The leather upholstery is plush and omnipresent, and large aluminum trim adorns the center console, steering wheel and other controls. gauge cluster has a little “power gauge” gadget that shows so-called power output in real time. The Veyron high waistline like a bathtub, annoyingly thick pillars and the low seating position does not improve his credentials as a driver of a car, but there is plenty of room in there, even for more people. From the original concept car debuted in 1989, the Viper has embodied the American spirit of reckless excess. Captured the imagination of car enthusiasts and manages to draw attention today. The Viper is as it always has been, a field of wild animals by road is also difficult to drive because it is rewarding. This engine starts Viper mass from zero to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds with the light on the quarter mile in 11.6 in a single second to 125.7 mph. Despite its low weight, we found CAB to be a little faster. Top speed is a claimed 200 mph. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, which is the only transmission available. Fuel economy – but obviously after the fact that the exotic sports cars – saving an estimated EPA of 13 mpg city / 22 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined.

Access to the driver’s seat can be challenging for some. Because the exhaust side of the marks, the side rails can become hot enough to burn the calves, the best drivers and find that the rather small opening of the door makes entry and exit. Those whose bottom is wider than the average can also find the seats a little uncomfortable tight.

The overall design of the interior of the Viper is pretty sad, but it may brighten a bit with the optional two-tone colors and dashboard inserts. Gauges in black and white face are easy to read and well positioned. The speedometer is mounted in the center of the large instrument module, next to the speedometer 220-mph-max. The center console seat additional gauges, audio system with CD player, air conditioning and a juicy red button Start to start the V10. The car uses a 1.8-liter petrol engine and electric motor to provide nearly 62 mpg (US), consuming 3.8 liters of petrol per 100 km.

Featured in the car is a four-cylinder 1.8-liter VVT-i petrol engine producing 98 PS (72 kW) and up to 142 Nm (105 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is coupled with a 60 kW electric motor kicking out up to 207 Nm (153 lb-ft) torque. Surprisingly, maximum combined output is kept at 136 PS (100 kW), which seems low considering the strength of the motor.

Still, the hybrid's direct emissions is reduced to about 89 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The car is kept more efficient by a 0.283 drag coefficient, down from 0.290 on the other Auris models. This is due to aerodynamic changes seen only on the HSD, including longer bumpers, and a better designed grille that improves air flow over the top and reduces resistance underneath. Different lamps can also be seen.

The setup lets the car run on all-electric for up to two kilometers, and at speeds up to 50 km/h (31 mph). Regenerative braking is also a part of the package. The car features four driving modes, like EV, Eco, and Power. The X6 M is weirder still, adding incomprehensible performance capability to this plenty weird thing (to say nothing of pissing off so-called M purists).

But the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is nothing short of utterly fantastic. And we mean "fantastic" in all of its shades of meaning offered by the Encarta dictionary in the right column of our screen as we write this.

Let's see: The X6 ActiveHybrid is "extraordinarily good," at least compared to other hybrid SUV/coupe things. It is "apparently impossible but real," because, honestly who could have thought of such an impossibly complex thing? It exists "only in the imagination," or it will for the vast majority of humans, as the $89,775 base price will keep it off virtually all streets. That it's "extremely strange in appearance" needs no further clarification, although we note the additional bulge in hood of the X6 hybrid isn't helping make the vehicle look less strange.

And finally, the X6 hybrid is "unusual and unlikely to be successful."

Stop Making Sense
Because there is no conventional frame of reference in the automotive realm that will make the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 make sense, we will from this point forward, avoid trying to make some sense of this vehicle.

After all, what are we to make of a $90K sport-ute with little utility, almost as much sport as the standard and much cheaper X6, but without the big fuel-economy gains that you'd hope would come with 420 pounds of increased complexity?

The ActiveHybrid X6 (which we will refer to from this moment forward as simply the X6 hybrid) is the result of BMW's participation in a consortium of automakers including General Motors and (then) DaimlerChrysler that's since been disbanded. The consortium has to show for its work and money several technically impressive but practically vexing trucks such as the unpopular Chevy Tahoe hybrid and GMC Yukon hybrid, the Silverado and Sierra pickup truck versions, the guilt-assuaging Cadillac Escalade hybrid and, soon, a Dodge Ram hybrid, the BMW X6 hybrid and the Mercedes-Benz ML450 hybrid.

BMW is understandably not eager to talk about the consortium's other offspring, preferring instead to play up the fact that it has built the BMW of full hybrids. In other words, the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid is meant to maintain as its guiding principle the traditional BMW ideal of performance driving.

The Ultimate Driving Hybrid?
So all right, we'll take that bait. BMW claims that the X6 hybrid does zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. That is indeed high-performance. And that it's done by a vehicle weighing in at a flab-tastic 5,688 pounds is really very, very impressive. Such performance is but a tenth of a second slower than the standard V8-powered X6 and about a second quicker than the six-cylinder X6. And in what surely must be a first, BMW says the X6 hybrid's hypercomplex electronics incorporate a launch control function (although we were unable to make it work on our test car despite repeated tries and guidance from the X6 hybrid's head powertrain engineer).

The 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid uses the same twin-turbo, direct-injection 4.4-liter V8 engine as the conventional X6 V8. For accelerative force the hybrid also brings two electric motors incorporated into the transmission to overcome the hybrid's additional 420 pounds of heft (thanks, NiMH batteries and magic transmission!). Possibly, as children the BMW engineers liked to try to run up the down escalators, just like us.

How It All Works
Look, there's no disputing that the X6 hybrid is a quick thing. BMW says that the powertrain system can make a maximum 480 horsepower. That is enough to move just about anything, but if you floor the throttle from a standstill or from a steady cruise, be prepared to wait awhile for the silicon brains to grab a cup of coffee and figure out what the hell to do about this recent request. We trust that, like many of the aspects of the X6 hybrid (and, for that matter, the related two-mode hybrids), this is possibly the state of the science — that such complex matters might not be able to be sussed out any more quickly. But the end result in the real world of non-engineers is that the X6 hybrid is slow to react to its throttle.

Of course, the presence of four fixed mechanical gears; two electric motors trading duties as power delivery devices or generators for the batteries depending on speed and load; three "virtual" gears that act something like electric continuously variable transmissions but using fixed ratios (for gears 2, 4 and 6); and a handful of magic beans, means that it might take us several lifetimes to figure things out, only to have load, speed or throttle position change when we'd just begun our calculations. Except that it wouldn't, because we'd sooner push the nearly 3-ton X6 hybrid to our destination than to try. Oh, and that's just the transmission.

A more impressive aspect of powertrain performance (though decidedly less typically BMW) is its ability to run on electric power alone up to 37 mph. This is faster than the related GM two-mode utes are capable of doing. And it's a claim with some merit. Furthermore, the gasoline engine fires up and shuts down in a most agreeably smooth fashion. Like the GM offerings, the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid is all-electric in reverse so we think maybe BMW should just mount the seats the other way around and just forget about the gas engine.

Does Not Compute
So what about those characteristic BMW brakes and steering — two elements arguably more responsible for BMW's ultimate driving machine that powertrain performance?

Well, you won't be surprised to learn that the braking system for the hybrid is complicated by electronics. BMW calls this Sensotronic Brake Actuation, which de-couples the brake pedal from the rest of the mechanical/hydraulic braking system. This is because light braking is accomplished by the regenerative braking system, wherein the electric motors act as generators to recharge the batteries. Beyond a 0.3g threshold of braking force, the conventional hydraulic/mechanical system takes hold. Because there is no mechanical connection between the system and the pedal, BMW is forced to fake it, using an "integrated pedal force simulator." This doesn't so much simulate actual braking feedback as it does simulate stepping on a rubber playground ball. There's an initial light resistance followed immediately by an apparent collapse of all structure, followed by high pressure and unexpectedly high braking force. It's not like a BMW in any conventional way that we know about.

Electrons are responsible for the steering assist in the 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid as well, and, like many such systems, the steering feel is a little light for the old touch receptors. We'd be able to tell better if we didn't drive the X6 hybrid on the highway and surface streets in and around Miami Beach, where there is no geographical feature that a straight road or bridge can't be built directly through.

Just Like Crockett and Tubbs
Miami Beach also proves to be perhaps not the finest place to test handling prowess, unless you're into 90-degree corners and using tourists as apex markers.

The X6 hybrid's reason for being is its purported status as the most dynamic and characteristically BMW of hybrids. Unfortunately BMW's marketing position does not entirely jibe with the fact that the excellent torque-vectoring system from the standard X6 could not be fitted to the X6 hybrid because the battery pack took up the space under the cargo floor. An extra quarter-ton of heft doesn't help, either.

But we'll have to reserve judgment on the hybrid's handling until we get it on roads that curve or undulate or, well, do anything. It gets new, stiffer springs and dampers along with stiffer antiroll bars to cope with the added weight and replicate the tuning of the conventional X6. Also, the hybrid gets its own sassy 19-inch wheels that can only be described as "swoopy."

Those wheels, a few discreet badges and a big old lump in the hood (to accommodate electronics that sit atop the engine) are the only real identifiers of this X6's alternative powertrain.

Also, if you stalk the owner of an X6 hybrid, you'll notice he'll make slightly fewer trips to the gas station than a standard X6 (either V8 or six-cylinder). The hybrid is rated by the EPA at 17 mpg city and 19 highway. Compared to the atrocious mileage of the standard V8 model (13 mpg city/18 mpg highway) and the pretty-darn-bad mileage of the six-cylinder (15 mpg city/21 mpg highway), the X6 hybrid represents a big gain. Still, a rating of 18 mpg combined means this hybrid achieves a combined fuel economy roughly equal to a Chevy Avalanche and an annual gas cost of about $2,300.

Hyundai Tucson 2010

The stylish Hyundai Tucson start at $19,790 in GLS trim with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. For 2010, Honda gets Topping Greenopia’s drive category. Why? see more!

Greenopia backs its selection of the Japanese automaker with this statement:

The average mileage of a car in Honda’s fleet is 25.81 miles per gallon giving one of the best overall scores and the best average fleet mileage of any car company with 10 or more models. Honda also has 7 cars in its fleet that get at least 30 miles per gallon on the highway and has a variety of alternative fuel cars in the making including compressed natural gas and hydrogen fuel cell cars. This complements their already available Civic hybrid and Honda has other hybrids in the works as well.

In addition, Greenopia also selecting for each eligible company is rated on five criteria: green building design, supply chain, sustainability report, recycling, and stock. Even still, Nissan’s design leaders say, the well-aged segment remains bland.

For 2010 and beyond, there is a need for the sedan (otherwise known as the “rational or functional choice”, Nissan Design America vice president Alfonso Albaisa explained) to evolve into a vehicle with “more emotion”.

“A new customer is coming into this mature segment,” Albaisa mentioned at a private media gathering. Said customer is no longer predominantly male and in need of an athletic everyday people mover.

“She’s between 30 and 40 years old,” the designer revealed. “She’s always respected the sedan, but she might be one that has a crossover or something else. The sedan has a value, but she thinks the sedan has become boring.”

Shiro Nakamura, Nissan senior vice president and chief creative officer (the main man in charge of all Nissan/Infiniti design), agrees. “Nissan crossovers are expressive. We’re trying to bring expression to the sedan.”

Under Nakamura-san’s guidance, everything also adheres to the “Spirit of Iki”. “Iki is the traditional Japanese way of expression,” he said. “(It is) fashionable, but not too showy. It has been used for over 500 years in Tokyo — mainly for common people.”

With that entire mindset, the automaker’s design houses in Kanagawa, Japan and San Diego, California collaborated to create the Ellure concept you see here.

Although completely fresh, its modern physique remains distinctly Nissan with broad elements, strong shoulders, and well-hidden traits derived from Japanese culture. Curb weight is down to a manufacturer-claimed 2849 pounds, while the 3.4-liter flat-six engine boasts 330 horsepower, good for a power-to-weight ratio of 8.5:1. The result is a 0-60 mph sprint that is claimed to take just 4.4 seconds with the optional PDK dual-clutch gearbox and 4.7 seconds for those who still prefer the involvement of a conventional manual transmission. Those opting for the latter will see an additional mph at the top end, with a maximum speed of 175 mph – 4 mph more than the current Cayman S.

To make the Cayman R feel a little more at home on the track, a limited-slip differential is added (an item also introduced to the Boxster Spyder) and a lower, stiffer sports suspension is fitted. The front and rear spoilers from the factory Cayman Aerokit are lended to the R version, and unique 19-inch wheels sit at all four corners.

The Cayman R’s diet involved several old Porsche tricks – namely, ditching unnecessary components (those “not associated with driving performance,” as Porsche puts it) and substituting lightweight materials in the place of heavier ones. In the process, the Cayman R loses its air conditioning and stereo systems, gets a 2.6-gallon-smaller fuel tank, trades the standard steel door skins for aluminum units with simpler 911 GT3 RS interior panels, and gains carbon-fiber-backed seats.

Further cosmetic revisions include black-framed halogen headlights, contrasting side mirrors, and “Porsche” side stripes in the vein of the Boxster Spyder, GT3 RS and classic Carrera 2.7 RS. The Cayman R will hit showrooms as a 2012 model in February 2011 with a U.S. price of $66,300. As the recent firestorm surrounding the Chevrolet Volt demonstrated, your average consumers are interested in how comparable electric vehicles are to the gasoline-powered cars they already own. Because let’s be honest, buying an electric car requires a lifestyle change, with things like recharging, range, and maintenance. After 100-plus years of automobiles, we’re all very comfortable with the gasoline routine, and EVs represent a major departure from the familiar.

But they don’t have to, and that is the single most remarkable thing about the 2011 Nissan Leaf: It’s mostly unremarkable as a “Car of the Future.” And while that may seem like damning it with faint praise, it’s really the highest praise this car can be given. Nissan could’ve built a car that looked like it belonged in Star Wars, and four people would’ve bought it. Instead, it’s built a car that’s just different enough to stand out, but not enough to alienate potential buyers. As unfamiliar as the concept of a non-gasoline car may be to Joe Customer, the car itself is surprisingly familiar.

To make the point, Nissan invited us to drive the car in the towns and farms surrounding its Franklin, Tennessee, headquarters, and this time it would be a real drive. No more “take it around the block” quick tests. I strapped into a production-spec Leaf with a full battery and a guidebook that, after two driving loops, would take us on a 50-mile tour of central Tennessee. Time to find out what the Leaf is like in the real world…

At the risk of repeating myself, the Leaf proved to be quite ordinary. After 10 minutes of driving, the car felt completely normal, not unlike any other four-cylinder hatchback on the road. As amazing as that is, the lack of a learning curve was just as impressive. Sure, the touchiness of the regenerative brakes takes a bit of right-foot recalibration, and the silky smooth acceleration is something you won’t find in any gasoline-powered car short of a Rolls-Royce. But these differences fade quickly as you settle in. No special procedures or driving techniques are necessary; just drive it like you would any other car.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Racing Coupe Rumors in Dekroit

The German automaker has made a science out of making its racing division profitable. Porsche first and foremost provides factory-built racing machines to privateer customers. That’s how the 911 dominates GT racing grids around the world with such variants as the recently unveiled GT3 RSR. And if the latest reports from Germany are anything to go on, Porsche could be preparing a new racer at the rapidly approaching Detroit Auto Show.

We already know that Porsche plans to debut a new model at the rapidly approaching North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit next week, but the problem is that the German sports car maker is keeping its cards close to its chest about the type of vehicle it will unveil.

The reports further suggest that the car will be a two-seater concept coupe featuring a 600-horsepower V8. We’ll remind you that the 918 Spyder, which was recently approved for a limited production run, gets a 500HP 3.4 liter V8 electro-enhanced by way of motors that add another 160 kW (218 hp).

Nissan GT-R

It’s not often that we welcome a long-term tester so popular with staffers that it never remains parked overnight at our office. Such was the case with our Super Silver Nissan GT-R Premium, which we enjoyed, flaunted, and admired every day of its yearlong test.

The GT-R’s popularity is understandable. Its storied lineage dates back more than four decades and includes all-wheel-drive monsters that ate up the competition — hence, the Godzilla nickname. Further, our long-termer’s combination of futuristic, controversial sheetmetal and spellbinding, Nurburgring-bred performance for well under $100,000 is indeed exceptional. The GT-R’s body drips with Japanese functionality, while paying homage to the natural world and famous ancestors. Most staffers considered themselves fans of the standout shape, which attracted innumerable stares, upturned thumbs, and shouts from balconies (really, that happened). A few, though, thought it too chunky for a sports car of such magnificent stature. Regardless of opinion, wherever it rolled, it made a bold statement.

There’s no denying the twin-turbocharged, 485-horsepower coupe is the consummate athlete: muscular in build, powerful in stance and vigor, and crafted specifically for constant physical exertion. We never grew tired of the 3.5-second 0-to-60-mph sprints this beast nonchalantly laid down, nor took for granted the unimaginable quickness of its six-speed twin-clutch transmission or the vice-like power from the racing-derived 15-inch Brembo brakes. Sure, there have been a few highly publicized instances of GT-R gearbox failure, but we experienced no trouble with our model’s unit after a year of tough driving, including about 40 full-bore acceleration launches. Let us repeat that last bit: no trouble at all.

We also never grew tired of its uncanny personality. As docile as a Sentra when trotting through town, the GT-R proved tame and collected when commanded, with none of the expected supercar demerits in terms of livability and usefulness. Click off a double-downshift with the slim magnesium left paddle, throw the GT-R into a corner, and its pent-up ferocity immediately transfers to its four huge Bridgestones. No other sports car at the GT-R’s price can match its utility and performance credentials.

Volvo S60

Used to seeing concepts watered down for production, we’re happy to see Volvo sticking to their guns for the new S60. The production version of Volvo’s mid-sized exec, revealed here ahead of its Geneva debut, looks remarkably similar to the S60 Concept the Swedish brand wheeled out at the 2009 Detroit show.

Among the distinctive cues carried over is the XC60 style front end, the wavy signature line on its profile and those inverted L-shaped taillamps, but the basic shape is recognisable as an S60. Volvo says that “the sculpted hood and the short overhangs front and rear also emphasize the sports-car feel.” We’re not sure about the “sports-car feel” but this S60 does have presence. It has grown is size too; longer, wider and with a longer wheelbase, but is less than 45kg heavier than the current car.

Engine choices include a twin-scroll turbo 3.0-litre inline-six with 300 bhp and 440 Nm. Paired to a new six-speed auto (faster shifts) and Haldex AWD, this S60 T6 does 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.5 seconds. Of course following the common trend of ‘engine downsizing’, there will be a new 2.0-litre GDTi engine, which is good for 203 bhp and 300 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm.

Three suspension setups will be available: Base, Dynamic and Four-C Adaptive. The optional Dynamic uses stiffer springs and bushings, retuned dampers and thicker piston rods, while Four-C adaptive damping aims to provide the best of all worlds. On the safety front, Advanced Stability Control employs a new roll angle sensor to identify any skidding tendency at a very early stage. Also debuting is Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, which can detect pedestrians who walk into the road in front of the S60, warn the driver, before automatically apply full braking power if he/she does not respond in time. This system works at speeds up to 35 km/h. This is a development of City Safety, which works the same way, but for vehicles.

Nissan Murano Pictures

<img style="display: block;
