You can shift gears in the same way you do with a manual, but there is no need to step on the clutch (actually, there is no clutch). It's done via hydraulics. Instead of the conventional H-pattern, drivers can shift their own gears by pulling back or forward on the "shifter".  Shifting is lightning fast. I found one for sale a year back or so, a 1995  Mercedes-Benz C280, and made the owner an offer on the car, unfortunately the owner change his mind about selling the car. I found another one, a 1999 Mercedes-Benz C280. Mercedes Benz tuner, AMG came up with three supercar variants of the Mercedes-Benz W210 during is seven years, the E50, E55 and E60.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first of this was the E50 produced from 1996 to 1997, although all the E50's priduced were sold as 1997 models. The C36 and M3 continued the horsepower war originally began in the 80's with the rivalty of the BMW E30 M3 and the &lt;a href="http://autobahnrunners.blogspot.com/2009/01/1988-190e-25-16-cosworth.html"&gt;Cosworth tuned Mercedes Benz 190E's&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The C36 was developed with AMG, a car tuning company that had been acquired by Daimler-Benz a few years earlier. Compared to the regular W202's, the C36 had a racing-tuned suspension and a 3.6 L engine that had a maximum output of 276 hp at 5750 rpm and 284 lb·ft at 4000 rpm.  The top speed of the C36 was electronically limited to 250 km/h. Only a total of 5200 C 36 AMGs were produced.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1998 AMG developed a new C-Class sports sedan, the C 43 AMG. The C43 powered by a 4.3 L V8, which pridcued 302 hp/225 kW at 5850 rpm, with a torque 302 lb·ft at 3250 rpm. As part of its marketing efforts, Mercedes-Benz wanted to enter the car into motor sports events, and tapped British race care engineering company, Cosworth to do the job.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cosworth took the 2.3 liter 8-valve 136HP engine and modified the head to a dual overhead cam 16-valve set-up boosting power to 185HP (US Version 167HP). From its inception, the E28 was criticized for looking too much like the car it replaced the E12. The E34, did not disappoint. Over 1.3 million E34's were built from 1987 to 1996. The most common high performance E34 in the market its the big bore six, 535i. A total 99,861 of E4 535i cars having come of the production line. It is also probably the best bang for the buck high performance cars in the second hand local market today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While not as fast as the M5, the 3.5 liter engine in the 535i  produced 208 HP and 225 FT/LB of torque. The car was equipped with various engines from a modest 1.8 liter carburetted engine to a 3.5 liter 285 HP screamer. One interesting model had an engine produced for the E28 was the 2.7 liter "eta" engine in the BMW 528e. The end result was a low revving 2.7 liter engine which produced 121 HP and 240 Nm torque. Combined with high drive gearing the "e" model BMW's achieved exceptional fuel efficiency at the expense of accelaration and top end speed. The result was a BMW 5-series mid-size sedan that delivered 22 miles per gallon on the EPA's city fuel economy cycle and an impressive 32 mpg on the highway.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At low speeds, driving one of these eta powered machines feels a bit like driving a diesel (although it accelerates faster than a naturally aspirated diesel engine) but feels better once you pick-up some speed. The car goes from first to second gear very quickly, and the tremedous torque the engine creates allow for this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Buyers looking for the "Ultimate Driving Machince" shunned the low revving eta engine and preferred BMW's more thirsty screamers. BMW no longer produces "eta" engines today.
