On Flag Day, June 14, the National Park Service will hold several special events to commemorate the 234th anniversary of the adoption of the American flag.

Visit Independence Hall in Philadelphia and see where it all began. Stand in the room where the founding fathers passed the Flag Act of 1777 and established the Stars and Stripes as the new flag, and an infinite source of pride, for the fledgling nation.

America’s newest citizens will each receive an American flag during naturalization ceremonies taking place on Flag Day at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Maryland, the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in Missouri, and the Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri will hold a patriotic concert and Fort Stanwix National Monument in New York will host a family fun day complete with an evening ceremony retiring the colors.

The biggest celebration will take place at Fort McHenry, the birthplace of the National Anthem. In addition to the naturalization ceremony, there will be concerts by choirs and military bands, a parade of state flags, and a spectacular fireworks display.

Soaring above all the festivities will be the park’s “green” Star-Spangled Banner. The landmark 30-by-42-foot flag is now illuminated entirely by solar energy. Four LED lamps draw their power from a pair of low-profile solar panels. “By using solar power, we can harness the dawn’s early light that enabled Francis Scott Key to see the Star-Spangled Banner and use it to power the lights that allow us to view it at the twilight’s last gleaming,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “It is just one of the many ways that we are incorporating renewable energy and sustainable practices into park operations.”

The “greening” of Fort McHenry has also included converting most of its external lighting to solar power, installing high-efficiency HVAC units and storm windows, setting up a geothermal heat pump system, purchasing electric utility vehicles, and constructing a LEED-certified visitor education center.

“Sustainability is a National Park Service principle. The country’s 394 national parks are implementing ways to reduce energy consumption, offer transportation alternatives, recycle and conserve resources,” said Jarvis. “Parks like Fort McHenry and Zion, which increased the amount of renewable energy produced in the park by 850 percent last year, are leading the way.”

The National Park Service now has more than 40 LEED-certified buildings, including the Eielson Visitor Center in Denali National Park and Preserve and the Old Faithful Education Center in Yellowstone National Park. There are also net zero-energy buildings at Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. In Washington, D.C., the new Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool will save millions of gallons of water each year by recycling and filtering water from the Tidal Basin instead of using municipal water.

9th Mopar Car Show Saturday

Roy’s Grand will host its 9th Annual Mopar Car Show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“I like to get everybody together and have all the cars together and people together,” Parts Manager and event organizer Hank Swanson said. “Everybody talks and brags. It’s the interaction with the people and the fact that’s its laid back that makes it fun.

Swanson said this will be the first year there isn’t an entry fee for vehicles. Each entrant will bring canned food, which will be donated to the local food pantry at the Salvation Army.

“It was an idea from Roy and we wanted to do something different this year,” Swanson said. “We will take all the proceeds and canned food and donate it. It’s just Roy’s way of giving back to the community.”

Entrants for the show can arrive between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. for set up. The event is expected to have between 60 and 75 entrants, but can easily handle over 100.

All Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Plymouth and AMC street cars, race cars, antiques, trucks and 4x4s qualify for entry.

“We won’t judge them, we will appreciate them,” Swanson pointed out about the show. “We appreciate the cars and the cars that go back into the 60s and 70s. We are not a judging contest; we are a show and shine.”

The show will be in front of the building next to South Locust Street.

Swanson said a new feature this year will be a competition between students from Southeast Community College in Milford. Two teams will be responsible for tearing apart and reassembling an engine in the fastest time.

Also at the show, the State Patrol will have their Dodge Chargers on display along with the seat belt convincer. A passenger straps into the convincer like in a car. A latch is released and the passenger slides down a ramp and hits a stopper and comes to an immediate stop, simulating a head on collision and “convincing” the passenger to wear a seatbelt.

“Attendance always depends on the weather,” Swanson said. “Either way it will be a lot of family fun.”

Saab Automobile Expects To Restart Production Friday

TROLLHATTAN, Sweden (Dow Jones)--Swedish car maker Saab Automobile said Thursday that production at its Trollhattan plant will resume Friday.

"We still need to work out the logistics with one of our suppliers, but that is such a small detail, so we will be able to start up the production tomorrow," Saab purchase and production manager Gunnar Brunius told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview Thursday.

The Saab plant in Trollhattan has been idle for almost two months because suppliers stopped delivering parts when the car maker didn't pay its bills.

Last week, however, Saab's owner Spyker Cars NV (SPYKR.AE), announced a deal with Chinese car distributor Pang Da Automobile Trade Co. Ltd.(601258.SH) that provided Saab with much-needed short-term funding and since then the company has been in negotiation with its suppliers over debt payments and new deliveries.

Getting the production up and running by Friday, in time for a visit from Pang Da representatives, was the company's internal goal, but up until Thursday the outcome of negotiations with suppliers was still uncertain.

"It's been intense," said Brunius. "We have to get everything--from supplier deliveries to the plant itself--going again."

He expects that there will be disturbances in the production for quite some time ahead before everything runs smoothly again.

There are 6,500 cars in the Trollhattan plant waiting to be completed and, according to Brunius, they will all be finished before summer vacations start in July with no need for extra staff.

The announcement from Saab that production will resume Friday was good news to Paul Akerlund, mayor of the city of Trollhattan. As an employer of 38,00 workers, Saab is an important provider of jobs for the city's roughly 60,000 residents.

"It's a bumpy road ahead and there are still problems, but this is of great symbolic value, not least for all the people who work there," he said, adding "This should start to generate some much-needed income to the company."

He expressed irritation over the fact that the Swedish government hadn't yet approved the Russian financier Vladimir Antonov as owner of Saab as thousands of jobs were at stake.

"If Saab disappears, 10,000 people would be out of a job, not just here in Trollhattan but in surrounding municipalities as well," he said.

It is the second time in little over a year that the future of Saab has been in question. The company was going through a restructuring process when Spyker bought it from former owner General Motors Co. (GM) in February 2010. Akerlund, a former Saab employee, sees the risk in Trollhattan being too dependent on just one company.

"Twelve years ago we were 40% dependent on Saab, today it's 28%, but I do hope that Saab will live on," he said.

He thinks that there is reason to be critical of Saab's management for ending up in a situation where production had to be halted, but he will join them later Thursday to welcome the representatives of Saab's new Chinese partner to Trollhattan and show the local government's support for Saab.

"I want Saab to live on," he said. "Trollhattan would be empty without it."
