Many people want to break free from the yoke of the petrol pump, and it’s not surprising given the constantly rising fuel prices. However, when you really start to do your research it becomes obvious that not all the alternatives are particularly practical.

Natural gas

Natural gas is cheaper than petrol by about a third, but only easily available at commercial filling stations in the States. For anyone living in the UK, for example, it would be very tricky to find somewhere to fill up your car with natural gas – there are only fourteen filling stations in the whole country.

Biogas

Biogas is gaining in popularity – for example, many of the cars and buses in Sweden are powered by it. Biogas is renewably sourced through the breakdown of organic matter – such as dead plant and animal materials, animal dung and food waste. Once compressed, the biogas can fuel vehicles. There is the potential for 17% of the UK’s cars to be powered by biogas, but it hasn’t happened yet.

Electric vehicles

These are certainly getting to be more common, especially in urban areas. However there’s still a problem about the distance you can travel in an electric vehicle without having to recharge its battery. And when you stop to charge the battery you have to wait for a length of time – it’s not a question of a few minutes. Instead, drivers still have to wait for a couple of hours at least before continuing their journey. Car manufacturers are reducing the amount of charge time significantly, for example, Honda’s new plug-in hybrid Accord will have a charging time of 1.5 hours on a 240V supply.

Hybrids

Probably the most practical solution for today’s driver who is seeking an alternative to petrol is to drive a hybrid car. As hybrids have a dual source of power – through the combination of an electric motor and a small internal combustion engine that work together – these cars use less fuel than conventional cars. This is because the engine has to work less hard as the electric motor kicks in to assist the engine through acceleration or, with some models, can take over propulsion completely at low speeds.

Hybrids are more expensive than conventional cars to buy, but the premium you pay initially will be paid back through lower fuel costs over the years. Until electric and other alternatives iron out their teething problems, hybrid cars are the most practical choice for today’s fuel-efficient driver.

“Earth Dreams Technology” gives us our first real insight into what’s coming next in the world of automobile technology. It’s a whole set of next generation technological advancements which hugely improve both performance and fuel efficiency at a far higher level than anything that currently exists.

As you might expect from the company that really pioneered green tech through hybrid technology and other innovations, “Earth Dreams” is really all about environmental technological advancement.

Honda Earth Dream Technology

Specifically, it is a whole a series of measures in which the overall efficiency of internal combustion components including the engine, the transmission and electric-powered motor technology, is hugely improved.

The Earth Dreams suite of technology is first to be used in the company’s mini-vehicle N BOX, Honda’s “mini-minivan,” – and will gradually work its way into other models. The company hopes to achieve top of industry fuel efficiency for every category within three years.

It has previously stated its aim to reduce by 30% CO2 emissions for all products sold worldwide by 2020 – relative to emission figures first set for 2000.

Earth Dreams Technology will include:

A petrol engine which achieves top-level driving performance and fuel efficiency.
A compact diesel engine which is first in its class for acceleration, overall performance and fuel efficiency.
CVT at a high level.
A two-motor hybrid drive system.
A high-efficiency, high output electric SH-AWD hybrid system.
A compact, high efficiency electric powertrain for electric vehicles.

Green car

As new cars are built to be ever more eco-friendly, there’s been a gradual decrease in the number of ‘classic’ and vintage cars that you see on the road. But in Japan, there’s a growing trend to refit older cars to run on electric power.

It all started with enthusiasts who had imported cars from Europe and the States back in the 1980s, models like BMWs, Rolls Royce and Jaguar that simply weren’t available in Japan at the time. These cars, though lovingly maintained and driven for years by careful owners, are now getting to the end of their lifespan, but it seems that their owners aren’t willing to part with them just yet. Instead of going to the expense and trouble of sourcing new engine parts from abroad, they’re going to specialist garages like the Auto Works Club Co. in Tokyo, where their cars can be converted to electric power.

The conversion is relatively simple and if done properly, the cars are still legally roadworthy – as long as they pass tests set by the Japanese transport ministry. Added benefits of doing the conversion are that the converted electric cars are low emission cars and therefore more environmentally-friendly, and cost less to run.

Conversion costs are around ¥1 million, and are kept this low by using lead batteries rather than the more costly lithium-ion batteries. After conversion, the electricity required to power the car works out at about ¥1 to ¥2 per km.

Doing a conversion at home isn’t to be recommended unless you have the necessary knowledge about electrics and wiring though.

Similarly, in the States and Europe, there are a number of different hybrid conversion kits available for conventional cars. Hybrid cars are better for the environment because they run on a combination of electric motor and an internal combustion engine. So, although they still require petrol (or diesel) to run, they use less of it.

As people’s favourite cars come to the end of their lifespan, we may see more and more being converted to hybrid or electric power, rather than being scrapped.

Button, Massa, and Webber continued to fight for third position. Moreover on lap 29, the distance of Button and Webber were even only about two seconds. If anything the McLaren was the start of the revolution whereby supercar manufacturers started to really push the boundaries and test what was actually possible.

15 years after it’s original production date the Ferrari F50 still looks unbelievable and astonishing. Ferrari of course have always had a penchant for designing beautiful, agile and often vicious cars, but some would argue that the F50 was the start of the new breed of Ferrari supercars which later lead to the F360, F430 and later the Enzo of course.

Ford GT40

Possibly the best looking supercar ever, certainly the least reliable but with a thoroughbred racing pedigree behind it. If you don’t already know about this car you can’t really call yourself a supercar enthusiast.
