The world expected Lamborghini to unveil its Murciélago replacement at this year’s Paris auto show—production of the wildest bull has already ended—but the supercar maker chose instead to tease us with this concept, saving its new flagship for next March’s Geneva auto show. Ah, you must now be thinking, so this smaller car previews a Gallardo replacement! Nope, it’s not that either.

What, then, is the Sesto Elemento? Let's have a look at the exterior first. Despite the mid-engine layout, this concept seems compact, with a very short rear overhang. Wedgy shapes are typical for Lamborghini, but this car is even more extreme than the super-angular Reventón, the ultra-low-volume Murciélago spinoff from a few years ago. A plethora of spoilers, air vents, and triangular elements protrude from or perforate its body. There is a racing-type quick-refueling system. The rear end is open, to give spectators a clear view of the transmission and the exhaust system, the latter of which, remarkably, exits through the engine cover above the taillights.

The front end and roof are marked by sharp, seemingly folded creases, and the rear part of the roof is graced by two intake ducts and two parallel lines of five holes arranged above the cylinder banks. Below the ten openings sits, obviously, a V-10. The hexagonal shape of these elements is a nod to an obsession of former Bertone designer Marcello Gandini, who penned the Miura and Countach.

Seems Familiar and Futuristic

Despite an overt familiarity to its shape, the Sesto Elemento is nevertheless detached from the brand's current styling language. The wild details turn it into something you’d expect only in a video game, or in some crazy tuner's showroom, but not quite from Lamborghini, not after the brand has been working hard to overcome the styling clichés of its past. In fact, we hear there was a considerable amount of discussion within Lamborghini and at parent Audi about showing such an extreme concept car. In the end, the view prevailed that it wouldn't hurt to deviate a bit from the production models' somewhat aloof and architectonic proportions and design—traits that will apply to that Murciélago replacement, by the way.

One of the most striking features of the Sesto Elemento is that its entire body is constructed from visible, matte-finish carbon fiber (the so-called "sixth element” indicated by translating the concept’s name from Italian), as expensive a material as it is light. In fact, the curb weight of the entire car is claimed to be a mere 2200 pounds. That's 1100 fewer than our estimated curb weight for the supposedly “superlight” Gallardo Superleggera.

Wicked Quick

Combine the low weight with the V-10’s 570 hp at 8000 rpm—torque stands at 398 lb-ft at 6500 rpm—and performance should be explosive; Lamborghini says the car is capable of reaching 62 mph in 2.5 seconds. Top speed—only mentioned, says Lambo, "in the interests of completeness,” as top speed has been downgraded to the fourth-highest priority for its products—is said to be “well over 185 mph.” We suspect this modesty belies a terminal velocity north of 200 mph.

The use of carbon fiber extends beyond exterior panels: The passenger-holding monocoque, front subframe, crumple zones, and wheels are made of the material as well. The rear subframe, by contrast, is made of aluminum. Most anything else has simply been omitted. There is no dashtop—the underlying structure itself is laid bare—and the seat cushions are glued to the monocoque. One element we wish had been included is a clutch pedal. The Sesto Elemento is equipped with the e-gear six-speed automated manual transmission; power runs through it to Lambo’s all-wheel-drive system.

Foreshadows Future Lambos

If the sinister design won’t redefine Lamborghini styling, the Sesto Elemento is nevertheless significant as a rolling testament to the brand’s commitment to carbon fiber; all future Lambos will make extensive use of the stuff. AWD systems and heavy, ten- and twelve-cylinder engines take their toll on curb weights, and eliminating hundreds of pounds through the use of carbon fiber will give Lamborghini a potent weapon in the fight to create the most extreme supercars.

It's good politically for the brand within the VW Group, too. With its sales numbers taking a dive, Lamborghini needs another leg to stand on, and carbon-fiber expertise will for the first time make the raging bull a technology leader among VW’s brands. Lamborghini is working with the University of Washington in Seattle to develop its carbon-fiber tech, and aircraft maker Boeing is a partner in the university's Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory, too.

Yes, we were hoping to see the next Murciélago, but we’ll admit the Sesto Elemento is one hell of a substitute, and it further raises our expectations for the next production Lambo. This thing is so over the top, it’s almost too much—just as any proper Lamborghini should be.

2010 Paris Auto Show: The Future of the Supercar - Feature

If there were any doubt that supercars would survive in the face of tightening efficiency regulations and increasingly ecoconscious buyers—yes, at least some of the superrich give a damn—these cars should put it to rest. The five poster-worthy machines detailed here go above and beyond the usual supercar tropes of ludicrous speed and lust-worthy sheetmetal, featuring intensely high-tech powertrains, state-of-the-art materials and construction, or both. Not only are these technological advancements going to keep the supercar species alive, but many of the innovations will eventually trickle down to the cars we regular folks buy, too.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept

Rumors pegged Lambo’s Paris show car as its replacement for the lascivious Murciélago, but the radical Sesto Elemento—Italian for “sixth element,” i.e., carbon—showed up instead. Even more dramatic than the concept’s styling, though, is how far Lamborghini was able to push its use of carbon fiber. Using techniques learned through a University of Washington–based partnership, the superlight stuff forms not only every exterior panel but also major structural components like the front subframe, the passenger monocoque, and even the crumple zones. Nearly everything that wasn’t needed was deleted. There is no dash pad, and the seats are simply padding glued to seat shapes molded into the passenger cell. The weight savings are breathtaking. The concept is claimed to weigh 2200 pounds—some 1000 pounds lighter than the Gallardo—and its lessons will be applied not only to future Lambos but also throughout Lamborghini’s parent company, the Volkswagen Group.

Audi E-Tron Spyder Concept

This Spyder is a shining example of Audi’s commitment to building great-looking high-performance, alternatively powered cars. This is the fourth e-tron concept car Audi has shown, each with a different powertrain solution. This one has a diesel engine powering the rear wheels and electric motors spinning the fronts. It’s a plug-in hybrid, too, meaning you can charge the front-mounted battery pack from a wall socket. The first all-electric e-tron has already been confirmed for limited production, and the styling of the Spyder should make it to the streets wrapped around the R8’s upcoming baby brother, the R4, within a couple of years. This powertrain, or something similar, shouldn’t be too far behind.

Jaguar C-X75 Concept

We’ll do the traditional journalism thing here and put the most salient fact upfront: Jaguar isn’t putting this turbine-toting electric supercar into production. What the C-X75 does show, however (besides Jaguar’s ability to give itself a kick-ass 75th-anniversary present), is that the company means business when it says it’s looking into alternative-propulsion vehicles. Jaguar has been late to market with hybrids and electrics, but partnerships with British agencies—as is the case here—are seemingly jump-starting the development of such projects. At its most basic, the C-X75’s powertrain is similar to one you’ll see on the street soon in the Chevrolet Volt, in that the wheels are turned by battery-fed electricity, the replenishment of which can be handled by an onboard generator. But in place of the Volt’s one propulsive electric motor, the Jag has four—one for each wheel. And whereas the Volt’s generator is a conventional four-cylinder internal-combustion engine, the C-X75 delivers range-extending juice via a pair of onboard turbines. It’s all very cool, and thanks to that partnership with the British Technology Strategy Board, it could be closer to reality than it looks.

2014 Lotus Esprit

Lotus’s Esprit sits atop an entire fleet of sports cars the company introduced at the Paris auto show and, like the rest of that lineup, incorporates cutting-edge technology that blends eye-popping performance with greater efficiency. The Esprit and several of its future kin will offer a Formula 1–inspired KERS hybrid setup that provides a jolt of additional power at the flick of a finger. When a button is pressed, electricity regenerated through deceleration and stored in a battery pack is fed to an electric motor, the power from which is combined with that of the conventional engine. Despite the 612 hp on tap, Lotus predicts the Esprit’s CO2 emissions will be on par with the Volvo XC60 crossover’s. Although the Esprit’s estimated $110,000 sticker is big money, it’s reasonable by supercar standards, and it could portend a future in which enthusiasts could have it all—performance, style, and efficiency—without a self-defeating price. All Lotus has to do is survive long enough to build it.

2012 Porsche 918 Spyder

Yes, Porsche’s stunning 918 Spyder concept actually debuted at the Geneva auto show last March, but it remains an exemplar of the future of hyper-performance. We’ve gushed once or twice (or thrice) about the plug-in hybrid Porsche before. Actual production was confirmed in July, and if you need a French connection, Porsche announced this week that 918 examples will be built. The concept houses a mid-mounted 500-plus-hp, 3.4-liter V-8 with Le Mans racing lineage, as well as a total of three electric motors—two on the front axle and another integrated into the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox—good for another 218 hp. The car will be able to operate on electricity alone—this mode will make it the world’s only front-wheel-drive Porsche, at least until the 25-mile range is reached—or in parallel-hybrid form, more like a Toyota Prius, where the gas engine and the electric motors work in conjunction. It’s not yet confirmed that the production car will live up to the concept’s numerical estimates—most notably, the circa-200-mph max velocity or the incredible 78-mpg fuel-consumption figure on the European test cycle—but anything even close would be extremely impressive. All 270 or so U.S.-bound 918 Spyders are guaranteed to be spoken for before the first production example is screwed together, but those of us who don’t have the $600,000 asking price need only be patient. With any luck, the futurist tech developed for the 2012 918 Spyder will join anti-lock brakes and keyless entry as standard equipment on the 2022 Porsche Boxster.

GM considers CVTs for small cars

General Motors Co., aiming to give its small cars a sales edge, may introduce continuously variable transmissions to deliver better fuel economy, executives say.

GM doesn't use CVTs now. But they could be used on models such as the Chevrolet Spark, Aveo and Cruze in the next three years, said Mike Arcamone, CEO of GM Daewoo Auto & Technology.

The company is also exploring the use of turbochargers on smaller engines.

Getting superior mileage is key to winning over U.S. drivers to the latest wave of small cars that began with the launch of the Cruze this year and continues with the arrival of the four-seat Spark in the first half of 2012.

GM will have to improve the mileage on these models by at least 10 percent by the next full-model change, said Sohn Dongyoun, vice president of engineering at GM's global small- and minicar development team at GM Daewoo. CVTs offer an easy, quick fix, he said.

General Motors offered CVTs in three vehicles, the Saturn Ion coupe and Vue SUV and the Opel Astra small car, for three years but dropped the transmission at the end of the 2005 model year.

Arcamone said U.S. customers are finally ready for small cars such as the Spark--as long as they wield eye-catching style and updated content, especially infotainment options.

"The car's got to not look like a small box," Arcamone said. "It's got to be fun, sporty, aggressive and have roominess." Despite the Spark's small size, "You don't feel claustrophobic."

The Spark, to be GM's smallest U.S. offering, will test whether the recovering automaker has found the right formula. The car will be manufactured in North America, but Arcamone declined to identify the plant. Production in Mexico is one option.

Amped Up! GM to hire 1,000 engineers and researchers for electric cars

General Motors will hire 1,000 engineers and researchers in Michigan for research and development of electric vehicles, CEO Dan Akerson said on Tuesday morning in Detroit.

The new hires will work on batteries, electric motors and power-control technology. Akerson made the announcement at the factory that builds the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

“We are well on our way to the electrification of the automobile,” Akerson said.

The GM chief executive drove onto the stage in the Job One Volt, which is headed to the company's heritage collection. The first retail Volt will be auctioned to benefit the Detroit Public Schools Foundation. The opening bid is $50,000, a bit above the $41,000 sticker the car will have. With incentives, it can cost about $33,500.

Bidding starts on Tuesday, and the winner will be revealed on Dec. 16.

The car has a fuel-economy rating of the equivalent of 93 mpg, with 37 mpg on gasoline and 35 miles on electricity, the EPA said.

In a bit of a surprise, former GM vice chairman Bob Lutz made a guest appearance to show off the vehicle he's championed since its debut in concept form at the 2007 Detroit auto show.

“GM's biggest challenge is reputation, and the Volt will go a long way toward changing the perceptions of people in California and on the East Coast,” said Lutz, who's now an adviser with British sports-car company Lotus.
