Actually Tono city in Japan where I was in November was much colder.
Since last weekend, it started to get colder and it snowed from time to time. Finally it seems that finally winter arrived. Of course, in the western part of Austria it snowed a lot and due to the high temperature avalanche alarm was put out.

However, all has gone yesterday again. It was warm and rained...

Some months ago, I was asked if I cook natto by myself and I told them yes. I once brought my natto. It was a month ago, just before I left for Japan in November I heard at the restaurant that somebody wants to learn how to do it. I made an appointment today at the restaurant.

There appeared an Austrian guy and his girlfriend. He told me that he tried many times by himself and he happened to eat my natto at the restaurant the other day, he knew quickly that it was not bought but made. It is a quite interesting story. I tried his natto, it surely was but not really sticky at all and shaking the bin each bean moves seperately. My first thought was that there was something wrong with fermentation.

We were to cook at the restaurant but one of their fireplace was broken, we went to his place near the restaurant. He took me to a building of Vienna university of Technology which is actually very close to my apartment, and to his lab. He was the managing director of GrAT, Appropriate Technology Center within Vienna university of Technology. I started to cook as I usually do.

While we were steaming soy beans in pressure cooker, we talked about what we are doing. He has a close connection with Nagoya Institute of Technology and works for planning and designing houses in Tohoku area so that they can be independent of nuclear power plant in coorporation with Sekisui Heim. He has some exchange students from Japan and is going to visit Japan for a conference. It was a surprising coinsidence. I started to talk about what I did in Iwate and showed my blog.

He had a very nice heater, he told me that it can hold the temperature around 40 degrees, and that he once really measured. This heater can hold seven or eight small plastic cups inside. This time we just use kitchen paper to cover the top with rubber band instead of closing it by cap equiped with the heater. Then we made holes with tooth picker. And make the plastic cover slightly open to secure a little air flow, then told him that it might be better to cover the heater with a towel or something. He told me that there were only some points different from how he did. What will happen then?? To be continued.

He wrote me a message the next day that it worked out fine.

Usually we would think of Grinzing where there are lots of Heurige (wine restaurant) in 19 district of Vienna, this small town seems to be much bigger than that. It seems that not many tourists would visit here, wine out of this region would be consumed around this area.

From the train station we walked along vine yards toward Baden. The view from Grinzing over Vienna city is wonderful, but the scenery here was also excellent. Grapes have been already cropped, there were still some left.

We wanted to try Sturm, a typical drink of this season which is a sort of wine before starting fermentation, but unfortunately it has already gone at two locations.

Having been so busy for a long time, first post after almost three months. This 10 days event was wonderful, I went there twice on weekend. They had four different tents. 1L beer costs 7.7 Euro, was absolutely ok price. There was no huge selection of beer but I am sure to go there next year again.

I just happened to sit in front of three people from Vienna that are to travel to Japan next year, we started to talk about it on and on.

Seems that they want to add "daughters" to this、not only "sons"....

Land of mountains, land on the river,
Land of fields, land of cathedrals,
Land of hammers, with a good future.
Homeland are you of great sons,
Nation graced with beauty,
much praised Austria,
much praised Austria!

Strongly fought for, fiercely contested,
You lie at the continent's center
like a strong heart.
You have borne since ancient times
The burden of a high mission,
much tested Austria,
much tested Austria!

With courage into a new age,
free and believing watch us stride,
happily working and full of hope.
In fraternal chorus let us swear in unity
fatherland, our allegiance to you,
much beloved Austria,

When I was eating at a Chinese restaurant near my apartment, I heard strange sound from outside. There is a Greek embassy at the end of the street where I am living, people got together and started demonstration. I first thought that it might be claim for paying lots of money for Greece, but this was something else.

Greek government promotes to poison street dogs and the demonstration was for that. Greece is one of the favorite vacation place for Austrian people and it seems that many people saw dogs hang or killed there.

Al di Meola. I asked one of my friends to go with me. First she hesitated to pay much for an unknown musician, but she seemed to enjoy really very much.

We were at the secpmd row of the back part of the first floor, it was very good. His play was amazing. I kept goose pimples throughout the concert.
I was not able to join the recent "French evening"-meetings to see the movies or talk in French, this time she organized ticket three months ago and I kept the date free. The last event I joined was the "Russian evening" when we went to see the play in Russian, whose title also has "dream" in it.

The author of this play is Jon Fosse and was created by Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, a French actress and the sisiter of Carla Bruni, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi starred. The main theme of this is lives (love) and deaths, a somehow heavy one. The play was all in French but German subtitles were shown on the wall of the theater set in the Museum Quarter.

It was not as the last Russian play; we had a hard time to try to follow the story. The actresses and actors spoke very clearly and it was not very hard to understand what they were speaking. I thought they played very well.

And it came out to be like this later. It was very tasty udon.
Until the end of August almost all Sundays are booked for the games. In our team there are some people working on Saturdays, we have to ask federation to plan our game on Sundays.

Today's team was the champion team from last year. We had to stop playing due to strong rain and wind during the first game, we started again after 30 minutes break. It was a very good game but unfortunately we lost the first game by one point.

When the second game started sun started to shine and got warmer. This game was also very good, both team did very well and we did not know what will happen until the 9th inning. We were 1 point behind and started the last latter half of the 9th inning. Who was able to expect such the happy end! After having lost the very good chance by miss judge, we continued to hit and run and we turned over the game. We did not have such a dramatic win last year. 16x-15 was the result of the second game. Our pitcher threw almost 180 balls in 9 innings.

Well, I really want to play soon after seeing such a good game.

I saw the stage had been built since last Friday, there were lots of people tonight.

I just wondered about deposit system of drink cup. I have seen that since about a year even at concert hall. Maybe it is because of reducing trash. But many younger people would bring their "own" drink without paying 3.7 euro for half litter beer and just throw it somewhere. Is that same in Japan now? I think it is enough that they just prepare many trash boxes and just mention that cans or trash should be thrown into trash boxes, in Europe it never works.

Austria has kept careful stance toward opening job market for Eastern EU countries until now but was forced to open it from EU commission. And from now on, from May 1 2011, people from Poland, Slovalia, Hungary can find a job in Austria without any restriction. In newspapers there were articles last week what would happen to the unemployment rate in Austria, or especially in Vienna where many people want to come, work and live. As the latest statistics shows, to live in Vienna is quite comfortable. Time seems to flow very slowly in the city of culture and music, more space in public places compared to other big European capitals.

Beside this topic, there has been some discussion about the young politician Mr.Sebastian Kurz 24 y.o. for the integration minister. As same as in Germany, growing number of foreingers in Austria is the center of topic due to education. Integration has been always the topic since decades. When I started to live in Austria in 2002, the government dediced to issue German language course coupon for every foreigners who started to live in Austria and they have to finish a certain amount of German lessons at school. But the reality is that there are lots of problems in school classes especially in bigger citires in Austria. More than 40% are from forein families and students cannot make themselves understood in German.

Japan has been saying to accept immigrants to compensate low birth rate, and many foreign people point out that Japan has to move quickly as possible for the countermeasure. I personally do not agree to the opening Japan for immigrants without any condition. To import and adjust what is good in foregn countries; which Japan has been doing since more than a century. They also ahve to see the facts that there are lots of problems in many European capitals about this issue.

The only rule was to ware something orange which I got to know after I reached her house. I took my guest from France with me who is now traveling in Europe with his bicycle and aiming to Budapest and Ljublijana.

Our host told us about the story of this national holiday in the Netherlands. Juliana Louise Emma Marie Wilhelmina the Queen is a princess of van Oranje Nassau and people would ware something orange to celebrate her birthday. (4.30.1909 - 03.20.2004), and that the people there just spend the day drinking and eating. Actually in the foregners' group in Vienna there is no Dutch people as far as I remember. I have never heard of it before. Qeuite interesting is, the current Queen's birthday is on January 31 but they celebrate together on April 30th.

She prepared some salad and snacks which is popular there, also some typical drink Geneva which has the similar flavor as gin. I brought some bottles of wine from Burgenland, where there are many of Austrian red wine are produced. The baseball season has started already and I cannot join most of the group's event, I was just informed about it on the same day. We ate and drank and talk talk talk...

I felt bad during my stay in Steyr for the user meeting of our software, maybe it was because of the very cold hotel room on the roof floor. On the first day, we had a before-night party at other place and I was first back after 24:00. The next day when I woke up I felt very chilly, I asked reception for the additional blanket and they even procured a small heater for me. I slowly felt worse toward weekend, I went back home earlier without working on Friday. I slept whole Saturday when I had to fetch my start number for the marathon. Sunday I slightly felt better but coughed a lot.

My friends participated in the marathon; one for Taffel marathon, so-to-say a relay marathon and she ran 16 km, and the other successfully finished the half marathon.

Sad and pity :(
I wanted to run the marathon with my baseball training shirt with big sign of Japan in front and appeal donation for Japan.

Next marathon, I already decided since last year. I will run in Paris in April.
But after several days I changed my mind and went out where there are many people. I went to my salsa course and asked One of the staffs maintains the Cuban club, if I can put a paper to call for donation for Japan. I am already a so-to-say regular customer, I have taken salsa course continuously for almost six months. But still I was not sure if they would say yes.

Actually I did not have to worry about it at all, they even offered me to put a banner linked to a donation site on their home page, and told me the dimension of the jpeg file. Sometimes things go so easily as imagined and this was the case. If I would get a print out, I may put it on the wall, they promised. I was not able to concentrate on dancing during the lesson, but I got some ideas how I want the banner look like.

It took me about an hour to finish the graphic. I have seen so many tragic pictures in the Internet and did not want to use it which would depress people. I wanted it to be as simple as possible like the Japanese flag. And I just wish that we can hear good news from Japan soon. I sent the file to my friend who told me that she really liked it.

I was invited to an opening ceremony of an art exhibition of an artists' group which my Hungarian teacher organizes, I sent her an e-mail if it is possible to put the banner somewhere in the event space.

I have to find somebody to print it for free so that I would be able to hand over to people in the street. I only have Saturday to do that.

This time, one from Finnland, one from Austria and one from Japan. We met outside of Zieglergasse metro station. I already heard some about Japanese earthquake broke out the day before, but there were not much detailed information available. The Japanese woman who sometimes comes to play badminton in our club also worried much about it. Of course we did. We talked about it while we were waiting for other members. Actually there were still nothing to do without knowing what really happened in Japan.

For the first meeting, I thought about what we would cook. Many foreigners do not have rice cooker at home, but they surely think of sushi as Japanese dish. I wanted to do something different and picked up soba and tofu to use.

We went to an Korean food shop from the metro station, they have lots of Japanese products. We bought some ingredeints which are very important for Japanese food, I added some explanation to it for each. We bought soy sauce, mirin, konbu algen, rice noodle instead of soba due to wheet allergie of one of the members and sake.

First I started to cook kaeshi, basic sauce for noodle mixing mirin, sugar and soy sauce. I told them that it should be kept for some days before using it and it can also be used as teriyaki sauce my mixing more mirin. Today we have to use it just after making it, I added a bit more miron as usual. To procure Japanese ingredients are sometimes very expensive, but sometimes to use alternative made in other countries would cause problem, it does not taste as expected. Difficult decision to take a risk or save money.

Then we stated preparing tofu, cut in pieces and puffed potato starch. I cooked that for the New Year party and many of my friends liked it. Today I wanted to cook tofu with garic stem, but was not able to find at the store. So I used pea insted of that. I let them puff tofu, it is surely not difficult but tofu is very soft and hard not to distroy while cooking.

I fried carrot, onion and soy sprout, then started to cook soup base out of algen. For them it is very hard to imagine to such a black sheet for cooking. Just cook water until it boiled and took algen out of the water, then added the sauce into it. This is for the noodle. My friend had some shrimp and onion in her fridge, I made salad with wakame-algen, shrimp, onion and vinegar with some drops of sesame oil.

Doing all by ourselves　usually takes time, but it is not very difficult and can control salt or sugar as we want. I already got used to it, I cannot imagine if I could have such time when I was in Japan. But it tastes much better than to used "already made" products.

Honestly, mirin made in Korea was somehow different as I imagined, but I thought I was able to cover up. Dishes were nothing gorgeous but just a typical daily Japanese food. It seemed to me that they were all happy with it and wanted to cook sushi for the next time, offered the date already. I wish I could have time for that.

The title is Uncle's dream, and was written by Dostoyevsky. There was a day to read the story in advance to prepare for the play, but I had been so busy and was not able to attend the meeting. I even did not have time to read the book in German neither. It was too ambitious and reckless challenge for me. Some were ill in bed and only four of us where there. This Russian theater play will be held only once a year, I heard, I saw lots of Russian people in the theater. It seemed that all Russian teachers, Russian students or Russian people in Vienna came to see the play.

The play was not very dynamic. We had to concentrate on about what actoresses or actors were talking. It was very very hard although they spoke very clearly. My Russian is still not good enough to follow the story, but I tried to follow words. My friends did understand some, it seemed to me at least.

The play was planned to start from 20:00, but actually it started from 20:30. At the break around 22:00, we wondered how late it would be. Due to the original schedule it was written that it would last 23:00. It is too late for me to wake up for work next day. My friends were also very tired and talked to each other. We agreed to leave the theator without watching the latter half. It was pitty but I again got a motivation to improve my Russian.

A sort of potluck party which is quite popular according to her. I wondered what to cook for that, actually I did not have much time for preparation, I had lots to do on the weekend.

I have cooked in many occasions before but I have never cooked sushi out of many reasons, but I thought of doing chirashi zushi which very little people in Europe know of. And it is relatively easy to prepare.

I did not have to think about what to put in. I still clearly remember the TV commercial of sushi-taro more than 20 years ago, famous instant sushi pack and they sing what is inside. "♪ Ninjin, shiitake, renkon, kanpyo nori mo tsuiteru sushi taro... ♪" (carrot, shiitake, lotus root, drieed gourd shavings and also nori..) And fortunately I had everything at home.

I bought eggs and ginger on Saturday and started to cook, then I had a birthday dance party of my friend until early next day as my previous post. I woke up early on Sunday and prepared the rest before I went to another brunch appointment of my friends. I somehow managed my time to do that.

We had a lots to eat and drink. I took a bottle of Muskateller with me, very fruity white wine for the party. Girls brought sweets like apple pies or cookies. It was actually brunch, but most of us stayed there until 20:00, ate and drank talked talked and talked about nothing and laughed. I was relieved that sushi seemed to be OK for many friends.

A mexican restaurant was opened about 4 months ago and there she and her friend hold salsa course for beginners. On the day when a live Latin music and trial of rum, she reserved a room only for us for celebrating her birthday.

Actually, I did not have any costume, had no time to go out to buy some for that. So I had to go without it. I was the first to be there, I waited for about 20 minutes in the restaurant, she came up with her cat costume with a lovely tail. Then another friend of her in bee costume which I found very funny. There were around 10 people, but not all of them were in costume.

First we ordered something to eat, then slowly live music started and we started, or actually some of us started to dance. With the band members there was no space for dancing actually. My friend told me later that she decided to dance with all the friends came to her party. She seemed to prefer LA stype to Cuban one, so I tried some steps I learned in my previous LA style course before my operation on the hand and I almost forgot steps. I had to ask her to dance in Cuban style.

I think I will take Salsa course LA style by her and her friend to refresh it.
