This was ideal for Lamborghini, who would often roll up his shirtsleeves and go to work on the cars personally when he saw something that wasn’t done just the way he wanted.

The first model was naturally put out quickly, given that Lamborghini had only a few months between the time he decided to build the factory and the date set for its official presentation. The event that was chosen for this was the era’s traditional rendezvous, the Turin Auto Show scheduled for the beginning of November 1963. Since Lamborghini had a very clear idea of what he wanted, he didn’t waste any time looking for the right people. In addition to the Volt, other fuel-efficient top scorers included a number of Toyota models – Camry, Hybrid, Prius and Prius C – and the Nissan Leaf.

The sport car category was ruled by the Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911, the V8 Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang, while tops in the luxury category were the Audi A7, Lexus GS and Audi A6.

And on the other end of the spectrum, the redesigned subcompact Nissan Versa Sedan reportedly came in with the lowest score in the survey, with fewer than half of its owners saying they would definitely buy it again. Dodge, Jeep and Nissan are just a few of the manufacturers that have made it on a list of new cars to stay away from, according to a recent article on Forbes.com.

Cars such as the Dodge Journey, Jeep Wrangler, and Nissan Versa Hatchback are included on a list of 10 cars that were picked due to such things as below-par handling and performance, low marks for quality and reliability, and low crash testing ratings. Forbes used sources such as Consumer Reports, J.D. Power and Associates, the Highway Loss Data Institute, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to compile the results.

Bryan Staring will perform at the MotoGP season 2013. 25 year old racers from Australia it will sit on top of the motor saddle Go & Fun Honda Gresini CRT.

2012 Dodge Charger

We added more than 3000 miles to our Charger's odometer in July, recording the busiest month for the Dodge since it arrived in January. A bulk of those miles can be credited to photographer A.J. Mueller who enlisted our Charger to scout a photo shoot in Nashville, Tennessee. During the long trek down I-75, Mueller noted that the Charger is blessed with "amazing, big, beefy seats that let you ride in serious comfort." He also came away impressed by the Dodge's frugality over 1400 miles. "The gas mileage was very impressive and the tank never seemed to get down to E." In fact, the Charger's fuel log shows multiple fill-ups of just about half a tank; Mueller and his crew couldn't outlast the massive 19.1-gallon tank. Averaging 26 mpg -- well above the Charger's 23-mpg EPA city/highway combined rating -- they could have covered as much as 500 miles on a single tank.

The other 1600 miles were accumulated in and around Ann Arbor, where our editors couldn't help themselves from commenting on that contentious eight-speed automatic transmission. Senior web editor Phil Floraday kicked it off, writing, "I really wish the gear ratios and shift timing were better optimized for the power delivery from the Pentastar engine." Floraday is talking about our Charger's 3.6-liter V-6. It produces a formidable 292 hp, but it also feels weaker than that number suggests up until 3500 rpm, when it really wakes up. At part-throttle acceleration, the engine can't take advantage of the high-end power. "The Charger seems to upshift just as the engine starts to produce power, then you're back into the sluggish lower end in an absurd effort to save fuel," Floraday complained. "It's perfectly fine to have the transmission upshift early to save fuel, but it's not acceptable for that to happen if the engine only makes power in the upper end of the rev range. I'd be a lot happier with this car if the engine delivered more torque down low."

Assistant editor David Zenlea has joined Floraday in using the Charger's transmission sport mode as his default choice. "More and more I'm noticing that, in new cars, drive is really eco, forcing you to go down to sport if you want downshifts when you expect them," he wrote. Pulling the gear selector into sport mode also better aligns the powertrain to the Charger's cornering demeanor. The Dodge is in a class of one compared to the indifferent-handling competitors in the full-size sedan segment. "I still appreciate how well the Charger steers and handles," Zenlea wrote. "I got into the Charger after a week in a 2010 Mustang GT and didn't feel like I was suffering from handling withdrawal. It's refreshing to drive a big, rear-wheel-drive sedan that doesn't snap at you, CTS-V-style, should you get on the throttle a little early in corners."

On the service front, we paid another unexpected visit to our dealer in July to address an airbag warning light that popped up in the instrument cluster. If this sounds familiar, it's because we dealt with this same issue just last month. In June, the dealer discovered a loose connector in a wiring harness under the driver's seat, cleaned some corrosion off the pins, and sent us on our way. On this latest visit, the technician diagnosed an intermittent open circuit in the same harness that had just been cleaned. This time around, the connector was replaced under warranty. We're hoping this fix lasts longer.

Deep Dive: Long Live the Audi A2 e-tron

Built between 1999 and 2005, the Audi A2 was a car ahead of its time. No, it never made any money, and with only 176,377 units produced, it remained a niche model. Why did it flop? Because customers refused to pay a premium for packaging excellence, top aerodynamics (it had a Cd of just 0.25), and amazing efficiency (roughly 94.7 mpg on the European cycle). But despite the commercial crash landing, the narrow and tall alloy-bodied one-box runabout worked wonders for the then-lackluster Audi brand image, helping to establish the Vorsprung durch Technik claim.

Audi A2 E Tron

It was clear from the beginning that the A2 deserved a successor, but exactly what kind of vehicle this MkII version should be remained a mystery for almost seven years. Although Audi showed a (then already 16-month-old) A2 concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Show, the response was not exactly encouraging. As a result, that program was scrapped and a new concept was elected to take on the BMW i3. Its name: Audi e-tron. Its mission: to offer a choice of the uniquely efficient electric and hybrid drivetrains.

A Premium Product

What bugged the Audi A2 from day one was the high price point in combination with the relatively small footprint. However, buyers are no longer averse to premium-priced compacts. Unlike the A2 concept that measured 149.6 inches in length, the latest iteration exceeds the critical 157.5-inch (4000-millimeter) mark by more than a hair's breadth. It is also significantly wider and roomier, it offers a tailor-made specification boasting a miniature air conditioning compressor, lightweight seats, and a low-loss power steering system; yet it retains the classic A2 silhouette. Unlike BMW i, which is about to evolve into a proper model range featuring the already-confirmed i3 and i8 as well as the tentative i5 microvan (2015) and the i2 city car (2016), Audi intends to offer only a single bodystyle of its five-door high-tech eco car. While the base BMW i3 is expected to cost around $46,000, the Audi e-tron will almost certainly be priced in the $51,000 to $55,000 bracket.

To justify this ambitious positioning, it needs to be premium in appearance, content, and engineering. Although the ground-breaking architecture is believed to be based on an aluminum-intensive material mix, the planet-friendly battery-laden ZEV/ULEV newcomer will be quite a bit heavier than the original A2, which weighed between 1973 and 2359 pounds. The A2 concept was loosely based on MQB, the modular transverse engine matrix also used by the new A3 and upcoming seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf. The e-tron takes MQB to a new level known as Mlittraktion-Plattform (MTP). No, multi-traction does not give a choice of front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive. Instead MTP is a highly flexible cradle that can accommodate a battery electric drive (BEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a range extender (REX). What MTP does not cater to is a conventional gas or diesel engine. Instead, it combines axle, brake, and steering elements from the MQB kit with bespoke zero-emission or low-emission drivetrain modules. The first e-tron to come to market in late 2014 will likely be the BEV powered by a 136-hp motor connected to a 30-kWh battery stack. Next in line is the PHEV, a joint effort between a 1.4-liter 150-hp gas engine, a 109-hp electric motor, and a 10-kWh energy pack. Still under discussion, but not yet confirmed, is the REX that won't use the neat Wankel range extender first seen in the A1 e-tron. For cost and packaging reasons, research and development is toying with a conventional single- or two-cylinder powerplant purchased from a still-nameless supplier.

Together with the German carbon fiber specialist Voith, Audi is working on an advanced ultra-plus vehicle structure that is allegedly easier, quicker, and cheaper to build than the life-drive sandwich conceived by BMW and SGL Carbon. In addition to carbon fiber and aluminum, the ultra-plus concept conceived especially for the e-tron incorporates high-strength steel, magnesium, and various composites. To save weight and ensure optimum rigidity, we can expect innovative bonding techniques such as folding, binding, splicing, and stamp hinging.

Although the e-tron will be more expensive than an A4, it should be significantly more economical to run than the diminutive A1, and it is bound to match or exceed the A3 in terms of performance and driving pleasure. if the green flagship car gets the nod later this year, the e-tron components will soon filter through Audi's A, Q, and R model range, be it in the shape of tweaked PHEV applications or by systematically reducing the weight via a flexible material mix.
