Within our AutoHabits team, we're entering into the "driving phase" of life as well. Some of our own children are reaching that driving age, and the mission of AutoHabits becomes even more personal. We love our children, but know that there are new learnings and opportunities to explore (and push) boundaries. We're grateful that today's technology provides for systems like our AutoHabits so we can "be there without being there". Gives us some real peace-of-mind.

Enjoy the holidays, and please be safe!

An AutoHabits Device connects directly to the car's computer through the OBDII (On Board Diagnostic) port of the vehicle. This is typically below the steering wheel, down by the pedals. This OBDII port is required for all cars manufactured since 1996, it makes it easy for mechanics and others to synch up the car's computers and diagnosis problems and receive data. The AutoHabits Device also includes a sophisticated GPS location chip, as well as the ability to send data through the airways like a cell phone.

With all that data, who's looking at it? Just you.

AutoHabits does not share data with any parties for marketing or other reasons. As parents ourselves, we strongly believe in the importance of creating a trusting relationship between yourself and your teenage driver. The AutoHabits System was created to provide real-time driving information for parents so they could reinforce postive driving behavior, or immediately address areas of concern for their teenage driver.

Please view AutoHabits Privacy Policies at: http://autohabits.com/policies#privacy

or contact us if you have any questions or issues about how data is protected and shared.

Safe Driving!
"I like to go fast!"

It's a thrill to be behind the wheel, we still like it as adults. Remember back when you were a new driver...and now that person is your teenage son or daughter.

"How fast is my teenager going"? is the number one question that parents ask, and what an AutoHabits system can answer. Because AutoHabits is real-time tracking with GPS accuracy, parents can know when excessive speeds are being pushed by their young driver. And, through the simple AutoHabits Dashboard summary report, the highest speed driven for that week is clearly noted so issues can be addressed. Through AutoHabits online or mobile phone access, parents can receive text alerts whenever speed thresholds are exceeded to know immediately if unsafe driving behavior is happening.

Why does everyone want to watch their speed? Because SPEED is a significant factor in teen crashes, up to 33% of the accidents reported in 2011 according to a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Parents can take steps to help teenage drivers be safe. By using an AutoHabits monitoring system, teenagers know their parents care (yes, some may not like it at first that's true...but honestly, those are the teenagers who most likely could benefit from a more careful watchful eye - don't you agree?).

Be Safe. Stay within the speed limits. And please get an AutoHabits system for your teenage driver now! It's that important.

That means road trip season. Are you escaping the heat? Going to the beach? Visiting friends? Or just plain ole getting away for a breather?

Behaviors change when you’re being watched….most often for the better. It’s natural to let poor habits get the better of you when you’re all alone. But when mom or dad is watching, it’s a different story.

Now you can be in the passenger seat….whenever the car is being driven! A discrete AutoHabits Device plugged into the car’s OBDII port (by the brake pedal) is an easy way for parent’s to keep that watchful eye at all times.

And by using AutoHabits text alerting capabilities, information is always in real-time.

Stay safe kids….we’re watching!

"One in 7 licensed drivers (age 16 to 24) admits to having nodded off behind the wheel at least once in the past year". It goes on to say that "drowsy driving is a factor in an estimated 1 in 6 fatal crashes in the USA".

Driving a car is a major responsibility that many just take for granted. Being responsible behind the wheel is important and a must.

Please be sure to remind your family members, friends, and those you are concerned about NOT to drive while under the influence...and NOT to drive when they are tired.

It matters. Please drive safe.

School is back in session! What an exciting time for students, especially new College Freshmen. Lots of new experiences and some first-time distance from the safety of the parental nest. Ahhh…freedom.

From the parent’s perspective, the peacefulness of a quiet house is still not outweighing the heightened anxiety and nervousness of wondering what troubles and dangers their child could encounter. Will they make good choices? Will they stay safe? While you know you have raised them to have a good head on their shoulders, you also know college is a whole new world.

What are some good ways to stay connected to your college student?

It can be a tricky balance to give your new Freshman the room to grow, but also keep a watchful eye. Plus, you miss them. You don’t want to smoother them, yet you would love to hear how it’s going.

Here are a few simple suggestions to stay within arms reach even though the distance is great:

1) FACEBOOK: Honestly, it’s how today’s generation is staying in touch with each other and it can be a great way for you to stay in-the-loop as well. Be a friend of your Freshman, and jump into the conversation…every once in awhile. Watch, but don’t over-post.

So, stay connected. Be safe. And find peace and rest in your new quiet home.

Today, motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for young people aged 16-20 years old. Thankfully, this rate is decreasing, but not quick enough. What can be done?

Educating our young drivers about the risks of unsafe behavior is important, and always needed. Encouraging safety belt usage and discouraging alcohol and cell-phone use while driving is important. And just good common sense training and coaching on how to develop your young driver’s skills to be an attentive and defensive driver is required. Then you hand them the keys, and you hope and trust they have listened and drive responsibly.

How else can we reduce risky driving behavior?

Monitor your driver. It’s as simple as that, and today’s technology provides you the tools to do it. GPS type devices, like AutoHabits, did not exist when parents of today’s teenagers were themselves the teenage drivers. Back in those days, did we all practice responsible driving habits? Did we ever push the boundaries? Of course we did…we were teenagers too. But would we have slowed down our speed, or not driven the car to places we were asked not to go if we knew our parents “were watching”?

Monitoring a teenage driver can greatly reduce risky driving behavior. It is not complicated, and it just makes sense. After all, what is most important to you? It is the safety of your child. That child now is a teenager, and it is natural for teenagers to push the boundaries and explore their new world. Driving gives them freedom, which is exciting! But for everyone’s sake, let’s all help our young drivers be safe!

Support National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 16-22, 2011

AutoHabits is proud to support National Teen Driver Safety Week by waiving Activation Fees for new users during the month of October (SAVE $50)!

Did you know that National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW) was actually established by Congress? It’s true. What started as a joint initiative by a Representative and Senator from Pennsylvania became a formal resolution of Congress in 2007, with the support of traffic safety experts at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm Insurance Companies. It is held annually, the third week of October.

Teenage drinking and driving gets a lot of attention, as well it should. But there are a number of other distractions and behaviors that teenagers need to be aware of as well.
When teenage drivers become involved in accidents and crashes, it is most often caused by their inexperience or driver error. Besides alcohol related driving issues, the following should also be top-of-mind for parents and teenage drivers:

· Driving while tired or fatigued

· Speeding

· Cell phone use while driving

· Driving with multiple teen passengers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the U.S.

Allstate, like many of the major auto-insurance carriers are now providing discounts ranging from 10% and some up to 30% when vehicles have “anti-theft” devices. Since the AutoHabits Device plugs directly into a car’s computer port, and has a real-time GPS chip, it often meets the requirements for these anti-theft insurance discounts.

Reporting that comes from GPS tracking devices typically focus on a car’s speed, or the location of the vehicle. According to the article, Mark Robert’s (dad) wants more. He states that his goal is about driver
behavior modification, and for his family to be more aware of how they drive.

AutoHabits is a driver behavior reporting system that would be just what a family like the Roberts could benefit from. It not only provides immediate car speed and location alerts, but one of the many unique benefits of AutoHabits is its capability to compare key driving behavior indicators to those of peer groups. With AutoHabits, parents have relevant benchmarks to help them reinforce responsible driving habits, or immediately address areas of concern.

But unfortunately...the article goes on share it's not all good news. Another reason attributing to the decline is that these stricter license requirements for 16 years olds, are often creating incentives for young drivers to just wait until they are 18 years old to get their license. So now they are a bit older and hopefully wiser, but in reality they have still not gained any experience behind the wheel.

The summary point, is really worth emphasizing again..."The results show there's a need for strategies for the novice driver at any age".

Being an active participant in your young driver's learning is HUGE. Helping them develop solid driving skills, and establishing appropriate boundaries to curb behavior that can become dangerous can keep your driver safe...as well as the rest of us sharing the road.
