Ever since its birth in 1972, the Civic has undergone many evolutionary changes and stills remains one of the most successful cars ever built by Honda.

The futuristic styling of the Civic Si was developed to capture the European market. Up until earlier this year, Australian customers only had the option of the three door Type-R model.

Now the very stylish (yet practical), high performance (yet fuel efficient), Honda Civic Si offers a five door hatch with coupé styling.

Yes, I said "coupé styling"!

Just glancing at the hatch you would swear that it was a two door, but on closer inspection you'll find the somewhat hidden rear door handles to reveal that this is, in actual fact, a five door.

Driving the Civic Si around town was a breeze as the overall length and height has been reduced by 35mm. Now, this may not sound like much but when trying to squeeze into a tight parking space every bit counts - and what may be surprising to some is that the interior dimensions do not suffer at all from the reduced measurements.

While the length and the height has been decreased, Honda has increased the overall width by 65mm, to 1,765mm, and the front and rear tracks to 1,504mm (up 34mm) and 1,510mm (up 45mm), which increase handling.

The Civic Si handles like it's on rails, the handling is exceptional, the suspension remained settled over even the harshest mid corner bump while - at the same time - being comfortable enough to produce a good ride quality. Honda has found a happy medium between sport and comfort.

Not only was the Honda good around town, with the added six gear to the manual transmisson, the Civic Si was also great out on the freeway, cruising at 100km/h felt comfortable enough for the 1.8-litre engine and still had enough torque when needed.

After driving the Civic Si for a week both in the city and country, I found that fuel economy was great too, with the i-VTEC engine using 7.8 litres per 100km - bearing in mind that most of that was used for city driving.

The 1.8 litre i-VTEC engine found in the Civic Si first made its debut in the 8th generation Civic sedan in 2006 as a completely new engine.

The Civic Si 1.8-litre produces 103kW of power and 174Nm of torque and comes standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox or optional 5-speed automatic transmission.

The 1.8 litre i-VTEC engine provides excellent levels of driveability, fuel efficiency and performance that confirm Honda's outstanding reputation for advanced engine technology.

Honda's acclaimed i-VTEC system that is featured in the Civic Si is designed to reduce pumping losses and improve fuel economy.

In short Honda has created an engine that performs well at mid and low revs, yet remains responsive in most situations. They have also created a quiet engine with a refined engine tone, which competes well at the premium end of small hatch segment.

Exterior: 4.5/5

Exterior styling of the Honda Civic Si gives the impression that this is a bonafide pocket rocket, its not, but it still looks cool.

Defiantly different from anything currently on the market, the Civic Si features many of the same styling characteristics' as the Type-R. Its headlamps blend seamlessly into a clear plastic central panel, triangular front fog lights, integrated dual triangular exhaust pipes positioned at either side of the rear bumper, tailgate glass that is split via a modest rear spoiler and 'hidden' rear door handles.

With such aggressive styling, a wider and comparatively longer wheelbase, the Civic Si demands respect.

Interior: 4/5

Fit and finish of the Civic Si's interior is top rate and is futher enchanced by the black leather seats, which add a touch of class to the hatch.

Based on the 'Dual Link' concept, the dashboard is separated into two functional “links” - one provides visual information like economy, rev-limit and speedo, while the other displays a wide range of controls. As a result, Honda was able to give the Civic Si a futuristic and high-tech looking cockpit.

The Dual Link dashboard features a Multiplex instrument panel, the upper part of the instrument panel displays rev indicator lights to its left and an Eco indicator to the right - and most importantly vehicle speed. By positioning essential information as high on the dashboard as possible means that the driver only needs minimal eye movements between the road and the display for safer motoring.

Occupying the lower part of the dash is the large tachometer and within this, the multi-information display with odometer, trip computer, outside temperature, distance to empty, instant fuel consumption, average vehicle speed, average fuel economy and elapsed time.

The Civic Si's interior not only looks good its practical too. Exceptional utility is provided by rear seats that are similar in concept to the ‘Magic seats’ found in the Honda Jazz. The split-fold rear seat can be tipped up to form a second storage area in the rear passenger cabin. The rear seats also have a one-motion, dive-down feature that creates a flat loading space.

With the rear seats in the upright position the Civic Si has a total storage volume of 415-litres. There is also an illuminated 14 litre glove-box, a large capacity 1-litre centre pocket, a large capacity 6.9-litres console box, a multi-use double cup holder with sliding lid and all four doors are equipped with storage spaces ideally suited to holding 500ml bottles.

Soft touch materials are used for the upper sections of the dashboard and the door panels, while the lower section of the dashboard, the centre console and the lower part of the door panels are covered with a leather-effect grain.

Rounding out the Civic's interior is the adjustable multi-functional steering wheel with audio, cruise control and multi-info display buttons.

With a starting price of $41,145rrp for the manual (flat paint), the Civic Si lineup is positioned at the upper end of the hatchback spectrum, however, it is well-equipped and very versatile.

The 1.8 litre i-VTEC engine, six-speed transmission, build quality and drivability of the Honda Civic Si are hard to fault, the stylish hatch is simply a pleasure to drive.

However, the 40 thousand dollar plus price tag does push the Civic Si in to Audi A3 and Alfa Romeo 147 territory (both have a 2.0-litre engine), but on the other hand, Honda do make highly engineered and reliable cars.

Toyota Passo

Toyota has launched the 2nd generation Toyota Passo in Japan, and it now comes in two ‘body styles’ called the regular Passo and the Passo + Hana which is supposed to be the more stylish and upmarket model with features such as projector headlamps. They seem to be taking an “Alphard and Vellfire” or “Noah and Voxy” two styling for one model approach to alot of their JDM models now.

The car has alot more curves to it now, compared to the first generation Passo which was cute but had alot of straight lines in its design language such as in the headlamps and the way the front hood met the bumper. But most of us were just never familiar with that as Perodua had softened those lines in the Myvi, for example the Myvi’s headlamps are more rounded and the front hood became more shapely.

Toyota Passo + Hana

In Japan, the new Passo will be available with either a 1.0 liter or a 1.3 liter engine. The 4-speed auto has been phased out – now all models including 4WD versions come with a CVT transmission. The 1.0 liter uses the 1KR-FE that produces 69 PS (51kW) at 6,000rpm and 92Nm of torque at 3,600rpm.

The 1.3 liter engine is the new 1NR-FE which replaces the K3-VE in the previous generation car. The 1NR-FE now has dual variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves. Power output is 95 PS (70kW) at 6,000rpm and 121Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, which is up from the K3-VE’s 86hp (64kW) and 116Nm.

As with the previous Passo, it is a shared model with Daihatsu. A wheelbase of 2,440mm which is the same as the current Passo/Boon/Myvi models hints that most of the platform has been carried over, probably with some refinements here and there.

Will we see this new Passo coming to Malaysia as a new Myvi? The other question is how much of the Japanese model will get transferred over in the process – will we get the new Dual VVT-i engine, the CVT transmission and the column-mounted shifter?

Weird and unusual car

1. The Zoop Car: Designed by the unlikely candidate of Paris fashion house Maison de Courrèges, this electric car is actually capable of speeds of up to 120mph and can seat three people. It might be eco-friendly and relatively fast, but I don’t imagine driving a lemon is for everyone’s taste.

2. The Parkcycle: Whilst not technically a car, it’s roughly car-shaped and was used to occupy parking spaces for the global event PARK(ing), in which participants turn ordinary parking spaces into public parks. Designed by art group Rebar and with a top speed of around 8km/h, it may not be the most maneuverable vehicle, but it does come with a 5m tree on it!

3. The Live-In Truck: Living Is.be has transformed the bed of a truck into a fully-functional living space. With hatches in the roof to allow natural sunlight and ventilation into the room, it also comes with a double bed, a sink, shower (naturally with running water) and a kitchen stove.

4. The Transparent Car: Similar in color to the Zoop Car, this car is different in that almost all of it is completely see-through. Designed by Swiss manufacturer Rinspeed, this is the perfect car for those that want to be seen both outside of the car and inside the car.

5. Fiat Jolly Panda: It may have a bizarre name, but the more bizarre thing is that this car totally lacks doors! Stylishly designed and with non-toxic and UV resistant materials, its aesthetic impression is one that appeals to those with a taste for the more simple-looking vehicles. Although you do have to wonder if it’s not in danger of being stolen…

6. The Kenguru Car: This is a car that is designed specifically for wheelchair users. There’s no front seat, just an open space for the operator to position their wheelchair, which gets locked in place. The car itself is controlled with a joystick device, and with the option to simply roll in and out without having to hoist yourself into a seat, it’s the easiest car-tech available for wheelchair users.

7. Nissan Terranaut: While a concept-car, the concept alone is pretty cool. Rather than standard RV interiors, Nissan have gone with features and designs that bring to mind aeronautics and maybe even a little sci-fi.

8. Becker Jet Vans: Unfortunately not a jet-powered van as the name might suggest, but instead you get an outrageously luxurious interior which has been heavily influenced by private jets and limousines.

9. The Surface Orbiter: Built from a milk-tanker, taking over 4 four years and costing around $175,000, this was New Yorker Rick Dobbertin’s dream machine, and was constructed to cross both land and sea without any aid from a support vehicle. Impressively, the Orbiter has clocked up over 3,000 miles in the sea and 33,000 miles on land.

10. The Pacman Car: For anyone that enjoys a bit of nostalgia, or even just unusual cars. This was a converted hot-rod drag-racing car made to look like the classic arcade-game character Pacman.

Peugeot EVE

If you thought that the Chameleon was smart enough when it comes to changing shades and conserving energy with its ambush hunting, then think again. “Eve” is one of the most delightful concept cars that you would have seen in quite some time. Designed by Omar Huerta, the car is filled with plenty of green features. While the car does not change colors as dramatically as a Chameleon does, Eve can change the shades by using a unique light reflecting technique that is synchronized with the mood of the driver. So, the merrier you are, the brighter your car is!

Eve also has a specially coated windshield that helps it tap into solar energy. The body of the car is made from an exclusive mixture of polymers that generate electricity through the friction of the wheels. This, along with solar power, would be almost sufficient to run Eve emission-free. Crafted for three, Eve is all about going green.

Like many concept cars, Eve might also never see the light of day. The fancy look and the all-electric engine depend on a polymer technology that is still to be found and tested. All this surely means that Eve is not coming out in the next couple of decades.

Felidae

Modern semi-trailers often cause damage to fragile goods during transportation, as they are not very flexible with their suspension and also consume way too much energy while loading and unloading stuff. Ramandeep Singh is the designer of Felidae, and he draws inspiration from a leaping leopard to design his modern and energy conscious semi-trailer. The vehicle sports a flexible suspension and hence can touch the floor completely while unloading material such as glass. The truck can also vary its size, depending on the space available on city roads, and it is powered by an engine that can run on solar power, bio-fuel and even electric charge or a combination of the three.

There is very little you could crib about the Felidae, as it is both eco-friendly and easy on cargo. Hopefully, we will see a prototype coming out soon. Considering how bad most trucks and semi-trailers are in terms of emissions, this could be an absolute boon.

Solar-powered car concepts are on the rise; they promise more range, higher speed and better performance. This new concept by Kim Gu-Han of Universität Duisburg-Essen, Germany, dubbed the Helios off-road car, adds another dimension to solar cars – the ability to power other electronics in your house when you are not driving it.

The car takes inspiration from none other than the animal kingdom for its extendable solar panel design. I know no one would want to drive something with a hell lot of solar panels rising above from the roof of the car, but this car does not compromise on stylish looks, as these solar panels can be folded down when you want to take it out for a drive. And when it’s sitting idle, you can simply extend the solar panels and power your home with the energy generated.

A car with an ability to generate electricity not only for itself but also for other power hungry appliances is praiseworthy. However, a car with such solar panels will undoubtedly be for people born with deep pockets. The presumed high cost of the car can put things down a bit, but if somehow car manufacturers devise a way to keep the cost of such a car down, then we surely will call it “The Wonder Car.”

Peugeot OMNI

In 1973, a Swedish automobile designer named Bengt Ilon dreamt of a car that could move sideways on “Omni-wheels,” which could speed up transport and take it to a whole new level. The concept was not obviously picked up or developed through the decades. Now, finally we have a model that has been designed for Peugeot – OMNI.

The car, which is perfect for future megalopolis, has a sporty, aerodynamic body that represents evolution of the new age. The small city car has been made for just two occupants, keeping in mind that in 95% cases a car just has one occupant at a time. The exterior body is intended to be developed with carbon fiber, which should guarantee strength without adding much to the body of the car.

Solar cells are placed on the body of the car to refuel the lithium batteries sitting beneath the hood of the car. Traditional side cameras in this car are replaced by cameras, which enable the driver to see all objects in sides on the dashboard mounted display.

The most stunning feature of the car still remains its ability to move sideways at a speed of 5 km/h, which would ease parking and will make sure that the car does not always get stuck in traffic jams.

Apart from high cost fears, the “Omni-wheels” technology still seems a couple of decades away from realism. However, if the technology is made then it could truly refine the way we drive.

Rocket Car in LA

Car makers can come up with some really attractive designs and concepts, but they surely can never match the wackiness of those who make cars from the dump or in their own garage with the help of few tools and plenty of creativity. Here is another example of exactly that as a wonderfully unique car hits the streets of Los Angeles and this one is not from the stables of Ferrari or the McLaren boys. This one apparently has been crafted by one of the locals and it sure has the spunk and the glam to roar around, if not take flight or blast off!

The car is not really powered by any rocket engine, but it looks convincing enough to be put in to orbit. Someone has built it from scratch and that is a tribute to both their patience and the fact that they have that amount of free time to work with. So it does not escape the atmosphere of the planet, but it sure as hell escapes all conventions of car design and you can bet this is the least of wacky things that can come out of LA or even California!

Proton EMAS3

Proton’s range of concept hybrid city cars have been officially unveiled in Geneva today and we now know that they are called the EMAS, the EMAS Country and the EMAS3. For non-Malaysians reading this site, EMAS basically means gold in Bahasa Malaysia, but in this context it also stands for ‘Eco Mobility Advance Solution’. The cars were unveiled at Italdesign Giugiaro’s booth by our ex-PM Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who so happens to also be Proton’s advisor.

The EMAS is the 5-door 4-seater silver hatchback that we first saw. The other two models are the EMAS3, which is a three-door 3+1 seater for city driving, and the EMAS Country which is for country driving – that’s the model with the SUV styling and raised suspension. The concept cars were designed by Italdesign-Giugiaro to fit the description of a compact car with the passenger room of an SUV.

Proton EMAS

The EMAS range of vehicles all run on a common platform that can spawn some other body variants such as a small van for short commercial trips around the city. The chassis has a wheelbase of 2,590mm (the shorter EMAS3’s wheelbase is 2,035mm). Imagine a small zero emissions and silent van used by Pos Malaysia to deliver your mail and parcels! The batteries are positioned somewhere at the centre of the car. The Lotus Range Extender engine is mounted at the front.

It’s basically a 1.2 liter inline-3 engine that’s designed to run only specifically as certain RPM ranges, since it does not drive the wheels directly but only generates power to recharge the batteries. This means it does not necessarily have to rev very high. Drive torque is provided by the electric motor. So it is not surprising that the 1.2 liter engine’s peak power is 51 horsepower at a very low 3,500rpm.

Because the engine does not have to rev high, Lotus can design it for a lower redline and certain parts such as valve springs and etc do not have to be built to tolerate higher speeds. This can save weight and cost – and the result is an engine that weighs only 56kg according to the original specs. But in any case, the specs that was unveiled here is actually slightly more powerful than what Lotus initially announced when they introduced the range extender engine. The original Lotus Range Extender press release quoted two different power generation points depending on load – 20hp at 1,500rpm and 47hp at 3,500rpm. The engine can run on gasoline, ethanol, methanol or natural gas.

The electric motor outputs a continuous power of 45kW and a peak power of 75kW. The motor’s torque output is pegged at 240Nm at peak, and does not require the use of a gearbox, so the motor drives the rear wheels through a fixed ratio. 0 to 100km/h tales 14 seconds, the car’s top speed is 170km/h, and one battery charge’s worth of range is 50km before the internal combustion engine needs to kick in to recharge it. You can also charge the battery via an electrical outlet as it has plug-in capabilities. A full charge is said to take 3 hours with 240V 13A power point.

The interior (which you can see above – we’re in the midst of getting better pix) is said to feature two TFT monitors in the center mounted at a concave angle. The right hand monitor shows the speedo and various other vital statistics of the car such as the hybrid system energy flow diagrams, while the left hand monitor handles the in-car entertainment and communication settings, including a browser for internet access. A third display located beneath the center console is a touch screen display that allows you to control various car functions.

“The unveiling of the concept cars today reflects the long-term strategy we have in matching global automotive standards as we expand and reinforce our presence worldwide. We strive to listen to our customers to ensure the development of a global car that meets customer’s requirements and expectations. The aim is to produce the global car for world market in the future,” said Proton managing director Dato Syed Zainal. According to DSZ, the car is between 17 to 24 months away from production, so we’re looking at a 2012 to 2013 launch date!

Aside from luxury vehicles and super cars, the weird ones also catch my attention. Their unusual looks and style are indeed amazing, so I decided to post about them again. But today, I’m gonna’ show ya’ll the weirdest and the most unique cars around the world. And some of them are absolutely ridiculous yet still creative. I never thought that, people will come up with such concepts and it is true that some car owners are obsessed with their vehicles and decided to make them look what they are into or reflect their own personality. Man! Most of these machines are not just weird, but also expensive.

Here are some of the pictures that I have gathered which includes the weirdest, funniest and the most unique vehicles that ever exist;

This vehicle out here looks like a luxury military car. It’s a bit similar to a Lamborghini vehicle painted with a camouflage style. It should be included to the new G.I Joe movie.

Talkin’ about weird cars, this limo is definitely long. It looks like a combination of an airplane and a limousine. It actually has more than 15 windows and twenty-four wheels. Just imagine sitting on the third window while your companion sits at the last window, you’ll need a phone if you wanna’ talk lolz.

Here’s another weird vehicle called the boat car, it’s like a boat-at-the-top-of-the-car concept. And the vehicle used here looks like a classic style. It does look like a boat but it is still a car, it can’t even float, there are wheels in it.
At first, I thought it was a motor home built in a vehicle, but I’ve noticed that its front looks like a bike. But it’s cool. This one’s good for travelers and riders.lolz

This vehicle is called the skeletal big foot. The look of this machine is enough to scare anyone off. But man! It is a tough rider.

From weird to cool, so far, this is the coolest police car I’ve ever seen. Well, it looks like a car from a futuristic movie.

Mitsuoka Orochi – I’m not talkin’ about Ultraman, but it is a name of a super car. Some call it ugly, but I don’t think so, for me it is unique. I’ve noticed that this car is smiling. This is actually a Japanese sports car. It was originally built way back from 2001 and redesigned in 2003 and 2005. Gamers are probably familiar with it since it appears on the video game Auto Modellista.

This vehicle was actually listed in the Guinness Book of Record as the smallest production car that ever existed. It was called as the Peel P50 and built by the Manx Peel Engineering Company. It features one door, one headlight and one windscreen wiper. So it won’t definitely pass the safety regulations. Lolz. It only measures 134 cm or 52.8 in by 99 cm (39 in) and the height of 1.2m or 4 ft.

Man! This is the coolest ambulance I’ve ever seen. All I can say is Wow!

The “atmosphere” – this is the meaning of the Japanese concept car named “taiki” made by Mazda. This cool street machine is equipped with the latest Renesis rotary engine under the hood.

This is a modified version of Ferrari F430 that comes in a black matte finish and was recently shown by Novitec at the 2007 Frankfurt Morot Show. Labeled as Tunero, this street machine features 2 race intercooled supercharged and equipped with new intake system, oil coolers and fuel injectors. Experienced sportscar team John Danby Racing will debut the Honda NSX for owner and Britcar race winner David Fenn having completed the build of the Japanese sportscar in time for this season’s final Britcar round at Brands Hatch on the 7th November.

The unique Honda NSX has been built to comply with the Britcar Production regulations and completed a successful shakedown test at Snetterton in Norfolk last Friday with sportscar racer James Barclay.

Subaru revealed today at the SEMA Show the Legacy GTk (k standing from kart) concept - the perfect car for a family day at the track. The Legacy GTk is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged and intercooled engine produces 300 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque, up from the stock model’s 265 hp and 258 lb.-ft.

The Legacy GTk features a black on red paintwork with front air dam with fog lights, custom window tint and rear diffuser. JAC Products was roped in to work on the roof cargo management hardware while the liftgate spoiler, the midgate spoiler and the blackout-style HID headlights came from a Japanese domestic market (JDM) Legacy.

On the interior there is a Harman/Kardon sound system, STI aluminium pedals and a 7-inch touch screen.
