Baby

A woman in Skokie hit the gas instead of the brake and it caused her to run into the front of a building that houses a cleaners, according to local authorities. Fortunately no one was killed but a baby that was in the store was injured and needed medical attention. Two other people were also hurt.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Skokie. The cleaners is located in the 4000 block of Golf Road, just west of the intersection with Crawford Avenue. The cleaners is part of a strip mall with one row of parking out front. Authorities have not said if the driver was parked before the crash but they have stated that no charges have been filed related to this incident.

It appears that the woman drove into a section of the front of the store that contained a glass entry door and a large glass window. The building, which is made of brick, reportedly sustained some damage. At the time of the crash, several people were inside the cleaners, including the owner, the owner's father, the owner's stepmother, and a baby. The baby was being held by the owner's stepmother when the car came crashing in. The impact of the collision pushed the baby from the woman's arms and caused the baby to fall underneath the car. The father of the baby was not in the cleaners at the time but responded to the collision. He backed up the car to free the baby and it appeared that the child was not hit by any of the car's tires. The baby was, however, face down in the wreckage of what used to be the glass window and door. The baby was taken to an area hospital where doctors stated the baby suffered only minor injuries but would observe the baby for some time. Reports indicate that two other people suffered injuries. It is not clear whether one of those injured was the driver of the car.

It is not yet clear what caused the woman to press the gas pedal instead of the brake. Authorities have chosen not to release the age of the driver, allowing some in the area to speculate that she may be elderly. But accidents of this type are caused by drivers of all ages, not just the elderly. Being distracted while behind the wheel can increase the risk of accidentally traveling in an unintended direction as can simple negligence. Some of the biggest forms of distraction faced by Illinois drivers include cell phones, texting, eating or drinking, conversations with passengers, children and pets in the car, and even daydreaming. Whatever the cause, if a driver is not completely focused on the road, the driver is distracted and the chances of causing a collision increase significantly.

If you have been hurt in an accident where a driver was distracted or not paying attention, call the Chicago car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a no obligation telephone consultation. We can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (312) 924-7575 and the call is free. As the 4th of July nears, families will be busy finalizing their plans, making sure travel arrangements are in order, and turning on the barbecue. One thing that may not be getting their focus is the safety of the roads around Independence Day and the significant risk posed by driving during the festivities.

It is unfortunate but the holiday that celebrates America's independence is now linked with drunk driving, speeding, and recklessness on the roads. This combination results to create one of the deadliest days of the year to be a driver or a passenger on a road of any size and in any state in the nation. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that 148 people will be killed on the road on the 4th, about 30 percent more than the standard average of 114 fatalities each day.

The increase in the number of traffic fatalities is one of the big reasons that many local law enforcement agencies use heavy patrols of city and county roads during times when celebrations are expected. The belief is that the increase in patrol will allow officers to apprehend dangerous driver before an accident occurs or even deter some drivers from acting negligent in the first place. If a driver notices a heavy police presence, the thought is that the driver may be less likely to text behind the wheel, blow through a stop sign, or speed. Any positive change in driving behavior can save a life.

Drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs pose a threat to everyone in the vicinity, including passengers within their vehicle, other drivers, bicyclists, or even pedestrians. A driver affected by an intoxicating compound cannot adequately make the necessary decisions to ensure a safe drive which is why it is illegal to drive while under the influence. Yet when faced with the possibility of a celebration with families and friends, too many drivers forget this and choose to drive after drinking and people end up hurt or killed.

Independence Day should be a time of fun celebration and at Abels & Annes, P.C., we encourage you to have a great holiday but also to keep safety in mind. Never drive after drinking and never let someone else drink and drive. If your celebrations will include alcohol, consider using a designated driver, taking public transportation, or using a taxi to get around town.

If you have been injured in an accident with a negligent or drunk driver, call the Chicago car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free, no obligation telephone consultation. The study was conducted by Transportation for America, an organization focused on improving American infrastructure, and reports that nationally, about 11 percent of bridges are in danger.

Many of the nation's bridges and overpasses are old, causing much of the problem. With most designed intended for a 50 year life, the average age of America's bridges hovering around 43 years means that the current problem will only increase in the future unless steps are taken soon.

According to the report, Illinois has 26,514 bridges and overpasses, of which 8.7 percent have been deemed structurally deficient. This designation is applied to bridges that need some immediate repair to an area that threatens safety.

In the past decade, there have been multiple bridge collapses that have garnered public attention. Some of those turned fatal with unsuspecting motorists losing their lives. This study indicates that more tragedies like this could continue to happen, claim the lives of many Americans and injuring others. Illinois is no exception as the state's numerous highways and bodies of water mean there are bridges and overpasses everywhere.

Awareness of safety concerns related to aging bridges increases but the means to fix the bridges does not follow. Without a significant source of financial support, many of these structures will remain in their dangerous condition indefinitely, threatening drivers on a daily basis.

Though it is cruel, there may be little that an average citizen can do to rectify this situation until an accident happens. After that, a victim may have a claim against a city or state for allowing a dangerous bridge to remain in its dangerous condition while in use. But this does not eliminate the problem or prevent loss of life which means that it is a focus on the tragic outcome and not on prevention.

If you have been injured in an accident caused by a dangerous or defective bridge, it is important to realize that you can get help and that you may have a claim for your loss. As a victim, it is your right to seek representation you deserve to help you in a time of need.

A personal injury attorney can take a difficult and complicated case and handle it for you, often getting you a settlement where none was previously offered or getting you a larger settlement than if you were not represented by leveling the field with insurance companies.

If you have been injured in an accident, let the Chicago personal injury lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. provide you with a free, no obligation telephone consultation regarding your accident and whether you have a claim. As a result, the Pace van entered the path of a Cadillac and caused a collision, injuring eleven people. The collision occurred in the area of 111th and Wentworth in Chicago in the morning hours.

The Pace van was transporting as many as nine developmentally disabled adults at the time of the crash and the Pace driver was reportedly cited for failing to yield the right-of-way while turning left. The passengers of the Pace van were transported to area hospitals for examination where their conditions are not known, though it is believed that none were seriously injured.

The Cadillac was driven by a 55-year-old who was injured in the accident, as was a child passenger in the Cadillac. Both were taken to the hospital and were listed in stable condition.

The intersection where this accident occurred is small and controlled by a traffic light. It is not yet clear exactly how the crash occurred and whether the cars were on the same road at the time of impact. What is clear is that the actions of the Pace van driver placed the lives of her passengers as well as the lives of those in the other vehicle in danger. Through her negligence, eleven people were injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

People often think that they are safer while traveling by public transit than when they are in private vehicles. This sense of safety can be errant as crashes happen frequently between buses and vans used by the public. When these accidents occur, they are likely to result in injuries because often safety devices, including seat belts, are not present or are not used.

The fact remains that when you board a bus or a van driven by another, you place your safety in that driver's hands. Any mistake the driver makes can result in a collision that may lead to injuries or even death. This is the reason that there are strict laws governing the conduct of public transit drivers, including those who drive Pace buses, and that the insurance for these entities can be particularly difficult and confusing.

With most Pace bus accidents, there is insurance coverage available to pay for injuries sustained through the negligence of a Pace employee. Therefore those passengers within the Pace bus as well as the driver and passenger in the Cadillac may have a claim against Pace for their damages sustained in this collision.

Similarly, if you have been injured in an accident with a Pace bus, call the Chicago bus accident attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. today to learn if you have a claim. We provide a free, no obligation telephone consultation to all injured victims and we have an attorney standing by 24 hours a day to take your call. Settles Car Accident Case for $100,000

The personal injury lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. recently settled a car accident case for the available policy limits of $100,000. Though liability appeared clear, the defendant's insurance company refused to make a reasonable offer for settlement for years, causing our attorneys to fight in court for our client's rights. In the end, we succeeded in securing every dollar of available insurance money for our client, who was injured in 2010.

This accident occurred when our defendant, a male, was driving his vehicle Arlington Heights and towing an empty trailer. The defendant, a female, was behind our client on the same road and in the same lane. As the light turned red, traffic came to a stop and our client stopped his car as well. The defendant admitted that she was not paying attention and admitted that she rear-ended our client. The defendant further admitted to following our client too closely while driving.

Our client was injured in the accident and needed medical treatment. Over time, doctors determined that he sustained a bulging disc in his neck and a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder. To repair his shoulder, our client underwent surgery and then followed up with rehabilitation, including physical therapy. He also underwent an epidural steroid injection in his neck to treat his pain and discomfort which radiated to his arm.

We knew our client was not at fault and sustained significant injuries so we spent every day fight for him and fighting for his rights. We filed a lawsuit in Cook County on behalf of our client that alleged the defendant was not paying attention while she was driving, failed to slow down or stop for traffic, and hit our client, causing his injuries. Due to our persistent fighting, the insurance company for the defendant eventually offered the full benefits available - a good victory for our client.

After an accident, it may seem clear and obvious who is at-fault and who was a victim. Even so, that does not mean that you will have an easy time making a recovery for your injuries. Insurance companies are businesses and some deny valid claims in an effort to keep profits high and expenses low. This is why any car accident victim who is not represented by a personal injury lawyer is at a disadvantage.

At Abels & Annes, P.C., we make it our business to do the right thing and to fight for those who are hurt through the negligence of another. We never represent insurance companies and we only represent victims.

We do not shy away from a case just because it is hard or difficult. When a person is injured, they deserve justice, and that is what we help provide, regardless of how challenging a case can be. We work hard for our clients and we keep working until a favorable result is reached.

If you have been hurt in an auto accident, call the Chicago car accident attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free case consultation. We can be reached 24 hours a day at (312) 924-7575 or toll free at (855) 529-2442. We also offer free in-home and in-hospital consultations for clients who want to meet with us in person but are too injured to come to our offices. Call today and let us help you recover from your losses.

Prior Blog Entries:

Motorcyclist Killed in Lakeview Crash, Chicago Car Accident Lawyers Blog, published June 21, 2013.

Barrington Hills Man Charged in Fatal DUI Accident, Chicago Car Accident Lawyers Blog, published June 20, 2013.

Chicago Car Accident Lawyer

Automobile Accident Lawyers

Chicago Car Accident Lawyers Settle Left Turn Case for $118,000

The car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. recently settled a case for $118,000. Our client in this case was a passenger in a car driven by a negligent driver.

This claim stems from a November accident where a driver was attempting to make a left turn. His view was obstructed by a large bus in front of him who was also attempting to make a left turn on a different road. Though the driver could not see oncoming traffic, he sped up and turned left anyway, seriously risking his safety as well as the safety of his passenger and other drivers on the road.

The driver turned into the path of an oncoming car and caused a collision. Our client was a passenger in the turning car at the time of the crash. The impact was so significant that our client's vehicle rolled over, causing the roof of the car to indent into the passenger compartment more than 12 inches.

When the police responded to the scene, the driver admitted that his view of oncoming traffic was obscured but that he chose to turn anyway. The driver received a traffic citation for failing to yield the right-of-way when turning left.

Our client was unconscious immediately following the accident. He was transported to Lutheran General's Emergency Department by ambulance where doctors examined him and performed tests. Our client was diagnosed with a concussion and a fractured leg. He remained in the hospital overnight so doctors could assess his cognitive function following his concussion.

After his discharge, our client sought follow up treatment for his injuries. While his leg healed, his ability to walk, drive, and work were affected as was his ability to think clearly. After some time, our client was deemed to have recovered from the accident and was discharged from treatment.

The lawyers at Abels & Annes were able to set up a claim against the left turning driver's insurance company for our client's injuries. As in cases like this, a passenger can recover for injuries sustained in an accident even if the passenger is in the same vehicle as the driver that causes a crash. This is because the driver alone, and not his passengers, are to blame for the accident so injured passengers are still entitled to a recovery.

At Abels & Annes, P.C., we understand that each case is unique and each case deserves consideration on its own merits. That is why we work hard every day for our clients and we fight for each one separately. We were able to help this client after he was hurt, and we might be able to help you as well.

If you have been injured in an accident where a driver failed to yield the right-of-way, call the Chicago car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes today for a free telephone consultation. We have an attorney standing by 24 hours a day to take your call at (312) 924-7575 or toll free at (855) 529-2442 so please do not hesitate. One of the drivers lost control, drove through the median and the car rolled over. Once the car came to a rest, it was clear that all the occupants were injured. A 16-year-old girl died from her injuries.

A Honda and a Ford Focus are believed to have been racing on the highway with both vehicles being driven by teenage males. Authorities believe that the 2004 Honda attempted to pass the 2000 Ford and was unsuccessful. The driver of the Honda made a second attempt and lost control, causing that vehicle to crash.

In addition to the 17-year-old male driver, there were three passengers in the Honda. A 16-year-old female and a 20-year-old male were backseat passengers and both are believed to have been ejected from the car upon impact. A front seat 18-year-old male, the 17-year-old driver, and the 20-year-old male were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where their conditions were not know.

The Ford was reportedly driven by a 19-year-old male and it was loaded with a 13-year-old female, a 15-year-old female, and a 16-year-old male. The Ford did not crash and there were no injuries in that vehicle.

Friends say that the teenagers were friends and that the drivers met up at a gas station in Grayslake earlier that day. The occupants of the Honda are believed to have been swimming at a friend's pool earlier in the day and it is not clear where they were heading at the time of the crash.

Now both drivers face charges related to the incident. The driver of the Honda has been charged with reckless homicide, aggravated street racing, and driving without a valid license and without insurance. The driver of the Ford has been charged with aggravated street racing and having an expired vehicle registration.

Drag racing is incredibly dangerous for those involved and for other drivers on the road. It takes only a slight error or over-correction to send a speeding car out of control and into another vehicle or barrier. When this happens, people are likely to get hurt. In addition to the criminal and traffic charges pending against the two drivers in this case, they may face civil claims by those who were injured or by the family of the young girl who lost her life. The law allows victims to bring a claim for recovery against a negligent driver so that the driver can be held responsible for his actions.

If you have been injured in an accident where another driver acted negligently, you may have a claim for your injuries. Call the Chicago car accident injury attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. today and let us provide you with a free telephone consultation. The crash reportedly happened in Los Angeles and has Brown facing charges of driving without a valid license and a misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run.

The accident occurred when Brown reportedly rear-ended another car near Toluca Lake. Reportedly Brown refused to give his driver's license information to the other driver and gave fake insurance information. He then left the scene of the crash.

Failing to provide accurate information is a misdemeanor that could land Brown with jail time. However, the celebrity has taken to Twitter to strongly deny all allegations. According to his official Twitter account, Brown states that he provided his driver's license information and that he had a valid license at the time of the crash. He also states that the insurance information he gave was correct. Brown has posted a picture of what he claims is the other car involved in the accident. According to him, the car shows no damage and there was no damage done to his car either. Brown alleges that the other driver noticed the cameras surrounding him and it caused her to contact "the cops thinking of a payday from Chris Brown when [he] followed proper procedures."

These charges are significant for Brown who is currently on probation for a 2009 felony after Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting girlfriend Rhianna. With these new charges, a judge could determine Brown is in violation of his parole and revoke it, sending him to jail or prison. Prosecutors have claimed that they will not seek to revoke Brown's probation due to this recent incident. Brown is also facing charges that he pushed a woman in a nightclub on Saturday night, causing her to fall and injure her knee. He also denies those claims.

When it comes to hit-and-run accidents, each state has slightly different laws but all states require a driver to remain on the scene after a crash and provide basic information. In Illinois, fleeing the scene of a crash that results in great bodily harm or death is a felony charge and can lead to years in prison if a driver is convicted. When a driver causes an accident that injures another and then leaves, the injured person may not receive the needed medical care, which increases the chance of permanent injuries occurring or even death.

Many hit-and-run drivers are identified after a collision takes place. When this happens, the consequences can be significant. Regardless of whether a fleeing driver is later identified, though, an injured victim may have a claim for injuries that are incurred as the result of a hit-and-run accident.

At Abels & Annes, P.C., we are Chicago hit-and-run accident injury attorneys who regularly represent clients involved in accidents where the other driver fled. If that driver is later identified, we may be able to help you bring a claim against the driver for your damages. If that driver is never identified, we may still be able to help you make a recovery under what is call an uninsured motorist claim through your own insurance company. When you are the victim of an accident, you have rights and we are here to help you realize what those rights are.

If you have been a victim of an accident, call us today at (312) 924-7575 and let us provide you with a free case consultation. The parade will begin near the United Center on Washington Street and Des Plaines Avenue and will travel east along Washington until it reaches Michigan Avenue, where the route will briefly jog north to Randolph and then south along Congress. The parade is set to being at 10:30 a.m. and will conclude near Grant Park with a rally scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Hutchinson Field.

The parade will remind many in the city of the same celebration that took place after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010. But there will be some differences as police and city officials learned from that celebration and will make changes to make the 2013 parade even better. There will be barricades along the parade route and neither alcohol nor backpacks will be allowed in Grant Park. Access to Grant Park will be controlled and police will be searching bags of those who intend to participate in the rally. All of this is designed to keep the city safe, but there is only so much that the police can do to prevent incidents from occurring.

One thing to keep in mind is the possibility of vehicle-related accidents. With an expected 1.2 to 1.3 million participating in Friday's events, the city will be bustling with activity. Blockades on the streets will force drivers to take alternative routes that may be confusing or less familiar to them. These drivers may also be looking for elusive parking spaces so they can enjoy the parade and once these cars are parked, their occupants will become pedestrians traveling the streets and sidewalks of the city. With a large number of vehicles and a large number of pedestrians present, chances are good that an incident between the two groups will occur. When a pedestrian is struck by a car, injuries almost always result and often the pedestrian is killed.

City officials are encouraging the use of public transportation on Friday to reduce vehicular traffic as much as possible. In addition to the CTA buses and trains within the city, Metra trains are offering a special $5 pass for travel on Friday to encourage suburban commuters to use the train. Pedestrians and parade-watchers are being strongly encouraged to heed the directions of police officers and to mind all barriers along the streets. The City of Chicago has warned that those who cross over parade barriers will risk arrest by doing so.

In addition to the pedestrian and vehicular congestion that is expected in Chicago, history suggests that there may be a lot of alcohol consumed, adding to some of the dangers that are already present. While the risk of drinking and driving is often publicized, it is important to realize that drinking in public while walking downtown has risks of its own. Alcohol makes pedestrians less aware of their surroundings and less cautious when crossing a street which can lead to collisions.

If you plan to celebrate in Chicago on Friday, keep in mind that nothing ruins a good time like an accident. You should remain aware of your surroundings and watch out for any dangers, including drivers or others who have been drinking. Always follow the instructions of the Chicago Police Department and other officials and leave plenty of time for travel.

If you have been injured in an accident, call the Chicago personal injury lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free telephone consultation. Bond was set at $100,000 plus the requirement of relinquishing his passport and submitting to random drug tests.

The charges stem from a March crash on Illinois Highway 59 in Barrington Hills where the defendant allegedly was driving under the influence of Lorazepam, a prescription sedative that is highly addictive and known to be abused as a recreational drug. The defendant was driving an SUV northbound when he sideswiped a southbound car and then crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by a 61-year-old man. The 61-year-old man died from his injuries and his 44-year-old fiancee, who was a passenger in his car, suffered severe leg injuries. The defendant sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital. While there, a blood test revealed Lorazepam in his system.

The defendant has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence involving death and aggravated driving under the influence involving great bodily harm. These are felony charges with incarceration in prison as a sentence if the defendant is convicted on all charges.

The defendant in this case reportedly did not have a prescription for Lorazepam but even if he did, he could be guilty of driving under the influence if the drug affected his ability to drive. Lorazepam is known to cause drowsiness and sleepiness and for this reason, the National Institutes of Health state that no one should take the medication and drive until they know how the medicine affects the individual. It is not clear whether the defendant had previously taken Lorazepam before the collision but police did find a bottle of the drug in the defendant's car after the crash.

Car accidents are very common in Illinois. In fact, there were 281,788 automobile collisions in 2011 alone. Of those crashes, 835 proved fatal with 918 persons being killed. While the number of fatal crashes pales in comparison to the total number of accidents, there were still over 900 people killed in Illinois which is about 17 people every week.

When an innocent person loses their live to the negligence of another, there is nothing that can fully repair the damage and make the victim's family whole again. The best that we can do is seek a financial recovery for the losses suffered by the victim's family through a civil claim. This is allowed by the law to help cover some of the costs and losses experienced in accidents like this.

In a civil claim, and injured person or the surviving family of a deceased victim can bring a claim against a negligent driver for damages, including medical bills, pain and suffering, disfigurement, lost wages, and lost companionship. A personal injury attorney can help assist with this civil claim and seek the compensation that is deserved based on the accident and the resulting injuries.

If you have been hurt in an accident or if a loved one has been killed, call the Chicago car accident attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free, no obligation telephone consultation. The biker was reportedly on Inner Lake Shore Drive near the intersection with Grace Street on the north side of Chicago when he fell from his bike and was then struck by a car.

Officials have not specified the exact location of the crash other than that it occurred in the 3800 block near Grace, but it could be unclear since the intersection with Sheridan is mere feet to the north, which creates an elongated intersection in the area that serve three separate streets. The interchange can be confusing to drivers who are unfamiliar with the area and there have been crashes there in the past.

It is not yet known what caused the motorcyclist to fall off his bike or the car to hit the man and police have not yet said whether any drivers will be charged with crimes in this case.

Biking in Illinois is more popular than many realize. In fact, motorcycles account for about 4 percent of all registered vehicles in the state, meaning that one in 25 vehicles is a motorcycle. This number has been increasing steadily through the last 20 years as gas continues to climb and traffic jams continue to cause headaches in the city. Though they account for only 4 percent of all vehicles, motorcyclists made up 15.8 percent of all fatalities in Illinois in 2011. Part of the reasoning behind the disproportionate number of fatalities is that motorcyclists have very little to protect them if they are involved in a crash.

Illinois does not require motorcyclists to wear helmets when they ride and other safety gear, like leather jackets, gloves, and boots, is similarly not required. Without the protective steel surrounding them like they would have in a car and without a helmet, there is little to absorb the impact of a collision other than the biker's body.

Even when a motorcyclist does everything right, he can still be a victim of an accident. Too often, cars fail to look out for bikers or drive in a manner that threatens the safety of a motorcyclist. This can lead to a collision which can leave a biker with serious or even fatal injuries.

At Abels & Annes, P.C., we have dedicated our lives to representing the rights of those injured in accidents due to the negligence of another. We know how broad of an impact an accident can have on a biker's life, from the injuries the biker sustains to an inability to work or earn a living, even to the effects felt by the biker's family. That is why we make it our business to fight for what is right and to get a recovery that our clients' deserve.

If you have been hurt in a bike accident, call the Chicago motorcycle accident attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. and let us provide you with a free case consultation. As he fled, he caused a second collision just two blocks away, seriously injuring himself and up to five others in the Park Manor neighborhood.

A police officer who was filling his gas tank near Indiana Avenue and Marquette Road and saw a car driven by a man rear-end another vehicle. It is believed the driver was on his cell phone at the time of the impact. Both cars pulled over after the impact and the officer responded, initially talking to the car that was struck. When the officer began to walk to the at-fault vehicle that caused the rear-end crash, the driver took off from the scene. He tried to drive west on 71st Street over the Dan Ryan Expressway but he hit a minivan that was trying to turn left onto State Street.

The first crash resulted in damage only to the front vehicle which had a man and woman inside at the time of impact. They witnessed the second crash and said that an individual from the minivan was ejected as a result of the collision.

Police have said that the at-fault driver was in serious-to-critical condition after the accident and that four people inside the van were also hurt. Three people were taken from the scene to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition and three others were taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center where their conditions were not immediately known.

The Chicago Police Department has not yet stated whether the driver who caused both collisions will face any civil or criminal charges.

Assuming this early information is all correct, the at-fault driver in these accidents committed several negligent acts. Initially he drove while on his cell phone. Cell phones are a significant distraction to drivers and are responsible for many crashes. In addition, using a cell phone without a hands-free device is a violation of local laws in many areas, though it is unclear how this driver was using his phone at the time of the first crash. In addition to driving while distracted, this driver fled the scene of a collision without speaking to police or providing identification information. What was only a minor collision with a small amount of property damage instead became a crime when the driver fled the scene and seriously injured several others. Finally it appears that the driver failed to yield the right-of-way to the minivan and thus caused the second collision. Though not all the details are yet known, collisions that eject one or more passengers often have a significant force, meaning that the car or the van or both could have been traveling at a fast speed.

If you have been injured by a driver who was negligent, including a driver on his cell phone, a hit-and-run driver, or even a driver who fails to yield to you, there may be a claim available for your injuries. The 22-year-old Blue Island resident has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence and failure to stop after an accident causing personal injury or death.

A 61-year-old man who was visiting Tinley Park from India was crossing 159th Street southbound at 80th Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. when he was hit and killed by a black pickup truck. The truck fled the scene but left evidence including his license plate behind, a key element that helped police make an arrest.

A witness described the victim as laying in the middle of the road, a shoe and a bag he was carrying several feet away from his body and said the impact sounded like a large boom. A relative described the victim as "a very fun loving person" who "liked to travel." Reportedly, he was a mayor and a social worker in India in his local municipality.

The charges against the driver in this case are significant and if convicted, could result in a long incarceration stint, depending on the driver's prior history and other extenuating or aggravating factors. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol places a defendant at an immediate risk for a suspended license and fines, if convicted, and the consequences can be more severe.

In America, someone is killed as the result of a drunk driver every 51 minutes. This adds up to over 10,000 deaths at the hands of drunk drivers every year. None of these deaths are necessary and all are preventable by simply not driving after drinking. There are numerous alternatives in Illinois including public transportation, taxis, designated drivers, or even walking. But getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol is reckless and often results in injuries or death of innocent bystanders, as it did in this case.

Driving under the influence is a crime that this driver has been accused of, and leaving the scene of an accident is also a crime. Here, the driver allegedly failed to stop to render aid, failed to wait for the police to respond, did not provide any of his identification information, and did not remain at the scene after the crash. This is a felony offense in Illinois unless the driver needed to seek immediate medical attention, and there is no indication that the driver was hurt in this accident. This charge alone, separate from the DUI charge, may result in jail time if the driver is convicted.

These penalties are harsh because the behavior they are designed to address is so extreme and so hazardous and often deadly. If you have been involved in a collision caused by a driver under the influence or by a driver who fled the scene, you may have a claim for any injuries you sustained.

At Abels & Annes, P.C., we are Illinois hit-and-run injury lawyers who know how to deal with insurance companies and difficult defendants. The Honda struck a southbound pickup truck near 84th Street and caused a violent impact that pushed the pickup truck into a concrete barrier.

The driver of the pickup truck was injured and was treated at South Shore Hospital and later discharged. In addition to the driver, two passengers were in the Honda and all were injured and treated at various hospitals with the driver reportedly suffering a broken arm. A female passenger has been described as "gravely injured" and it is not clear whether she will survive.

It is not yet clear what caused the Honda driver to travel in the wrong direction but police say the driver will be issued citations.

Though it is not clear if alcohol was involved, alcohol is a common factor in many of the wrong-way collisions that occur in the United States every year. A driver under the influence is less aware of other motorists, including the direction they are traveling, and statistically pay less attention to road signs, making it easier to drive against traffic without realizing it.

Wrong-way collisions are often very violent and severe because each vehicle is traveling in the opposite direction, making the force of the impact large. This type of collision is also likely to produce injuries to the drivers and passengers of both vehicles.

Wrong-way collisions can often occur when a driver is inattentive or just not paying attention. Distraction may come from inside the car or out and can include things like phone conversations, texting, other passengers, children, arguments, the radio, checking email, and even a GPS system. When a driver is distracted, the driver is a danger to those on the road and is more likely to cause an accident than if he was focused and attentive on the road.

Whether they are caused by alcohol, distraction, or something else, wrong-way collisions are dangerous and often deadly, and the person injured or killed is often not the distracted driver. In addition to serious criminal charges, a distracted driver may also face civil claims for the injuries caused in a collision. Both people in another vehicle and passengers in the distracted driver's vehicle may be able to bring a claim if they are injured in a wrong-way crash.

If you have been injured as the result of a wrong-way collision, please contact the attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. for a free, no-obligation consultation. The current minimum liability limits are $20,000 per person and $40,000 per occurrence and are set to be raised to $25,000 per person and $50,000 per occurrence.

Liability insurance is mandatory for all Illinois drivers and it provides coverage in the event that a driver causes injuries to another person, either in another vehicle, a bicyclist, a pedestrian, or even a passenger in the driver's own vehicle. The State of Illinois allows motorists to select the amount of liability insurance they carry but each driver is required to have the minimum liability insurance of $20,000/$40,000. This means that if a driver has the minimum insurance required and is at fault in an accident, any single person who is injured can collect up to $20,000 from the driver's insurance company but that the insurance company is only liable for up to $40,000 in injury damages, regardless of how many people are injured.

If this new law takes effect, as it is expected to do, those drivers who elect to carry the minimum coverage will now have a little extra insurance on their side while those who are injured in auto accidents will have the potential for a greater recovery for their losses. Though the cost of medical care has skyrocketed in the last decades, the level of required liability insurance has not increased in 24 years, meaning that the insurance limits have not kept pace with inflation or rising costs associated with collisions.

While this increase will be great for Illinois citizens, it is not a large enough increase to guarantee protection in the event of a collision. The truth is that car accidents regularly cause serious, debilitating injuries and even death, and that in these cases a mere $25,000 does not come close to fully compensating an injured victim or the victim's family. Often a simple visit to the emergency room by ambulance after a collision can cost in excess of that limit which would leave no money available for follow up treatment, including surgeries, therapy, or rehabilitation procedures that a victim needs.

Since the mandatory minimum liability insurance limits are so low in the state and since the anticipated increase is so minor, it is important for all drivers to be aware of the risks that come with limited insurance and take steps to protect themselves. The best way to make sure you are protected is to get an insurance policy with a provision known as uninsured/underinsured coverage. This is a type of automobile insurance coverage that applies when you are injured by a driver without insurance or by a driver who cannot be identified because he fled the scene of the collision. Importantly it also provides excess coverage in a case where you are hurt by a driver who has insurance but not enough to fully compensate you. In this type of case, like where a driver has low or minimum insurance, a knowledgeable attorney can help you first recover against the at-fault driver and then make an additional, and often much larger, recovery on your behalf through your own insurance company.

You cannot control the behavior of other drivers or ensure that every other driver has great insurance so to protect yourself, you should purchase insurance from a reliable company and buy appropriate coverage, including uninsured/underinsured insurance. If you have been involved in an accident with a driver who did not have insurance or did not have enough insurance, you may still have a claim for your losses, including any medical bills you incurred.

Call the Illinois car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free consultation regarding your accident, your injuries, and your rights. The incident occurred last June in Naperville, Illinois and claimed the life of an innocent motorcyclist.

Not only was the at-fault driver under the influence of marijuana, he was also engaged in a road-rage incident that further caused him to driver recklessly and irresponsibly, making him a danger to himself and everyone on the road. The driver reportedly got into an argument with three teenagers in another car while stopped at a traffic light. He then attempted to chase down the teenagers and drove aggressively while doing so. As he was chasing the teens, the driver failed to exercise caution and collided with and killed a motorcyclist, who was a resident of Lombard and who died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

After the collision, the driver fled the scene but was later found by police officers who charged the man with aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. The driver was found guilty of both charges in March and was just sentenced this week. In addition, he was also charged with aggravated reckless driving and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, obstructing an officer, and failing to yield while turning left.

This crash was preventable and did not need to happen. Unfortunately the driver in this case got behind the wheel when he was unfit to do so and he should never have been driving that day. In addition to driving under the influence, the man engaged in a situation with another vehicle that led to road-rage and a fatal collision with an innocent biker. And if those two factors alone weren't enough, the driver fled the scene of the crash, potentially delaying any chance the victim would have had to receive medical care or to speak with police, as he was required to do by law.

Any one of those behaviors can cause a crash but once they were combined, it is no surprise that the outcome was fatal in this case.

Road-rage is much more prevalent than realized in Illinois and it occurs daily. Some estimate that road-rage is a factor in more than 50 percent of the collisions that occur every year. Still, it is often overlooked as a serious problem facing all drivers.

Anyone can get irritated or annoyed while driving, particularly at the behavior of another driver. Though frustration may occur, it is never acceptable to let that anger accelerate to the point of road-rage. Road-rage is a series of risky actions or behaviors while driving that leads to an assault by one driver against another person, either with a motor vehicle or without one. It is also important to realize that road-rage is considered a criminal offense and not merely a traffic violation, meaning that drivers who exercise road-rage could face jail time even without causing a collision or hurting anyone.

The best way to avoid road-rage is to not rush to your location, try to remain calm while driving, and to accept that you cannot control the way other drivers drive. That being said, even the most careful and safest driver can be a victim of road-rage at any moment. The results are sometimes minor and may not even be an injury, but as this case demonstrates, the results all too often can be fatal.

If you have been a victim of road-rage, you have a right to bring a civil case against the person responsible for your injuries. You may be able to make a claim for any losses you sustained or any damages you incurred, including injuries and medical bills. Call the road-rage injury lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free telephone consultation regarding your case. That's because Operation Prom Night made an appearance this week at the high school and presented a simulated prom night crash caused by a drunk student.

Several students acted as prom-goers dressed in formal wear with first responders present from the local fire department. A female student was splashed with fake blood and laying across the hood of a significantly damaged vehicle.

The purpose of Operation Prom Night is to make students realize how dangerous and potentially deadly it can be to drink and drive or to drive after taking drugs. While the scene may have been graphic in an effort to make a point, many people thought the program was well done and effective.

In Illinois, teenagers and people under the age of 21 are not allowed to have any alcohol in their system when they drive while it is illegal for anyone to drive under the influence of drugs. Special occasions, including prom, often cause a spike in teenage drinking as well as teenage drinking and driving so organizers feel it is important to highlight the dangers before these temptations arise.

Car crashes continue to be the biggest cause of death among U.S. teenagers each year, and though highway deaths have declined lately, too many teenagers continue to die in collisions. Teenagers and other young drivers are at a higher risk of crashes to begin with due to a lack of developed driving skills, lack of experience, and an inability to anticipate dangerous conditions that more experienced drivers tend to possess. Adding drugs or alcohol to the mix slows a teenager's ability to make decisions and slows reaction time, making crashes even more likely. In fact, in 2008, one in seven people killed in a drunk driving accident was under age 21 and therefore not even old enough to legally drink.

It is unclear whether Operation Prom Night will reduce drinking and driving in Lake Zurich this year but organizers hope that parents will reinforce the lessons taught by speaking with their teens at home, expressing the dangers of drinking and driving, and coming up with alternate plans, like having a safe ride available, in case a teen finds themselves in a dangerous situation.

Drunk driving accidents are preventable and unnecessary but unfortunately they occur every day in Illinois, often with tragic results. No one wants to see a young person injured, especially when celebrating a major milestone in life like prom, and an accident caused by alcohol seems especially cruel. If you have a teenager who will be attending prom, make sure to discuss safety with them first. From there, it could determine the driver, a resident of New Jersey, had his license suspended last year for insurance-related issues after failing to make three mandatory payments to a New Jersey court. His license was also suspended briefly in 2002 for falling behind on child support.

The crash occurred in Vandalia, Illinois on I-70. Some reports indicate that the van was on the highway while others have stated that the van was on a highway ramp but it is clear that the driver lost control of the vehicle which flipped and rolled over several times. Eleven people were in the van at the time and nine of them were ejected as the van rolled. Five of the passengers died.

The van was reportedly traveling from California back to New Jersey after a week-long ministry gathering out west when the Illinois crash occurred. The names of all the victims have not yet been released but it has been learned that the driver as well as at least one of the passengers had criminal pasts, including incarceration, for crimes unrelated to this incident.

The victims are believed to have been members of Victory Outreach International, a religious group that attempts to help people take control of their lives as well as reaching out to at-risk groups. With over 700 churches world-wide, Victory Outreach is also known for providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation services to those in need.

Though the driver in this accident was cited for improper lane usage and driving on a suspended license, it is possible that he could be charged with additional traffic and possibly criminal offenses once the cause of the crash is determined.

In addition to any citations issued by the Illinois State Police Department, the driver of the van may face civil claims or lawsuits by the passengers that were injured or by the families of those who were killed. The civil claims may be made for things like injuries, medical bills, loss of earnings, pain and suffering, and wrongful death. It may also be possible that claims could be brought against the religious group that the driver belonged to, especially if the group owned the van or if it provided the transportation for the victims to and from California.

Large passenger vehicles like the one in this case often mean that crashes can result in serious or fatal injuries. Passengers do not use seat belts in larger vehicles as often as they do in passenger cars creating a higher risk of ejection and serious injuries in the event of a collision.

If you have been injured in a car crash, call the Illinois car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a free telephone consultation. It appears that Blaylock was traveling in one direction and lost control of his Cadillac Escalade, crossed a center median, and entered the highway going the other direction. Blaylock's SUV collided head-on with a van in a violent collision. A 43-year-old female front seat passenger in the van was killed in the crash and Blaylock was critically injured. Emergency medical technicians transported Blaylock by air ambulance to an area hospital where he was placed on life support for several hours.

Following surgery for a broken ankle, Blaylock is in critical condition and reportedly is no longer on life support. However he is currently being sedated by his physicians. Once he is able to speak, police intend to interview him about the collision and may level additional charges against Blaylock, including a potential charge for vehicular homicide. So far, Blaylock has been charged with driving on a suspended license and failing to stay within his lane of traffic.

The family of Mookie Blaylock have reported that he suffers from seizures and has received medical treatment for them and recently had an episode where paramedics had to be called to his home during one of Blaylock's seizures. It is not clear whether doctors had given him any instructions regarding his ability to drive. Reports indicate that an arrest warrant was recently issued in Spalding County, Georgia for Blaylock on charges of driving under the influence and a drug charge though it does not appear that these prior charges had anything to do with the current accident.

Head-on collisions of the type involved in this accident are often violent and account for a disproportionate number of fatalities each year. Though head-on collisions account for only two percent of all crashes, they are responsible for nearly 10 percent of all fatalities. One of the reasons they are so deadly is that these collisions often occur when one driver fails to stay within his own lane and crosses a center line or median. Statistically this results in serious collisions most often on roads with high rates of speeds, like rural highways or other areas with light traffic.

In addition to the pending traffic violations and possible criminal charges, Blaylock may face a civil suit for the damages he caused to the victim and her husband who was reported driving the van and was injured in the crash. These civil suits may include claims for the injuries caused by Blaylock's negligence and for the loss of the victim's life.

If you have been injured in a head-on collision, you may have a claim for your damages against the driver responsible for your injuries. The driver of the vehicle was legally drunk and under the influence of alcohol when she crashed her car in Elk Grove Village in the early morning hours, backing up traffic and causing delays for several hours.

It now appears that the woman was driving a minivan northbound on I-290 near Biesterfield Road when she lost control. The van veered across all lanes of traffic before striking a poll and coming to a stop where the car caught fire. The fire spread rapidly and engulfed the entire vehicle within minutes in a hot and intense burn.

Another driver saw the crash and stopped to help because he believed it to be the appropriate thing to do. Ironically, this Good Samaritan had just seen the movie Fast & Furious 6, a theatrical release known for its car racing, crashes, and action stunts. As the Good Samaritan approached the car, he noticed the driver was still inside and that she was obviously injured. Her face was cut and bleeding and she seemed to be searching for something within her vehicle. After confirming that there were no other people inside the minivan, the Good Samaritan told the female driver that her vehicle was on fire and that she needed to get out, immediately, because he feared the fire spreading or the vehicle exploding.

The injured driver exited her vehicle and emergency reponders provided her with transportation to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries. Authorities stayed at the scene to put out the fire and investigate the crash, including why it occurred, and in combination with other information, they came to the conclusion that the woman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. She was arrested and cited with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, a crime in the state of Illinois.

Drunk driving is dangerous and often deadly to motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists in Illinois and along the Illinois roadways. A drunk driver is more likely to ignore hazards in the road than a sober driver, weave in and out of lanes of traffic, and drive at erratic speeds, all of which can lead to an accident that causes injuries.

There are tough traffic and criminal penalties for drivers under the influence but what some people do not realize is that in many instances, there may also be a civil case against a drunk driver who causes injuries. In a civil case, a person may bring a financial claim for injuries and damages they sustained as the result of the drunk driver, including medical bills and lost wages.

Each case is different and each set of facts are unique so if you have been injured in an accident with a drunk driver, you should contact an attorney to see if you have a claim. The drunk driving injury lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. offer a free telephone consultation with no obligation to anyone injured in a drunk driving collision. They all occurred on the same block of the village's downtown district, one in March and two other similar accidents occurred in February.

This accident involved a Clarendon Hills woman attempting to park her 2007 Mercedes ML500 along South Washington Street. Apparently, she hit the accelerator instead of the brake, sending her car into a vacant building that formerly housed the restaurant Zak's Place. The woman was not injured, but was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

The two other accidents, which as previously mentioned occurred within the same street block, occurred on February 21 and February 23, when the Steinway Piano Gallery was struck twice by vehicles on separate occasions.

In the first accident, which took place on February 21, a man was trying to park his car into one of the angled spaces, but instead drove onto the curb and struck the building. Luckily, the only damage was a few fallen bricks. The second accident, which was on February 23, caused substantially more damage. "We heard a loud crash, and the doors were broken through and there was glass everywhere," said Diane Duncan, sales manager at the store. Apparently the driver came to a stop within just a few feet of some of the store's pianos. This accident was also the result of a driver attempting to park, but accidentally jumping the curb and hitting the accelerator.

Authorities have begun to discuss whether some sort of obstacle, such as a large planter box, might be the solution to these sorts of accidents. It may be the case that these accidents are just a highly unlikely coincidence. While there has been a mention of drivers averaging 65 years of age, there has also been an acknowledgement that it is not necessarily an age correlated with decreased driving abilities. Based on the limited information presented, it remains unclear whether perhaps all the vehicles involved were SUVs, or perhaps the curb in that area is lower or less sloped compared with other curbs, providing two additional potential explanations.

It is very fortunate that no one was hurt in any of these accidents, whether pedestrians or people who may have happened to be inside of the storefronts. Individuals who have been hurt in a single-car crash, which can be the result of a distracted or impaired motorist, may be entitled to receive compensation for any potential injuries that occur. In certain situations, an automobile a manufacturer, a city, and others may be held additionally responsible for the injuries that are a result of a one-vehicle collision.

Personal injury lawyers at our office have worked on similar cases over the years where innocent bystanders were actually injured. In one case, our client was hurt when an elderly motorist lost control of his vehicle and drove through the front of a fast food restaurant in downtown Chicago. In another accident, an elderly woman lost control and crashed into a home in the suburbs, injuring the homeowner inside.

If you were injured through no fault of your own in any traffic accident, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages. Potential recoveries include reimbursement for medical bills, any required physical therapy, and damages for pain and suffering, disability, lost wages and benefits, and more. Additionally, since Illinois is a comparative negligence accident state, even if you may have been somehow partially at fault for the harm you received, you may still be able to recover for a percentage of the harm sustained. If you lost a loved one in an unfortunate single car accident like this one, you may also be entitled to recover for wrongful death. If you have questions about your right to recovery after an injury or accident, you should contact a skilled car crash attorney as soon as you are able.

If you were harmed or a family member was killed in a single-vehicle or other automobile collision, please call the experienced traffic accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. at (312) 924-7575 today. When asked by police officers, the woman informed them that she had been celebrating earlier in the evening because she got her driver's licence back after a conviction for driving under the influence last fall.

The woman was pulled over for speeding but later tests revealed her blood alcohol content to be 0.155, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08. She is facing charges for felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and may face incarceration as a result.

The responding officer ran a check on the woman's license and learned that it was still suspended from her prior conviction, despite her claims to the contrary. As part of her prior sentence, a breath-alcohol ignition interlock device was reportedly installed in her car. The device requires a driver to exhale into a collection tube before the car can be started. If the presence of alcohol is detected on the driver's breath, the vehicle will not start. However in this case, it appears the woman was driving someone else's car that did not have a breath-alcohol ignition interlock device installed, allowing her to drive even with her high blood alcohol content.

Illinois law presumes that any driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher is driving under the influence of alcohol and is impaired. This is the level that applies to the general population though specific types of drivers may face more stringent requirements. For example, drivers under the age of 21 and bus drivers are not allowed any alcohol in their system when driving while the limit for commercial drivers is a blood alcohol content of 0.04. According to the Illinois Secretary of State, the average driver arrested for driving under the influence is male, 34 years old, arrested between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. on a weekend, and possesses a blood alcohol content of 0.16 - twice the legal limit.

Drunk drivers are less aware of their surroundings and have slower reaction times, making them a danger to all drivers on the roads. They can be responsible for collisions with other vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, or even pedestrians that may result in injuries or death. If you have been injured by a driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs, call the Illinois drunk driving injury attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. today for a consultation regarding your case. You may have a claim for your personal injuries and any lost wages you sustained as a result of the collision. Witnesses reported that the sound of metal crashing could be heard from at least a mile away. According to one witness, a white van failed to stop at a stop sign, and hit a sedan, causing another van to crash into the white van. A nearby shopkeeper who had witnessed the scene expressed her concern that the sedan would have been headed for her business if it hadn't been able to correct its trajectory.

Seven individuals were sent to local hospitals for treatment. Three adults were in fair to serious condition, while four children were determined to be in good condition.

Based on what has been reported so far, this is at least the second accident in recent weeks that was caused by a driver failing to stop at a stop sign.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a study of five busy intersections over a period of several months found that, on average, a driver ran a red light every 20 minutes at each intersection. Furthermore, during peak travel times, red light running was even more frequent. An analysis of red light violation data from 19 intersections in four states found that 1,775 violations occurred over 554 hours, which resulted in an overall violation rate of 3.2 per hour, per intersection. While stoplight running is somewhat different than running a stop sign, logically the failure to yield to the traffic signals, as well as the potential for causing devastating car accidents, is the same.

Another IIHS study, this time regarding urban crashes, found that those involving drivers who ran red lights, stop signs and other traffic controls were actually the most common reason for this type of crash in 22% of cases. Regarding car accidents where drivers disobeyed traffic controls, such as the one in this report, injuries resulted 39% of the time.

The driver who initially failed to stop is most likely liable for all of the damages that his action cost. This includes the damage to the two other vehicles reported in the crash, as well as the medical expenses of the seven individuals that were injured. Furthermore, even the passengers in the car of the driver who ran the stop sign may have potential claims against the driver for putting them into harms way, and any potential injuries they may have suffered. Financial recovery is not limited solely to the medical expenses incurred in the emergency room or ambulance following treatment. Additional possible recoveries include the cost of any resulting physical or other therapy, lost wages or disability incurred at work, and in some cases pain and suffering. A qualified car accident attorney can further inform you regarding your legal rights and potential claims against a negligent driver.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident that resulted in injury, or if a family member was killed because another driver disobeyed a traffic signal, please contact the Chicago car accident lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. in order to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation regarding your case. According to authorities, the four vehicles were all traveling northbound on LaGrange Road, and crashed into each other near 107th Street.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, but authorities described it as a "bumper-to-bumper" crash. The Cook County sheriff's police towed the vehicles away, and are currently conducting an investigation. The nearby surrounding area is a forest preserve.

Car crashes in and around the Chicago area are probably more common than you may think. According to statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation, based on data collected in 2011, there were:
281,788 crashes, which resulted in
918 deaths, and
84,172 injuries
A commonly reported statement used to ease the minds of anxious flyers, is the fact that you are more likely to die in a car accident than in a plane crash. In Illinois, and in many-- if not all-- states across the country, car accidents remain the leading killer of 15-24 year olds. Comparing the numbers against time, an average of one person dies every ten hours in a car accident within our state, and someone is injured in a vehicle accident approximately every six and a half minutes.

Obtaining help from a qualified and experienced car accident lawyer, especially when an injury has happened, is critical. If your injury causes you to delay too long, or if you fail to fully understand what you are entitled to, you may waive your rights. Also, in some cases, soft tissue damage may not fully manifest itself in full blown injuries until months later. This is especially true for neck and back injuries. If you settle too quickly, you may potentially forego receiving compensation for things like physical therapy reimbursements that may occur after the hasty settlement has been finalized.

Additionally, important evidence may be forgotten, damaged, or destroyed. Your attorney can bear the burden of handling the various components to a successful case, so that you can focus on healing. Hiring an attorney at the outset insures that nothing has been overlooked, allowing you the ability to not have to worry about the legal issues and deadlines related to your claim.

If you have been in a car accident and suffered an injury, or someone you love has been injured or killed in a vehicle accident, contact the Illinois car accident attorneys at Abels & Annes. At least one witness at the scene of the crash originally indicated the bus driver ran a red light, but officials say that witnesses gave conflicting statements thereafter regarding the cause of the collision.

On April 5, the school bus collided with two SUVs at the intersection of Highway 173 and Kilbourne Road, resulting in the death of one of the SUV drivers. A toxicology report on the victim showed what is believed to be prescription drugs in the SUV driver's system at the time of the crash, adding speculation as to the cause of the collision.

There were 35 children on board the bus that morning which was traveling to Newport Elementary School in Wadsworth. The collision demolished one of the SUVs, caused significant damage to the other, and caused the school bus to roll on its side. In all, 37 people were injured.

In most collisions, people who are injured by the negligence of another driver have a right to bring a claim against at-fault driver's insurance. The claim may be made to cover things like medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. If the deceased driver of the SUV is determined to be at-fault in this crash, the adults and students on the bus may be able to bring claims against the SUV driver's insurance.

Most individual automobile insurance policies do not have limits high enough to cover all of the people injured in this collision. Illinois law requires drivers to have a minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per collision in insurance coverage though drivers can carry a greater amount. Even with a large insurance policy, there may not be enough money to cover the damages caused by a crash.

If your damages are greater than the negligent driver's insurance, you may also have an underinsured motorist claim. In this type of claim, your own insurance company will "step into the shoes" of the at-fault driver and provide another source of potential monetary compensation for your claim.

Many people have private insurance policies that provide underinsured motorist coverage in case of a crash with significant injuries and a small insurance policy. In the case of the crash between the school bus and the SUV, the children on board the school bus may be covered by an underinsured provision in their parents' policy and/or an underinsured provision in the policy covering the school bus. Some buses provide this type of coverage to their passengers, including PACE, while other buses, like the CTA, do not. It depends on the language of the insurance policy at issue.

If your child has been injured while riding on a school bus, you may have a claim on behalf of your child against the at-fault driver as well as a possible underinsured motorist claim. The knowledgeable school bus crash lawyers at Abels & Annes, P.C. are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to discuss your child's injuries.
