The new Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is open for ordering. Based on the popular Passat Estate, it’s a car that brings rugged versatility to the Passat range with its combination of style, luxury and practicality. What’s more, the new car comes with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION four-wheel-drive technology as standard, making it a tough customer across rugged terrain.

This ability to tackle more demanding road surfaces is reflected in its bold appearance. The Alltrack features a revised front grille with black gloss trim and a honeycomb intake. You will also notice that the newcomer’s ground clearance is 30 mm higher than that of the Estate, and it features anthracite wheel arch protectors and side sills.
We anticipate that the Alltrack will account for 5.5 per cent of the annual Passat Estate volume. As such, from a Retailer allocation perspective Alltrack will not be classed as a separate model, and will instead form part of your Passat Estate allocation.

It seems car supermarkets in the UK are still up to their old game of selling new cars unofficially imported from outside the UK as “UK Spec” vehicles.

To most people when a dealer tells you it’s a “UK spec”, car you take it that it’s not an import, right? Wrong…

They key question to ask is, is it a “UK supplied car with the full manufacturers warranty”? Dealers can import a car to the standard UK spec and try to pass them off as UK cars.

It followed shortages of some components caused by flooding in Thailand, where some of its suppliers are based.

A statement from Honda of the UK Manufacturing said:

“The severe flooding in Thailand requires us to continually monitor the supply of parts, however, the situation has improved sufficiently to allow Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd (HUM) to plan for a return to normal production activities.

“Resumption of production will also see the start of mass production of the new Civic.”

Andy Piatek, director of manufacturing at Honda in Swindon, said: “Our associates have shown great understanding over the last month and we are all now really excited about the prospect of starting to produce our new Civic.”

New car registrations rose by 2.6% in October to 134,944 units, the second increase in three months.
New car registrations over the first 10 months of 2011 were down 4.5%, at 1,688,038 units.
Market on track to achieve full year total of 1.923 million units, but caution remains over 2012.

“October’s new car market rose 2.6% on last year – a positive result despite the uncertain economic climate,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive. “Vehicle manufacturers and their dealer networks are working hard to offer consumers value for money through improved fuel efficiency, low running costs and innovative finance. We expect market conditions to remain challenging and hope the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement later this month will help to boost economic growth and consumer confidence.”

After a year of delays, delays and more delays from new car manufacturers’ Thailand’s recent floods threaten to cause more chaos and increase delays.

Thailand has been inundated with severe floods in its recent history, and the automotive sector which has an annual production capacity of about 2 million units in 2010, is one of the hardest hit industries. The recent inundation of floods in Thailand has not only had a major effect on local automotive production and supply chain disturbances but is also likely to have a short term effect on the regional and global supply of automotive parts and vehicle exports.

Impact of the Flooding in Thailand – Current Situation: Halt of Automotive Production in Thailand Assembly Plants

Thailand is currently experiencing the worst flooding in the last five decades. 26 of the 90 provinces in Thailand have been affected by floods and automotive assembly plants and parts maker factories located mainly in and around Ayutthaya and Pathumthani provinces are suffering from it. Japanese OEMs such as Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Nissan and American OEMs such as GM and Auto Alliance (Ford and Mazda) have assembly locations in Thailand with a combined annual production capacity of approximately 1.7 million – 1.8 million units.

Most of the heavy flooding is happening in the central province of Thailand with Ayutthaya and Pathumthani provinces, that have automotive assemblers and parts suppliers, being the most affected regions. The Honda assembly plant is located in Ayutthaya and hence has been the most affected OEM with flood inundation within the assembly plant. All other OEM assembly locations are outside the flood affected regions such as Chachoengsao (Toyota and Isuzu), Samut Parka (Nissan and Toyota), Chonburi (Mitsubishi), Rayong (Auto Alliance Thailand and GM).

Honda has stopped its production for the next one week mainly because the plant is submerged with water, while Toyota has stopped production for the next one week mainly due to supply chain disruption in Ayutthaya and Pathumthani province. Ford has resumed its passenger vehicle production from this week while its pick-up vehicle production has been halted as of now. General Motors is the least affected OEM mainly due to its plant location and its supplier base located outside the flood affected regions.

Supply Chain Disruption

The floods have had a severe effect on auto parts makers and as a consequence disturb the supply chain structure. The situation has had a cascading effect on automotive assembly and production in Thailand. Almost 10% of total auto parts for local production come from flood affected regions. Toyota, Auto Alliance Thailand, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan are all dependent on auto parts makers in the flood affected region. Ayutthaya and Pathumthani provinces have around 40 auto parts suppliers supplying to most assembly plants in Thailand.

Impact of the Flooding in Thailand – Future Strategies Likely to Be Adopted by OEMs

Short Term Production Loss

The floods are likely to affect automotive assembly in the short term. The production halt might continue for the next few weeks depending on the severity of the flooding situation. Honda, which is the most severely affected OEM, is likely to have a production loss of about 10,000-15,000 units with the closure of its plant for about 5 weeks. Toyota and Isuzu are likely to lose the next 2-3 weeks of production due to shortage of parts supply with loss of estimated production volume to be approximately 30,000-35,000 and 10,000-15,000 units respectively. Frost & Sullivan estimate the overall production volume loss of approximately 80,000-100,000 units for all OEMs in Thailand, if they lose the next 2-3 weeks of production. However, OEMs are likely to recover from this production loss by increasing working hours and running the plants at full capacity for the next 2 months.

Short Term Production Shift to Other ASEAN Regions

To compensate for the loss of production in Thailand assembly plants, OEMs are likely to look for a short term production shift to other ASEAN regions, especially Indonesia and Malaysia. For example: Honda assembles Civic, Jazz, CR-V, City models in its Thailand assembly plant, but has the option to build the Jazz model in Indonesia which has already been assembling the model for years.

Impact on International Markets

In 2010 almost 900,000 units vehicles representing 54-55% of total vehicles assembled in Thailand were exported. The main export regions include Australia, New-Zealand, Europe, Middle East, Mexico, South Africa and Brunei. The vehicle models that are presently exported from flood affected OEMs include Honda vehicles such as Jazz, Civic, City, Accord and the Toyota Hilux pick-up truck.

Long Term Strategy Change Related to Supply Chain

Supply chain disruptions due to floods have been the main reason for many OEMs to stop their assembly lines. Some of the factors that are likely to be considered by OEMs in the future are:

1) Increase the stock-pile in terms of auto parts and re-visit the process of JIT (Just In Time) so that OEMs have enough stock for at least a month, if there are any disruptions related to auto parts supply.

2) Multi-sourcing strategy, involving not only sourcing parts from different suppliers but from different regions, which will have a lower impact, if this situation arises again.

3) Climatic de-risking of the supply chain involving OEM investments at geographic locations least impacted due to natural disasters. Japanese OEMs in India, especially Honda, have already started increasing their localisation content (80%-90%) and the remaining auto parts are likely to be supplied either from Japan or other ASEAN regions.

The automotive production in Thailand will be affected in the near term due to the lack of auto parts supply as a result of the floods but is not likely to have a medium-long term effect on Thailand as an automotive production hub in the region.

We have previously highlighted certain car manufacturers have had a number of issues to do with cars not being produced in accordance with the estimated delivery dates they provide to their dealers at the time orders are placed.

Having just conducted some research we can now highlight that Skoda is now the worst manufacturer at honouring its estimated delivery dates mainly for the Skoda Yeti, followed by BMW and Volvo.

Ford and VW seem to have now resolved most of the delay issues surrounding the industry and most manufacturers expect to resume normal delay dates of an average of 12 week by the end of this year.

This has however left allot of car buyers waiting months longer than the anticipated delivery promised by their local dealer and in many cases dealers have not been able to even confirm when the cars would be delivered creating affectively a back order or cars on their systems.

Naturally this leaves dealers in a very difficult position as they are powerless to do anything about the situation and often do not have any updates to provide their customers.

Please note some manufacturers are not able to provide a confirmed delivery date until the order is actually placed on the manufacturers ordering system, (after you have paid your deposit to the dealer). In addition, delivery times can vary and delays of a number of days or even a few weeks are not unusual. Generally speaking dealers will order these limited cars to the standard manufacturers specification without factory fitted options. Therefore if you are after a new vehicle with factory options (sunroof, leather seats, etc…) it is unlikely your local dealer or other dealers with have them in stock so they will have to factory order you the vehicle.
Dealers can also check availability with the Manufacturers central stock systems as well as access other dealers vehicles however many dealer will not show vehicles as being available on the manufacturers systems as they are sometimes reluctant to swap their vehicles with other competing dealers therefore dealers will always try to sell you what they have and not what you want.

If there are any cars in stock that you are aware of or you simply want to place an order for any stock vehicle you can simply place an order on our system for that exact vehicle on the basis of us obtaining an offer for an immediate delivery vehicles also matching Your Maximum Price in addition to any other conditions of purchase that you may specify.

Remember you are more likely to over achieve on Your Maximum Price using our service if there are several vehicles in stock, as dealers will then be competing with others and are always willing to offer better deals for cars they can delivery and register in current calendar month.

At least Transport Secretary Philip Hammond’s proposal to introduce a new 80mph speed limit on Britain’s motorways isn’t designed to make you poorer.

Believe it or not, the existing 70mph speed limit has been in force since 1965. Since the heyday of the Beatles, petrol prices have rocketed, hemlines have risen (drastically) and fallen, but British drivers have zealously adhered to the fiction of the 70mph speed limit.

The reality, according to the Government, is that up to 49 per cent of drivers are already exceeding the maximum speed limit. So, bringing in a new 80mph speed limit simply reflects reality.

At the other end of the scale, the proposed new 80mph speed limit would be balanced by an extension of the 20mph limit in urban areas. So you’d be much less likely to be run over outside your home by a speeding neighbour en route to the motorway.

Why is the Government doing this now? For Mr Hammond it’s all about getting Britain moving again. He claims a new 80mph speed limit on motorways will help “generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times”.

That’s right: Britain is unable to drag itself out of recession because everyone is driving to work too slowly.

The consultation on a change to the motorway speed limit won’t begin until 2012 but already the debate has begun. Friends of the Earth have pointed out that the proposal doesn’t sit well with David Cameron’s ambition to run “the greenest government ever”.

For Friends of the Earth, more speed is simply a route to increased fuel consumption, higher carbon emissions and a greater financial burden on businesses and individuals.

A new 80mph speed limit wouldn’t come into force until 2013. Until then, drivers will exercise the same healthy respect for speed cameras as they squander precious minutes on the way to work.

Back in the 70s it was was motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel grabbing the headlines and breaking his bones with his feats of derring-do. As the London 2012 Olympics looms on the horizon a long-jumper has been getting in on the act by vaulting over a line-up of Mini London 2012 Edition Models.

The man with the extremely long reach is England long jump champion JJ Jegede. This week at Potter’s Field in London, he successfully vaulted over three Mini London 2012 cars — a distance of around 6 metres. To put that in context, a top-class jumper might achieve 7-8 metres if conditions were favourable.

Of course JJ Jegede wasn’t in the hunt for a medal here. But he did have the pressure of delivering a success story for the Mini London 2012 and the London 2012 Olympics. Bear in mind that there was no safety net!

In preparation for JJ’s leap of faith, the run-up track and sandpit were raised to the same height as the roofs of the line-up of Mini London 2012 vehicles. After all, he is a long-jumper not a high-jumper.

JJ’s (puntastic) take on his brave auto vs athlete feat was: “I’ve always wanted to demonstrate my ability in a fun way, so I jumped at the chance to perform an Evel Knievel-style display.”

Mini UK is an official partner to Team GB through its affiliation with London 2012 partner BMW. It is also partner to the ParalympicsGB Team and hopes the association will prove inspirational to athletes across all disciplines.

There are limits, of course. I’m sure Mini UK would join me in saying that what JJ Jegede did comes with a great big “don’t try this at home” warning.

Only (you guessed it) 2,012 of these limited edition Mini London 2012 vehicles will be built. Naturally they’ll be themed in patriotic red, white and blue. Appropriately, the three cars used for JJ’s jump were all fitted with JUMP! registration plates.

“When a woman’s at the wheel, Polyglas means more than mileage.”

It’s probably exaggerating to say that this Goodyear tyres advert from 1967 is the most sexist of all time. After all, there’s so much competition for that dubious accolade.

Leaving aside that dodgy spelling of Polyglas, this 60-second commercial isn’t just an amusing museum piece in terms of its attitudes and production. With more than a million hits on YouTube this advert is still right at the cutting edge of the debate about attitudes towards women drivers.

I use the word “debate” with some hesitation to describe what takes place on forums like YouTube and Twitter these days. I should warn that if you’re of a sensitive disposition many of the comments posted under the Polyglas video are highly offensive to women — in any decade.

“Dear Goodyear, please place this commercial back on the networks. But not from 5pm-6:30pm because that’s the time women are cooking dinner.” (anonymous poster, 2011)

Is it naive of me to admit that I can’t believe how many of these “women belong in the kitchen” comments I’ve seen on message boards recently?

Putting the outrage aside, though, it is interesting just how quickly and how easily some male commenters fall into the same lazy and misogynistic patterns when the subject of women behind the wheel is raised.

Some might claim that joking about old adverts is just harmless fun and that any woman who objects to being ridiculed is simply lacking the humour gene. Wrong. It is good to be able to laugh about sexual stereotypes — sometimes — but the debate has to move beyond that playground level.

I’d like to think that these chauvinists are in the minority. But it really doesn’t help women drivers in 2011 to feel that there’s still this groundswell of sexist opinion circulating on the internet and permeating into the “real” world.

On a positive note, there are some great websites out there now, like the FOXY Ladies Drivers Club in the UK and Women-Drivers.com in the US. These sites help put women drivers in touch with female-friendly dealers and services, as well as providing a safe and non-sexist environment for ladies to discuss motoring issues.

In an ideal world, women drivers wouldn’t have to seek out women-only sites for their motoring needs. They should know that every site is like AutoeBid — a place for information and not denigration.

Good things come to he or she who waits. If you’re someone who regularly books their holiday just days before departure, you’ll know that timing is everything. So before you head off to your local car dealer, check your calendar and try to hit:

That’s right: Friday afternoon is a great time to choose the car dealership over a lingering lunch in the pub. You’ll get the dealer’s attention and you might get a bargain.

Remember, salesmen live and die by their targets. You want to be approaching them at a time when they’re keen to "close". That’s usually when a month or quarter is drawing to a close and they’re under pressure to make their figures look as good as possible.

Autumn car bargain or early Christmas present?

Think of it as early Christmas shopping or getting a jump on the sales, but October-December is often the best time to buy a car. You’ll often find that dealers are offering generous discounts then because they want to clear stock before the new models arrive in January.

If you can drag yourself off the sofa, that "dead" post-Christmas period will also find dealers full of seasonal good cheer. They want to keep those order books ticking over and you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Here are a few more tips to bear in mind:

Wait until the new plate vehicles are released and you might pick up a great deal on a previous plate model.

Consider buying the previous generation car at the time the new model is first launched.

A stagnant economy and freezing weather: two topics guaranteed to strike a chill in the hearts of British motorists. After last winter’s travel chaos, SEAT is getting behind a campaign by TyreSafe to encourage drivers to fit winter tyres.

This year October isn’t just about Halloween: it’s also Tyre Safety Month. The Spanish manufacturer might not be the most obvious partner for TyreSafe. But who could argue with the not-for-profit organisation’s motto that “Safe tyres save lives”. (I’m sure it sounds even better in Spanish.)

You might be banking on avoiding snow until your annual skiing trip next March — but that would be a mistake. Your tyres aren’t just affected by snow and ice on the roads. Once the temperature drops below 7°C the tread compound in standard tyres starts to harden and there’s less grip.

Winter tyres have several, potentially life-saving properties:

• A higher natural rubber content than standard summer tyres. This allows them to remain softer and more flexible even when you’ve got icicles hanging from your garage door.
• A different tread pattern for improved traction.
• A squarer shoulder profile and defined shoulder blocks.

Let’s not forget about sipes, either. They are the thin slits cut in winter tires to improve traction in snow and ice. In case you were wondering, “siping” was named after John F Sipe. The enterprising Mr Sipe cut slits in the bottom of his shoes to stop himself slipping over at work.

The network of 120 SEAT dealers is promoting the TyreSafe message that fitting winter tyres is necessary and not that much of a chore. In a chilling demonstration video, two SEAT Ibizas take to an ice rink to demonstrate how much longer an emergency stop takes in summer tyres.

With drivers up to six times more likely to have an accident in winter as in summer, it makes sense to switch your tyres now. After all, you wouldn’t walk around in flip-flops in December, would you?

“Tell me, what do we do on a caravan holiday?” asked a puzzled Jeremy Clarkson during the infamous “Top Gear goes to Dorset” episode a few years ago. If only that ill-fated trip had begun in a Volkswagen Jetta Sport 2.0TDI DSG, which has just been awarded the accolade of Caravan Club Towcar of the Year 2012.

To be fair, I don’t think we can blame their catalogue of misfortunes solely on the Kia Cerato, which was a previous winner of the Caravan Club’s greatest accolade. No disrespect to VW, but I doubt any vehicle could improve the Top Gear trio’s unenviable record of trashing the Great Outdoors. Still, it does make for great TV.

But back to the Volkswagen Jetta Sport, which picked up the top honour in its under £25,000 price class. It was then named overall winner of the 29th Caravan Club Towcar of the Year, held this week at the Royal Automobile Club in London.

To be eligible for this year’s Awards, vehicles had to be newly launched between 1 August 2010 and 30 September 2011, though substantially modified existing models could also qualify.

The Volkswagen Jetta Sport was put through its paces last month at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire. You won’t be suprised to hear that none of the “driving” or “caravanability” (is that even a word?) judges were drawn from the ranks of Top Gear presenters.

Apparently a key caravanability criterion is a vehicle’s ability to carry a set of awning poles. But when you’re on holiday it’s equally important to know how to react should the caravan go up in flames.

Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert was special guest at the Awards ceremony. He attended the testing sessions and also presented the Class awards to representatives of the winning manufacturers.

Other winners on the night included the Škoda Superb Estate Elegance 2.0 DSG and the Volkswagen Touareg Escape 3.0 V6 TDI. The latter came out on top in the £32,000 price bracket.

Star of more gung-ho war movies than John Wayne, the Jeep is as American as french fries and apple pie. Last weekend’s sellout Goodwood Revival marked the centenary of Ford of Britain and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. But Jeep — celebrating its 70th birthday — also came to the party.

Thanks to a sponsorship agreement with the Goodwood Revival, the American 4WD titan was able to make a corner of West Sussex feel just like home — at least for a few hours.

With record crowds of 138,000 this year, there was no shortage of fans to enjoy the Jeep exhibition areas. For 50s nostalgia buffs there there was the classic Jeep diner and Jeep at March Motor Works, with a Jeepster displayed in a typical US garage of the era.

Elsewhere there was Jeep at the Earls Court Motor Show, where classic 50s and 60s Jeep vehicles rubbed shoulders with contemporary models like the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Compass.

A great party needs the right soundtrack. Though a rock band calling themselves the Milkshakers doesn’t sound very rock ‘n’ roll to me, they were backed up by the Lindy Hop dancers.

Jeep Chrysler’s UK Brand Director Nigel Land was thrilled to have been part of such a successful weekend: “We were able not only to revel in the heritage of the remarkable Jeep brand, but also to show people the stunning new Jeep range of vehicles that we are selling today.”

Over the past seven decades iconic Jeep models have featured in every TV show from Desperate Housewives and Breaking Bad, to CSI . The indispensable Internet Movie Cars Database also reveals some of Jeep’s big screen highlights:

Feast your mince pies on these! Those cheeky chappies at the DVLA have some personalised number plates to tempt fans of the much-loved BBC comedy show Only Fools and Horses.

Two of the star attractions at the DVLA Personalised Registrations auction next week would be of special interest to legendary Cockney wheeler dealer Derek “Del Boy” Trotter (made famous by actor David Jason).

DE11 BOY and EA57 END will go under the hammer on 28 September, with reserve prices of £3,000 and £1,000 respectively. As the DVLA’s Damian Lawson put it: “These two plates are proving hugely popular with immense interest from potential buyers already surrounding them.”

You could say that the Del Boy plate is the perfect follow-up to the DVLA’s eagerly anticipated launch of 11 series registrations in December 2010. You don’t have to be a fast talker like Del Boy to enumerate all the possibilities offered by putting that “ll” combination on personalised number plates.

The three-day auction isn’t taking place in Peckham, but in the much more upmarket surroundings of the Down Hall Country House Hotel, near Bishop’s Stortford. Even if you’re not a fan of Only Fools and Horses there will be plenty of other tempting lots on offer.

The “star” registration next week, with a reserve of a cool £10,000, will be 36 O. Or you could take a punt on the Number of the Beast with the 666 A plate (reserve price £3,000).

What about Lord Coe, a man with two Olympic gold medals and the chairman of the Olympic organising committee for the 2012 Olympics? Surely the perfect thanks from a grateful nation would be to buy him those distinctive BO55 COE personalised number plates.

That way, we’ll be all able to spot him as London comes to a grinding halt during the inevitable Olympic traffic jams next summer. Let’s be realistic — Seb will be taking a helicopter, won’t he?

“Women, for pity’s sake don’t drive” concludes Harry Enfield’s public service announcement spoofing the bad old days of male chauvinism. Has anything changed? Every new survey about women car buyers in the UK suggests that they’re still confronting old-fashioned attitudes on the forecourt and beyond.

For many UK consumers the internet is now their first choice for grocery shopping, DVDs or even a new TV. When it comes to buying cars, British motorists are happy to do their research online. But they still favour traditional dealerships over UK online car sales through sites like AutoeBid. Bridging that confidence gap is an even bigger issue for female car buyers.

In June 2011, research by Mintel revealed that 200,000 new and used cars were bought online in the UK during 2010. That sounds like a big number — until you put it in the context of 8.1 million total car sales during the period.

The problem isn’t down to a lack of options. The choice for UK online car sales ranges from car supermarkets, online brokers and eBay Motors to AutoeBid’s award-winning reverse car auction process.

In 2008, a survey by the FOXY Lady Drivers Club of 332 of its members showed that respondents wanted access to more unbiased information from dealers before the hard sell kicked in. London’s West End can be a no-go zone in the weeks leading up to Christmas. But this year the inaugural Regent Street Motor Show will provide a welcome relief from less-than-dazzling light displays, C-list celebrities and frazzled fellow shoppers.

On Saturday 5 November the RAC and the Regent Street Association will join forces to present a free motoring spectacular that will reflect the best of veteran cars and brand-new green vehicles.

The Regent Street Motor Show will cover more than a third of a mile of the famous London shopping parade — from Piccadilly Circus up to Conduit Street. The centrepiece will be the Concours d’Elegance, which will include around 100 19th-century veteran cars. Drivers and passengers will be in elegant period attire — so as not to detract from the beauty of the vehicles.

In a neat twist, the Regent Street Motor Show will act as a sort of crossover event for two major rallies centred around Brighton that weekend.

So, if you’re a fan of the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, the Regent Street Motor Show will offer a preview of some of the vehicles taking part in Sunday’s rally.

For those more interested in eco-friendly cars than elegant motoring, the Brighton to London RAC Future Car Challenge will also take place on Saturday 5 November. Visitors to London will able to see some of the energy-efficient 21st-century cars that have just completed the run up from the South Coast.

Twentieth-century cars will also get their share of the spotlight at the inaugural Regent Street Motor Show, in a celebration of 1960s motoring. For a few hours “Swinging London” will swing again, as Jaguar E-type and Mini Cooper both celebrate a half century. (Feel free to turn up in a miniskirt or flares.)

The organisers are expecting crowds of up to 250,000 for the Regent Street Motor Show, which runs from 10.30am to 4pm. That figure would be even higher if they could find a 007 to get behind the wheel of the Jaguar E-type.

Not content with being married to England rugby hero Mike Tindall, Zara Philips also took delivery of another object of desire earlier this month. She’s the proud owner of the very first new Range Rover Evoque — 2.2 litre in Stornaway Grey.

But with the first year’s allocation of the must-have model already sold out, the options for everyone else seem to be restricted to grand theft auto or good old-fashioned patience.

If those pictures of Zara posing outside Burghley House with her Range Rover Evoque made you green with envy, you could head over to the Natural History Museum next month. The Museum is hosting the London Press Club Ball on 13 October and a Range Rover Evoque is one of the prizes in the charity auction.

Modestly described as a “glittering upmarket event”, the London Press Club Ball will see more than 400 leading journalists, executives and VIPs raising money for the Journalists’ Charity.

Jaguar Land Rover is the automotive sponsor of the event, so it makes sense that a year’s driving of its award-winning Range Rover Evoque is the star auction prize this year. So, one lucky entrant in this “money can’t buy” auction will get an experience that’s superior to any exotic holiday — or even a honeymoon with Mike Tindall.

That’s not all. Jaguar Land Rover will also auction a special Jaguar driving experience at the Nürburgring, scene of Lewis Hamilton’s F1 win back in July. The company is also donating £15,000 to the Journalists’ Charity.

The Journalists’ Charity was set up 150 years ago to help journalists who have fallen on hard times. In a year dominated by negative stories about News International it’s tempting to speculate about the destination of some of the cash raised at this year’s Ball.

Will hard-up members of the Murdoch family qualify for a handout? Perhaps the lucky winner of the Range Rover Evoque could offer Rupert a free chauffeur service for the next 12 months — just to help him out.

Cheap and green are not words I’d normally associate with Russian billionaires. But among the new faces at Frankfurt 2011 is the appealingly named Yo-Auto — a venture that teams the Russian truck maker Yarovit with Mikhail Prokhorov’s Onexim investment group.

Wealthy Russians put football teams and fast cars high on their list of “Must Haves” and Prokhorov already owns the New Jersey Nets basketball team. He’s ranked only the world’s 59th richest man, according to Forbes, which must give him the oligarch’s equivalent of an inferiority complex.

Still, Prokhorov’s fortune is estimated $13.4 billion — a sum that would purchase quite a few Yo-Auto cars. That’s because the new company isn’t about high-end motors. The aim is to produce eco-friendly hybrids that will cost less than $10,000 (around £6,200).

In December 2010 Prokhorov unveiled models ranging between $12,000-15,000 and covering the hatchback, van and crossover markets. This week Frankfurt got a look at the Yo Concept, which uses a range extender petrol engine. But Yo-Auto says that the first little Yos to roll off the production line will include conventional petrol engines.

Yo-Auto CEO Andrei Biryukov says they’ll have to buy car parts that are not manufactured in Russia. This would include electronics and some parts of the suspension system.

In August work began on constructing a new plant near St Petersburg to manufacture these budget-price vehicles. Yo-Auto envisages an initial capacity of 45,000 cars per annum, which would double during the second phase. The plant is due to come on stream in the second half of 2012.

The pictures of the Yo-Concept reveal a stylish design with capacious doors that offer easy access for partying oligarchs.

But you have to wonder how the Yo-mobile itself will fare when it eventually hits the roads. Though it promises to do an eco-friendly 67mpg, will a top speed of 75mph and a cruising range of 249 miles really cut it in the millionaire playgrounds of Europe?

Car manufacturers love to fuel buyers’ fantasies by suggesting what a new vehicle can do for your image. But as Volvo’s Concept You arrives at Frankfurt, it seems the company’s modest aim is to make
life “less complicated and more enjoyable”.

The Concept You gives a strong hint about what Volvo’s next large sedan will look like. According to Stefan Jacoby, Volvo’s President and CEO, this means “contemporary Scandinavian design, exquisite craftsmanship and intuitive technology”.

After revealing the Concept Universe earlier this year, Volvo has been hanging around Twitter and Facebook to find out what potential customers really think about its new baby. Of course they’ve done surveys, too, to get feedback on the Concept Universe.

What’s the result of all those helpful Tweets? The Concept You has evolved with a more coupé-like profile than its predecessor, with the front giving a nod towards what the company calls “a more classic Volvo look”. (I don’t think that’s a reference to soccer moms.)

Let’s take a closer look at what Volvo’s “Designed Around You” strategy has done for the Concept You:

• It’s a large, luxurious sedan than combines classic Volvo elegance with “a new, sculpted Scandinavian form language”.
• The Concept You shows how Volvo’s new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) can open up dynamic design possibilities — as well as offering  technological advantages.
• By including intuitive smart pad technology, Volvo shows it’s ahead of the game in offering “super-functional connectivity features”.

Volvo is keen to sell the idea of luxury and maximum driving pleasure — but without throwing environmental consciousness out of the window. Apparently it’s all about being “intuitive and uncomplicated”.

But once you hear more about the Concept You — hand-tufted wool carpets, hand-crafted walnut interiors and “FreshAir” subwoofer — I bet green is the furthest thought from your mind. It all sounds like the kind of “Scandinavian inspired environment” I could move into.

In footballing terms Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion are currently lying mid-table in the Barclays Premier League. But when it comes to uninsured driving, drivers from the city of Birmingham are topping the table.

New figures released by the MIB reveal that the overall level of uninsured driving in the UK has dropped by 25 per cent in the last five years. In the West Midlands and West Yorkshire the news is not so good. The number of drivers without insurance in these areas is up to eight times the national average.

Leading the League of Shame for 2010 is Birmingham B9 (up from second place last year). Then it’s Birmingham B10 and B8, followed by various parts of Bradford. London can take some pride in the thought that none of its postcodes made the top (or should that be bottom) 20 this time.

MIB Chief Executive Ashton West spells it out: “We cannot stand by and let uninsured driving continue, otherwise the honest motorist will keep paying the bills for the injury and damage caused to people and property.”

Other alarming findings include:

• 34 per cent of all uninsured drivers are under the age of 30
• One in 10 of drivers in the 18-34 age group are are unaware that car insurance is a legal requirement
• Honest motorists are subsidising uninsured driving to the tune of around £30 per insurance premium

These figures come from the Motor Insurance Database (that’s MID for all you acronym lovers), which is managed by MIB. Since 2001 MID has been the sole central insurance record for the UK’s 34 million vehicles.

In 2011 MID has an important role as part of the Continuous Insurance Enforcement scheme. Registered keepers of vehicles who don’t appear to have insurance can expect a letter from MID reminding them of their legal obligations and of the penalties for non-compliance.

Drivers can avoid MID’s Big Brother approach by following some of the advice in the famous Monty Python sketch. Prices, of course, are subject to change . . .

Can anything upstage London’s ebullient Mayor, Boris Johnson? He was active on both sides of the Thames yesterday, with wheelchair tennis in Trafalgar Square and a test drive of Renault’s Fluence Z.E. saloon at Battersea Power Station.

London’s great white elephant (I mean the Power Station) was hosting Boris and EcoVelocity 2011, the Low Carbon Motor Festival. UK consumers got their first sight of the 100 per cent electric Fluence Z.E when the Mayor took part in the opening parade of electric and low-carbon vehicles.

Swapping his usual bicycle for something with a more 21st-century profile, Boris said: “I was delighted to try out one of Renault’s electric vehicles and glide it silently around the EcoVelocity test track.” It seems unlikely that Boris would do anything quietly, so perhaps Renault’s stylish 5-seater has more going for it than I realised.

The four-door Fluence Z.E will go on sale in the UK in the first half of 2012. (Just in time for those Olympic traffic jams.) It will be priced from £17,850 on the road — that takes account of the generous deduction of £5,000 for the government’s Plug-In Car Grant. That scheme runs until 31 March 2012 and also covers vehicles like the Vauxhall Ampera, Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Plug-In.

An extra financial incentive for Fluence Z.E buyers is that they will be hiring rather than purchasing the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery. So, for £69.60 per month (including VAT) you can banish your fears of battery longevity and replacement costs.

Renault’s vision for an electric vehicle future also includes the two-seater Twizy, priced at a competitive £6,690 and an electric van, the Kangoo Van Z.E.

Not content with covering the Capital with bike stands, Boris is also firmly behind the Source London network, which aims to provide a membership scheme with 1300 charge points in place by 2013.

EcoVelocity 2011 will run from 8-11 September — unless those “range anxiety” fears prove valid and it runs out of juice.

They brought you the Yeti and now Skoda will sponsor the King of the Mountains Jersey at the Tour of Britain 2011 cycle race. It’s part of a deal that makes the company an Official Car Partner of the event, which runs from 11-18 September.

Of course there’s nothing abominable about Skoda’s association with the last major cycling event in Britain before the 2012 Olympics. Skoda’s longstanding links with the sport aren’t surprising, given that the company started life in the 19th century as a bike manufacturer in what is now the Czech Republic.

Skoda is already known as an official partner of iconic cycling events like the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. Now cycling fans and Skoda aficionados will be able to watch its fleet of 50 vehicles nipping round the highways and byways of Britain in a race that covers around 767 miles.

Sixteen teams of six riders will compete in the Tour of Britain 2011. Five of these will be supported by Skoda vehicles and this will include two British UCI Continental teams — Rapha Condor Sharp and Team Raleigh.

Unlike a lot of sports sponsorship, Skoda’s role will be considerably more active than hiding behind a Skoda billboard or handing out prizes to the stage winners. After all, this is a brand said to be “synonymous with energy and adventure”.

If you see some hapless rider impaled on a barbed wire fence (as in this year’s Tour de France) a medic in a Skoda will be on hand to patch him up. It all makes for a much more compelling story than anything yet dreamt up by TV advertisers.

The highlights — from a cycling and Skoda viewpoint — should be the three King of the Mountains sprints on each stage of the Tour of Britain 2011.

So after scooping the Auto Express Car of the Year in 2010 for the Yeti, Skoda will hand out King of the Mountains jerseys to some average-sized but speedy mountain men during the eight-day event.

An (unlucky) 13 month-streak of falling new car sales in the UK has finally come to an end.

It would be premature to start bandying around phrases like “Sizzling Sales in August”, so we’ll leave that claim to the ice-cream manufacturers. Let’s just say that the August 2011 new car sales figures released yesterday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) are a small boost in a challenging market.

We’ll start with the positives. August 2011 saw total new registrations up to 59,346 units, which represents a year-on-year increase of 7.3 per cent. The private sector has seen a notable recovery, growing 10.7 per cent last month — the first rise since June 2010. The fleet sector is also up 4.5 per cent.

Now for the cold hard reality: any improvement has to be viewed in the context of the August 2010 market being the worst on record. The bigger picture is that registrations for 2011 to date are down 6.1 per cent on last year.

Also, the August 2011 new car sales are statistical small beer in the context of new car sales as a whole. September — with the launch of the new ’61 plate — is what really counts. As Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of SMMT puts it: “The September new car market is always important for the UK motor industry, accounting for around 17% of the full year’s registrations.”

What else can we learn from the August 2011 new car sales? Well, small can be beautiful.

The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) says consumers are really seeing the advantages of downsizing to models with cheaper running costs. The figures bear that out with the Mini segment up 34.5 per cent and the Supermini segment rising by 17.6 per cent in August.

Fuel economy improvements will continue to dominate the thoughts of prospective buyers, wincing at the thought of further rises in petrol prices.  Oh, and consumers can be seduced by those “competitive finance offers” — like three years’ free servicing.

Most of all Britons just love a fiesta. (Not in the Spanish “party” sense of course.)  The August 2011 new car sales figures show that once again the Ford Fiesta is the bestselling model in the  new car market — for the month and  the year to date.

These men look pretty pleased with themselves and why not. Don’t be fooled by the picture: they haven’t reinvented the wheel or auditioned to replace Jeremy, James and Richard on Top Gear. (Sorry guys, you just don’t have that middle-aged public schoolboy look.) No, these are the faces behind Productiv Limited, a new UK business created to help bring new technology developers to the marketplace.

Productiv’s support should create a mutually beneficial way for small- and medium-sized companies to work with international vehicle manufacturers and their tier 1 suppliers. Chief executive Richard Bruges (above, centre) says “It links new technology developers with the investment, engineering, production and commercial partners necessary for bringing upcoming low carbon technologies to market.”

These are tough times for European vehicle manufacturers with customers increasingly nervous about splashing out on a new set of wheels. Then they face a decade of worrying about huge fines, should they fail to to meet emissions regulations targets. What can be done?

That’s where the superheroes of Productiv come in. The company will allow both the technology producers and their end users to start small and keep risks low, beginning with low-volume production runs of up to 20,000 units.

The innovators, movers and shakers will get expert help from Productiv about developing their product and satisfying their customers but without having to give up valuable intellectual property rights.

For the manufacturers, Bruges says they’ll be able to “access essential new technologies from outside their supply chain without exposing themselves to unacceptable risks of dealing direct with small businesses”.

This sounds like a veiled reference to some of the mad inventors you see every week on Dragons’ Den. So it’s appropriate that Productiv will be involved in the technology presentations at this week’s Low Carbon Vehicle Event at Rockingham, hosted by Cenex.

Major vehicle manufacturers, including BMW, General Motors and Jaguar Land Rover will sit in on a series of five-minute presentations from the technology developers. Bruges hopes the focus will be on problem solving and in particular on emissions reduction solutions.

Will this new spin on Dragons’ Den be friendly and non-confrontational? We hope so.

Timing is everything. As the kids head back to class, the new Citroën Tubik Concept arrives to turn the routine of the daily school run into a fun-packed adventure.

The Citroën Tubik Concept will make its debut at Frankfurt next week and it’s being billed as a “high-tech executive shuttle”. The word “shuttle” always has dreary airport runway connotations for me, but Citroën’s latest addition to the Multicity project is aiming to put the fun back into travel.

On a historical note, the Citroën Tubik Concept owes a debt to the classic Citroën TUB (it stands for Traction Utilitaire Basse), which later morphed into the Citroën TUC van and then the bestselling Type H.

Measuring 4.80m long, 2.08m wide and 2.05m tall, the Citroën Tubik Concept is a nine-seater, with a “lounge-style cocoon” that’s designed for group road trips. The modular seats offer lots of flexibility and the gadgets include a huge semi-circular screen with surround sound. It sounds as though trips to the cinema would be almost redundant. You could just stay in the cocoon with your mates and enjoy the big screen experience for free.

Inside you can luxuriate in felt seats, silken backrests and even a leather floor (?), but as you can see, it’s also pretty eye-catching on the outside. Two large doors are almost seamlessly integrated into that two-tone exterior — metallic grey with pearlescent white at either end.

While the kids are glued to the big screen, the driver will be stuck in what the designers have dubbed the “cyclotron”. This is a module that incorporates the seat, steering wheel, pedal assembly and curved head-up display in one super-sleek circular form.

Despite its tub-like shape, the Citroën Tubik Concept doesn’t aspire to being a big old gas guzzler. Utilising Citroën’s innovative Hybrid4 technology, and with optimised aerodynamics, this vehicle maintains CO2 emissions at a level comparable to a regular saloon.

With its 22-inch wheels, low rolling resistance tyres and Hydractive suspension technology the Citroën Tubik Concept works very hard to overcome its less than alluring shape.

Bentley has been enjoying a buoyant 2011, with global sales in the first half of the year up by 20 per cent. Now the company is joining forces with another distiguished British brand, Linley, adding extra lustre to some of the world’s most luxurious vehicles.

This very British collaboration involves the creation of a limited edition of 10 Continental Flying Spurs (CFS). These models will be sold in China, which is currently Bentley’s fastest growing market.

If you don’t hang out in London’s ritziest streets or read Hello! magazine, you may not be aware that David Linley (HM the Queen’s nephew) founded his furniture company in 1985.

Linley’s contribution to the Bentley Limited Edition CFS won’t be hard to spot. Instead of plain old Bentley chestnut or walnut adorning their wood surfaces, discerning buyers will be enjoying the designer’s specially selected Santos rosewood veneers.

What else will Linley be doing to jazz up the Bentley Limited Edition CFS? Fans of the Linley Helix motif (from the Linley Helix Furniture Collection) will be excited to hear that it will no longer be restricted to home use.

Thanks to the marvels of marquetry, this “iconic” pattern of four types of veneer will be set into the waist-rails and picnic table of the the Bentley Limited Edition CFS. Apparently, it makes a nice contrast with all that rosewood.

That’s not all, folks! Buyers will also revel in:

There’s just a week to go before the start of EcoVelocity 2011, an event modestly billed on its own website as “not your usual motor show”. If you head to London’s Battersea Power Station next week, it probably won’t be a new Porsche firing your imagination but the Hyundai ix35 FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle).

This will be the UK debut of a car that represents Hyundai’s third generation of FCEV. Passenger rides in the Hyundai ix35 FCEV will be on offer. So if you’ve got a Twitter account and a yearning to experience “future travel”, a ride in this hydrogen-powered car might be a good way to attract more followers.

Hyundai claims that this futuristic vehicle offers the same convenience as traditional internal combustion engines. If range anxiety keeps you awake at night, you’ll want to know that the Hyundai ix35 FCEV has a driving range of 360 miles (580km, if you prefer). It offers a maximum speed of 100mph and the zero-to-62mph time is 12.8 seconds.

The fuel cell stack of the ix35 FCEV is capable of operating at temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius. More important, owners can cruise around secure in the knowledge that the only emissions they’ll be inflicting on the environment are water vapour.

But where does the Hyundai ix35 FCEV go after you’ve enjoyed a few laps of the track in SW11? Well, it’s all part of the company’s move towards the commercialisation of FCEV. Earlier in 2011 it signed a memorandum of understanding to run test fleets of FCEVs. Already there have been test drives in Korea and Copenhagen.

According to Tony Whitehorn of Hyundai UK: “The ultimate goal would be to see zero-emission vehicles on UK roads within the next few years; however, the market and local infrastructure will be the real determinant of this.”

Reading between the lines, it sounds as though zero-emission is still a long way away from being a reality. But if you want a green-themed and fun day out with the kids, a low-carbon motor festival in Battersea is just around the corner.

A new “car of future” seems to arrive almost every week, but the Ford Evos Concept might just be a little different. This four-door, four-seat fastback will make its global debut at Frankfurt, but it’s not just the eye-catching looks that will have everyone talking.

Encouraged by the success of the kinetic design approach used in the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta, the company is taking the concept upmarket — starting (appropriately) with the Ford Evos Concept. It’s a continuation of the One Ford product strategy that is transforming the brand.

Here at Auto eBid we enjoy translating what manufacturers say about their cars into plain English that our customers can understand. We do love seeing the word “global”, but we don’t want you to lose sight of the important stuff amongst all the meaningless verbiage.

So news that the Ford Evos Concept isn’t just a car but an excuse for a “new exterior and interior design vocabulary” is a bit worrying. Here are a few key points that you might want to brush up on:

• Silhouette innovation. This sounds like a weight-watching plan, but is an indicator of Ford’s highly distinctive profile. In the case of the Ford Evos Concept, what you’re seeing is “sportiness” and “fun to drive”.
• Perceived efficiency. This deceptively dull phrase is a reference to the Concept’s fastback roof profile (it’s aerodynamic!) and the teardrop shape of the car’s lines towards the rear. Character-wise, this car is said to be light on its feet. (Back to the slimming vocabulary again.)
• Technical graphics. OK, this can’t be too confusing, can it? Apparently the Ford Evos Concept is flying the flag for smart technology with its low-profile headlights and tail lamps and an integrated rear exhaust.
• New face of Ford. They really do mean a new face here: the inverted trapezoid grille has been shifted upwards.

Away from all the talk about global design DNA, the Ford Evos Concept also features a state-of-the-art lithium-ion plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. This will offer the same next-generation performance and fuel economy as the Ford C-MAX Energi, which will arrive in North America in 2012 and Europe in 2013.

For some the first week of September means a new school term, a return to the office grind, or just the official end of summer. For others it’s all about the excitement of a new set of wheels. Yes, 1 September 2011 is the magical date that signals the launch of the ’61 plate. MG Motor UK thinks it’s come up with another reason to make you invest in a new MG6.

August is traditionally the “Silly Season”, and Volkswagen has been getting into the spirit by announcing details of its new range of small cars. The new VW up! (the exclamation point is important) will make its debut at Frankfurt next month, ahead of its European launch in December.

Go on, admit it, that name almost made you spill coffee over the keyboard. That’s just the start, though. There are three versions of this compact four-seater, which has a footprint of just 3.54 x 1.64 metres but a surprisingly large 251 litre boot. The cheapest version is called (wait for it) the VW take-up!, followed by the VW move up! and (if your budget allows) there’s the pricier VW high up!

The launch will include two versions of the VW high up! — the up! black and the up! white. Exclamation marks are known as “screamers” in the newspaper world, and VW’s overenthusiastic use of them is already driving me to distraction. So let’s talk about the vehicle hiding beneath this headline-grabbing name.

The new VW up! will feature a new generation of three-cyclinder petrol engines, with outputs of 60 PS and 75 PS. Combined fuel consumption as a BlueMotion Technology version is 4.2 l/100 km (60 PS) — this includes a Stop/Start system. This version also boasts CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km. If you’re already wondering about a version with electric drive, it’s in the pipeline. Perhaps they should have a competition to come up with a suitable name . . .

Recent surveys about drivers texting on the move and ignoring red lights emphasise that preventing accidents is more important than ever. So the new VW up! features the optional City Emergency Braking system, which can detect impending collisions at speeds of under 18 mph.

Apart from that capacious boot, the new VW up! offers up to 951 litres of cargo space with the rear seat fully folded. That leaves plenty of room for your PID, which as I’m sure you’re aware stands for Personal Infotainment Device.

This is the first time VW has offered a maps + more system, and it snaps into place above the centre console to cater for all your navigation, communication and entertainment needs. I guess you could say it cheers you up!

As part of the company’s centenary celebration of  manufacturing vehicles in Britain, Ford’s 100 Years in Photos has been offering a glimpse into a fascinating archive.

You won’t spot anyone social networking in these pictures, but I’m not sure the road safety experts would approve.

This ice sculpture from 2006 might have looked cool, but it weighed considerably more than a ton (more like six and a half) and obviously wasn’t fitted with Ford’s Active City Stop.

This manoeuvre demands 100 per cent of your attention, so it’s probably best to upate your Facebook status once you’re back on terra firma.

Proving that Ford’s 100 Years in Photos isn’t just a tale (or even tail) of glamour, innovation and human endeavour. Back in 1953 eating on the hoof was mainly confined to the cow population.

As you pack up your car this weekend it’s not just the prospect of more soggy summer weather that should be worrying you. The latest Ford safety research puts the spotlight on some of the dodgy driving practices that are afflicting Britain’s roads. It makes for a sobering reading.

Fifteen years ago, reckless texting (I’d call it “rexting” but apparently that means something else) wouldn’t have been among the Seven Deadly Sins of Motoring. According to the Ford safety research it is now the most dangerously distracting thing you can do at the wheel.

The survey reveals that 10 per cent of British drivers text while they’re on the move and in the 17-24 age group the figure jumps to 20 per cent. The problem isn’t just confined to compulsively replying to messages, when you should have your eyes on the road ahead. Checking Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites while driving also counts as extremely hazardous. That tweet could turn out to be your epitaph!

The Ford safety research also reveals:

• A staggering 60 per cent of drivers admit to being knob twiddlers (changing the station or CD on their car stereo).
• Driving with one hand is practised by 40 per cent of motorists.
• An (un)healthy 30 per cent have been known to eat and drink at the wheel. (Not  recommended by doctors or road safety experts.)

Of course there would be no fun in a survey that didn’t strike another blow in the ongoing  battle of the sexes. Not surprisingly, almost half of the women polled thought they were safer behind the wheel. Only one in five men agreed with that view. (No doubt the other 80 per cent answered that question very politely!)

Rounding off the bad news, about 67 per cent of those questioned didn’t rate their chances of passing the driving test easily if they had to take it again today.

Fortunately, technology is also helping to counteract the negative effects of all that texting, chatting and CD-changing. Ford’s Active City Stop operates in slow-moving traffic to apply the brakes if the car in front has stopped. Available on the all-new Ford Focus, this feature will counteract a slow or distracted driver — provided the speed is less than 20 mph.

Be careful out there!

Other manufacturers will be green with envy when they hear about Kia’s latest success. Well, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but the Korean manufacturer did get a big pat on the back for the eco credentials of the new Kia Picanto, Rio and Optima.

The technical inspection body TÜV Nord rated these models highly both for low tailpipe emissions and the overall greenness of the manufacturing process. As a result they’ve been granted ISO 14040 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) status. The Kia Sportage received similar accreditation in 2010.

So what does it all mean for consumers and for the environment? One key factor is that the new Kia Picanto, Rio and Optima all offer competitive running costs. The Rio B-segment hatchback does best of this bunch. It boasts the lowest CO2 output — an impressive 85 g/km — of any internal combustion engine car currently on sale in Europe. That’s even better than the Hybrids.

An LCA inspection rates the environmental impact of the vehicle throughout its lifetime. Choice of materials, exhaust emissions and recycling are all put under the microscope. (I wonder how ostrich leather and lizard skin would score in an LCA assessment?)

But this isn’t just about new Kia Picanto, Rio and Optima being good for motorists. In the bigger picture, Kia is also being rated highly for the way it produces the cars. The company’s plant in Zilina, Slovakia has already been certified as “environmentally friendly” in 2008. As Kia’s Benny Oeyen puts it, this recognition is also for “the quality and efficiency of [the cars'] production methods, for achieving the highest levels of safety and for their striking design”.

If you can’t wait to drive one of these lean, green, LCA-rated vehicles, the new Kia Picanto has been available in the UK since June. The Rio will go on sale from 1 September, and if you want the new D-segment Optima saloon it will be coming to a showroom near you later in the year.

Though “RV uplift” sounds like the kind of boost routinely offered by lingerie manufacturers, it’s a major incentive for car buyers in these cash-strapped times. The new Mazda6 Business Line is being billed as fun to drive, stylish and good news for your pocket because it’s been designed with an eye on resale.

Mazda has deliberately gone for high specs on this 2.2-litre diesel five-door hatchback, which is specifically targeted at fleets. So, you’ll get 17-inch alloy wheels, Sanyo TomTom® satellite navigation and (of course) Bluetooth. While you might be excited about these features, their inclusion is really more about enhancing the vehicle’s appeal to the next owner down the line — so don’t get too attached.

Other features to look out for include:

The green credentials of the new Mazda6 Business Line are important, too. It emits 138g/km of CO2, placing it in the 20 percent benefit-in-kind tax bracket for the current tax year.

If colour matters to you, the three options are Black Mica, Sunlight Silver Metallic and Stormy Blue Mica. This is based on what most company car drivers choose — something that may not please those who like to make more of a splash when they’re out on the road.

Here’s the real bonus, though: CAP estimates that the new Mazda6 Business Line will trounce its direct competitors by retaining an impressive 34 per cent of its P11D value (£18,130). According to Monitor-Cars editor Jeff Knight, this gives the vehicle “kerb appeal in the future used car market”.

This is the first time that Mazda has developed a model targeted at company car drivers. It is hoping to sell 500 models before the end of 2011, with estimated annual sales of 1,000 units.

The countdown to Frankfurt 2011 continues with a couple of new additions to the Chevrolet stable. GM’s largest global brand is celebrating its centenary this year and what better way to do it than with the new Chevrolet Miray and the Colorado Rally Concept.

At first sight those names don’t trip off the tongue in quite the same way as the Corvette or the Camaro. But let’s give Chevrolet the benefit of the doubt here: it did grow its European market share to 2.5 per cent last year, shifting an impressive 477,194 vehicles in the process. It’s not all about pickup trucks!

The New Chevrolet Miray Roadster Concept

First seen at the Seoul Motor Show earlier this year, the new Chevrolet Miray apparently takes its name from the Korean word for future. Chevrolet Europe’s Wayne Brannon says the car “demonstrates the potential for rescaling and extending today’s propulsion technologies”.

What you’ll probably want to know is that it boasts a couple of front-mounted, battery-powered 15-kW electric motors. Thanks to the Miray’s dual-clutch transmission, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-charged engine is smaller than you might expect.

Outside there’s a nod to the much-loved Corvette with the front and rear fenders and the wraparound twin cockpit. Does the “unique diamond shape” of the cabin make it a girl’s best friend? I don’t know, but I like the sound of the Miray’s luxury interior — all brushed aluminium, leather and white fabric. (Just don’t eat chocolate in it.)

Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept

The Colorado is a more rugged, midsize pickup — designed for the rally raid category. Powered by a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, the Colorado certainly looks the business. The 18-inch wheels are aluminium, fitted with mud terrain tyres, and the suspension system is height-adjustable (up to 50 mm).

If you are planning to take the new Colorado a bit further than the local supermarket, these “interior highlights” might be of interest:

More exciting is the “air boost” system that quickly cleans the cabin after you’ve driven through a dust cloud during an off-road chase. Phew!

We all know that Barcelona is home to an all-conquering football team, but it looks as though they’ve got some strong competition now. (No, it’s not Manchester United.) The Spanish brand SEAT, which is based just outside the Catalan capital, has raced to the top of the chart in the influential Car Dealer Power survey 2011.

You’d be forgiven for feeling a bit sceptical about yet another survey, but this one isn’t just marketing hype. More than a thousand UK dealers took the opportunity to rate the brand on everything from finance offers to that highly elusive quality “brand awareness”.

SEAT’s score of 90 per cent in the latest poll, boosted its position by a massive 18 places on 2010. It was also crowned Most Improved Maker. Beat that, Pep Guardiola!

Eight ratings of “excellent” in the Car Dealer Power survey 2011 was very good news for SEAT UK’s managing director Peter Wyhinny. But the feel-good factor around the company at the moment is also down to a trend-defying performance in this difficult market for new vehicles.

Around 130 sales and service dealers up and down the UK contributed to making it a very hot July for SEAT. The manufacturer recorded its best ever market share for a single month, with 2.07 per cent. Sales stand at 21,228 for the year to date and — here’s the really significant statistic — SEAT’s sales are up 6.7 per cent in a flagging market that is down 6.7 per cent overall. Scorchio!

So what does this all mean for dealers and customers in the UK? James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer, is in no doubt that SEAT’s success is the result of actually fixing its problems, rather than just ignoring them. In the bad old days of 2010 the company was marked down for criteria like stock levels, bonuses and return on investment. Now they’re rated “excellent” or “faultless”.

The American release of Pagani’s one million Euro Huayra hypercar has been stalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ruling it as unsafe.

The Pagani Huayra applied for exemption on the requirement for advanced airbags on the basis that it would apparently ‘substantial economic hardship’. Somehow that is hard to believe if they are developing cars for the super rich; it draws up images of chief executives sitting outside the Pagani offices with cap in hand begging for change to ‘develop advanced airbags’.

The launch is now postponed until 2013 in the US, a market they were hoping to start to expand in.
It is quite baffling that a car manufacturer such as Pagani who produce a car that has a bi-turbo 6.0-litre V12, producing 700bhp and 664lb ft of torque such as the Pagani Huayra, feel it is ok to try and wave a critical safety feature, the car can rip your face off when its moving let alone if it has an accident.

KTM has revealed a two seat electric three wheeler KTM E3W. It is being set up to rival the Renault Twizy, Renault’s speedy electric car.

The KTM E3W has been designed with help from the Austrian Institute of Technology, so we assume there will be several modern gadgets and energy saving devices on it. It is powered by a 15kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, which gives a range of 60 miles.

But it is still part of this electric craze, as previously discussed on our blog ultimately electric will be redundant as soon as Hydrogen cells are mastered, and as per normal the range of an electric car is frankly poor, you’d get further on a fully charged electric toothbrush.

They have tried to add some flares; the doors are scissor design to help with access in built up areas, and also to keep the weight low it is a pure plastic body. This also helps keep cost down at £4,400 – £6,800. Renault’s Twizy (above) is in principle a good concept, and we are sure that KTM E3Wwill bring something to the table, but save your money, buy other electrical appliances you need more and wait for Hydrogen to take over the world.

Let’s all please take a minute and just have a moments silence for the new Shelby Tuatara. What you are looking at is potentially the fastest road car on the planet, ripping the title away from Bugatti.

At first read the name Tuatara may seem like an odd one, it is named after a lizard. But when you learn that the lizard in question actually has the fastest-evolving molecular structure in nature, it all fits into place.

Just one look at the lines and dynamic of the Shelby Tuatara and you can see the evolving design and the pure aggressive approach to streamlining and speed.

“Most manufacturers use the same basic model and body shape for up to 10 years,” says the company’s owner, Jerod Shelby. “But after only three years in production with the Ultimate Aero [Shelby’s previous supercar], the Tuatara is a monumental evolution.”

And now for the fun part; it has a 7-litre V8 twin turbo engine. It produces, and wait for it, a mind blowing 1,331bhp. This phenomenal piece of engineering will apparently be on the roads by the end of the year. Although let’s hope that other cars don’t go down the abstract reptile naming route or we may see a super car called Gecko.

More Frankfurt Motor Show news, this time from the Subaru camp, Subaru will show its new Qashqai rival, the XV,

‘The XV is a rival for the Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai,’ Subaru’s then UK managing director Paul Tunnicliffe said in May. ‘It’s four-wheel drive only and we’ll offer a 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrols and a 2.0-litre diesel. We are hoping for around 2000 XV sales in a full year.’

This is Subaru’s attempt to bolster sales in the UK which have fallen to around 4000 sales a year across all models. Not really sure as of yet whether the XV will stand up to its rivals such as the Kuga and Qashqai as stated by Mr Tunicliffe, but it’s definitely one to keep an eye on, although that may be difficult as only sketches of the model have been released so far.

This year at the Frankfurt Motor show the world’s largest car manufacturer Ford, will be launching no less than FIVE new models.

Ford will have their biggest ever stand, which will include a mind boggling 2,800 metre squared track. The new focus seems to be their flagship model, unveiling not only an all new design concept but two hot new performance versions.

A spokesman for the company said that the concept was “seventy to eighty percent confirmed for production” but by showing it early “there’ll be an opportunity to take customer feedback on board before finalizing the design.”

There will also be the long awaited Fiesta ST model on display, which by all accounts should be hitting showrooms next year. It is set to feature a 1.6 litre EcoBoost emgine tuned for 200bhp.

We are sure to expect a mix of other global models that will be hitting showrooms next year. Always a good sign to see Old Blue looking ahead with confidence.

Its that time of year again where concept cars will start to unroll into our consciousness, directed by all the usual suspect car manufacturers.

And it seems not a moment too soon, as never has it been more important to escape into childhood dreams and fantasy. No matter if they ever hit production or not, the concept car allows us all to escape into a fantasy world of possibility.

Often made for no other reason that ‘they can’ be, there is a pureness about concept cars, a fun element behind them, often a crazy logic to design and power.

Lamborghini has confirmed it will unveil a ‘super-sports car’ at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it will be road going…there are not many manufacturers that can match the excitement of such words as ‘super’ and ‘road going’ but Lamborghini definitely can.

They have been a bit cryptic about the look and design, but certain hints have pointed towards a race inspired mix of the Gallardo & Superleggera. Yes you heard right, a race version of two of the most powerful road going cars on the market.

Not surprisingly it will be sold in very limited numbers, and those will have to be the super rich. But the most bonkers super car manufacturer of them all never disappoints with its style and sheer power, so we look forward to seeing one come past us in a blur.

Things go from bad to worse for SAAB, they have now been forced to sell a large chunk of shares in order to raise the necessary cash to pay its workers.

The amount sold is yet to be finalised, but it must be dark times for the Swedish manufacturer. There is only one thing worst than an unhappy engineer, and that’s an unpaid, unhappy engineer.
However some people claim that the sale would not be sufficient to restart production at the company’s plant in Trollhattan. Which means the local community will now have an influx of unemployed.

Perhaps we should start a new campaign to re-allocate car manufacturer’s assembly plants for other uses. We can have really efficient super market assembly lines, a team of engineers lining up to pack your shopping, place it on a conveyer belt out to your car boot? Or maybe we can employ them for plastic surgeries, that way you can get all in one solutions along one assembly line, you start off a haggard, paunchy person, by the time you come out the factory you have a white smile, a forehead that no longer moves and lips that can cushion a falling plane.

Or perhaps SAAB just need to get back to the kind of advertising they used to use, if they still had the advert above, I for one would buy their cars.

The insurance firm Admiral has polled 2500 British motorists and discovered that more than 90 per cent of them believe they are being ripped off by the current cost of fuel, with more than half blaming the government for this. Others blamed oil companies, petrol retailers and world affairs for high prices at forecourts.

This is no great shock, in a garage forecourt the other day a man was witnessed ironically having to sell his car to the attendant just to be able to afford the petrol for it. And the woman in th above video was so weak from not eating for a month just to be able to fill up her car the petrol hose was too much for her.

Other findings in the survey include the fact that only one in three motorists are concerned about the damage their car does to the environment.

On the current state of British roads, one in five people said they had had their car damaged as a result of hitting a pothole. More than 20 per cent of people would be willing to pay extra tax if they knew the money would be spent improving the roads. Sure people say that now, but due to current economic conditions most people have a tighter grip on their money than Sarah Palin does on a gun.

When asked about what rules they have recently ignored, 58 per cent of motorists – and almost two thirds of men – claim to ignore speed limits. A total of five per cent of people have admitted to not wearing seat belts and seven per cent to using their mobile phones.

Only half of British Motorists passed their driving test at the first attempt and, when asked if they would pass their test if they had to re-sit it today, only 60 per cent felt confident that they would, filling us all with that sense of excitement every time we get on the roads, ‘will we make it?’. Almost half of motorists also believe that the age for legal driving should be increased from 17 to 18….although judging from the video above not sure what difference a year will make?

Ford has announced plans to release a new entry level £13,995 Focus.

Over the last ten years the Ford Focus has been Britain’s biggest selling car and Ford obviously wants to hold onto their sales through tough times.

It will be called the Ford Focus Studio and as standard will come with 16-inch sports-style alloy wheels, body-coloured rear spoiler, radio/CD player with USB connectivity, air-conditioning, electrically-operated body-coloured mirrors with integrated indicators, electrically operated front windows, cap-less refueling and ESP.

There is nothing new here, but the Focus has always been a sharp, reliable hatchback and for that price there will be no shortage of buyers.

BMW has given the first look at its new i3. A purely electric car the i3 relies on a pure electric driveline and is currently undergoing durability testing in a fleet of 1-series Active-E prototypes.

From its looks it is obvious that they are aiming it squarely at the ‘city-drive’ market, and to further back this up they have stated that the BMW i3 has a “comparatively small turning circle” and that it is “agile at typical city speeds”.

Even with this city function in mind BMW claim the i3 will have an overall range of between 80-100miles.

Smart Car is cowering behind a sofa, as stylistically the BMW i3 does look like its older brother on steroids. Although it will be exciting to see the several technological flairs to the interior and computer systems that BMW love so much, perhaps a Sat Nav that can talk to you about the sites as you drive past the inner city crowds?

John Pennington is an American designer that has taken travelling around a Golf course to new levels. The F5 Golf Cart is based on the classic Ferrari Enzo. It whisks you around the course at 32kph and lasts for three rounds.

The golf buggy replica of a Ferrari will set you back almost £20,000 but is guaranteed to make you stand out on the course.

They include alloy wheels, a hard top and leather seats. There is a range of different ones including an American Hot Rod and Rolls Royce versions also.

‘No one really needs an Italian sports car but life is sure better when you have one,’ said Pennington,

I’m not sure how many people would walk past someone driving in these carts and go ‘wow, that’s a great Ferrari you’ve got yourself there’. Dimension wise it looks like a Ferrari for a Hobbit and essentially you are still just a golfer in bad trousers playing cars with his buggy.

But they do bring a smile to the face, however at those prices they also bring a big dent to the bank balance, not sure who would be crazy enough to buy one…oh wait, Golfers.

Honda has been named the most reliable car maker in the UK by warranty experts Warranty Direct.
The Japanese manufacturer topped the list of reliability having only a 9 per cent chance of a fault over 12 months, which is a long way clear of second place Toyota which has a 15 per cent chance of a failure in a 12 month period.

The study, which was conducted on cars aged between three and eight years old over a 12 month period, was designed to assess both reliability and average cost of repair.

Japanese cars dominated the most reliable list with all the usual suspects present, Suzuki, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Mazda and Subaru all in the top ten. Sitting rock bottom of the most reliable was, quite surprisingly, Land Rover with a staggering 55 percent chance of going wrong over the 12 month period. Worth making a note of, if ever you want a rugged terrain vehicle to see you through off road adventures…buy a Honda.

European cars did actually fare much better in cost of repair with Fiat & Renault being the cheapest, but to balance it out Porsche came out as the most expensive to fix with an average wallet busting repair price of £689.99.

So if you buy a European brand you may only get a short run out of it…but at least you’ll smile as you leave the Garage every three days.

Finally the low rate of female employment in British engineering is being backed by major players within the industry.

According to Jose Lopes, Jaguar Land Rover’s boss of technical excellence claims its ‘a disgrace’ when the employment numbers of woman in engineering are examined. “I think it’s a disgrace only eight per cent of the workforce in engineering are women,” he said. “In Germany it’s around 16 per cent.”

A new programme being run by Semta (sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies) actively aims to secure more female jobs within the sector and has now begun working with JLR to develop a stronger female presence.

The Autocar-Courland Next Generation Award – a national competition to identify, support and develop top automotive talent of the future – has received a five per cent female application figure, which is already an increase on 2010.

October 2011 is the touchdown date here in GB for the Maserati GranCabrio Sport. There is no way of looking at this car without being left speechless at its beauty; even squinting through a crack in a dirty window wouldn’t stop you noticing the stunning curves and lines.

Officially unveiled at the Geneva Motorshow earlier this year, the Pininfarina designed four seater convertible was received with great enthusiasm by clients and media alike.

It packs a 4.7-litre V8 producing 450bhp and 4750RPM, enough to spin the world a little faster on its axis. Something else which goes to show the level of detail that the Italian manufacturer has put into the Maserati GranCabrio Sport is its revised exhaust system which automatically opens its bypass valves in Sport mode to provide an even richer sound, so with the roof down you can listen to the symphony.

It is being priced at £102,615 on the road, even though we are in times of frugality it has to be said that for a car as sumptuous as this, that really isn’t that bad, you would pay a thousand times that for a Picasso or Van Gogh, but what Maserati have created here with the GranCabrio Sport is actually something far greater than just art, it has created art that has a practical purpose….a Da Vinci on wheels.

Honda has released the first image of the concept car that will turn into the new generation of its CR-V off roader.

Even though this is being shown as a concept, Honda traditionally release very similar models into mass production, occasionally with a few minor tweaks.

It is displaying a more rounded rear end with a more menacing front grille and overall looks a far sleeker design than previous CR-V models. Under the bonnet Honda are claiming a more efficient range of engines that are aiming to give far better fuel economy.

If you like the look unfortunately you will have to wait until next year before it hits any European shores, with the Geneva Motor Show being more than likely the first stop for the CR-V.

A lot of people would argue that Fiat don’t need a new generation Panda, over the years we have seen several, with all the eco-talk about Panda’s being an endangered species perhaps their motoring namesake should just bow out gracefully…but the cheeky toddler of the car world is always so much fun.

Fiat’s latest-generation Panda, set for a Frankfurt show launch in September, will grow in size to make space in the range for a smaller Topolino city car, due in 2014. (smaller than a Panda? Must be like a Borrowers’ version).

A 105bhp version of this engine is also being considered for a range-topping Abarth model, and that is not too shabby at all, it’s just whether the sometimes ‘cheap’ interior can hold together on top speeds.

All signs indicate that the new generation Panda is going to be its usual fun, economical and occasionally baffling self. Production starts in November

Red Bull Racing want to continue their expansion in the motor industry by capitalising on it’s recent tie up with Infiniti and start producing road cars.

The Red Bull boss Christian Horner said: “Red Bull used to be known only as an energy drink company, but now it is recognised as an engineering team. It’s a natural evolution for us to get involved in road car engineering.”

It’s not the first team to try and tie in with the mass market, Williams co-designed a Renault Clio Williams hot hatch in the 90’s. But Red Bull will more than likely push to develop something a lot sportier, and with Infiniti talking about expanding its model range into the electric car arena, Red Bull could lend it’s racing expertise to possibly design a rival to the Tesla Roadster.

With Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber sitting one and two in Formula One’s World Championship it’s guaranteed to get a lot of publicity and attention, but will the end product give you wings? (oh come it had to be said)

Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton, he took victory yesterday at the German Grand Prix, which was his first victory since the Chinese Grand Prix earlier in the year.

Hamilton qualified second on the grid, sandwiched between both the Red Bull’s of Webber and Vettel, the only two drivers above him in the championship.

After a fantastic start the race turned into one of the best of the year, with Hamilton grabbing an early lead, from there on in there was a three way battle between Hamilton, Webber and Alonso. There were some fantastic overtaking moves and drama galore during the 60 lap race, eventually seeing Hamilton take the chequered flag.

More bad news for Hamilton’s team mate Button as his car hydraulics failed and he was forced to retire, also one of the most interesting sights was seeing championship leader Vettel struggle all weekend with his Red Bull car, never looking fully comfortable finally finishing fourth.

The result leaves Hamilton third in the championship on 134points, five behind Webber and a massive 82 behind leader Vettel.

This is the world’s first Jet Turbine powered Batmobile! That may not sound exciting but for any man who used to prefer comic books to girls, and primarily sit in a darkened room on a sunny day…this is a dream come true.

It is designed and developed by an American racing driver and Batman fanatic who goes by the name of Casey Putsch. He designed it and built it himself from anything he could get his hands on.

The car can reach speeds of 180mph and by far the best feature is the military spec turbine engine used in a drone helicopter by the Navy to drop torpedoes on enemy submarines, the sound giving it a comic book fantasy feel.

Mr Putsch has aspirations to be a top racing driver and reckons with backing he could see himself launching around an Indy 500 circuit, well given the sound and look I think most drivers would probably be concentrating so hard on being chased by Batman that there is every chance of winning. However not so sure any ladies will be too impressed if he showed up in it on a first date…

The RAC Foundation have stated this week that sales of new generation electric cars has got off to a less than exciting start, despite the government grant of £5,000 for choosing a low emission vehicle.

The main reason given for the low sales is price, even with the taxpayer subsidies the price of a brand new electric car will set you back in excess of £20,000. For times of recession and electric cars primarily focusing on families, this is just too much for people to stretch to for the sake of saving Polar Bears.

The manufacturers can claim as frequently and as loudly as they want that in the coming years improved technology will bring the prices down, because it is all irrelevant anyway…

There is only one type of car for the future, and that is the Hydrogen Cell vehicle (see video above). Although not mass produced to the same level as the electric vehicle, it is quite simply going to change the car industry forever, once the boffins have made it efficient it will produce only H2O out of the exhaust as a bi-product, ONLY WATER! And also it can be filled up on route by pouring in compressed hydrogen (the most abundant element in the universe) in liquid form, and you can carry on your journey just the same as you do with petrol.

So to save Paul the Polar Bear or dancing penguins’ electric cars will have to have a serious re-think if they want to jump start their sales.

On Friday 15th July Rolls-Royce celebrated the centenary of the Spirit of Ecstasy. To mark the event they rolled out one hundred Rolls-Royce motor cars covering models from 1911 to the present day at their home in Goodwood, West Sussex.

Over 500 hundred guests enjoyed seminars on the production of the Spirit of Ecstasy, a photographic exhibition inspired by the Spirit of Ecstasy, a walk around the manufacturing plant and Grand Picnic Lunch.

“The Spirit of Ecstasy is perhaps the most famous automotive icon, gracefully adorning the prow of Rolls-Royce models past and present,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive of Rolls‑Royce Motor Cars.

To finish up the day a cavalcade of all 100 cars paraded around Goodwood Motor Circuit, at the head of the line was a new Phantom Drophead Coupe.

This is a truly historic moment for not only Rolls-Royce but for the motoring industry as a whole. Here is to another 100 years.

Share and share alike, one of Britain’s most iconic car manufacturers Caterham has made the decision to start selling its models in China.

Caterham announced this week that they have signed a deal with a new importer which will see them offer customers all of its current EU5-compliant cars, including the Caterham Seven, to the world’s largest car market.

Caterham Cars’ International Business Manager, David Ridley, said: “We are engaged in one of the most exciting new chapters in the Caterham Cars story and our entry into the Chinese market is another tangible sign of how Caterham is striving to become a truly global brand.”

The Caterham is known for its lightweight body, speed and precision handling. The video above may be a home video of the Caterham heading round a circuit, but the level of joy the sound of the engine gives is something that needs to be heard raw.

If we are to believe the statistics about the vast amount of new car buyers in China, the sound of the Caterham’s engine may well be a sound that we here in the West will hear humming in the background for a long time to come…and who could ask for a better sound.

Ferrari has refused permission for the one off Lancia Stratos that was created for wealthy businessman Michael Sloschek to go into wider production.
Responsible for one of the greatest rally car legacies of all time the Lancia Stratos won the world rally championship three times.

They only ever made five hundred Stratos to buy, and we think you’ll agree from the video above that not only did they look stunning, but they drove beautifully also.

Car enthusiasts around the world were crossing their fingers awaiting Ferrari’s decision, permission would have been required as the modern interpretation of the Stratos was based on a Ferrari F430’s underpinnings and the bodywork was made by the world famous Pininfarina, however without the consent of Ferrari a wider production of the version above wont be happening.

However do not cry into your motor oil just yet, the company have released a statement claiming they are on the lookout for another company to possibly help with the creation of a modern Stratos, saying ‘Given this situation, creation of additional vehicles seems possible only via companies that are not dependent on Ferrari. For all you Mercedes fans out there, here is the moment you have all been waiting for. The unveiling of the soft-top version of the Mercedes SLS AMG supercar!

With top speeds of 197mph and the ability to go from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds; the Mercedes SLS AMG roadster is sure not to disappoint; planning to make its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.

The new Mercedes does not differ greatly from the original coupe, powered by the same 563bhp 6.3-litre V8 engine and with a boot capacity of 173-litres (only 3 short of the coupe).

The fabric roof comes in black, beige or red and is made up of lightweight steel, magnesium and aluminium. It can be controlled by the slick switch on the central armrest and going at speeds of around 31mph, can be opened or closed in a mere 11 seconds.

When it hits UK dealers in November this year, it is set to come in at around £170,000 and comes complete with heated AMG sports seats, sat-nav, black ‘designo’ leather and climate control.

Better start saving the pennies!

Just because you don’t have 15 million Yuan lying around in your pocket, it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to have your dream car; or at least that’s what Ha San thought once he had set his mind on the new Aventador Lamborghini .

The Chinese hair salon owner worked for a solid 12 days constructing this beautiful work of art, using a 1995 A31 Nissan Cefiro as the basic framework.

Ha San cleverly calls this beauty the ‘Avenfiro,’ a mixture of the Lamborghini Aventador and the Nissan Cefiro.

This low-budget car only cost the man a total of 90 Yuan, which when you convert into sterling works out at about £8!

Not bad for a new state of the art Lamborghini.

NASCAR racer Kyle Busch is used to driving at ridiculously high speeds, and admittedly he is very good at what he does. But surely his racing skills should belong to the race track with other experienced drivers, rather than endangering Britain’s average driver.

Kyle Busch was test driving his new sports car earlier this week and accidently “got carried away.” He was caught speeding in a new bright yellow Lexus LFA, going 128mph in a 45mph zone, nearly three times over the limit!

The silly racer has apologised to his beloved fans:

“Today I received a traffic citation in Iredell County, I was test driving a new sports car and I got carried away. I went beyond the speed I should have been going on a public road. I apologise to the public, my fans, sponsors, and race teams for my lack of judgment.

I take responsibility for my actions and I can assure you that something like this will never happen again. I thank the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department and all law enforcement for the hard work they do every day to protect the public and to enforce the laws in a fair and equitable manner.”

No matter how good a driver you are or you think you are going 128mph in a 45mph zone is not acceptable, even if you are Kyle Busch.

It is every gaming fanatics dream come true, and the future that Autoglass predicts for the car industry. Autoglass envisage that by the year 2020 we will all be driving around town with windscreens that look a bit like the one in the video link.

An Autoglass spokesperson said: “The dashboard as we know it will become obsolete and the windscreen will act as a visual information board.”

If you’re caught using one mobile phone behind the wheel it is bad enough; you could face a roadside fine of £60 as well as 3 points on your licence.

However this particular driver has been arrested after not only using one mobile phone, but two! How is that even possible? We are surprised he managed to concentrate on staying on the road at all.

The un-named Norfolk motorist was seen heading down a 70mph stretch of the A47 at Blofield, near Norwich at around 10.40am last week.

A police man noticed that the driver had one phone held to his ear while texting on the other one, leaving neither hand free to actually steer the car. Although apparently the driver solved this dilemma by steering with his knees!

Not only was the driver using two phones at the same time; facing fines of up to £1,000 if the case is taken to court; but he was also driving around in an uninsured car which has since been taken off him.

“Using one mobile phone is silly, but two mobile phones is amazingly silly,” said a spokesperson for Norfolk Constabulary.

It is not uncommon for teenagers to be associated with drink driving; we see it happening more and more every day. However the latest boy to get himself arrested for the juvenile car crime was no teenager, in-fact he has yet to make it to his 10th birthday!

The 9 year-old from Cumbria, who has not been named as he is a minor, was breathalysed and immediately taken into police custody. Although the youngster was sent away scot-free, as on discovery of his age, the police had no other choice but to release him without charge as he was too young to be held accountable for his actions.

The young boy is just one of thousands of under 18’s to be arrested in the North of England over the last 2 years. 2,467 juveniles have been arrested for car crimes such as, drink-driving, underage driving, car theft, and aggravated vehicle taking.

Safety campaigners have demanded action to be taken to control juvenile car crimes. Something has to be done as they are not only endangering themselves, but other car drivers all around them.

By now I am sure that you have all heard of the Twizy, an inquisitive mix of city car and scooter that seats no more than two people. Renault has now announced that the Twizy will be available for purchase as of next year, and will cost you just £6,690!

Revealed at the Paris Motor Show last October, the Twizy is powered by a 17hp electric motor with a range of 62 miles and fully recharges in three and a half hours.

It measures at just 2.32-metres long, 1.19-metres wide and 1.46-metres tall. Even though it is not quite big enough for a boot, it comes with a 31-litre lockable cubby-hole perfect for keeping your briefcase: the urban commuters dream.

On top of the initial £6,690 Renault is charging £40 a month to lease the battery on a 3 year agreement. In the future there may be an option to buy the whole unit. As of now the £40 a month may seem a little steep, however it is a sort of insurance policy as Renault will replace the battery if anything goes wrong or if you feel it is starting to lose power.

If you live anywhere near a city, expect to see a lot of these wacky quadricycles hitting the streets next year!

When Janice Maffucci received a suspicious phone call from California police, she automatically hung up. The ‘police’ had told her that they had found her car; 36 years after she had reported it missing; she was positive that it had to be a joke.

Ms Maffucci’s 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Muscle car, had been stolen outside the post office where her father worked in New Jersey, USA in July 1975. After reporting it stolen, she had given up hope of ever finding it as the years went by.

Eagle-eyed classic car enthusiast, Keith Williams, had bought the Chevrolet Camaro Muscle from eBay. Discovering that certain things weren’t as they should be, for example, the Camaro’s original six-cylinder engine had been swapped for a far more powerful V8. Mr Williams came to the conclusion that the Chevrolet was a fake and contacted the police.

The car was then further investigated and tracked back to a 1975 stolen vehicle report, where Ms Maffucci was the registered owner at the time of the theft.

Ms Maffucci had hung up to the police when they had called her. Soon after the police visited her house to tell her in person, and she had to believe them; arranging to have the car delivered to her address.

Fortunately Mr Williams was able to recover his money through eBay’s buyer insurance, and Janice Maffucci has finally been reunited with a car that is now worth far more than what she paid for it. The original thief is yet to be found, but police continue to investigate.

Green-energy has found a way to turn your waste lunch into diesel! They have revealed that oil can now be extracted from un-saleable fatty foods like crisps and pies that can be turned into bio-diesel to run cars; in-fact this new bio-diesel could already be powering your car.

A bio-diesel production facility in Immingham; costing around £50,000,000; has been set up to convert the waste food into energy.

The overcooked, past their sell-by-date and misshapen products can contain between 25-30% fat and oil, which is extracted by the facilities partner Brocklesby before being purified by Green-energy. The oil is then mixed with regular fuel and supplied to petrol stations.

Chief executive of Green-energy, Andrew Owens said: “The quantities of biodiesel that we’re currently producing from solid food waste are small, but we’re expecting to scale up so that this soon becomes a significant proportion of our biodiesel.”

“It’s great to be taking these products, which would otherwise have gone to landfill or compost, and turning them into a new source of fuel,” he says.

So next time you fill up your tank, imagine all the places it has travelled from!

A group of friends set off to a particular road in Hastings just last week in an attempt to break the speed limit on a 30mph road. You may think that there is nothing of the unordinary about that; however the 28-year-old was attempting this on his inline skates!

Sam Tuffnell was the young man wearing the skates in the video, and despite the fact he had broken his coccyx just four days prior to the stunt, he achieved what he had set out to do and managed to get the first recorded speed camera hit for a skater.

If you watch the video you can see the four attempts that it took Tufnell to set the camera off. He was wearing no protective clothing or equipment and had only put on a reflective vest for the purpose of the camera.

Since the stunt, Sam Tufnell has had a lot of mixed reactions as well as being condemned for his lack of safety awareness. Neil Hopkins of the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership said: “This stunt is nothing short of extremely foolish. It is almost inconceivable that anyone would attempt such a dangerous stunt at night, dressed mostly in black, on a road that’s in use.”

Going on to say, “This sort of activity should always take place off the road under supervised conditions and with protective clothes.”

Regardless of this, Tufnell is not sorry for his actions: “Everyone loves the video. They think it’s brilliant. Some people think it’s quite mad.”
