The activation was originally scheduled to take place in September, but was delayed due to damage sustained in a crash prior to activation.

Motorists should watch for lane and shoulder closures beginning Nov. 21 while crews install the new pole and mast arm for eastbound Highway 10.

Other intersection improvements already in place include a southbound free flow right turn lane on Highway 9 and a westbound acceleration lane on Highway 10.

The signal and intersection improvements will increase safety at the busy intersection.

The intersection work is part of a resurfacing and culvert replacement project on Highway 9 between the north Clay County line and Highway 10. Crews finished the resurfacing portion of the project in September.

The work, which has been scheduled for this Sunday morning, has be rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4, weather permitting. Further information will be provided closer to that date.

All roads to Henderson will be open, all activities will go on as scheduled, and there will be plenty of free Kraut for everyone at this weekend’s Henderson Sauerkraut Days.

Henderson is a small community just minutes south of Shakopee, west of Highway 169. It sits in the northeast corner of Sibley County, a stone’s throw from LeSueur and Scott Counties, and right along one of the more scenic stretches of the Minnesota River. Although Henderson boasted only 866 residents in the 2010 census, it seems to have one of the most active festival communities of any town in Minnesota. The locals host a nationally famous sauerkraut aptly called Sauerkraut Days during the last full weekend of June each year, a hummingbird festival, live musicians every Friday night of the summer and a host of other activities.

Which leads us back to the classic cars.

For the third year in a row, Henderson residents will host the Henderson Classic Car Roll-ins each week. The roll-ins were started by classic car enthusiasts Randy and Kat Notermann in 2009. It started small, and quickly grew. By the end of the first summer there were 40 to 50 classic cars arriving each Tuesday. Randy and Kat promoted the event themselves, did all the planning and covered all the direct costs. When it came time to think about a second summer, they knew they could not do it alone.

Last year, the Henderson Chamber of Commerce lent the Notermanns a hand, helping to organize a committee to share the work of planning, promoting and running the event. It paid off in increased attendance, with 400 registered vehicles last summer, and 167 classic cars lining the streets of Henderson on its biggest night.

This year, the Notermanns continue to head up the Henderson Classic Car Roll-ins. Sponsor’s help share the cost of making the event enjoyable for both classic car owners and the attending public. T-shirts will be available for sale, vendors are welcome to sell their goods, there will be prizes, music of the 50′s and 60′s, food & drink, special guest announcers,  and local businesses will be open.

They’ll start things off with a car cruise billed as the “New Ulm Brewey Cruz and Johnny Cash Review“. The event begins on Main Street in Henderson at 8:00am, with brunch at BitterSweet Coffee & Cafe. The participants will make their way to the brewery of the August Schell Brewing Co. via Herman the German, the Glockenspiel, and the Brown County Museum, with a stop for lunch at George’s Steak House. The whole group will end back in Henderson for the Boss Grant/Johnny Cash review at the Hog Wild Saloon & Eatery’s Event Center.

The weekly Roll-ins begin May 31, and occur every Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. through September 6. There is no fee for registering a classic car in the event, and all classic car owners are encouraged to attend. The event is open to the public, and the Henderson Classic Car Roll-in Committee encourages spectators to come enjoy the display of classic cars and trucks.

Each week, the Committee will secretly select one vehicle as their Classic Car of the Week (it need not be a car; other classic vehicles are also in the running). The owner of this vehicle will be invited to have his car or truck photographed by noted photographer Joel King for inclusion in a calendar to be printed at the end of the season. A street dance featuring the Rhythm Kings will round out the summer on September 10.

Looks like it will be one fantastic classic car summer in Henderson.

The east bound lane of Highway 19 west of Henderson has washed out. Mn/DOT is directing eastbound traffic on Highway 19 to detour onto Fort Road. Westbound traffic may continue to use the roadway at this time. Crews are en route to perform repairs.

A well-known stop along the Minnesota River Scenic Byway, Henderson enjoys a reputation as a hospitable and enjoyable spot for travelers and motorcyclists throughout the summer months, and hosts a popular Sauerkraut festival each summer. But when flooding occurs, as it sometimes does in the Spring and Fall, the route to get to the city becomes more difficult.

There are normally four easy routes into Henderson, one from each direction of the map. But during elevated flood stages, the approaches from the north, east and south flood out, leaving Highway 19 from the west as the only way into and out of town.

After floods last spring and fall, and more flooding occurring now, it’s just one more challenge to strengthen the people of Henderson. This washout on Highway 19, though only affecting traffic in one direction, is a stark reminder that it is within the realm of possibility that all four major routes into Henderson could be compromised. Fortunately, residents of the one-time county seat have other options. And by the time Sauerkraut Days is celebrated this June 24 through 26, there’s likely to be no trace of this difficult flood season.

As of noon today the following Minnesota roads are closed due to flooding:

• MN 19 between MN 93 and US 169 near Henderson
• MN 22 at Le Sueur County Road 21 near Kasota is closed until further notice (Mn/DOT reports that the road surface has collapsed, and is encouraging motorists to use Highway 169 as an alternate route)
• MN 62 between Cottonwood County Road 7 near Dundee and Cottonwood County Road 5 west of the Wilder area
• Westbound US 65 at E. Clark Street in Albert Lea
• MN 93 from north-bound US 169 into LeSueur
• MN 93 between US 169 near Le Sueur and MN 19 in Henderson
• MN 101 between the start of MN 101 and US 912C in Chanhassen

The long-term surface fix to 35E between Ramsey County Road 96 and the I-35E/I-35W split south of Forest Lake involves removing the existing blacktop pavement from the concrete below it and replacing it with an unbonded concrete overlay.  Additionally, the box culvert that carries Clearwater Creek underneath I-35E, south of Anoka County Road 14 in Lino Lakes will be replaced.

Work will start with construction of bypasses to facilitate traffic switches.  After bypass construction is complete, traffic will be restricted to a single lane in each direction during pavement removal and concrete paving. During the paving phase, there will be temporary ramp closures at the CR-96, County Road J and County Road 14 interchanges.  Mn/DOT will schedule staggered closures so that they will not all occur simultaneously.

Traffic will be returned to a four-lane configuration to complete shoulder paving, paving tie-ins at each end of the project and removal of all temporary bypasses, after the concrete paving is completed.  Motorists will encounter some off-peak lane closures as this work is being performed.  The project is scheduled to be completed by November 2011.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has advanced repair and redecking of the Plato Boulevard, Eaton Street and Concord Street bridges south of the Lafayette Bridge. Originally scheduled to be completed in 2012, the redecking work has been advanced to 2011, running concurrently with bridge work and resurfacing planned this year from Belvedere Street in St. Paul south to I-494 in Inver Grove Heights from mid-April to early July.

The project consists of replacing the decks on the Plato Boulevard and Eaton Street bridges and repairing and putting a new concrete surface on the Concord Street bridges.  Additional work includes concrete grinding between Eaton Street and Concord Street to provide a smoother ride for motorists.

As the project begins in mid-May, traffic will be switched to the southbound side of the freeway with two southbound lanes and a single northbound lane.  When work is completed on the northbound bridges, traffic will switch to the northbound lanes with two southbound lanes and one northbound lane until work is completed by late September.
