Described as a "motorbike-car" hybrid, the Lit C-1 two wheeler uses a set of futuristic electronic gyroscopes to ensure it remains upright and balanced, similar to the technology used by Segway scooters and the recent Honda UNI-CUB.

A group of scientists have announced that within a few years it may be possible to sell a two-wheeled vehicle that can't tip over.

The technology allows drivers to sit and use a steering wheel, as in a car, but allows the C-1 to stay perfectly balanced, even at slow speeds or a standstill.

The secret to the balance are the gyroscopes under the floor, which spin rapidly in response to electronic sensors to keep the vehicle balanced at all times -- even, says Lit, if the vehicle is involved in a collision.

Gyroscopes, which harness the unique propensity of a spinning flywheel to stay upright, have been used for some time for stabilization, including on aircraft and on cruise ships to reduce roll caused by waves.

However, this will be one of the most unique applications to date, potentially enabling drivers to switch to smaller vehicles which offer the benefits of a bike with the comparative safety of a car.

The model can even cope with some luggage and an extra passenger, says Lit, although it's likely to involve some considerable acrobatics from the rear passenger given the small size of the device.

The C-1 uses electric drive and offers a battery pack capable of 200 miles (321 km/h) from a single charge, as well as reaching a top speed of over 120 mph (193 km/h) -- far faster than most electric cars available on the market today.

The manufacturer says that it could be available in showrooms by the end of 2014 -- it's already offering preorders on the website from $250, although the final price of the vehicle is unclear.

The multi-millionaire, who gets 97 Octane fuel from Mumbai for his prized possession - the Lamborghini Gallardo SE - has found a way to avoid mass attention. He drives his cars mostly late in the night.

Just like Sachin Tendulkar. The Little Master drives his Ferrari 360 Modena (gifted to him by Ferrari for equalling Sir Don Bradman's record of 29 centuries) either on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway or in Mumbai's Bandra, but only after mid-night.

Notwithstanding the constraint of mid-night driving due to unwanted attention and India's inadequate roads, the number of people willing to buy these marquee brands is growing at a fast pace - fast enough for at least three legendary European sports car manufacturers - Ferrari, Bugatti and the James Bond-favourite Aston Martin - to launch their speed-and-thrill machines in the country by the end of this year.

The first off the block will be the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4, with a top speed of 431 kms per hour.

According to Delhi-based Exclusive Motors, which will be officially importing Bugatti cars in India, the launch of the Veyron model is scheduled for October-end.

The price of the model will be disclosed close to the launch, but sources say that the Veyron will cost at least three times that of the Maybach luxury saloon, which with a price tag of 5.5 crore ( 55 million) is currently the costliest car sold in the country.

Exclusive Motors, whose showroom is located at the plush Ashoka Hotel at New Delhi's Chanakyapuri, presently imports other Volkswagen brands including Lamborghini and Bentley.

Soon after buying the brand name in 1998, Volkswagen founded Bugatti Automobile SAS in the very next year.

Over the last decade, it has rolled out a number of models including Bugatti EB 118, EB 218 and Bugatti 18.3 Chiron.

In 2004, it launched the two-door super sports car Veyron 16.4, named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a Bugatti Type 57 in 1939.

The Veyron debuted in China and Russia in 2007. The carmaker recently unveiled the Bugatti Galibier 16C concept, which will be launched globally by 2013.

The Galibier, touted as the most powerful four-door automobile in the world, will be far more expensive than the Veyron, but Indian consumers will have to wait a little longer for that.

Bugatti is, however, racing against time in India, as legendary British marquee, Aston Martin, will also step into the country with its entire range of supercars by the year-end.

Its models, the V8 Vantage, DB9, Rapide and DBS, could set you back by close to 3 crore ( 30 million), excluding the registration and insurance.

The car, which many Indians have seen only in James Bond movies, will be distributed by Mumbai-based Infinity Cars, which distributes BMW cars in India.

Aston Martin was acquired by racing mogul David Richards and Kuwaiti companies Investment Dar and Adeem Investment from Ford in 2007, for $925 million.

The most awaited of them all will of course be the launch of Ferrari by the end of this year.

Though the Italy-based company, which is the winner of multiple Formula One World Constructors' Championships, is yet to announce the details of its India journey, Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo told BBC News that the car would be entering India by the end of this year, in association with Tata Motors.

However, many say appointing dealers at such a fast pace may not be possible and that the launch would happen only next year.

Details regarding the model launch are yet to be finalised but Ferrari has models such as the 612 Scaglietti, 599 GTB, 599 GTO in the V12 engine range and the 458 Italia and the California(Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata drives one) in the V8 engine range.

All the models are expected to be priced above 2 crore ( 20 million).

Though many dealers also say it's no longer viable for them to import completely built vehicles of high-end cars because of the high cost involved in homologation and the small number of sales, imports continue, given Indian consumers' growing liking to luxury products and the country's high economic growth rate.

After all, India is the world's second fastest growing car market, and is expected to see premium car sales crossing the 10,000 mark this year itself.

That view is endorsed by even Rolls-Royce, which feels that the market for its super-luxury cars is picking up dramatically across Asia, particularly India and China, as the effects of the global financial crisis recede.

Rolls-Royce Asia-Pacific regional chief Colin Kelly says in Asia, China will contribute half of the unit sales this year while India, which is becoming an increasingly key market, will account for 10 to 12 per cent.

Rolls-Royce unveiled its Ghost model, the automaker's new lower-cost saloon car, in India recently.

The company expects to sell 50 to 60 Ghosts (priced at 2.5 crore or 25 million) and 15 Phantoms (priced upwards of 3.5 crore or 35 million) in India by the year-end.

That's the kind of optimism that would fuel the Indian hopes of the makers of Bugatti, Ferrari and Aston Martin.

EN-V, which is short for Electric Networked-Vehicle, maintains the core principle of personal mobility – freedom – while helping remove the motor vehicle from the environmental debate and redefining design leadership.

EN-V is a two-seat electric vehicle that was designed to alleviate concerns surrounding traffic congestion, parking availability, air quality and affordability for tomorrow’s cities.

EN-V is propelled by electric motors in each of its two driving-mode wheels. Dynamic stabilization technology empowers EN-V, giving it the unique ability to carry two passengers and light cargo in a footprint that’s about a third of a traditional vehicle.

It can literally “turn on a dime” within its own operating envelope. In addition, everything in EN-V is drive-by-wire, supporting its ability to operate autonomously or under manual control. The motors not only provide power for acceleration, but also bring the vehicle to a stop.

Power for the motors is provided by lithium-ion batteries that produce zero emissions. Recharging can occur from a conventional wall outlet using standard household power, allowing EN-V to travel at least 40 kilometers on a single charge.

EN-V can also improve the efficiency of the public electric infrastructure since the vehicle can communicate with the electric grid to determine the best time to recharge based on overall usage.

Its autonomous operating capability offers the promise of reducing traffic congestion by allowing EN-V to automatically select the fastest route based on real-time traffic information.

The concept also leverages wireless communications to enable a “social network” that can be used by drivers and occupants to communicate with friends or business associates while on the go.

This combination of sensing technology, wireless communication and GPS-based navigation establishes a technology foundation, pieces of which could migrate from the EN-V concept and potentially lead the way to future advanced vehicle safety systems.

The ability to communicate with other vehicles and with the infrastructure could dramatically reduce the number of vehicle accidents.

Using vehicle-based sensor and camera systems, EN-V can “sense” what’s around it, allowing the vehicle to react quickly to obstacles or changes in driving conditions. For example, if a pedestrian steps out in front of the vehicle, EN-V will decelerate to a slower and safer speed and stop sooner than today’s vehicles.

GM has been a leader in developing autonomous vehicle technology, having worked alongside students and faculty at Carnegie Mellon University in the U.S. city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This collaboration created “The Boss” Chevrolet Tahoe, which brought autonomous vehicle operation to life in 2007.

EN-V takes the lessons learned in “The Boss” and offers mobility to people who could not otherwise operate a vehicle.

While EN-V leads the way in terms of efficiency and technology, it also sets a new benchmark for vehicle design. For its debut, GM had design teams around the world provide their vision of what future mobility will look like.

Each EN-V has a unique design theme to showcase the flexibility of the propulsion platform. The design gives each EN-V its own personality, with a unique opening, elegant interior and innovative color, lighting and seat technology.

The body and canopy of EN-V are constructed from carbon fiber, custom-tinted Lexan and acrylic, materials that are more commonly used in race cars, military airplanes and spacecraft because of their strength and lightweight characteristics.

The ability to work with such innovative materials provided a learning opportunity for GM’s design teams to study the feasibility of future traditional automotive applications.

Even as the world's top airlines battle the economic downturn and rising fuel prices, Scoot is determined about changing the way people travel long distance.

Scoot Pte Ltd. is a low-cost long-haul airline which was announced by parent company Singapore Airlines in May 2011. It was subsequently announced on 1 November 2011 that it will be named "Scoot".

It is a budget carrier claiming it will offer tickets up to 40 percent cheaper than regular airlines, and planning to operate flights on medium and long-haul routes from Singapore, initially to Australia and China, using Boeing 777 aircraft obtained from its parent company, Singapore Airlines.

On 4 June 2012, Scoot began its first flight to Sydney Airport.

As announced on 1 November 2011, Scoot's fleet is expected to consist of four Boeing 777-200 with plans in place to have 14 aircraft by 2016.

In March 2012 the airline announced that the aircraft would be operated in a 2-class configuration, Economy (including extra legroom seating, branded S-t-r-e-t-c-h seats) and ScootBiz.

The new seating layout will feature 32 ScootBiz seats in a 2-4-2 configuration, with a seat pitch of 38", while the economy cabin will have a 3-4-3 configuration with 31" seat pitch.

With an initial fleet of four Boeing 777 aircraft, Scoot’s first-year routes will link Australia, Singapore, Thailand and China, with other destinations to be announced.

Scoot will provide medium and long haul no-frills flights from 4 June 2012.

For Bangalore-based Sulaiman Jamal a car isn’t just steel, paint, plastic, leather and rubber - it has personality and soul - and he cannot bear to see any of them corrode and die. He has made it his life’s quest to acquire vintage cars and have them restored to their original pomp and glory. It began in 1979 when he bought his first car, an Austin 14 (1939), wheeled it into a garage, and had it painstakingly restored. “Soon after I bought my first vintage car I was bitten by the bug, the love affair began and the search still continues,” he says. “Cars are either a passion or an investment. In my case I buy them because I love to restore them. The day you turn it into a business you stop enjoying it.” He houses his cars and bikes in a huge house in Whitefield, Bangalore. Unlike a lot of vintage car collectors, his purpose for acquiring the cars is to see them restored. Sulaiman has to physically inspect a car and form a ‘bond’ with it before he buys it and has changed his mind about cars in the past after he had seen them. “The car talks to you, sometimes I have given an advance on a car and then taken the money back because the car repelled me (Chevy Impala-1961). The owner obliged, so instead of the car I bought 200 clocks from the person,” claims Sulaiman. Being a sentimental man, Sulaiman believes in keeping in touch with the previous owners and allows their children and grandchildren to see the cars and even drive them. He’s not just crazy about cars. His love of restoration led him buy an old British Victorian bungalow close to his house. Once ready, the bungalow will house a lot of the antique furniture that he has sourced. He also acquires and restores bikes, furniture, musical instruments and clocks. Quite the maverick, he can play seven musical instruments, and also loves listening and talking about music. In his day job he spends time making bevel gears at his factory Bevel Gears India.

Story: Sulaiman moved from Coimbatore to Bangalore and started his career as a junior engineer. He bought his first car an Austin 14 (1939) for Rs 4000 in 1979. After buying the car he drove the car to 2 Stroke Motors. “They were known for their painting and body shop work. It was restored in no time and I was bitten by the bug.”

The car belonged to a certain Almeida from Mumbai, who was the father of a good friend of Sulaiman’s. During a visit to Banglaore Almeida discovered Sulaiman’s interest in classic cars and mentioned that he had a car in Bombay. On inspection Sulaiman found that the car was in great shape but was never used for years and had to be overhauled, and the rust and chrome to be redone. “Though this car is not a 'classic’ it is unique because it is a single owner with original paint and upholstery and he also had a lot of spares with original owners' manual. The car was his prized possession in Kenya where he worked as a senior Bank official. Great car for any one starting a collection,” remarks Sulaiman.

Story: The Rover P3 is again a single-owner car with all the original bells and whistles which is difficult to get, in ordinary circumstances. The owner was a Doctor in Bahrain and brought the car back with him many years ago. Sulaiman spotted the car sometime in the 90's on Brigade road, driven by a suited distinguished looking gentleman. He followed the car and introduced myself to the owner. He turned out to be Dr Thomas of the Bangalore Polyclinic in Frazer town. “Dr Thomas told me the car was not for sale but he would definitely let me know when he planned to sell it. True to his word years later he sent me a message and I acquired the car,” recalls Sulaiman.

Year: Early 1950s
Owner: Originally owned by the British High Commissioner of Madras, it was bought by an eminent industrialist family from Coimbatore.

Story: The six-cylinder Wolseley was used daily by its owner, a Coimbatore industrialist. The Wolseley 6/110, because of its powerful engine, was also used by the British police. With leather upholstery, premium trims and wooden interior, this car also scores on the looks front.

Year: 1959

Owner: Businessman from Tamil Nadu

Story: “He had driven the car for more than a decade and was reluctant to sell it initially. I promised to have his son, who is around 14 now, use it when he gets married.” When Sulaiman was bringing the car back from Coimbatore he decided to put it in a truck, but the owner insisted that all it needed was petrol and it would literally fly, and convinced him to drive it by road.

Owner: L Devraj from Coimbatore, who bought it from Meenakshi Mills.

Story: The Daimler DB18 Saloon was produced from 1947 through 1953 with a total of 608 being manufactured. Devraj, Sulaiman’s friend from Coimbatore, had many cars. Knowing his friend’s love for vintage cars he decided to give this away.

Owner: Original owner was the Maharajah of Mysore. Subsequently acquired by Sulaiman’s brother-in-law

Story: Sulaiman’s jewel in the crown, the Daimler Maharajah is an impressive looking car and is worthy of a king. There were very few were these made and were manufactured exclusively for Maharajahs. There is a glass divider between driver and the passengers. “The Daimler Maharajah is my most valued car, although it is difficult to drive in traffic, it’s worth the effort.”

Owner: SG Mani

Story: Sulaiman’s Mercedes collection was started when SG Mani, a buddy of his from college, called to tell him that he was willing to dispose his old, priced Mercedes 219 as it was in danger of getting corroded. Mani had bought it from an old Parsi gentleman. “This is the car that I enjoy driving most as I can drive it around everyday.”

Story: The acquisition of the second Mercedes happened quite serendipitously, when he met a senior industrialist at a car rally where they spoke about Sulaiman’s love for cars. He said that there was an old Merc that used to be driven by a German and might be available in his factory’s garage. “With my heart pounding I opened the garage. The car was there and all that it needed was a face-lift.” The car was restored in a record 90 days flat.

Sulaiman’s labor of love for close to three decades will come to nought if his legacy is not continued. He passes on the baton to Mushtaq Jamal, his son. “The year that I acquired my first car was also the year that Mushtaq was born,” remarks Sulaiman. Mushtaq is a chip off the old block -- tall and handsome, he shares his father’s love for cars and bikes. “I learned how to drive on the Morris Minor and to ride on the Triumph. I want to continue what Dad has started,” he muses. Must be music to Sulaiman’s ears!

Tata Motors presented at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show the Tata Megapixel, a new four-seater city-smart global range extended electric vehicle (REEV) concept for the performance-seeking and environment-conscious motorist anywhere in the world.

Combining a lithium ion phosphate battery and an on-board petrol engine generator for recharging on the move, the Tata Megapixel offers a range of up to 900 km (with a single tank of fuel), path-breaking CO2 emission of just 22 gm / km and fuel economy of 100 km / litre (under battery only power).

The class-leading ‘Zero Turn’ drive system of the Tata Pixel (shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show) has been taken to an even higher level of manoeuvrability in the Tata Megapixel.

The Maruti Suzuki Alto has gained back its number 1 position in May 2012 by selling 20724 units. The increase in sales is marginal and the Swift is right on the Alto's heels.

Maruti Suzuki sold 20050 units of the Swift last month, which is a marginal increase from April. However the Swift's sales can be much more if the company can produce more units.

The Maruti Suzuki DZire has maintained its third position for quite some time now. It sold 17707 units, which is a 2200 units improvement from April.

A surprise at number 4. Mahindra's Bolero has gained two positions to come in the top 5. It sold 9584 units last month.

The Tata Nano has pulled into the top 5 even though sales haven't increased by much. The world's cheapest car sold 8507 units last month.

Jumping 3 positions is the Hyundai i20, which with its Fluidic front managed to sell 7675 units, taking the number 6 position.

The old and trusty Maruti Omni sold 7452 units in May 2012, which puts it 3 positions higher on the top 10 chart.

This gargantuan of a truck is hard to describe, but put it this way, imagine standing on the terrace of your duplex house and driving the entire building down the road. As 'simple' as that!

The biggest truck in the world is neither a Volvo nor a Ford, not even a Mack truck with a double trailer. The real monsters are mining trucks that stand more than 21 feet tall and 48 ft long.

Audi e-bike: A bicycle that runs at 80 kmph

The prototype cycle combining an electric drive and muscle power along with tech used on Audi cars was showcased at the Worthersee Tour in Austria.

Audi unveiled an extremely emotion-inspiring sports machine, the Audi e-bike Wörthersee at Wörthersee in Carinthia, Austria. The prototype cycle combines an electric drive and muscle power. Head of Design Wolfgang Egger comments: “As a high-performance e-bike for sports and trick cycling, it features the Audi core competences of design, ultra, e-tron and connect.” The Audi e-bike Wörthersee puts in its first major appearance at this year’s Wörthersee Tour, the 31st meet for Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda fans; trial biker Julien Dupont and downhill specialist Petra Bernhard will demonstrate their stunts and streetbike skills.

The uncompromising dynamism of the bike prototype is fully visible at first sight. “When developing the Audi e-bike Wörthersee we drew on motor racing design principles for inspiration,” explains Hendrik Schaefers, one of the designers at Concept Design Studio Munich. “The e-bike appears incredibly precise, highly emotional and strictly functional. Indeed, the design effort focused on its function as a sports machine. All design elements are thus firmly aligned to the technical features.”

The airy frame boasts a low center of gravity and a compact overall volume. In this way, the e- bike is superbly agile at the sporty handling limits. The lithium-ion battery is incorporated into the frame and needs 2.5 hours to freuteully charge. On long trial tours, only a few simple steps are required to remove the battery and replace it with a charged one.

The frame and the swinging arm that holds the back wheel are made of carbon fiber- reinforced polymer (CFRP). The same material is used for the 26” wheels, which feature an innovative “Audi ultra blade” design with broad flat spokes for an optimized transmission of pedal power. “We were able to demonstrate with the choice of materials just how closely design goes hand in hand with expertise in ultra lightweight construction,” Hendrik Schaefers comments.

Homogeneous LED light strips round out the frame and create the immediately recognizable Audi light signature. For extreme tricks and stunts the seat can be lowered to run flush with the frame itself. At the press of a button, the seat then rises up and the biker can adopt a comfortable position.

Cycling modes and countless other functions can be set using the touchscreen on-bike computer. The cyclist's smartphone hooks up by WLAN to the computer – when you start cycling, for example, the immobilizer is deactivated. Video images of the trial drive or of a trick, as recorded via the in-helmet camera, are uploaded to the Internet in real time via your smartphone.

Each trick performed successfully is then awarded success points, and as the number of points awarded grows, the cyclist receives awards and the challenge level rises, too. The rankings table in the Internet means you can measure yourself against other bikers and your friends. And where they happen to be comes to you via Facebook status reports that pop up on the Audi e-bike Wörthersee display.

The cyclist can choose between a total of five cycling modes – pure muscle power, the electric motor alone, or pedaling supported by the electric motor. In the “Pure” mode, the drive power is purely the product of the cyclist’s legs, while in “Pedelec” mode you are supported by the electric motor that then makes speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) possible and gives you a range of 50-70 kilometers (31-44 miles).

If you select “eGrip”, the Audi e-bike Wörthersee runs solely on the electric motor and can reach a top speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). The cyclist then controls forward momentum using a gripshift and can configure the power as desired using the computer.

When performing wheelies, an electronic control system supports the rider when performing tricks and back-wheel biking. Different modes can be set using a smartphone or directly on the e-bike – either “Power Wheelie” mode, with adjustable wheelie angle for less skilled bikers or “Balanced Wheelie” mode for sporting challenges.

In "Balanced Wheelie" mode, the electronic control system maintains the rider’s balance, by compensating the biker’s movements forwards or backwards via the electric motor.

This means the rider can influence the bike’s speed by shifting weight: if you lean forwards the bike picks up speed, and if you lean back it slows. You select “Training” mode if you want to keep your performance constant for training purposes.

The electric motor is located at the lowest point on the frame and drives the bottom bracket shaft directly. The maximum torque delivered to the rear wheel is 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft).

The electric motor generates a maximum output of 2.3 kW, a new world best for e-bikes. The complete bike excluding electrical components weighs in at 11 kg (24.25 lb), equivalent to a power-to-weight ratio of 9 kg (19.84 lb) per kilowatt, or 7 kg (15.43 lb) per horsepower – another record-breaking value.
