. Think mystical lands and creatures, kings and queens, knights and renegades, heroes and villains, warlords, maidens and princesses. Think battles and danger, honor and dishonor, good and evil. Most of all think hearts filled with passion and secret desire.

The anthology is looking for short stories between 3,000 to 6,000 words.

Szereto wants well-developed story lines and well-crafted prose told in a unique voice and containing interesting characters and settings. Think atmosphere, passion, desire… imaginative steamy tales that transport the reader to fantastical realms. Stories from female and male writers are welcome, as are stories containing characters of any sexual orientation.
New York City, June 29, 2011—PEN American Center, the largest branch of the world’s oldest literary and human rights organization, today announced changes to its by-laws that will open the ranks of its membership. Comprised of more than 3,400 writers, translators, editors, and other literary professionals across the country, PEN is a membership organization devoted to defending free expression and advancing literature throughout the world.

Prior to a unanimous vote by PEN’s board of trustees on June 15, most authors were required to have published two books to join PEN. PEN’s by-laws have now been amended to allow writers to apply for membership after the publication of their first book. Playwrights and screenwriters may join after producing one work in a professional setting. Others in the literary community who have achieved recognition in the field—e.g., publishers, editors, literary agents, scouts, and publicists—may also apply to become members of PEN.

In a letter to PEN members and associate members announcing the amendments, PEN American Center President Kwame Anthony Appiah and Membership Committee Chair John Oakes wrote, “PEN’s membership is the heart of the organization, defining its character and purpose. And so we are pleased to report that PEN’s board of trustees has voted unanimously to amend PEN’s by-laws with respect to its membership guidelines, and to have done so in a way that honors our history and essential spirit while opening our ranks to the fullest part of the literary community.” Appiah and Oakes added, “We’re particularly gratified that the changes to our by-laws will allow us to welcome a younger generation of PEN members, ensuring our ongoing relevance and vitality.”

The decision to amend PEN’s membership criteria was reached after full discussion. PEN’s membership committee unanimously proposed a recommendation to its trusteeship, by-laws, and executive committees, all of which contributed edits and approved the final proposal brought before and ratified by PEN’s board.

Article II will be replaced by the following language: “PEN American Center is an advocacy organization of literary professionals working to defend freedom of expression and to advance the cause of literature worldwide.” Article III as passed reads: “PEN welcomes to its membership all literary writers and those belonging to the larger literary community. Writers should have one book published; playwrights and screenwriters: one work produced in a professional setting; others should have achieved recognition in the literary field. Nominations are not necessary. While admission is at the discretion of the Membership Committee, PEN aims for inclusion, recognizing that a growing and vibrant membership strengthens and informs all of its efforts on behalf of writers and their readers.”

Anyone wishing to apply to PEN may download an application at www.pen.org/join. Completed applications should be sent to membership@pen.org. Annual membership dues are $100. PEN also welcomes associate members, a tier of membership open to all those who support PEN’s mission regardless of professional affiliation. Associate membership remains unchanged in all ways. Annual associate membership dues are $40, or $20 for students. Inquiries about PEN membership or associate membership may be directed to Alena Graedon, Manager of Membership and Literary Awards.

New York, NY – April 5, 2011 – Publishers Weekly has forged an agreement with the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) to offer IBPA members new benefits. The “PW Select Program” for IBPA members costs $99 and applies to new and existing IBPA memberships. The program includes a complimentary six-month subscription to Publishers Weekly digital edition, a free listing in PW Select and inclusion in Publishers Weekly’s influential Spring Announcements issue. Plus, Publishers Weekly’s editorial staff selects 25 titles to be independently reviewed for PW Select; all reviews, positive or negative, are published in the quarterly supplement.

According to Publishers Weekly publisher Cevin Bryerman, “Working in conjunction with the IBPA is a natural. Independent publishers profit from the news and information Publishers Weekly puts out each week and on a daily basis through its e-newsletters. PW Select is the new quarterly supplement that focuses on self-publishing and showcases selected self-published books and authors. Publishers Weekly gains an important audience in IBPA members.”

Florrie Binford Kichler, president of the IBPA, says, “IBPA is very pleased to offer its members these new benefits from Publishers Weekly and PW Select. Small and independent publishers can move fast. Having informative, timely resources such as the ‘PW Select Program’ at hand can help independent publishers spot trends, act and react fast.” She adds, “With the explosion in self-publishing, self-published authors are finding that marketing is all the more important to their success. The IBPA helps anyone who wants to get their work out there.”

The IBPA was founded in 1983 as the Publishers Marketing Association. In 2008 the nonprofit trade organization changed its name to the Independent Book Publishing Association, continuing to serve its 3,000 members through education and advocacy within the publishing industry and through its popular cooperative marketing programs.

Publishers Weekly is the international newsmagazine of the book publishing industry. Founded in 1872 and published continuously since then, the weekly trade magazine publishes five newsletters, including PW Daily, four blogs and a robust Web site, mobile edition and app. Publishers Weekly reviews more than 8,000 books each year, in addition to featuring author interviews and news about bookselling, marketing, merchandising and the publishing trade, along with regular columns on rights, people in publishing and bestsellers.

PW Select focuses on self-publishing and includes reviews of self-published books, author interviews, feature articles about self-publishing and a paid announcements listing of recently self-published titles. Titles selected for review are chosen independently by Publishers Weekly’s editorial staff, as are self-published authors selected to be interviewed. The next deadline for inclusion in PW Select is April 30, 2011.
Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity, a leading national non-profit journalism organization, released the following statement regarding the news the U.S. House of Representatives voted today to deny funding to NPR.

“The government has no place in the journalism industry and that includes funding news organizations. Currently, there are hundreds of non-profit organizations practicing journalism that thrive without taxpayer funding. The mere existence of these organizations demonstrates that NPR can survive without government influence.

In addition, rapid developments in technology have allowed television and broadcast stations to emerge all over the nation, taking the place of the original purpose of NPR. Additional government support of the media is not warranted and could have negative impacts on journalism as a whole.”
(March 9, 2011) — The Oxford American includes a tribute to the acclaimed Mississippi writer Barry Hannah in its new issue, which is available now at bookstores and newsstands nationwide.

"Some of us who revere the writing of Barry Hannah had the good fortune to know, or at least encounter, him before he died on March 1, 2010," said Marc Smirnoff, editor of The Oxford American. "Surreally, Barry could be just as fiercely eloquent and meaningful in person as he could be on the warpaths of his prose."

The section about Hannah includes an essay by novelist John Hodges on his friendship and admiration for Hannah, as well as a chorus of anecdotes about "Barry in the World," exploring the legacy of the "good Barry" and the "bad Barry" in the words of such writers as Donna Tartt, Jack Pendarvis, Rick Bass, and Humphreys McGee. "Barry drove to the woman's house on his Harley-Davidson," begins McGee, in one of many memorable reminiscences, "a pistol secreted in his jacket pocket...."

Other highlights in the new issue include:

• Editor Marc Smirnoff goes nuts over the new True Grit—and recalls the time Barry Hannah gave him the finger.

• Eudora Welty applies for a job at The New Yorker.

• Jack Pendarvis puts his sausage fingers all over the set of HBO's Treme.

• Joshua Clark makes an epic journey through Faulkner family history.

• A hunt to find the jive-talkin' cross-dresser at the heart of the Southern hip-hop wars.

• The rise of black Republicans in the age of Obama—a mother and daughter story.

• A new, high-octane book section with reviews on Big Mike Huckabee, censored Huckleberry Finn, Mencken's self-loathing, and war in Arkansas.

Select articles from the new issue are available free in their entirety at www.oxfordamerican.org, where The OA also will post exclusive web content to complement the print edition.
